Checking mail - gprs or wifi

Hi,
When I set up my iphone to auto check for mails, it uses gprs instead of wifi.
Will an ipad 3G also do that, or will it use wifi if available?

THe ipad should use wifi, if it's available.
To ensure this, you can temporarily turn off the 3G in Settings.

IPhone5 - Can't Check Mail w/o Wifi...

Hi, I'm a Sprint user and recently switched from an Evo 4G to the iPhone 5. The iPhone works great on my home wifi, but when I go out, I can't access my mail. I have several accounts (yahoo, gmail, etc), and all of them say "Cannot get mail" claiming there is no internet connection.
Other notes:
-I regularly used internet on my Evo 4G (using 3G network) without any problems at all.
-I have cellular data turned ON in my phone settings. Roaming is off, but I'm nowhere near an international border.
-LTE is also marked on, but I don't think I have that in my area.
-Other features seem to work ok-- like maps, and browsing on the web (though its very slow.) Siri works sometimes, but is very slow when not on Wifi.
-My connection indicator shows 3-4 bars, and consistently says 3G active.
So why wouldn't mail work at all? It consistently fails. Any clues or advice?

GPRS or Wifi stay connected all the time

I am in a big dilemma. A few days back the GPRS or Wi-Fi connection always connects on its own and stays connected for hours! It used to connect only when required (exchange or Push mail set to synchronize every 30 minutes). It used to connect, check mails and disconnects automatically. But now, it stays on all the time. I checked all my mail connections and they are all set to check mails every 30 minutes. I made sure there are no apps running in the background also.
I called Nokia care and their suggestion is to format the phone and try. But I have so many pics, videos and data that I do not want to format.
A better solution (than hard reset/format) is always welcome.

Hi Pravin. Although it does not transfer any data, my concern was the connection always being active and battery life getting shortened. Anyways, the connection always being on according to me is a bug.
After I did the factory reset, I came to a conclusion that it was one of the emails that I had configured (5 email accounts + 1 exchange account) and one of the email accounts was hanging this.
It is much better now after a factory reset.

Checking Mail: Spinning Wheel

I have given my wife my relatively new MacBook Pro with Leopard installed. I moved her mail over to this Mac....and moved her mail folder over. It works very well....EXCEPT....right next to her mailbox, it lists the number of unread messages....and when checking mail...the spinning small wheel which denotes mail is being checked...is no longer present...
What setting do I need to change?

I have a similar problem with spinning wheels. I have three accounts and when checking for new mail the wheels spin erratically, sometimes all three or any combination, or no spin at all. Also when a new mail is received the small oval surrounding the number is often only half shaded. I've tried expanding the area bar but no change. It's just a bit annoying really as mail works fine, but I bought a Macbook at the same time, same OS 10.5.2, and that is fine. Any suggestions?

Mail ignores setting to check mail manually

Before downloading to Mail I prefer to check what is on the server so I can delete unwanted professional email and have only the ones I want come through to my computer. This has worked very well in the past when I've set Mail to check for new mail "Manually". But in recent years and OS's it fetches mail without waiting for me to click the "Get Mail" icon.
The only work around I've found is to un-click the "Enable this account" button in Mail Preferences. This is a royal pain and takes extra time going back and forth from my email to Account Preferences, and when the account is not "enabled" I cannot see all of it's content in Mail. Sometimes I have to turn off wifi to view my content without having it fetch unwanted email, another nuisance work around.
Why does Apple have a "Check Mail Manually" setting if it does not work??? Why does Apple assume everyone wants to download all of the email that arrives on the server? What happened to giving us a choice? Please bring back the user-friendly Apple that I grew to appreciate and now miss.

Do you mean this happens once when you launch Mail.app, or it continues to happen periodically after you've launched the application and while it continues to run?
If it's the former, this is a known issue that Apple introduced with 10.9 Mail.app; you can try filing a bug at https://bugreport.apple.com - they closed mine as a duplicate of an existing bug (14155759) when i filed 11 months ago and proceeded to do nothing about it through the 10.9.1 - 10.9.5 releases.

Mail App stopped checking mail

Hi. Mail App stopped checking mail suddenly. I was able to check my mail at 10:15 this morning. Now when i tell it to get mail it does nothing at all. I repaired permissions and reboot and still no luck. Any ideas?

Try locating and deleting these two preference/plist files:
~(yourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
~(yourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist

You should have signed in with that address in the first place, but there is a workaround: go to System preferences>Mail, Contacts@ Calendars and add your @me.com address as an account there.

Seems to be the Issue is Syncing emails, now I would recommend you to Remove and Add the Account and try and check if the emails are getting synced automatically.
Hope this is with Single User. If it is with Multiple Users then we need to check the permissions assigned.

My Mac has 4 mail accounts coming into it, but you are correct, one of them is a POP account, (and unfortunately it is the main @ account, and is the one associated with my apple id, since we've had it for years). I couldn't figure out how to replace this with the Imap version, short of deleting that account entirely.
Is this what I have to do?

I just installed Icloud on my Iphone and PC (all versions as required) I checked mail, caledar and task. Outlook shows an Icloud calendar but none of the events that are on my phone calendar. Email is not syncing from phone to pc either. What do i do?

What you've outlined in this part of the post is all that icloud stores for you outside of the backup. If you want to restore from the icloud backup you will then have for all practical purposes a carbon restoration back to your device if you restore from the icloud backup.

Lost the Ability to get Exchange E-Mail while on WiFi at home only

After 2 months of use, my iPhone 5S started doing something very odd last week and still does today. This is all about using my exchange email at home on my (BT) Wi-Fi
No email on my Exchange email with errors of can’t connect to server and no email.
But I can still receive my normal BT personal email.
After a bit of trouble shooting and deleting my exchange account twice already,
I found the following:
I can receive BT email while at home ( BT) WiFi
I can surf the Web while on WiFi at home
I can send and receive when I turn Wi-Fi off when I am at home ( but it’s slower of course)
I can perform any action except receive my Exchange e-mail while on WiFi at home.
I can also get my Exchange email perfectly well when I go to the REGUS offices and use their WiFi.
I can NOT send or receive exchange email while on Wi-Fi at home but I can if I turn off WiFi (so I know it isn't a password issue or exchange). My home Wi-Fi is the top grade and very fast.
NOTHING has changed on my WiFi. NOTHING has changed on either device. I have the latest iOD update which
I have rebooted my WiFi to no avail.
I think I have hit everything.....
I have called Apple twice ( 70 mins) and they blamed BT
I called BT ( 50 mins) and they blamed my exchange host 1and1
I called 1and1 ( 35 mins ) and they said that it works everywhere else and my settings are fine and it must be an APPLE issue. Can someone please help me as I never had these issues with my great Blackberry for 15 years?
I will also mail this to BT and 1and1.

PS. I did log into THE CLOUD last week though and did a back up on my PC, that's all.

The server is forwarded as an existing email with 1and1 hence has a different server setting

As it happens my email suddenly started to work again on my home wifi
Very strange but no doubt it will stop again. The only thing I did was log my iPhone back onto Cloud on my PC.
Maybe that did something?

Iphone automatically checks mail even though it's set to "manual" check

In settings > mail, Auto-check is set to manual, but my phone still vibrates and beeps periodically -- even when it has been asleep and I'm not touching -- announcing that new mail has arrived.
I'm using it to check a yahoo and a gmail account. Why is it still checking mail automatically?

Actually I just figured this out myself. You can turn it off by going to
Settings > Mail
and then clicking on your yahoo account. At the very top of the screen for your yahoo account settings, there's a button that says "Account ON or OFF"
Switching it to OFF means it won't show up at all in your mail program but it also won't push. Switching it back on makes it show up immediately in your mail program again.

Hotmail PW updated, Can't use Mac book Mail program to check mail

I updated my hotmail.com user password . I can log in on a hotmail web browser to check mail.
But if I check mail on the Mail Program on my Mac Pro, the Mail program keep showing me
"Mail can't connect to the account Hotmail.com".

I did the following procedure:
* disabled the existing hotmail.com account,
* add a new hotmail.com account with the same info.
This solved my problem.
I found the non working hotmail.com account with incoming and outgoing servers are "live.com :-
For hotmail.com account , they should be:
Incoming mail "imap-mail.outlook.com",
Outgoing mail "smtp-mail.outlook.com"

2 Question: Check mail on launch/Save Attachments

I have 2 Questions about Mail 2.0.5 in Tiger:
1.Start Checking Mail upon Launch
I have set Mail to check for new mail every 5 minutes, but everytime when I first launch Mail, I have to manually click on 'Get Mail' for the 1st email check, is there a way to start checking email when launch?
2.Save Attachments into a pre-designated folder
How do I save attachments into a folder? Do I set a new Rule with this?? Insides Rules, the closest I can find is "Any Attachment Name", but I don't know how to set this up?
In Entourage, there is 1 rule with Attachments easily set up to move them into another folder or something...

I have a similar issue. I have had Leopard installed for a few months with everything working fine. A few days ago mail stopped working. Mail appears on the desktop but crashes after beginning to bring accounts online. Does anyone know what could be wrong.

Having trouble checking mail

Since the 10.6.2 SNow Leopard my Mail program on my Mac has been really having problems. The spinning thingy just continuing on forever.
Suddenly checking mail on my iPhone is exhibiting the same behavior. It checks forever and never seems to stop. It can't seem to find some mail I've stored in a folder. It is getting a few pieces of mail, but continues to look for more.

Are you accessing the account via POP? If so, having both the Mac and the iPhone trying to access at the same time may cause problems (POP3 is really intended for a single mail client).
