Checking what has backed up on airport time capsule from iPad

I want to check what the time capsule has backed up from my computer, but my computers harddrive burned out and want to know if there is a way of checking it with my iPad?

If you are asking about Time Machine backups of your computer, the iPad cannot read these files.

  • How can I access my Airport Time Capsule from a remote location?

I have my 2 TB Airport Time Capsule connected to my home wireless network and I have heard it is possible to access my information stored on it from anywhere, but I have no clue how to do this.

Frankly, this is not easy, and not for the faint of heart.  Having someone to help who has done this will save you a ton of time and headaches.
Set up and use Back to My Mac - Apple Support
Before you do anything though, Back to My Mac assumes that you have a simple modem......not a modem/router that is often provided by Internet Service Providers to their customers.  A modem/router.....also called a gateway.....will not allow Back to My Mac to work correctly, so if you do have a modem/router or gateway device, you will need to speak to your service provider to find out if they can provide you with a simple modem.
A simple modem will look something like this:
A modem/router or gateway will look something like this:
Having said this, personally I use another method called Port Mapping to allow my Mac...or an iPhone or iPad connect back to the Time Capsule at home when I am traveling.  But, this is even more complicated than Back to My Mac, so BTMM would be the place to start for most users.
If things look intimidating on first pass and you can locate a good tech to set things up for you, that would be money well spent.

  • TS2706 I cannot connect to my airport (time capsule) from a Windows PC

Any information on how to connect to an aiport extreme (really the time capsule) from a Windows platform. Have no problem from our Mac's but cannot connect from a windows based platform.  I haven't been able to find any recent posts to help with this problem.

First off, Archon23, what you want to achieve is possible.  I have access to both my Time Capsule (TC) and the USB drive connected to it, from a Win. 7 and Win. XP machine.
Here is what I see from the Windows side of things:
From My Computer - TC USB Drive (Y)
From Windows HomeNet - Time Capsule:
Now getting there is the trick.
One caveat before proceeding:  I am not well versed in Windows Networks, Windows Sharing and Firewall settings so some of the following may not be elegant, may not be absolutely required, and may not be the best way of getting there.  But it is what I did to see both the TC drive and it's attached USB  drive on the Windows side of my network..
1.) First, I added Airport Utility to the Inbound rules of Win 7 Firewall
While poking around my Network Sharing and Firewall settings trying to figure this out, I got a Pop-up recommending I do that.  AND I did that. Oh, and while you are at it, make sure you have a Home network established.
2.) Next, on a hunch, I installed a USB Wi-Fi Adapter (under $20) to my Win PC, enabled that Wi-Fi connection and disabled my Ethernet connection.  I was getting no where on this matter with my Ethernet connection to a DSL Gateway.  But with a Wi-Fi connection to my AirPort Express Base Station, I made progress.
3.) Finally, while poking around my Network Sharing Center some more, one by one I started the various network device Setup Wizards in there, and Trouble Shooters, to find the elusive TC/USB devices in question...AND voila, it worked.   And it's stable, been this way for going on two weeks now.
    Good luck.

  • How To Access Airport Time Capsule From Outside Home?

I had Purchased new Airport Time Capsule 2TB, i successfully add it to my local network of the my Home, and connected well remotely with my Mac on the local network.
Is there any way to access my backup files on Airport TC while I been out side home over the internet?
    MacBook Air (11-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Already answered in your other thread.
There is no need to post in Airport and Time Capsule areas.. both are serviced by the same crew.

  • Can't back up to my Time Capsule from iMac.

Had to disconnect my Time Capsule from the iMac to troubleshoot an ISP problem.  Upon reconnect I am unable to back up to my Time Capsule via Time Machine.  I keep getting the following error message after the backup starts and immediately fails:  Time Machine could not complete the backup.  The network backup disk could not be accessed because there was a problem with the network username or password.  Open Time Machine preferences to select the network backup disk and re-enter the correct username and password."
The network name and password are fine, because I am connecting to it via iPhones and a MacBook without problems.  When I select my Time Capsule in preferences as the disk to use for backup, a window opens requesting the Time Capsule password, which I enter and then select "Connect" in that window.  Still, after the two minute countdown, the backup fails and I am back to square one.  Any assistance would be appreciated!!

OK, after posting my problem, I noticed the "More Like This" list.  Clicked on one of those and it said to rename my Time Capsule to take out the "apostrophe s" in the name.  That solved the problem!!

  • Accessing Time Capsule from iPad 1st Gen.

I want to access my Time Capsule from my iPad 1st Generation, but the option to "Set up an AirPort Base Station" is not showing up on the iPad's "Wi-Fi Networks" screen.

"All you need to do is plug in your Time Capsule and connect it to your DSL or cable modem. Then simply select your Time Capsule in Wi-Fi settings in iOS 5, or from the Wi-Fi menu in OS X Lion, and follow the instructions."
I understand this to mean that you would configure the iPad to connect to the wireless network that the Time Capsule is providing. So, it would connect just like any other computer.
You select the wireless network, enter the password to connect and you are on the network.
AirPort Utility would only be used if you have a brand new Time Capsule that you want to configure.
If you are asking if the iPad can "read" normal files on the Time Capsule (not Time Machine backups), then you will need an app like App Store - FileBrowser - Access files on remote computers (and Time Capsule)
Really sounds like you have questions for the iPad Support Area.  Please follow up there:

  • Can we use Time Machine to back up data on Time Capsule from the outside of network?

I have Time Capsule at home.  Can I use Time Machine to back up data of portable nootebook when I am working at office?

If you mean over the internet, you can but it will be so slow and more than likely so unreliable it is a poor method to use. Remember all internet is limited to upload speed.
Lion does a temporary backup onto local hard disk.. which is useless of course if the hard drive is damaged.. but helps if you delete an important file. Then when you go back home and it discovers the TC is available it will then backup again from where it left off.
I think it is only a major issue if you are away from home for major lengths of time, weeks or months.

  • USB printing through Time Capsule from Ipad or iphone

I connected my printer thru the USB of my Time Capsule, and I can print wirelessly from my iMac, but my iPhone and my iPad do not see the printer. It has to be air printing enable or is there other way to do it?
    Thanks!!

The bottom line here is the mobile devices use a different operating system than a Mac computer.

  • Is it possible to change setting on a airport time capsule from windows? open ports etc.

as above, need to know this. If this is not possible i can not buy it because that would mean I lock other users out of being able to configure ports and such.

Thanks for your answer! Then i can only hope they upgrade the aiport utility software on windows so it works on current version. Until then no purchase for me:(

  • Do I need to resize the sparsebundle file after migrating to new larger AirPort Time Capsule?

Just upgraded my Airport Time Capsule from an old 1TB to a new 2TB version.
I have migrated the sparse.bundle file by using the ethernet method but now I want to know if I need to resize the file using Disk Utility or does it happen automatically? If it doesn't resize automatically then Apple should at least have some option to automate this process as it seems a natural request.
Over time people would want to continue using their same old back up and just allow the file to get bigger as it is moved onto a newer larger device and still have access to all the previous old backups all on one device/system.

It should continue to resize automatically or would if Yosemite worked properly.. since TM in Yosemite is lousy it might well need you to fix it.. It isn't hard.

  • Ipad backup to airport time capsule

Well i threw down the green backs for the airport time capsule 3tb.  The best buy guys swore up and down that I could back up my ipad3 to it.  I decided to err on the side of caution and read the manuals before breaking the celophane on the box.  I cannot find any references to being able to back up anything other than mac pc's.  Anyone tried it yet?

iOS devices like the iPhone, iPad and iPod back up to iTunes on your Mac or PC.....or.....to iCloud.
Then, if you back up your computer to the Time Capsule, everything is backed up, including the iOS backups stored as a part of iTunes.
it is not possible using Apple supported methods to back up an iOS device directly to the Time Capsule....or any other hard drive for that matter.
The best buy guys swore up and down that I could back up my ipad3 to it.
You might want to review this Apple support document with them. Maybe they know something that Apple does not?

  • Airport Time Capsule (HD)

Can you change the name of the hard drive on the Airport Time Capsule from data to something else?

Yes, if you erase the HD first. Do that with AirPort Utility. The name can be anything you want, but you'll be doing yourself a favor if you keep it short, with no spaces. If you are using it for Time Machine backups you should also delete the Time Machine .plist file present on any source volumes after changing its name.
If you want to change the name without erasing it, I don't have a definitive answer for you. If it is possible I am quite certain it will result in Time Machine problems that may be more trouble than they're worth.
