"Chirping" Noise and Sleep problem

My 1st gen IMac G5 has been making some "chirping noises"for the last six months. They seem to be coming from the lower left quadrant of the monitor. They really get busy when the computer is starting up from being shut down. I am hoping this isn't a hard drive issue, as I have already had one replaced after a failure.
I also have a problem with putting the computer to sleep. I usually have to sleep it twice for it to stay asleep. Then when I check it again the next day, sometimes it is awake. It wakes up to my login screen and I have no screen saver for that one.
I would appreciate any input regarding these issues.
Thanks, Bob Bullock

To Apple Discussions!
I have no idea what could be causing the "chirping" sound as you are starting up from a shutdown unless there is a cricket inside your computer that doesn't like cold bootups.
Since you mentioned a previous HD issue, see if you qualify for the iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues
**WARNING: DUE TO SECURITY REASONS, PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR COMPUTER'S SERIAL NUMBER ON THESE MESSAGE BOARDS.**
Regarding your sleep issue, see Knowledge Base Article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341 How to reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) or Power Mac G5 (Late 2005)
Good luck!

  • Bluetooth Not Available and Sleep Problem

Please could somebody offer some suggestions for my problem.
I have a similar problem to some posts on this forum. My bluetooth status becomes "not available" after differing amounts of time.
I do not think it is linked with USB devices because it has happened without connecting devices. When this has happened and I close the lid, it turns off the screen but the white on the front stays solid (does not flash). After that, I cannot wake my macbook and have to hold the power to reset.
When it has restarted the bluetooth and sleep work perfectly.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Satellite L505D-S5965 got shutdown, hibernate and sleep problem after Windows 7 upgrade

I bought my Satellite L505D-S5965 last August. Everything worked fine on Vista. Last month I upgraded it to Windows 7 (Home premium, build 7600), then it started having problem to shutdown, hibernate and sleep. Half of the time, it will shutdown, hibernate or sleep just fine, however, the other half of the time it just never turns off.
For shutdown, it will go to the shutdown screen for 10 minutes until the a blue screen comes up, telling something about windows experience a crash and dumping memory, then it restarts itself.
For hibernation and sleep, it will go to the normal black screen but the hard disk light never turns off (i.e. the hardisk would keep running forever).
It will be a big help if someone can help me with that, I just don't want to keep doing the "hard turn off".

Hey thats great posting and detailed, thank you! :)
Im wondering how you found it out.
But I want to add something: Before you do or change something in Windows registry, make a backup of it. In worst case you restore the old Windows registry. Just to be sure ;)

  • G700 Windows 8.1 Fastboot and sleep problem

    Hello!
I have problem with Windows 8.1 and Lenovo G700:
    1) Fastboot option not working properly...
    2) System can't  go sleep
I was looking for solution for this problems and found.... I have to disable all network interfaces in G700
(LAN and WLAN with Bluetooth) then fastboot and sleep options working fine.
I have a question about compatibility G700 and Windows 8.1?

I can't help with the SecureBoot issue. I have the same problem with my videocard not being SecureBoot compatible (A GTX 670). The sleep issue though, is it an issue with like... you can only hibernate, but you can't sleep? Windows 8 didn't come with that for me, but I found a work around.
Open a command prompt with administrator privilege and type: powercfg /hibernate off
This should change the hibernate to sleep.
If you want an icon for it just make a batch file: rundll32 powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState (0,1,0)
And if you need a timer on it (I use this pretty often myself) use this: powershell sleep <seconds> | rundll32 powrprof.dll SetSuspendState (0,1,0)
And if you're curious about the (0,1,0) thing. It's all boolean, so 1 or 0. (A,B,C), A: Hibernate, B: Critical (in XP/2003 it forces the sleep, but in newer versions it asks for permission to suspend), C: Disable wake event (Wake on LAN would be disabled if this were 1, for example).

  • 10.5.2 Parallels and Sleep Problem

After installing 10.5.2, I cannot access the internet using Parallels and the restart from sleep problem has come back. I did a full backup just before upgrading to 10.5.2 and when I boot up from the backup done just before I updated, things work ok, so it really looks like it has something to do with 10.5.2. Comments or Suggestions?

Check your network preference pane: do both the "Parallels Host-Guest" and "Parallels NAT" config items have real IP addresses? (They'll probably be in the 10.x.x.x range if so.) Or do they have self-assigned 169.x.x.x addresses?
If the latter, that's your problem: nothing to do with 10.5.2, but rather a bug seemingly introduced in build 5584 of Parallels Desktop. People are discussing this and other problems at length in the Parallels forum at:

  • Download, battery, and sleep problems on macbook pro with retina display after upgrading to Mountain lion

After waiting a few days to download OS X Mountain lion, I finally installed it on my new MacBook with retina display a couple days ago. I love the interface and all the new features, but I've noticed some problems I really need to resolve. I'm constantly downloading large files and I noticed thhis change:
Before, on Lion, I could download files from Safari or the Internet and the computer would sleep whenever it was set to on energy preferences and the download would resume. This would let the computer conserve energy so the download could progress further when on battery. Now, I noticed that my computer never goes to sleep! Its set to have the display sleep in 5 minutes and the computer in 15 on both battery and when plugged in, but it never does either. I don't know if it has to do with the fact that power nap is on even when using battery. So now the Mac is constantly on when downloading something and instead of downloading a one gigabyte file that would take up 15% of my battery, it takes up 60% since it never sleeps. When I tried downloading something and then manually putting the computer to sleep, the download was interrupted and it said Wi-Fi connection lost so I have to start the download over again.
That's basically all three problems in one situation. I even put the brightness all the way on low so the screen is black when downloading, but it still uses up much more battery than before. Can someone help find a solution?

Did you try turning off power nap?

  • Heat and sleep problem with my new Macbook Pro

Basically I noticed with my new MBP the computer can become very hot and the fan gets very loud after about ~2 hours of working in Maya.. which I guess might be reasonable.
However, my main concern is, even when I close the lid of the MBP, the heat seems to stay (I just closed it for about 30 minutes, and it's still as hot as it was before I closed it).
I'm working on High Performance.. maybe my macbook isn't sleeping when I close it?
I have noticed (I THINK) that the white apple on the outside glows sometimes randomly even when I have the lid closed, but I'm not completely sure.
    Anyone else have this problem?

Hi yes I've had/got the same problem. Received my new MacBook Pro only last week and this has happened twice. The machine gets so hot I can't even touch the battery area!!!! It only seems to happen with the power connected and when the lid is closed. Fortunately the Mac was on my wooden desk or it might have melted plastic!
The Mac cooled down after unplugging from power supply, but wow it was hot....and noisy!
The only way to get the Mac back was to either press the power/off until it shut down, or take the battery out - after it cooled down.
Reported the problem to Mac Support immediately, but no response.
THIS IS DANGEROUS!!! Be careful, I don't know what would happen if it was left overnight for example - could easily cause a FIRE!!!!!

  • Kernel task 300% CPU and sleep problem

    MacBook Air 13-inch, Early 2014, ПО  OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)
The system seems overloaded, big delays on keyboard typing. Activity Monitor shows kernel_task consume 300-400% of CPU, but otherwise system does not look as overloaded - laptop is not hot
    and fan silent.
Also there is problems with system wakeup. It is impossible to wakeup system after closing the lid for more then 20 seconds, it turns off.
I think you have to add battery info.

In safe mode the problem does not go away. Actual overheating the computer does not have, it is cold. The problem is with the power on and without. All programs are not included in the basic package, I removed. I also tried to reinstall the OS with the protection of personal data. The problem exist. The problem may be due to high humidity? I live in Sri Lanka. And there is a problem with sleep mode.

  • What is this noise, and battery problem on Iphone 4S

There was a battery problem on Iphone 4s so i was worried to buy it, but once I heard that Apple published new ios 5.0.1, I went down to the Apple store near to my house, and I bought Iphone 4S. First time meet with Iphone 4S great Siri, and more faster processer, I liked it, but after I used for 1 week I found many problems, there was battery problem still, and even there was noise problem, expeciallly the noise problem is annoying because when I phone call to my friend or home I can hear it very clealy...
    please fix it apple

Reset, will reset the battery meter is this is the problem. To Reset, hold both the Home and Power buttons until the iPhone restarts itself, ignore the "slide to power off", let the iPhone restart itself. Usually takes about 10 seconds of holding both buttons. If not better, try tap Settings App > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. The set up your iPhone again. If not better, you may need to Restore the iPhone Firmware, I would perform this with iTunes on your computer.

  • Hard Drive Noise and Ethernet Problems

Hello, it's been a long time since I've had to post anything, but I guess that's good.
Anyway I have two problems, the first involves my Ethernet, I've been trying to use it to either access my Xbox Live or FTP items with another computer, however no matter what I seem to do, the light in System Preferences remains red. It does not seem to detect cables attached to it either.
The second problem may not be a problem, but I've installed World Of Warcraft on my computer, which runs fairly well, however I have been getting a weird noise I do not normally hear. The noise does not sound like a normal noise when the computer is accessing data off the hard drive. Is this normal or could there be a problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

    Hello Paul:
You can check your HD health by opening disk utility and highlighting the HD itself (not your file). You will see something at the bottom called S.M.A.R.T. If that says anything other than "verified," you have a HD problem.
It is hard to diagnose the problem with your Ethernet device. You might run the hardware checker that came with your install DVD/CD. If you have other Ethernet devices, you could try them. Beyond that, the port itself may be bad.

  • Sudden motion and sleep problem?

    Greetings, all.
I bought a Macbook a few weeks ago. Sometimes, while I am in middle of typing a document or some other way using the computer, it will suddenly go to sleep. Hitting keys does not usually wake it up. Most of the time I have to close the lid, let it sit for a minute or two, open the lid again, and that usually brings it back. I sent it in to Apple, and, naturally, they couldn't recreate the problem.
I have tried to isolate the conditions under which this problem usually occurs, but I couldn't see any pattern. Until it occurred to me that every time I remember it happening, I was using it on my lap, which means it was constantly moving around, if only a slightly. In fact, sometimes it happens just as I move it to change sitting position.
My question is, could this in some way be related to the sudden motion dectector? If so, is there something I can do about it?
To the best of my recollection this problem has never happened while resting on a completely stable surface, like a table top. Just to test it out, I have only been using it on level surfaces the past couple of days, and it hasn't happened once. This might also explain why Apple couldn't recreate the problem in the week they had it. I assume they weren't testing it on their laps.
    Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Try restting the Power Management Unit (PMU). This is probably a small button inside the computer. Or, try Zapping PRAM (optapple+RP on startup, and listen for 3 "bongs" before releasing the keys).

  • MacBook Pro 15" and sleep problem

    Hello:
I have a new MacBook Pro 15". Lately, it does not go to sleep when in battery. It used to do so without any problems. My only guess is that after updating the MSN Messenger, something has changed and if I run MSN Messenger, even if I quit it, something stays running on the background that stops the machine from going into sleep mode.
Would this be possible or could there be another reason?

That may be the case. You can look in Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor to see what processes are running after you quit MSN.
You might also consider Adium (or aMSN if you want video) for chatting, instead of MSN Messenger.

  • P7-1534 HP pavilion Desktop PC, Shut down and sleep problem's

p7-1534 HP pavilion desktop PC, Windows 8, 64-bit, Sometimes when i shut down my PC, the PC won't shut down it will stay on and i will have to use the power button to shut down the PC, and today i put the PC to sleep and it did not wake up when i tried to wake it up i had to use the power button restart the PC. i did a memory diagnostic and found no errors.

    Hi dwellas
I understand you are having issues with shutting down the computer and not being able to wake it up.
You  might have a  application or process running in the background that is not shutting down properly. Close all tray applications that you can, make sure you close all programs first, and try again. If that works, you need to see what you have installed that may be causing this.
You can do a msconfig and turn off start up programs to see if it is still something running in the background.
Here is a url to temporarily disable all the start up programs to see if one of them is causing any issues.

You will have to follow the same steps to enable all again.

  • 2 recent issues pls advise: 'tinking' noise and Sleep is delaying

In the past month my mbp started having this 'tinking' noise, at first I thought it was the movement sensor thing, but it happens when completely still on a table and there are more 'tinks' the first 10 minutes after starting but will randomly 'tink' after that. It does not seem to be coming from any particular area on the body.
Starting about a week ago, when I want to put it in sleep mode (I press the power button then select 'sleep' from the pop-up) now suddenly it takes 1-2 minutes for it to actually switch off, when previously it was almost instant. I don't recall any updates and haven't downloaded anything lately. I did a permission repair which didn't help but have not been breve enough to try a disk repair. I'm a Mac noobie and NOT computer saavy. Thanks for any advice.

I think you left a message on my post concerning this.
When you have your macbook on, hold it up to your ear and listen underneath at the back of the computer, just below where the power button is, but underneath... and listen for the "tink"... can you hear it coming from there?
I left my macbook in at an apple store and he said it could be the drive heads "parking", so they de-activated the motion sensor, but the little tink noise still happens. I just don't think they know what it is, and i'm beginning to wonder if they even understand what the actual noise is that i'm trying to explain to them. I went into the System Preferences > Energy Saver and turned off "put the hard disk to sleep when possible" (for "battery" and "power adapter"). As I read also that maybe the "tink" is the computer waking up from sleep each time. BUT that hasn't done anything either!
SO! I don't know what we should do. I mean it's not affecting the running or the functioning of the computer, it's just a tink noise that I don't know what's causing it. It's either keep the macbook and live with it, or send it back complaining of an unexplained tinking noise that not even the apple store "specialists" know how to locate or fix.

  • Cure for iphoto and sleep problem?

If iPhoto is running, my mac will not sleep properly. true for iPhoto 4 and 5 on imac DV SE and iPhoto 5 on mac mini. Many are experiencing this. I have searched for an answer here to no avail. Is there a resolution to this problem?

Fortunately, Google Chrome crashes in exactly the same way, and the geniuses at Google have devised a solution that does not require reinstalling the entire operating system.  The same steps that they recommend also work for fixing iPhoto.
Be sure that you are logged in as a user with administrative privileges (System Preferences → Users & Groups → Current User → ☑ Allow user to administer this computer).
    Launch the Terminal application.
Inside the Terminal, run sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force
    When prompted, enter your password.
After the command completes (in about a minute), restart the computer.
