Children at my Mac – non-removable dock icons

The main reason I created a separate user account for my four-year old son was to allow him making a mess without annoying anybody. Which turned out to be a very wise decision. Even when he was a small baby he had the special gift of activating some obscure Mac OS X function I never knew existed – and of course I always had a hard time finding out how to deactivate it afterwards.
So there he goes with his own account, happily dragging files around in Finder and making a mess of his very own desktop. Now, a while ago he proudly showed me what he did to his dock. I have to admit it was an amazing sight. He had dragged about two dozen files, most of them Objective-C header files, to the dock, squishing up all the programs in the far left corner. Well done, or so I said, until a week later I tried to clean up for him.
I don't know what sort of sticky glue he must have used, but now I cannot pull those header files off again, I can't even rearrange them. Same for the program icons. When I bring up the context menu, it doesn't show the 'remove from dock' option. It looks like the dock is locked or something.
So again, my son's discovered some feature I didn't even know existed. Can anybody tell me how to unlock the dock again?
cheers
Hendrik
P.S. I'd love to share the screenshot, but I don't think Apple discussions permit uploads, or do they?

OK, so here's what it looks like:
The icon's do not even pull off. I can activate the context menu by holding the touchpad button, but if I try to drag an icon off, the icon simply unhighlights and nothing happens.
@Niel: I tried the defaults write, but didn't help. I find the idea of my son hacking a 'defaults write' command into the Terminal to lock his creative artwork absolutely thrilling, but it's about as improbable as the infinite improbability drive.

  • How to remove dock icon on Mac when main stage is hidden?

I'm trying to implement a "minimize to system tray" functionality, where when the user closes the app's window, it disappears from the task bar and can be retrieved from the system tray. This works great on Windows and Linux, but on the Mac, the window closes, but the app's icon remains in the dock. Clicking on the dock icon focuses the app, but (perhaps unsurprisingly) does not open the window, which is a pretty bad user experience. Opening the window from the system tray works, so if I could just hide the dock icon I'd be there.
I found the undocumented PlatformImpl.setTaskbarApplication(false), but it doesn't seem to have any effect. Probably only does something at launch time.
    Bug or feature?
(I'm using the new Platform.setImplicitExit(false) to keep the app from exiting when the main stage is hidden, but I see the same behavior when using the "create an off-screen dummy stage" kludge in 2.1.)

Whatever you did last time didn't work - don't try that again!
Back up everything before you begin.
Bootcamp Assistant (in Applications/Utilities) will remove Windows partitions, however I expect in this state it will remove the Windows 7 partition. It may resolve the issue, but it will delete all the Windows data. Perhaps Bootcamp Assistant does something extra compared to deleting the partition by hand?
If it still has the multiple boot icons you will have to erase the HD completely and then restore your OS and user data.
Do you really want to erase & start over for this minor issue?

  • Remove Dock Icon

Is it possible to remove the Virtualbox icon from the Dock while it's running?
    Thanks for the help.

Perhaps the question was too vague and that's why there has been no response. Or maybe nobody knows. Let me try to elaborate.
I run Virtualbox with a guest OS on my iMac. Unfortunately there is no way to easily remove the dock icon from the dock while the application is running. It's rather useless and a waist of space to have the icon in the dock with OSX 10.7 or 10.8. Mission Control and Command+Tab offer easy ways to switch to the desktop with the VM. So that being said I would very much like to remove the dock icon for this application but I can't seem to find any relevant information about this process on the Internet.
Does anyone know of a way to remove the dock icon of a running application from the dock? Perhaps a terminal command that will do the job or a different application. Any input will help. Thanks.

  • Running MBP with Snow Leopard 10.6.8. - Non Visible Dock Icons

Several Apple Applications are no longer visible on the Dock. They haven't disappeared - they are there, but there is a blank space where they are. If I open one, there is a blue dot underneath it.
Removing from Dock and returning it there and saying keep in dock do nothing.
They are there, just not visible. There is a blank space in between Icons.
In between Address Book and iTunes is where iChat is.
The specific ones ore iChat and TextEdit - so far.
    Can someone help?
    Thanks, Brad

Several Apple Applications are no longer visible on the Dock.
What were you doing when you noticed that your icons became invisible?
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.

  • Eed to click twice on dock icon to see buddy list?

Ichat app is Off, I click once on the iChat iCon (in the dock) the application becomes active, I can hear the chime (user available) in the background but no iChat window. I have to click twice on the icon to see the iChat window. When I start iChat from the application folder it works great.
    Tried:
    remove dock icon and reinstall
    deleted ichat pref files
    no luck so far.
Is there anything I can do to make it work correctly from the dock?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Using the Red Dismiss button does not Quit the application as it does in some other apps.
if the Buddy List is dismissed and then iChat is Quit then this is remembered between iChat Start ups (Using the iCon to reveal or windows is only a temporary over-ride.)
Use the iChat Menu Bar > Windows to reveal the Buddy List
Use the Red Button to dismiss again
Repeat getting it back with the menu item or keyboard strokes it lists.
When you shut down iChat now it should remember that the buddy list was open when it was Quit.
If this does not work delete com.apple.ichat.plist from you Users/(your account)/Library/Prefernce folder and restart iChat.
This method is a bit more drastic as it also deletes Bubble colours, font choices, saved Status Messages and the like

  • How do I remove an icon from the dock of an iMac 10.9.5.?  Dragging doesn't work although I have tried a number of different places.  I recall right clicking used to give me a remove option.

How do I remove an icon from the dock of an iMac Maverick, 10.9.5?  I've tried dragging different places: desktop, finder list etc.  No luck.

Drag up towards the centre of the screen & hold for a second or so. The icon will have the 'smoke cloud' appear, let go & it will be removed.
There should also be a 'Remove from Dock' option in the popup menu. It is in the 'Options' section . ctrl+click will 'right click' if right clicking is disabled.
If this is not possible the Dock is locked (this may happen on a 'Managed Mac' normally setup by a company or school etc). See your tech support in this case.

    Hello,
Sorry you are frustrated. If you have improvements you would like to make, you can file them to the [[Suggestion Box]] and the Firefox logo in the top left with upside down arrow is the Firefox button containing menu items. Try a clean reinstall as instructed below to see if it resolved your issue.
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

I have a problem with iphoto (have a mac book pro): the icon in the dock appears with a question mark, and the application is gone!!! Can someone tell what's going on? Yesterday I had the same problem with itunes: I downloaded the last version (it's free), but I cannot do the same with iphoto, and more important: I need to know what is happening!!! Please help me!

Applications should not disappear all by themselves.
If they are then that coud indicate serious problems with your hard drive.
Backup everything up as quickly as possible.
Using Disk Utility verify your system disk.

  • Updated apps break links with dock icons (Mac OS)

When apps are updated via the CC desktop app, they sometimes (not always) come down with a new name which causes the link in the dock to break.
This would be a nuisance with one or two apps, but when a CC user has (like I do) a dozen icons in their dock it means that every major update requires several broken dock icons to be replaced. And if (like me) the user has more than one login on their machine (for separate personal and business workspaces) then the nuisance is doubled.
For example, I have just downloaded "Adobe Edge Animate CC 2014.1", which has removed the earlier version leaving an orphaned dock icon ("Adobe Edge Animate CC 2014"), for the sake of adding ".1" to the file name.
As a general principle, version numbers do not belong in an application name; there is a perfectly good field in the file info window for version number which is where practically every other vendor puts theirs.
This comes on top of the muddle of versions which has meant there are three "current" versions of some apps, for instance Photoshop (CS6, CC and CC 2014).
The other problem with your system is that in a few short months "CC 2014" apps will be outdated, if not in practise, certainly in name.
Some creative brains need to be exercised on this, don’t leave it to the nerds.

If it happens in a new user you may be able to repair this with the 10.5.4 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Mac OS X: Is there something like com.apple.eawt to set dock icon?

    Hi,
I want to set the dock icon of my application in Mac OS X.
I have expected that it can just be set with the stage.getIcons().add("icon") because that's the way how it works in Windows 7.
After I googled, I found that it can be done with a library: com.apple.eawt.
There are also other thing like bouncing icon in the dock:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/15079783/how-to-make-my-app-icon-bounce-in-the-mac-dock
I would have guessed, that stage.toFront() would make it bounce, because in Windows 7 that method makes the application blink in the task bar (it's quite similar).
I'd like to see an API for things like that in JavaFX. Is there already a feature request?

Well ok, and what about some other methods?
I need to get the user's attention.
For Windows 7 I can use toFront() method.
For Mac I need this library, right?!
I think a feature request for something like javafx.application.Application#requestUserAttention() would be fine, no?
And I think stage.getIcons().add("icon") should also set the dock icon for Mac.

  • Dock icons disappear after 10.5.7 upgrade & .mac sync

    Hi -
I have recently upgraded to 10.5.7, but now I am "loosing" dock icons after a .Mac (mobileme) sync. If I place an icon in the dock, it will remain in-place for about ~5 seconds then disappear completely.
I tried renaming my ~/Library, logging out then logging in, and although it was a "fresh" user the dock was working correctly (I could drag apps into it just fine with disappearing).
When I replaced my real ~/Library, the disappearing dock icon issue returned.
Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone know what is going on with the 10.5.7 upgrade to cause this issue? I have quite a lot of necessary things in my Library (about 21gb worth) so can't really do without it.
    TIA,
    C.

    Thanks for your reply.
I couldn't reset the mobile me sync data; the settings would not save and also my various machines which are sync'ed via mobile me were not displayed.
So I used TimeMachine to restore a copy of my Library (from a version which was about a week old) and all seems back to normal now. I then reset the sync database as you suggested, which worked fine. Thank goodness for backups!

  • Is there anyway to make the dock icon bounce on Mac OS X via a javascript event inside a web page?

I'm creating a task management web app, that will be kept open in a tab, and used only when needed to update a your status, an I would like to bounce the icon when new task is assign to the user or other event regarding him occurs.
It would be also nice if I could some how let my application know if Firefox is currently in foreground so I could turn off the bounce of the icon.
And for it to be complete, it would be nice for my app to somehow let the user know that there was an activity it the tab ( to change somehow to color of the tab or use some sort of badge )
Of course, the dock bouncing or the change of the tab state should not take the focus of the users current application or move the focus from one tab to the tab of my web app.
    P.S.
I know that I could do an alert() but this option is way to intrusive ( it probably does bounce the icon, but when in browser it takes the focus to my app tab and I hate that )
    Thanks in advance

I would like to remove the icon for PHOTO BOOTH from the dock only, not the computer. Is this possible and if so, how do I do it? Running OS 10.9.3

Click & drag it away from the Dock; or Ctrl (right) click it, choose Options - Remove From Dock.

  • Lock Mac OS X 10.5.8's dock icons?

    Hi!
Once in a while, my client and I accidently drag an icon while clicking on it to make it go away. Is there a way to lock these dock icons so they won't move and vanish? Yes, our hands aren't steady since we're old.
    Thank you in advance.

Weird. Web browsers' secured web sites did not work like https://gmail.com, https://webmail.earthlink.net, https://google.com, etc. I don't see how that is related to Parental Controls' changes for dock modification?

  • Mac Mail: Unread mail counter on dock icon shows "phantom" unread mails

The mailconter of my Mac Mail icon on the dock shows 25 unread messages, but I'm unable to find these inside Mac Mail as unread messages.
I did check all mailboxes and their subfolders for any undread messages that might be inside them, but I didn't find any.
Is there any way to reset or recalculate the unread mail counter for the dock icon?

    Hi Robert
The proposed rebuild did suddenly reveal the 25 unread mails insinde my archive mailfolders. By marking these as read again now shows the correct count of unread mails on the dock icon.
Thanks a lot, your hint was most helpful!
