Checking on the correct way to use Time Machine.
Open Time Machine in Preferance, Click on options,
The only item showing on list is my HD.
Is that correct for every thing to be backed up or should I have other items showing.
Also should my HD be deleated from this list.
Await any help.

no that's wrong. this is TM exclusion list. you add items there that you DO NOT want to be backed up. so currently your whole hard drive is excluded. remove it from there if you want it to be backed up. the only thing that should be present on that list by default is the TM backup drive itself.

Unfortunately, this is not officially supported by Apple......if you still have the 4th Gen AirPort Extreme that you list in your equipment profile.
However, the new "tower" shaped version of the AirPort Extreme does now officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the device. -
MacBook Pro i5 with retina will not recognize WD Passport even though I successfully used it to transfer programs and files from my older MacBook ten days ago. It receives power from the USB, but when using Time Machine I receive the message that there is not an external device connected.
If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues. -
What's the best way to use Time Capsule through Extended Wireless Network?
I am operating four computers, three Apples and a PC. All the Apples use Snow Leopard. I have a large house where the cable company's modem and internet access is located downstairs at the far back of the house. That is where I have a 2Tb 802.11n Time Capsule (TC) connected to the modem by ethernet cable. My iMac is there, connected to the TC by ethernet cable. In the middle of the house, also downstairs, I have an Airport Extreme (802.11n) operating as a wireless bridge. Upstairs in the front of the house (very far from the TC and closer but not very close to the AE) I have a home office. That is where my other two Apples--a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air--are usually located. The PC is located in a bedroom directly above the TC and wirelessly connects to it. At all locations, I get four radio signal strength bars. However, I am not sure that the AE is doing anything, because I get four bars regardless of whether the AE is plugged in, or not. When it is turned on, Airport Utility on all computers shows both the TC and the AE, but I have not been able to find which Airport ID I am actually connected to.
From my home office I do temporarily lose my internet connection from time to time each day, but the connection recovers usually within seconds. I assume this reflects occasional interference or other loss of wireless signal in the distant home office, although I do not see the radio bars diminish to less than the four bars.
All three Apples are set up to use the same TC for backup into Time Machine. However, I have been getting errors on the laptops operating in the home office (a long way from the TC and perhaps connecting directly over wireless or perhaps wirelessly through the AE bridge. Some messages are to the effect of being unable to backup, and others more recently report errors. I think that either due to connection interruptions or merely by suspending or turning off the computer while in the middle of backing up, errors in the Time Machine files were created. I have been unable to delete more than a few of the 8Mb sparsebundle bands so that I can completely get rid of one of the sparsebundles for the MacBook Pro. I was able to get rid of the other sparsebundle for that computer and also the sparsebundle for the MacBook Air. I am reluctant to erase the entire TC, because it has been working for the directly connected (by ethernet cable) iMac sitting right next to the TC.
So, I am wondering what is the experience of others who are trying to use TC successfully from computers located a long distance from the TC with either a direct wireless connection or a bridged wireless connection through an AE or other bridge.
And does anyone have good ideas about how to delete the sparsebundles effectively? I read the various questions and answers in the support community, but so far nothing that I have tried based on those messages seems to work. It seems that when all the Time Machines are set to "Off" and the sparsebundles are expanded to show the individual bands, we ought to be able to delete them fairly expeditiously. Sometimes, I can delete one band fairly quickly, but then the second band will hang forever. More often, I can't even delete the first band.Thank you, Bob. I followed the procedure you stated. My AE is working. I did register its BSSID when I put my laptop next to it. This is also the BBSID I am getting when in my home office at the far end of the house from the TC. This means I am using the extended bridge AE when working and trying to use the automated backup feature in Time Machine. Do you think I should turn off Time Machine on these laptops when they are in the home office, and bring them into the room with the TC occasionally to have a better connection (wireless to TC or by connecting an ethernet cable) when trying to make Time Machine backups for them?
Interestingly (in contrast to the exact match of BBSID's for my AE), when I compared the BSSID for my TC in Airport Utility to the BBSID of the TC using the option key and the fan shaped Airport icon, the BBSID's matched except for the last two digits. In Airport Utility, they are 2F. In the fan shaped Airport icon they are 30.
Also, the AE signal, being centrally located on the first floor of the house, seems to be the one most in use. When I walked my laptop away from the AE all the way back to the TC, the laptop automatically switched over to the TC only once. Most of the time, the laptop is still connecting wirelessly with the AE. To switch back to the TC, I have to turn Airport off, and then turn it back on again.
I don't know how efficient or inefficient the Time Machine is when connecting to the TC indirectly through an AE bridge. -

I found my wife dropping the icon of her backup file into the trash icon on the dock. She had just completed using Time machine and when to uninstall the Gdrive. I told her this was an erroneous practice. She disagreed. Who is right?

I recently purchased a Seagate Goflex Desk 2TB and I've already used Time Machine to backup my iMac running 10.5.8 to the drive. Is there a way to backup my Macbook Pro running 10.6.8 to the drive using Time Machine while the drive is still connected to my iMac? Any help is appreciated!
Choose Connect to Server from the Finder's Go menu, provide the first computer's IP address, log in, and set it up in the Time Machine pane of System Preferences.

I'm wondering if I can plug in our new external hard drive (a 2TB Western Digital) and back up two separate computers using Time Machine without fear of the files from the second computer overriding the first.

This morning, I upgraded to Snow Leopard from v10.5.8. Then, I exported 11 contacts from our old Now Contact database, intending to import that info into Address Book. It was an experiment, as we have 1199 contacts in 20+ categories and want to eventually get them into Bento from Address Book. The export automatically created a file called Export.vcf on the desktop, after I highlighted the 11 contacts. I tried to look at the info, but when clicked it opens Address Book, which then simply asked if I wanted to import the 11 contacts to it. I clicked yes. Then in checking Address Book 7, not 11 contacts appeared. I clicked on "All Contacts" and there were 1630. We only have 1199, so where did the extra 400+ come from? Since I had already clicked twice on the Address Book window, I couldn't undo the import. So I thought 'Ok, I'll trash Address Book and go to Time Machine, find Address Book, go to right after the upgrade to SL, hit Restore and bingo. Nope. I keep getting the post-import info, not pre. Con someone direct me to a solution? I want to get rid of the import contacts plus the extra 300 or so ( I already had a hundred or so in several categories)? Then, I need to figure out (1) why ALL the old records were exported from Now Contact, (2) where they were hiding in that .vcf file when Address Book recognized that I only wanted to export 11, (3) why Address Book showed only 7 imports in the "Last Import" group, but showed ALL my contacts in the "All Contact" group, even though they should nearly all have been safely untouched in the Now Contact DBase file. PS, I am not especially computer savvy. Thanks for any enlightenment.
Booting From Snow Leopard Installer Disc
1. Insert Snow Leopard Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
Drive Preparation and Installation
1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. After formatting is complete quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard. -
What is the correct way to use Version Information from the sequence and from the deployment tool
I seem to be missing something in how the various version numbers are supposed to be used. My end goal is to log and possibly display in the UI the version of the sequence and which installer version was used to inspect a UUT. I have gotten most of the way there using:

The "Deployment Version" in the TestStand Deployment Utility auto incrementing the 3rd position of a version number while the sequence auto increment is working on the 4th.
My first question is are these 2 version numbers in anyway supposed to be related to each other? As it seems to me you would want those 2 reversed, I can make several installers based on sequence version X, making changes to what supporting files are also installed.
If they are not related as I suspect that they are not. How do I programatically grabed the installer version and also log that into the result report?

What's the correct way to use "Relocate Masters?"
I have 100GB of master images on one drive. Twenty gigs of those photos are imported into Aperture already (I use the referenced masters method), and I will be importing the remaining 80 gigs eventually (all referenced). For now I need to move all 100 gigs to another drive. How should I do this in Aperture?
Is "relocate masters" just for the images already imported and part of my Aperture library? Should I just drag and drop the other 80 gigs that are not yet imported? What procedure would you use to accomplish what I need to do? Thanks.No, the best way would be to run relocate masters first and let Aperture move the images that are already imported into it. When that's done drag whats left.
If you drag all the files over Aperture will lose track of the ones imported into it ad you will have to run reconnect master rather than relocate master and while reconnecting works it's not as easy as relocate. -

I am using a Mac G5 with Leopard. My LaCie data drive failed and I replaced it with a WD MyPassport drive, at which time the failed backups began. The recent file updates do appear in Time Machine, but it appears to back up everything since the last completed backup.Hi Norm,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.) -
How do I restore the settings for apps using Time Machine?
I believe there are problems with items within the Library Folder inside the System Folder. For example, there are two "Frameworks" Folders, but one has "(from old Mac)" after its name. I dare not try to remove or even move either.
Back in the day of OS 9, you could modify something, then search for it by "Last Modified" Date, and find where Apple has hidden itscontents. It's not so easy in OS X. I've had some success using Pondini's Time Machine FAQ's, though. Here is how I got to this problem:
Our family MacBook died. After getting a repair estimate of $500 to $700 "if it's the Logic Board," we decided to replace it. We purchased a MacBook Pro running Lion. (Later, we brought it to an Apple Store and were quoted $435 in house or $280, but they would have to send it out. Incredible repair: Logic Board, Top & Bottom Case, Super Drive, Battery, all for $280. No wonder they're #1). I pulled the Hard Dive out, erased it, and installed an older operating system, but during the repair they installed 10.6.
Restored the MBP from the TM backup of the MacBook. OK
The Macbook is repaired and the store showed me how to restore the data from the TM backup.
Restart and the passwords do not work due to restoring a 10.6 machine from a 10.7 backup.
Tech support guides me through resetting an admin password using the password utility on the install DVD.
changed the other passwords inside of Accounts in System Preferences. Then changed the password or the other Admin.
Restart, get a circle with a line through it.

Most Apps work, except iPhoto. Mail is OK sending but only receives on one of 3 accounts.
Is there a fix for iPhoto & Mail? If not, I would plan to erase and use the finder to drag the user folders from TM to the MacBook. Can I just drag the Apps too? How about all of the settings for those Apps?If you don't keep a backup, you can't restore your machine to any state except the state in which you received it, brand new, with none of your own stuff on it. That makes a pretty convincing argument for backing up, doesn't it?
