Chinese characters missing in PDFs (Preview)

Hi there!
In many of the Chinese language PDFs from journal articles, bits are missing: rare characters, western letters and numbers. The PDFs display fine in Adobe Reader, but not in Preview, Devonthink, and on the iPad in PDF expert.
Any suggestions what I can do to get these display properly? As a historian, a lot of my material contains rare charaters.
Thanks in advance!

Too bad that is the case... Adobe Reader is not my favourite app, but if it is the only way I can see what the number of a footnote is, I don't have much choice
Thanks Tom! I'll just hope somebody else drops by with a miracle cure.

  • Characters Missing in PDF

I just created a Pages document with a table and in two different cells I typed '20th Century Fox.' I used Superscript (Format>Font>Baseline>Superscript) to elevate the 'th' in '20th.' It looks fine in Pages but when I Export to PDF, everything after the '20' in those cells disappears.
I think this has to be a bug as I cannot figure out what sort of user error could cause this. Has anyone else seen this and do you have a workaround?

I feel like I've just spotted the Abominable Snowman. I received an email from Apple based on this thread. Has anyone ever heard directly from Apple on one of these forums? You think it's some odd sort of spam? I've waited to post about it because I feared, like the Yeti, they might scare off easily. Since they haven't written back to my reply, I'll post the conversation here:
We have heard about your issue from the discussion thread below:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6931276
We would like to know if you would be able to provide the following:
    - OSX and Pages versions
    - a copy of the Pages document that shows characters missing after exporting to PDF
    Thank you,

  • Characters missing in PDF export on Windows

I have a EPS logo placed in InDesign.
When I export to a PDF there are characters missing in the PDF:
When I check the PDF's fonts it lists them as using a custom encoding.
When my collegue uses the same logo in InDesign on a Mac, all the characters are included in the PDF and the fonts are listed as using ANSII encoding.
If we open the logo in Illustrator and export it as an EPS, it works properly on both platforms. However, since we typically place this type of logo via scripting, we would like to be able to either have a fix for the bug or be able to identify the what types of logo files causes this issue so can automatically check the logo before using it. Is this a known problem?

Hmm .. (HelveticaNeue was a likely candidate for the source of your problem if, and only if, the file was made on a Mac -- its system version of HN is a bit ... messed up ... by Apple.)
Just for clarity, can you check with what software this EPS was made? Open it with a regular text editor, that info should be somewhere in the first lines, usually in a line that starts with "%%Creator:".
If you drop the EPS file on Distiller, is the resulting PDF okay?

  • Chinese characters appear OK in preview but not when printed

I am working on sap script .
In which I am facing problem in printing Chinese character.
In the spool(print preview) I am able to see Chinese characters printed but while printing on a paper it is appearing as '#' Characters.
I am using Font Family as COURIER in basic settings and If I try changing Font to CHSONG(Chinese character font), alignment getting distorted.
I have tried several options available in SDN, but not able to find exact solution on the issue.
Please help me with proper solution.

    HI friend,
Try changing the device type which suits the Chinese font. There are many device types which support device types.
    Example : CNSAPWIN.
Just try this friend. If you face queries please revert back to me i will help you.

  • Characters missing from .pdf the number #1 missing

I have invoices vendor emails me in .pdf. When I open them in google docs all of the #1 are missing? I download and save them from mail, open in Apple Preview still missing all of the #1? Open in Adobe Reader and looks perfect all of the #1 are there, so then I print to my brother printer and all of the #1 are missing from the printed document? If I use Apple mail, same thing no #1.
Of course when I contact the vendor and explain the problem, I am told "oh apple, well that is the reason. We use PC".

I see this is an old post... but perhaps this is still helpful.
I was having a similar problem with disappearing characters on documents sent to me from a certain company.  Just like you, Preview left out certain characters, Adobe Reader displayed it correctly but didn't print it correctly.  Then I noticed the Advanced option in the Adobe Reader print dialog:  "Print As Image".  That worked.
I think that this forces Adobe to actually compose the page and send the composed page to the Mac printing system, rather than just sending PDF through to the Mac printing system.  A little slower, it seemed, but better than garbage.

  • Chinese characters copying incorrectly when saving pdfs with Preview

So this is a very strange problem. When I save a .pdf that I have annotated in Preview, it saves fine and everything continues to display correctly. However, if I then try to copy Chinese characters from the pdf, it pastes gibberish. F'rex:
    灿烂辉煌 becomes "3456"
    and
    遇到的问题 becomes " !"
Does anyone know what is going on and how to deal with it?

The strange part is that initially the Chinese characters copy fine. It's only after I save the .pdf that copying goes all wonky.
I think there is a bug related to annotation.
Is there any way to control what encoding Preview uses when saving?
No. PDF is the worst possible format to use for any kind of editing.
Have you tried Adobe Reader? Or Skim?

Preview is not always the best option.

  • Chinese Characters not display when PDF for marketing doc

    Hi All,

    Hi Gordon,
I have applied the various asian language service pack for the Adobe Reader.
However, i am still not able to see the Chinese Characters in the PDF document when click on the PDF at SAP B1's Toolbar.
Step 1 : Update a PLD with Chinese Characters (as text or from database field). Eg. AR Invoice.
Step 2 : Set the PLD as Default Layout.
Step 3 : At AR Invoice, call out an existing Invoice, click on Preview. Chinese Character is able to be previewed and printed.
    Convert to PLD.
Step 4 : At AR Invoice, call out an existing Invoice, click on PDF button at the Toolbar. Preview the PDF document. No Chinese Characters are displayed.
Is it due to Localisation? Localisation = Singapore
    Please advise.

  • Chinese character overlap in PDF file

    Hi guyz,
I am working on the issue on Chinese character overlap in PDF file.
There is smartform which is being used to generate ePaySlip(Comes in email) in PDF file format which contains Chinese and English both characters.
Now the issue is that at the bottom of the ePaySlip there is a Remark section which is maintained in Chinese and English both. However, the English sentences are proper withour any problem whereas the same thing in Chinese is showing as distorted/overlapped in few words.
Can anyone suggest what could be the cause and suggest some solution.
As when I checked in smartform those characters are hard coded and Chinese characters are shown as ###.
Please response, I would be really grateful.
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hi,
there a different things to know.
I produce sapscript forms with cinese and english characters for frontend / backend and archiv printing.
    Please check:
Editor displays ###: You have to install the chinese language in your e.g. windows-system to display them.
Script: You have to chose the the font family "CNSONG" (customized for chinese simplified and LATIN).
Transaction I18N: May you have to set correct subfonts for the unicode areas (Cascading fonts, Standard is Courier).
You can print in different ways:
For archiv/PDF: Install the unicode truetype font with chinese characters for the pdf-converter.
For Frontend: Use the Frontendprinter SAPWIN or SAPWIN*CF (Cascading Font) to send it to the gui (note: SAPLPD does not support it, use the newer technology.....)
Backend printing: POSTSCRIPT is not yet implemented :-((
PLease note: What you see in spool / print preview is a simulation of the possible print, but backend print is not frontend preview!!!!

    Christian

  • Printing of chinese characters in ecc6 unicode system

    Hi,
We are having problem printing out debit memo that have chinese characters. In the preview, the chinese characters are displayed properly.
but when it's printed out, the chinese characters are displayed as "###". we are using device type "SAPWIN: Rel.4.x/SAPIpd 4.09+".
When we use device type "CNSAPWIN", the chinese characters are displayed as "ÂíÀ´Î÷ÑÇ".
Appreciate if anyone can tell me how to solve this problem.

    Hi,
It is a printer issue. The printer needs to be configured to support the Chinese chanracter set.
Normally when we are able to view the chinese characters properly in the print preview but not properly displayed on the output it is surely a printer problem.
This kind of problem we faced many times.
    Thanks

  • Issue Regarding Chinese characters In Smart Form Print preview..

    Hi All,
I am working on a smart form development for chinese users. The requirement is the user will login using English & when the delivery will be issued for output, a check will be done on the country of user. If that comes as china then the international version (C) maintained for that customer will come as output.
Now the problem is even if I login using EN or ZH the below issue I am facing always.
In the database I can view the details in chinese properly by logging in as ZH. During debugging also i checked the data from table ADRC & MAKT is coming in chinese properly. But when i gave the values to be output in SmartForm, it is showing the characters like how it will look if I login using EN & view the table contents.
When i view the data by changing character set as Simplified Chinese then in table i can see chinese texts properly. But when the same data goes to print preview it shows the chinese characters like as it would appear when character set is Unicode or West European..
    Please help..
    Thanks in advance.

    Dear,
print preview and physical printout are two different things.
    PrintPreview:
The data stream will be sent to the frontend and rendered with windows-fonts etc (for backend prints a simulation).
    Printout:
Frontend: You need a printer, that maps the character, you have to use SAPWIN or SAPWINCF when using cascading fonts. The rendering will be done in the windows spooler.
Backend: Your printer needs also a mapping (look like something with UTF8). Also the printer needs the fonts installed because the rendering will be done in the printer!
If you use the pdf-printer in SAP, you need to upload all necessary fonts (TTF) for the pdf-composer. Also you need a unicode pdf printer for that.

  • Smartform preview / print of chinese characters

    Hello all
    I am facing this issue:
After implementing SAP Note 852926, the Smartform preview / printing works fine with Chinese characters in DEV system.
The Unit test were OK and then the SAP Note has been transported to our TEST env, but the chinese characters are not previewed and printed correctly there.
I see characters as "»ÆêÍ" instead of "黄晖"
I can not find any difference in settings / fonts of the two systems. What am I missing?
    Anybody can give a hint?
    Thanks
    Imrich

    Hello Imrich,
Do you use the same device type to print in th test system?
To print Chinese characters from SAP, there are some rules:
    1. The form must have Chinese language key 'ZH' or the Chinese texts must be included as standard texts with the language key 'ZH'.
    2. The correct Chinese fonts(e.g. CNHEI or CNSONG) must be used for the Chinese texts in the form.
    3. The form must be processed with a device type that supports the simplified Chinese language.(eg:device type CNSAPWIN).
Another possibility if you have a Unicode system is tp print via desvice type SWINCF. Here the language of the form doesn't matter.

    Aidan
