Chinese text in Indesign CS3

Hi,
I have a computer (WXPSP3 EN) with Adobe Creative Suite CS3 (incl. InDesign) installed. Now the user has a problem with Chinese text, he never used before. He got a Word file with the translation English => Chinese and copied the text from Word to InDesing :-)
The text is not displayed. It seems that there is a font missing, is this possible? Do I need a special InDesign font for Chinese text? If yes, which one? A link would be helpful. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm using chinese text, too, for the chinese version of the german/english user guides I'm creating.
For me it never was a problem. You probably need to know this:
1. In general, you need to install support for CJK (chinese, japanese, korean) language on Windows
    (Word may display the text without the support installed because it can embed fonts into .doc files)
2. If you then copy text from Word to Indesign, it should be displayed correctly, whereas Indesign manages a list of substitution fonts for this situation
If 2. does not work, you could try to replace the font in Word first by, for example, SimSun (of the chinese Windows fonts). Of course only if simplified chinese is used.
Then copy and paste should. At least it does for me in CS2 and CS4.

  • How do I copy and paste Chinese text into InDesign CC?

    I am having difficulty copying and pasting pre-translated Chinese text into InDesign.
    Many of the characters are coming up as boxes in the majority of Chinese fonts offered in CC.
    马修斯旅游大巴租赁公司

    translates as
    Font used above is Apple LiSung
    I have tried to import via Apple Text Edit and format stripped the text.

    That's happening because you have Simplified Chinese text, and are attempting to use a Traditional Chinese font.
    Ellis suggests a well-made Adobe font with Trad support. If you pull down your font dropdown and scroll towards the end, you'll find fonts split into categories according to language support. The one with Apple LiSung is the Simplified category, and the one with Adobe Fangsong is the Trad category. Pick any font from that category - but know that the style of font you pick in Chinese means as much as the style of font you pick in English, and if you don't know what the conventions are, you may well choose one not entirely suited to your audience. (One of my translators likened the Chinese font choices of monolingual Anglo designers to "seeing the body text of my How To Use Your Health Care Benefits brochure laid out in Rosewood.")

  • Importing Chinese Text into InDesign

    I am working on a newsletter project and will need to input translated text in Mandrine Chinese in an InDesign file? My questions are:
    1) How do I input the text into InDesign? Is it as simple as cut and paste or do I need to change some settings on my Mac first to recognize the Chinese characters?
    2) Is there a specific kind of document file the text needs to be in first? i.e. .doc file or something else

    Adobe InDesign what version?
    Version 3 introduced improved CJK, including inline input. It should work if you do as you would do in any transfer of plain text: copy from your originating application e.g. Apple Pages, clean (scrub, strip) the formatting by copying into a plain text editor and choosing Plain Text e.g. in Apple TextEdit, copy into the formatting application e.g. Adobe InDesign.
    I reviewed Adobe InDesign 1.5 and was beta tester for Adobe InDesign 2 and 3.

  • TextModel Replace Text Crashing InDesign CS3

    Hi,
    i'm using textModel->Replace(range.Start(& ml), result.Length(), &result) to replace text.
    it works great with short text but when there's alot of text, inDesign crashes..
    have also tried with Delete() then Insert() but that crashes also..
    does anyone know how to fix this?
    thanks!

    Read the programming guide about persistence and commands.
    In general you should not invoke methods yourself that smell like they could change the document (or book or library or preference).

  • Overlining text in InDesign CS3

    Does anyone know if there's a way to both underline and overline text?
    I'm formatting a book for someone and in the text (not page numbers), they use roman numerals with "th" or "nd" after them. Ex: Xth, IInd I'd like to overline and underline just the X or II part so it could stand out.
    Any help anyone can give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

    Dominic,
    Thank you so very much!!! That works fine.
    (I had searched online & used INDD's help but couldn't find the answer, and I'm new to using INDD.)

  • Can't paste text anymore from Acrobat Pro to Indesign CS3

    Since upgrading to Acrobat Pro, I can't copy and paste text into Indesign CS3 or 4 which is included in pdfs as NOTES. I can, however, copy and paste the regular content in the Acrobat document. After I copy the text from the notes, I go to paste it into Indesign and all I get is a blinking cursor. I can copy and paste from Acrobat 7. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    I've seen no solutions to this issue thus far. I will post my solutions to this issue here and on the other thread I found with the same problem.
    Here's how I resolved the issue. In InDesign under Preferences go to:
    Clipboard Handling>"When Pasting Text and Tables from Other Applications"/Paste: (and choose the "all information" option)
    If you have the "Text Only" option selected, this might be the issue. After checking "All Information" my issue was resolved.

  • Indesign CS3 - copy paste and export problem

    When I try to copy text in Indesign CS3 and paste it in Word 2007 - or even in notepad - nothing happens. Pasting works fine when I stay in Indesign, but not when I try to paste it in another application.
    So I tried to export text to RTF (selecting text, export to rtf, give a name als save), but no file was created.
    Pasting text from another app. into Indesign just works fine.
    Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug?
    Thanks for any advise.
    (Windows Vista, Dell 9200, 4 MB memory)
    L.L.

    I solve this problem in windows XP using the Phaedra's first optimistic tip and worked fine to me.
    When I tested the IDcs3 in another profile it was clear that the problem is not in the program, but in permissions or another detail in the user config.
    To simplifly my life, I create a new user account "MIGUEL2" in Windows as admin powers. With this new account I "reboot" my oldest ("MIGUEL") account to user mode. Restarted windows and, with "MIGUEL2" I reset the privileges to "MIGUEL" to admin user.
    Now I can export txt and rtf files from IDcs3. ;)
    You can skip the last step and work only with the new account or just work as user, not admin...
    Really weird. Why this happened? I don't know... but I'm happy that was too simple to solve...
    Best wishes

  • Italics and boldface not preserved in cut-and-paste from InDesign CS3

    This is using Mac InDesign CS3 5.0.1 and Mac Dreamweaver CS3
    9.0.
    When cuting-and-pasting text from InDesign CS3 to Dreamweaver
    CS3, basic text formatting such as italics and boldface are not
    preserved for me. When I select Edit, Paste Special in Dreamweaver,
    the "Text with structure plus basic formatting (bold, italic)" is
    not selectable when the clipboard holds InDesign-origin text.
    If I paste the same InDesign text into Word, the formatting
    is preserved and if I then cut-and-paste from Word into
    Dreamweaver, boldface and italics are preserved. But I don't want
    to cut-and-paste everything twice!
    Do others experience this too?
    -Tim Miller Dyck

    Apparently it is an issue with Leopard (and Illustrator)
    Workarounds:
    1) Export from InDesign as eps or PDF, or
    2) Copy paste into Photoshop as a Smartobject, and then double click the layer to edit smart object (it will open in Illustrator)
    I know, it's a pain.

  • Text Wrap options not showing in InDesign CS3

    Using InDesign CS3 on a Mac 10.4.  I've had this problem for a couple of months now and it's getting past the point of annoying.  When I open my text wrap options pallete it's blank even when I expand options.  I can see the text wrap icons in my header panel, but I no longer have options to change the right/left/top/bottom margins.  Just a general "add wrap" and "remove wrap".  Is there any way I can get my pallete back?  I've tried defaulting my tools, but still it does not show up.  I don't know what to do to get it back.

    Did you try resetting preferences? While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files. If you don't get the message about deleting preferences, you weren't fast enough.

  • Indesign CS3 : Inset spacing preview in text box not there anymore.

    Hi!
    In Indesign CS2, I could see a "preview" of the inset spacing of my text boxes in "Preview Mode (W)".
    In Indesign CS3, I can't see it anymore unless I move my text boxes (the preview of the inset spacing of my text boxes shows only when I move the boxes).
    This is bad, because I can't see really fast which boxes have inset spacing and which ones don't.
    Please help me!
    Thanks,
    Chris.

    Yes.
    Normal Mode hides all of those things. But Preview Mode shows all of those things (unless otherwise selected in the "View" menu).
    I need to see the inset spacing of my text boxes in Preview Mode without having to move them.
    Here is an image of my text box in Preview Mode (guides, invisible characters, etc. are visible, but not the inset spacing): http://www.chris.lafacade.com/share/01.jpg
    Here is an image of my text box in Preview Mode while I move my box. As you can see, the inset spacing shows: http://www.chris.lafacade.com/share/02.jpg
    I need the inset spacing to show all the time in Preview Mode.
    Thanks!
    Chris.

  • Exporting Text as InDesign Tagged Text in CS3

    Hello All,
    I am facing a problem exporting the Text from InDesign Document as InDesign Tagged Text. It use to work properly in CS2. But in CS3 the IExportProvider interface CanExportThisFormat() always returns false for the format name "Indesign Tagged Text".
    InterfacePtr<IPMStream>filetream(StreamUtil::CreateFileStreamWriteLazy(sysfile));
    iiExportProvider->ExportToStream(filetream, doc, iselMgr, formatNameOfInterest, kSuppressUI);
    If the CanExportThisFormat() function is ignored and directly tried to export with the above ExportToStream() function it still fails to export into stream.
    Has the way to export the InDesign Tagged Text been changed in CS3.
    Can any one whos tried this please help as its urgent.
    Thank you in advance.
    Regards
    Farzana.

    Hi Vikas
    I export files from Photoshop as png's at 72 dpi.
    Here is our current holding page.  http://www.iheartmylife.co.uk/ All the text on this page has been loaded in as png's from Photoshop along with the image. As you can see none of it is as sharp as it could be.
    Many thanks for your assistance.

  • Indesign CS3 text frame parameters and export PDF

    could use some help with the following:
    I need to edit and export a large number (7000) Indesign documents (one page)
    1. check for locked text frames and unlock
    2. group all text frames
    3. set grouped text frames at x=8 millimeters, y 10 milimeters
    4. export the documents to PDF in a subfolder called "Out"
    5. save and close the documents in the same subfolder as an Indesign CS3 document (orig is CS2)
    This is what I've been trying soo far:
    Now only checking one text frame - should be all text frames
    "close document 1 saving yes" doesn't work because the originals are from CS2
    I get a PDF called "Adobe Indesign SC3"
    set processFolder to choose folder with prompt "Choose a folder that contains Innd Docs to process"
    tell application "Finder"
    if not (exists folder "OUT" of processFolder) then
    make new folder at processFolder with properties {name:"OUT"}
    end if
    set the destination_folder to folder "OUT" of processFolder as alias
    end tell
    tell application "Finder"
    try
    set listFiles to (files of contents of processFolder) as alias list
    on error
    set listFiles to (files of contents of processFolder) as alias as list
    end try
    repeat with thisFile in listFiles
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
    with timeout of 120 seconds
    activate
    set properties of view preferences to {horizontal measurement units:millimeters, vertical measurement units:millimeters, ruler origin:page origin}
    open thisFile
    set myDoc to document 1
    set docName to name
    tell myDoc
    set transform reference point of layout window 1 to top left anchor
    set myBox to text frame 1 of page 1
    set properties of myBox to {locked:false}
    move myBox to {8, 10}
    end tell
    export document 1 format PDF type to (destination_folder as string) & docName & ".pdf" using PDF export preset "[Drukwerkkwaliteit]" without showing options
    close document 1 saving yes
    tell application "Finder" to move thisFile to destination_folder with replacing
    end timeout
    end tell
    end repeat
    end tell
    end
    end
    Any help is greatly appreciated - Doing this manually is a lot of work!!!!!
    Peter

    You're asking for the name of the application, not the document -- you need<br />to do it after your "tell myDoc".<br /><br />You could also get the name from the alias you open, rather than the open<br />document, something like:<br /><br />repeat with thisFile in listFiles<br />set oldDelims to AppleScript's text item delimiters<br />set AppleScript's text item delimiters to {":"}<br />set docName to text item -1 of (thisFile as Unicode text)<br />set AppleScript's text item delimiters to oldDelims<br /><br />You should also move your "set properties of view preferences" line to after<br />your "tell myDoc".<br /><br />-- <br />Shane Stanley <[email protected]>

  • Indesign CS3-JS - Problem in reading text from a text file

    Can anyone help me...
    I have an problem with reading text from an txt file. By "readln" methot I can read only the first line of the text, is there any method to read the consecutive lines from the text file.
    Currently I am using Indesign CS3 with Java Script (for PC).
    My Java Script is as follows........
    var myNewLinksFile = myFindFile("/Links/NewLinks.txt")
    var myNewLinks = File(myNewLinksFile);
    var a = myNewLinks.open("r", undefined, undefined);
    myLine = myNewLinks.readln();
    alert(myLine);
    function myFindFile(myFilePath){
    var myScriptFile = myGetScriptPath();
    var myScriptFile = File(myScriptFile);
    var myScriptFolder = myScriptFile.path;
    myFilePath = myScriptFolder + myFilePath;
    if(File(myFilePath).exists == false){
    //Display a dialog.
    myFilePath = File.openDialog("Choose the file containing your find/change list");
    return myFilePath;
    function myGetScriptPath(){
    try{
    myFile = app.activeScript;
    catch(myError){
    myFile = myError.fileName;
    return myFile;
    Thanks,
    Bharath Raja G

    Hi Bharath Raja G,
    If you want to use readln, you'll have to iterate. I don't see a for loop in your example, so you're not iterating. To see how it works, take a closer look at FindChangeByList.jsx--you'll see that that script iterates to read the text file line by line (until it reaches the end of the file).
    Thanks,
    Ole

  • Importing and flowing multiple text docs into InDesign CS3

    I have multiple plain text files where each runs several pages long that I want to import into one document in ID CS3. I want to import them and have them flow in a single threaded text frame one after another over multiple pages. With a single multi-page text doc all I have to do is select Place and hold down the shift key and InDesign will add the necessary pages and flow the copy until the end of the doc. However, if I shift select the docs and try import them into a text frame by holding down the shift key, it will just flow the first doc in the group with no indication of overset text. I have tried placing multiple text docs holding down the shift and command key and that brings in all my docs on the first page but in separate text boxes with overset text for each doc. Is there a way to do this in InDesign or perhaps a plugin that can do this?
    Thanks
    Randy

    I tried to find this. It was posted 4/21/08 by Peter Kahrel (I can tell, because I can see my side of the discussion in my Sent folder) in response to a post I made entitled "Multiple Files". Maybe I'm not searching the forum archives properly, or maybe this was during the time last year when Adobe was trying (and failing) to update the forums. In any case, I'm sure at this point that Peter posted this for public consumption, so I don't think he's going to mind if I post it again:

    Copy and paste everything between the hyphen lines (not including the hyphen lines) into a text editor and save with a .js extension and put it in your scripts folder. Should be something like:
    D:\Program Files\Adobe\InDesign CS3\Adobe InDesign CS3\Scripts\Scripts Panel
    After alphabetizing your files and putting them in their own folder, copy the path and run the script. It will make a new folder and place all your files in one continuous story. I don't know how it will work with .txt files.

  • InDesign CS3 crashes when applying styles to pasted text with formatting.

    Running InDesign CS3, v. 5.0.2 on Windows XP, SP2
    InDesign is crashing whenever I do the following:
    1. Paste or place text from Microsoft Word -- with existing formatting preserved.
    2. Apply any character or paragraph style to that text.
    This happens 100% of the time when I try to recreate the error. It happens on more than one computer. It never used to happen in IDCS2. It's not a missing font issue.
    I've tried recreating the InDesign preference files, but it didn't work. (See help file at http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb400616&sliceId=1)
    Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated! This is slowing down my work a ton, and manually adding things like underline is killing me. If it persists, I'll have to roll back to CS2. :(

    We had exactly the same issue - but it only seemed to happen when a "Hyperlink" character style came in with the pasted text. In fact, the crash only happened when we tried to apply a paragraph style to a paragraph that had a hyperlink in it.
    Our solution: before we try to do anything else, we delete the "Hyperlink" character style. I can't guarantee that this will solve your issue, but it has worked for us (so far!) in those rare cases when we cut & paste Word text.
    We have never had this issue when we import ("Place") the Word file - that's generally a better workflow anyway.
