Where did you buy Adobe Reader?  Adobe Reader can be downloaded for free from http://get.adobe.com/reader/
As Michael already explained, the free Adobe Reader cannot convert anything; it is just a reader.

  • Strange-shaped fonts and unreadable characters in the PDF file

    Hello,
A colleague of mine printed out a PDF file that I generated. Some of the fonts in the printed PDF file appear out-of-shape (slightly squiggly but still readable). These fonts are in plain body text and some of the heading styles. In addition, unreadable characters appear for fonts in the PDF where a keyboard input character format was specified in the source (in Framemaker a different character format can be specified for individual words within a paragraph format).
He printed this PDF file a total of eight times. For the first five times there were no issues, but in the last three times the problems occured.
He printed the files from the same printer and some of the printing was with the PCL profile, while others were with the PS profile.
My colleague viewed the files using Adobe Reader 8 running on Windows XP.
My PC is also Windows XP. The document source is FrameMaker 7.2. When generating the file, I used Acrobat Distiller 8.0. It is compatible with Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.0). The Acrobat Reader I have on my PC is Acrobat 8.0.
    Thanks,
    Ken

I'm using acrobat 8.1.0 and I believe I have the same problem as Ken.
However, I have a question. If the fonts simply weren't installed, wouldn't they also appear as weird characters when looking at a soft copy in acrobat? Why would the problem only occur when printing?

  • Why is the pdf files will not download.

When we try to download a file the only PDF related program to open the file just extracts then gives a error sign. I am able to open current PDF file stored.

      A little grammatical error     .
When I try to download a file, the box ask what do I want to open it with.
I selected the adobe type icon.  It's a zip program or something, it
will unzip then gives a error message. I will have to do it to get the
    error message....        :D

  • Reader will not read my pdf files. after an automatic update the pdf files are not accessable.

adobe automatic update to XI caused the reader of my pdf files to stop working. The reader tries to open -- the adobe reader window opens for a few seconds, nothing in the window is activated -- then the window automatically closes.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled previous versions that used to work but the reader 9 and X now do the same thing. open, unactivated window after a few seconds the program then shuts down.
I cannot open and read any pdf file on this computer.
There are no error messages and everything seems normal. The program does not work properly.
I have ran the windows diagnostic tools to no avail.
    This computer operates windows 7

See if you can open the EULA.exe file in the folder that contains the install of Reader or Acrobat.

  • I am trying to read a document from a bank and the pdf file will not open for me to read it.

I have downloaded and installed acrobat reader xl and I still can not read pdfs for certain places why is this?  I am using google chrome as my default browser.  I went to the same banking website using explorer and the pdf opened without a hitch.  Why is this?

Because Chrome uses its own PDF viewer; you should use the Adobe Reader plugin on Chrome to view online PDF docs correctly.

  • PDF file will not print out Special Characters

I am currently a technician for a college and, and the customer that I am attending currently has the following Problem:
I am using Adobe PRO 9 to convert my Word files to pdfs for [a New York Printing Company].... The Greek letters used in Word are seen in Word, are seen in PDF, but do not come out in ...[the New York Printing Companies'] printing.
What could be the stubling block for the NY printing company to not be able to print out the Special Characters in the PDF files? I clearly cannot go to the company myself and tell them to change their printer settings or something like that.

Thank you, I have checked the font and I see all the fonts I need already installed. I am not sure if this will solve the problem, and there is a chance that the Adobe Acrobat settings on my customers PC need to be adjusted like you said.
At least I can start looking somewhere .

  • When I drag pdf files into iBooks Author, the background in the pdf file changes into the colour of my book (brown/beige)?

    Hi,
when I drag a pdf file (when working in Preview) into iBooks Author, the background colour in the pdf file changes into the background colour of the book.
This happens not consistently, sometimes the background of the pdf file does not change (and stays white), sometimes it's like the text in the pdf file is 'lifted' of the file, and put on the page in iBooks Author (with a brown/beige background).
All the pdf files are scanned pdf's, nothing comes out of Pages, Word, Excel,...
    Anybody?
    Thanks a lot!
    Wouter

I have the same question (posted here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/25644741#25644741).
I believe this is because the PDFs have transparent backgrounds. As far as I can tell, the only way to fix it is to export the PDF as another file, such as an image file. Or perhaps convert it to Word and import it that way.

  • Pdf files will not open

    Hi,
I have viewed through this forum and did not find a problem with similar symptoms.
I upgraded from Adobe Reader 8 to Reader 9 and then the .pdf files will not open.
    Actions and Observations/Symptoms:
    1)  After I clicked onto the pdf document icon - nothing happens.
    2)  I right click onto the pdf icon and chose "open with Adobe 9" and get the same response.  Nothing happens.
    3)  I go to the the start menu - select Adobe Reader 9 - and the program does not even open.
    =======
I have since removed Reader 9 and re-installed Reader 8.  I tried the above actions and got the same behaviour.  Not a whole lot happens.  It seems like something is broken after the first initial upgrade.
In fact - I went to the folder:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader  and
tried to open Reader by double clicking onto "AcroRd32.exe" and there was no response.
I'm completely lost!  Can anyone share a fix to my problem?
    Thanks,
    Mike
Some hardware & OS background info:  Toshiba Laptop - 1.58 Ghz, 3GB RAM - M/S Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3

I can't explain the cause to the problem - but I found two "work-arounds" to get me running again.
    Workaround #1:
I found another program (and there are many) on the web that will also read .pdf files.  I downloaded  "Foxit Reader" , installed it and it works.  I can now view my pdf docs!
However - I got so used to Adobe Reader - I really wanted to get Reader working again.
    Workaround #2:
    I re-installed Adobe Reader 8.
Instead of running the usual Adobe installation script that I got from the web, I copied (from another PC's C-drive)  the "Reader 8.0" folder and all its contents into my current C- drive directory structure  C:\Program Files\Adobe\.
I re-booted the PC and can now open my pdf files using Reader 8.
It seems to work - but I don't know what the effects of this installation method will have in the future - or the interaction it will have with other programs.  I guess when I need to remove the program in the future  - I'll have to do it manually, since it doesn't even register in the "Add or Remove Programs" under Control Panel.
    ===============
Hope this helps out anyone else with similar symptoms.
In the original problem, it's unfortunate that there were no error messages whatsoever when I tried opening the pdf files.  It was like as if Reader was not even activated or even loaded on my PC.  I'll bug me for a while - but at least I got Reader working again (for now....)!

  • Content Organizer bug - PDF files does not get routed correctly if autodeclaration is on and library level default values are set

It looks like whenever one specifies Column default values at a library level then the content organizer routing goes a bit awry SPECIFICALLY FOR NON OFFICE FILES [e.g. PDF] . Below are the observations and issues
    1. Column level default value set on a record library with auto declaration of records turned on.  The content organizer routes the document to the library but also keeps a copy of the document in the drop off library. It does not remove it from the drop
off library. The instant we clear the default value settings at the library level of the target library the content organizer works as expected again.
    2. If default value settings are specified on a column in the target library then the PDF file gets routed to the document library but all the metadata is blanked out. The copy of the file that remains in the drop off library has all the correct metadata but
the target library has blanked out metadata.
Are the 2 observations described above by design or are they bugs? If so is there any documentation that is available that proves this because this does not make logical sense and proving this to a client in the absence of any documentation is a challenge.
The problem goes away if we shift the default value to the site columns directly at the site collection level. It's just the library level defaults that the pdf files do not seem to agree with

    Hi Lisa,
Thanks for responding. This can be replicated in any environment but is only replicable for a specific combination of content organizer settings . The combination of settings I am referring to can be seen in the screenshot below. If you turn off redirect
users to the drop off library for direct uploads to libraries and if you turn on sharepoint versioning then you should be able to replicate the issue. Also we are using managed metadata site columns. I simplified this use case to a custom content content type
with just 2 custom managed metadata columns and can still replicate the issue in several environments. Also note the issue does not occur if the default values are set at the site or site collection level. It only occurs if you set the column value default
at a library level.  I was able to replicate this on a completely vanilla Enterprise records site collection freshly created just to test this.  Also note that the issue is not that the file does not reach the destination library. The issue is the
document does not get removed from the drop off library after it is transfered to the destination library which technically should have gotten removed.

  • Export pdf and save as using digits.pdf eliminating all the text characters from the source file.

    Hi all,
Usually when we export pdf from indesign or whatever software,,, the pdf file naming will be as per source file...
eg.,  123456_dfdfjljf_ULCC.indd will be exported and saved as 123456_dfdfjljf_ULCC.pdf.
my request is "the pdf should be saved as 12345.pdf avoiding all the characters following first digits.
hint: first digists may be more or less than 4 digits....
My request is any number of digits should be saved as 23232.......pdf and avoding the following characters.
please help me... i have hell lot of pdf to export from indesign.......
    thanks
    bobylon.

There is no "whatever" here - when you export from InDesign or other software each piece of software makes its own naming decisions. It isn't an Acrobat or JavaScript thing at all.

    Hi Ajith !!
    Please refer this link :
    http://www.sapdevelopment.co.uk/reporting/rep_spooltopdf.htm
Here a spool output is converted into PDF and then sent as an email.
I think instead of using FM to change the width, try the logic mentioned in the link.
Also instead of FM CONVERT_TO_OTF use :
    1. CONVERT_OTFSPOOLJOB_2_PDF
I hope this should solve the problem.
I had referred the same program from the link and it worked absolutely fine. Also check the adobe acrobat version, i guess old version doesnt support SAP, though not very sure.
    Best regards,
    Prashant

  • Problem to visualize characters in a pdf file

    Hello ,
i'm from italy i have a problem with Adobe Reader X.
I don't visualize some characters in a pdf file. On the arrow in the page there are numebrs and letter , actually there is a grey line .In the first page there is this phrase:
If grey lines appear instead of words, please do the following. In Acrobat Reader
go to --> File --> Preferences --> General. Make sure "Use Greek Text Below ____ Pixels" is deselected.
In Reader there isn't this option........
With another type of pdf reader i visualize correctly my pdf file.

You need Adobe Acrobat to do it after it's a PDF file.  If you are in the parent application then you do that operation in the parent application before creating a PDF file from the document.

  • The PDF file has illegal entries in bfchar block in ToUnicode CMap (03042008)

While creating the pdf document in Adode indesign CS3 i get the pdf file has as a illegal entries in bfchar block in ToUnicode CMap
Tell me Why this pdf has a illegal entries
    How to resolve this problem

I assume you mean a CID font, not a CMAP font – since there isn't such a type of font.
To your issue, you need to decode the string first as a series of single byte characters and then as double byte.  This is true for all strings in PDF.
