Children's Laptop Software

My kids have had a laptop for a while but up to now they have been happy using the bookmarks I have set up to go to the likes of CBBC, CITV, Etc. However, now my eldest is getting better at reading, writing and spelling I'm starting to get concerned about stuff he might come across on the web. We try where ever possible to be with him when he's surfing anyway so we can keep an eye on things but it's just not possible to be able to be there 100% of the time.
I've been looking at this Parental Controls and wondered if anyone has any experience of this or an alternative they can suggest?

Welcome to  Discussions!
If the laptop is only used by your children, you can use a variety of methods to filter content coming into the computer via the browser being used. If it only has Safari this could be very simple, but can still be done with any browser. The link you provide is for a keylogger, which doesn't actively block access to sites, it is meant to record what's been done on a computer. If you want to protect before the fact, there are programs to filter content like Net Nanny. Such software is more likely to be obvious to the users (your children) and thus more likely to be found and possibly attempted to be overcome. It is also not free, but is going to be quite simple to use.
A more advanced option could be a PAC file which would prevent access to undesirable sites at deeper and more user transparent level. There's a good pre-made PAC file available from HostsFile.org called King of the PAC, and there's a link for the UNIX version you should use on your Mac. Using a PAC file would require more time and care on your part to set up, but is free and will more deeply, effectively, and transparently filter content.

  • New Laptop, Software, Printer, Purchase Quandary

    Hi
Any insight would be helpful. I'm considering buying new MacBook Pro with 2.2 Ghz Core 2. Only reason I'm considering new purchase is my printer just died. Looked around in Circuit City for replacement printer. All of their stock is made for OSX 10.3 or better. I'm running 10.2.8 now, and will need to buy 10.3 since the operating system is not a update. If I buy new laptop, I'll also have to upgrade to one of the Adobe CS packages which I should do by August (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop only). Can I just upgrade my old laptop to 10.3 from 10.2.8? Not sure if all of these software are ready for Core 2 model, or 10.3. Anyone know the answer to my delemma? My other choice is to go to Ebay and buy the same printer that just died. Thanks for any suggestions.

"Can I just upgrade my old laptop to 10.3 from 10.2.8?"
Yes, if it meets the System Requirements
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
Once an OS has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.9 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.

Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."
Download the Media Exchange Program Order Form Here. Note that the date on that form is March 19, 2007, but the program was extended to reflect Orders must be mailed by June 22, 2007.
I suggest that if you choose that route, call Apple to ensure that is is still available.
AppleRescue, also sells a Tiger installation set on CD.

Buy the new MacBookPro too! But why not wait until Leopard is released for that? Then you'll have two great up-to-date Macs!

  • Incompatible Children's Learning Software

I guess there's no hope of running children's s/w requiring a lower version of the Mac operating system? Just bought three learning games for my preschooler that run on OS X 10.1.5 or lower... I am on 10.6.4. Thank you!

"cannot open the application because the Classic Environment is no longer supported." I thought problems could only arise if your operating system was too old
It's not just the operating system. Classic is PPC, and can't run on Intel Macs. Older versions of OSX did support Classic, but only on PPC Macs.
Is this software still being sold? If so it should warn that it won't run on any Macs sold since August 2006. OSX came out in 2001, If they haven't updated their software since then, they aren't really interested in selling it.

  • I updated my laptop software and everything is gone

I got a notification to update my software. So I updated my software and then after a day or two I log onto my laptop and everything is gone. All my pictures, music, videos and documents are all gone due to that software update. I would like everything back. I backed up my laptop and in the back up section there is nothing there either.

    Hi,
You can see the Windows.OLD folder on the C: drive?

  • Restore laptop software to factory condition

Before I sell my laptop how should i prepare it. The HDD will be new.
I will install windows 7 and activate, then plug in ethernet cable, then install all windows updates/drivers
is there any other HP specific stuff i should download?

    Hi there:
If you're using Recovery discs/USB to restore everything to factory settings, I suggest you buy HDD of at least same capacity as the one that came with your laptop. You'll not need to download any drivers from your support page if recovery media is used.
If you're using Windows 7 ISO installation media for CLEAN INSTALL, then HDD capacity restriction is not a problem. Phone activation of Window 7 should be done on installation.
There is nothing else to worry about.

  • Children's monitoring software for a MacBook

I have recentlhy purchased my 12 year old a MacBook and want to install some monitoring software.
Does anyone know of an effective home use monitoring software, ideally with emailed reports.

There is parental controls that is already built in. System Preferences > Accounts > Select the account > Enable Parental Controls. You can check out the options and see if that suites you.
Here's a review of a couple of them. I have a cousin who had cyber patrol on his PC and I went over and it was a pain, but I can't say anything about the Mac version because I've never tried it and because things differ between operating systems. If you want more info about parental control programs search on google.

We are fellow users here on these user-to-user forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support. It's not a good idea to post your email address on any public forum (unless you like spam emails).
There is also no need to shout, apart from anything else it makes posts difficult to read, and may also mean that people don't reply to your posts.
iOS devices (iPads, iPhones, iPod Touches) don't need authorising/deauthorising, that only applies to your iTunes account on computers. If you have already 'deauthorised all' in the past 12 months then you will need to try contacting iTunes Support and see if they can 'deauthorise all' again so that you can then reauthorise the computers (up to 5) that you still have and need : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/- click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

  • Purchased an HP Photosmart 5520 all in one printer last year and a Macbook Pro in Jan. They worked together up to June. In Sept. when I tried to print wirelessly, it would not print. The laptop had been updated. Tried to update the printer via HP,couldn't

I have an HP Photosmart 5520 all in one printer and a MacBook Pro. Bought the MacBook Pro in Jan 2013 and the printer in Dec 2012. I was able to print to the wireless printer up until June 2013. In September, when I tried to use them together, I could not print. During the period between June and Sept., my laptop software was updated. I have tried to update the HP software on my laptop, but could not. What can I do to use this printer with my MacBook Pro? Please help!

The MacBook Pro is running at least 10.7.

  • Where is the software for the Lenovo G550???

I want to do a clean install and replace the pre-installed Vista with Windows 7.
I see that the Lenovo G550 download page has drivers for Windows 7, but where is the pre-installed software, like Veriface, camera software, and all other pre-installed Lenovo software? I looked at all OS options for the G550 on the download page, and NONE of them had the G550 laptop software, all they had for each OS option was only  the drivers.
I understand that I can make a recovery DVD, but as I understand  it, it will return the system to the factory fresh state (all pre-installed programs installed, but also with the factory installed VISTA  - yuck!). I didn't see any option to only re-install the  Lenovo software without also re-installing the OS.
When I look at the download pages for other Lenovo  laptops, I see that they have drivers AND SOFTWARE, but the G550 has no software except for the drivers. Since the G550 came with no software disks, and there doesn't seem to be any of the software online, how exactly does one do a clean installation of an operating system, and then re-install the Lenovo software, on a G550?
I was able to find downloads of programs like Veriface on the Lenovo site for different laptop models, but unfortunately those were much older software versions, and for a different Operating system.
Why can't Lenovo post all of the software online? If they aren't going to provide the software on DVD when they ship the PC, then they should at least have it online; so that people can do a reinstallation if necessary. DELL doesn't seem to have a problem putting all of the software for their PCs online, and they also provide it on disk with the PC.
Do I have to find the hidden backup partition and then copy the Lenovo software installation files to a DVD or different drive myself? Has anyone done this, and if so, can they please provide some assistance as to the best way to accomplish this task?
If there is a different/easier way to accomplish my end goal of a G550 with a Windows 7 clean install, and also with a re-installation of all pre-installed Lenovo software, I would be extremely grateful for any assistance. If there is also a way for me to select which factory software I wanted to install, that would be even better ( I don't need all of the crapware that came on the PC)
    Thanks in advance,
    Sven

Thanks, I'll give that a try when I finally get the Windows 7 upgrade disk.
It seems ridiculous that Lenovo doesn't support this product for Windows 7, especially when they mentioned the "FREE" upgrade (with ridiculous "shipping and handling charge") to Windows 7 on the web page where I ordered it. Being a reasonable person, I assumed that when they offered a "Free" upgrade to Windows 7 with the PC, they would also provide the basic software to allow the built-in hardware like webcams to keep on functioning as they did under Vista.
Had I known that they would refuse to offer any software on disks or download, I would have ordered a DELL or some other PC that has a reasonable level of customer service. I am not a typical user; I don't call in for customer support. All I need is the software and drivers, and I will install it myself.

  • HP Officejet 8600 Cannot install software because printer is not detected on the wireless network

    Hello,
recently I faced an issue with my new HP Officejet N911a: when trying to install software & drivers, I get an error "printer is not found on the network". Here is my setup and what I tried already:
    - printer is connected to home wireless network (there is solid blue light on the printer etc). It has an IP address 192.168.x.x
    - Windows 7 (64-bit) Lenovo laptop is connected to the same wireless network
    - I don't have any MAC filtering
    - I broadcast my SSID and have WPA-PSK
    - I have default Windows 7 firewall
I was installing the latest drivers from HP website, but when it comes to installation, software never "sees" my printer on the network. I'm able to ping it and access from Windows explorer (by typing printer's IP address \\192.168.x.x).
I can install the printer via "Add printer", and wireless printing works fine, but in this case I'm unable to scan (error message is "Scanner communication cannot be established"). So I assume, that for scanning, I definitely need HP software.
If I connect the printer via USB to my laptop, software installs and I can scan without any issue. However, I would like printer to work wirelessly...
    Does anybody have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I don't have a similar printer to check but for few models the default scan to computer is Disabled, please don't ask me why. And we, users, have to enable this by:
Double click printer icon on desktop,
      Click Manage Scan to Computer,
      Click Enable
You may want to tick the last square too.
New software update may remove this option, please use HP Scan from All Programs > HP > HP [your printer] > HP Scan
    Hope this helps.

  • Using iPod with external Hard Drive connected to laptop

Is there a way to use the iPod video and an external hard drive connected to a Dell Latitude D600 laptop at the same time? I can use one or the other but not both. When both are connected using the usb ports on the back of the laptop, the iPod is not recognized, the message pops up saying unknown device. I do have the laptop connected to the power outlet. I have no problem using both when I am connected to the usb ports on the docking station at work, only when I have the stand alone laptop at home. I am using a 250GB Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 hard drive.
I found an article on CNet that suggested updating the bios and laptop software. I did this and still have the same issue.

You might have a drive letter conflict.
Both USB devices might be trying to use the same drive letter, and they're sort of "fighting" with eachother over who gets the letter assigned.
Try changing the drive letter of one of your devices.
You can use this article as a reference for changing the drive letter.
