    Help!
    Thanks, Mark

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

  • Try to open mov file with quicktime, says can't open pdf files.

    Hi to everyone,
Suddenly I try to open a mov, any mov file, with quicktime 10.4 and some times opens the finder and nothing more, some times says that it cannot open one pdf document ( a document I actually have but never try to open with QT). some times QT says it canot open some png or jpg file.
But I double click mov files. And the incoherence is permanent, I mean that for the same movie file says it can't open the same pdf file, and in other file the same png, or the same jpg.. it depends on the mov file I try to open.  Like if somewhere, somme kind of cache, adresse or reference is wrong.
this is the text of one of those messages when I double click a mov file:
"The document “phoenixRoomfillerB_v001_0104.jpg” could not be opened. QuickTime Player cannot open files in the “JPEG image” format."
And if I try again and again, at some point QT open only the finder window.
The weird thing is that on the finder window i can see the preview and play the preview. and the same mov files play well with VLC. And if I copy the mov file to my desktop it plays well unless QT start to open only the finder window, if that happens it does not work anymore with any file.
The files are on an external drive with 3 partitions.
And I make all the possible cleaning that I can:
I am the administrator of the imac and I am the only one to use it.
I am the owner of the volume
I use disk utility to check and everything is ok
I use onyx to clean as much as possible, cache, boot, volume structure, smart status, home folder permissions, kernel, extensions, QT components, etc. and everything works fine.

  • HT3775 I am trying to open a .mov file in "Quicktime" and it keeps saying it doesn't support the file.

I have made a movie in "Final Cut Pro X" saved it as a .mov file and "QuickTime" won't open it. It keeps saying that it doesn't recognize the file. Ironically there is another .mov file right next to it on the flash drive that opens just fine. I do notice that the one it does open looks like a little black box with a 'play' arrow button in it when I run the curser over it, but the one it doesn't open has a 'Quicktime' 'Q' in it.
I try to eject the flash drive and it says "Final Cut Pro X" is still using it, then it shows me a window that shows 6% progress. I am thinking maybe the movie is still loading. I really don't know.

    Try VLC.

  • Can't open .mov files in quicktime anymore

I can't think of any system changes that I've made recently but a few days ago I was able to open .mov files with quicktime and now I can't. I get the following error when I try to open one. Error -1856: an unknown error occurred (filename.mov) I've uninstalled quicktime, rebooted and reinstalled with no luck. I've searched these forums and googled the error number but can't find anything. Does anyone know what might be going on? Thanks.

Actually, I can't open anything in quicktime anymore. I've tried opening avis, mov, mp4 and m4a files... all give the same error message and number. I've reinstalled both qt and itunes but no luck.

  • Converting mov files with Quicktime Player for iDevices

I wasn't sure if should post this under iPad or here or at all as it is about coding, but it is about coding for Apple iDevices that can't display Flash, using Quicktime Player or QT Player 7 Pro:
I'm trying to add the ability for Apple iDevices that can't display tutorials I created in Flash, to see them with H.264. I read that I can simply open the original tutorial that luckily is a .mov file with Quicktime Player 10 in Snow Leopard and File > Save For Web and QT will convert to H.264 and also output several files needed to upload to your server.
But the only options are for iPhone, iPhone (cellular) and Computer. I assume an iPod would use the iPhone file, but iPad didn't exist yet.
I chose iPhone and Computer for my test. I got 2 .m4v files a .jpg, a small .mov and a .html page with the code I needed to copy/paste to my target html page.
Uploaded the files and could see the tutorial movie with my iPad fine. Using FireFox, I saw the beginning of the movie, then got the beachball. After a long wait, I tried a force quit and found that my Mac Pro was crashed too so had to hard shut down. Hate that.
Rebooted the computer. Tried accessing with Safari this time and it worked fine.
I also own Quicktime Player 7 Pro pre Snow Leopard (I'm running Snow Leopard now) and tried the conversion with it and noticed a few more config choices, like for frame rate. But the resulting code was about 29 lines of code with expected parameters versus 2 lines of code in the QT Player code which actually really surprised me. With both apps they have JavaScript references for the head tab to files on Apple's library on their site.
So.. I'm wondering why FF and my computer crash, I did output for computer as well as iPhone. And what to do for FF users and the fact that there's no specific output for iPad, am I OK just using the iPhone output since I can see the file OK on my iPad test.
Last, I've been reading about HTML5 versus Flash, but assume that what both my QT apps are outputting is HTML4. In the QT Player code there isn't even an embed tag, let alone the video tag I've read about, just a href to the exported Saved For Web .mov file, which I assume must point to the .m4v files that QT outputs and puts in the same folder as the other files, but there's no direct reference to them.
Sorry for the length, or if this isn't the place for these questions, but I do want to get this right before I convert about 20 tutorials
I wonder if I should wait until Lion and see if QT is changed to fix the FF crash and adds output for iPad?
One last thing: when you access the converted file with an iPad, first you see a jpg of the first frame with "Click to Play" in the center. When you do, you get the movie with a play triangle which you have to press to actually start the movie. But when you access the same html file with Safari, all you have to do is click the "Click to Play" and the movie starts as expected. Bug?

QuickTime X and QuickTime Player Pro create slightly different html code (but it all works about the same way). The "click to play" image file, a "reference" movie, multiple versions for different devices and the html code to preview the page and use as copy/paste into your Web page.
QuickTime X has fewer options than QuickTime Player Pro. The iPhone preset works just fine on the iPad.
Your Firefox crash may have been just coincidence and I doubt it was caused by the page code.
You may want to wait a while longer for the HTML 5 code because browser support is still in the learning stage and millions of PC users still use out of date browsers.
The reference movie points to the different versions of the file. The code "reads" the device and serves up the correct version for it.
I don't own an iPad but I suspect it works like my iPod Touch. All of my QuickTime files have the play "triangle" so the click to play image style page requires two clicks on it.

  • Can't view .mov file with quicktime

Hello. I need help viewing a .mov file with Quicktime 7.5. It was recorded on a Canon Vixia HV30 camcorder and given to me on a dvd. But when I try to view the .mov file with Quicktime, I can hear the audio but the screen is black. Sometimes, it asks me to continue to the following link:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=Windows&ctype=696d64 63&csubtype=69636f64
I'm not that computer savvy - what is wrong? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Sorry. My "then" (above) should have been "they".
They sent you a data DV containing the "source" from the camera and the HDV codec isn't available on your PC so you can't view the file.
Ask the authors to convert the file using H.264 Video codec (or others) so your Windows version of QuickTime can play the file.

I can't open any 60p .mov files in quicktime or FCP5.  Sometimes in QT the audio plays but not the video. Footage was shot on a JVC GY HM150 which is supposed to record in native fcp format.  Any ideas how I can open these files successfully?

Get ClipWrap2 and convert to an editable format for your version of FCP5.
    Probably DVCProHD will work

Premiere Elements 13 has stopped importing MOV. files. Quicktime is installed and working.

    Nowconfused
I tried to get background information on the video from your camera but all I could find so far is that the camera is probably recording
1080p (1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 or 30 progressive frames per second. What are you (manually) or the program (automatically) setting as the project
preset to match the properties of your video source. See Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and the readings for Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size, and Pixel Aspect Ratio even if the fields look grayed out.
How are you importing the files into the Premiere Elements 13 project - with the Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets from a computer
hard drive location or are you making a USB connection between the camera and computer/Premiere Elements 13 and using Add Media/Video ..../Video Importer? Could you possibly have changed the way you are importing the files into a project?
Would it be possible for you to send a small sample of one of these .mov files that will no longer import? Maybe in a Dropbox link that you include in a reply?
Do you have any of the older files still available - the ones that did import at one time? If so, will they still import into a project or do they now not import?
    More later.
    Thanks for the follow ups.

  • .mov file in Quicktime: Audio OK, Video not OK

Reposting this as a new topic, since it was buried in the other thread.
I have a small HD video camera that records .mov files to an SD flash card.
I get audio, but no video. The Quicktime movie inspector says the format is "mbarella AVC encoder 3avcCM@" - then an apparently random selection of symbols that I don't see on my keyboard..
I have bought and activated the Quicktime pro key.
The movie properties window tells me the Video Track in in H.264 format - but I use H.264 a lot, and never have a problem with it.
It's not just one file that is problematic - every video file fails to show on my laptop, though the video files play back without a problem on the camera.
I can't open the file in Quicktime, Real Player, VLC, itunes, iphoto, MPEG Stream clip, or Final cut. I used to be able to open files from this camera on my laptop, but suspect I have upgraded and lost functionality. Saved files that used to play in Quicktime and in iphoto now do not play video - audio is fine, but not video.
I have downloaded the Perian add-on, but that has made no difference.
Any thoughts? I can send a short test file from the camera if necessary.
Hope you have a good weekend!
    Best wishes
    R

Hi Jon - test file sent by email to your address in profile, from my rob....{at}gmail address.
File received and examined. Appears to be a codec problem. Suspect the camera may be using a custom/hybrid encoder. QT is very touchy about such things. Was able to open and play it in both older version of VLC and new version which installed today. Tried transcoding the result to standard MP4 file but the results were not satisfactory.
    Test.mp4
If you download/play this test, you will note that the pan portion is very poorly rendered. Stepping the clip frame-by-frame seems to display some frames out of their natural order. In addition, the clip looses two seconds of playback time as if some frames were either lost during the transcode or the original file had a varying frame rate which was reset to a fixed rate and time reference in the transcoded file. This seems to be confirmed by analysis of the HandBrake conversion below...
    FILE0055.m4v
Used a custom TV preset I happen to be testing in latest Snow Leopard version of HandBrake to create the file which does play back the same as you original file in the VLC player. This preset, among other things, duplicates the original frame rate variations. In this case, analysis indicates the frame rate excursion to be 29.970 -6.008/+30.280 fps which plays the clip in 12.07 seconds and is only 0.03 seconds longer than your original file. The downside to this is the fact that the preset as used here doubles the video rate and quadruples the audio data rate.
You might perform a search to see if a QT component is required for proper viewing of camera content. (I.e., a component that was originally installed on the system that used to play the files--e.g., check software disc that may have come with the camera.) Otherwise, my only suggestion would be to download the latest version of HandBrake and see if you can transcode the files for playback using the standard or currently configured component set installed on your system.
    Good Luck,

  • Can't play HD .mov files (in Quicktime, iMovie, or FCP)

    Hello,
My Powerbook (bought in 2004) is senile and having various problems (see below for more details), so perhaps this issue can't be fixed without fixing the other stuff (or getting a new computer)... but just curious.
I'm helping a friend with a video project, and he brought over his small Lacie external HD with his footage on it-- recorded with an HD video camera, then imported into iMovie HD, now simply a bunch of .mov files in a folder.
When I try to open of the files with Quicktime Pro, it gives me a white screen and plays the sound, and tells me the "component is missing", and that i can try to find it on the Qcktime site, but I couldn't figure out which Codec to try (and you have to pay for them all?). I also tried updating my Quicktime to 7.4, and the exact same thing happens.
When I try to open them with iMovie 4.0.1, it says "Can't open [this file]; skipping and continuing".
When I try to open them with FCP 4.5 HD, it says "Codec Not Found, you may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card"
Any ideas? Should I try erase-and-install with my whole system, after a backup onto my own external HD? I can't reinstall FCP because my disks are in America (I'm in Hong Kong), but even if it doesn't work with that, is there a way to make it work in iMovie?
    Thanks very much--
    Samantha
PS- Background on my computer troubles of late-- in December I was having some problems with various things, which led me to try and repair the hard-disk, which didn't work. Some of my questions/conversation are on this thread.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1256737&tstart=0
Then for Christmas I bought DiskWarrior, ran it, but it couldn't repair the disk/replace the system because of some "error". Which makes me think I have some serious Hard-disk problem-- although the hardware seems fine according to SMART. So right now i'm just trying to get through a few of these big projects before trying erase-and-install with my whole system, and if that doesn't work, then probably investing in a new computer. Time to upgrade perhaps.
Was having some weird problems before, so ended up getting DiskWarrior,

    Hi-
    Referring to this post:
"The AIC codec is installed by iMovie HD and is just what its name implies. Intermediate (temporary conversion from one file format to another).
Your G4 will not be able to play the file past a few frames per second because of the large dimensions and high data rate even if you did find the codec. You'll find editing it using QuickTime or iMovie a frustrating experience because of those facts."
I'm a little confused-- do you mean that the G4 computer is just not strong enough to edit HD files "even if I did find the codec"? I was planning to edit it with Final Cut Pro (have never edited a HD project before), but is my computer not adequate? Let me know if there is any way for me to tackle an HD project with my current laptop-- otherwise I guess I really need to look into a new one.

  • How to view mov files on quicktime?

Recently downloaded a movie made on iphone, which downloaded as a .mov file. However, when I double click, quicktime tries to open it but then I get an error message which says "QuickTime Player can't open "IMG_18621.MOV". and gives me an option: "To see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie, click Tell Me More."  I can't figure out a way past this. I was on Mountain Lion and didn't have this problem, but recently upgraded to Mavericks and this problem has developed. Thanks!

Thank you for your prompt responses. Thought this was the correct answer. Didn't want to pass on incorrect information.
