Chirping noise every 2 seconds, mute stops it!

Today I noticed that my MacBook Pro has suddenly started sounding like there's a small bird trapped inside it.
At first I thought I could hear birds outside but it's too rythmical, with a chirping sound made about every 2 seconds. It's coming from the MacBook and appears to be equally loud through each speaker.
I don't think that it's due to the fan or the drive as it's coming from the speakers AND it stops when I mute the volume.
Any ideas what this could be? I really can't afford to have my machine die on me right now and am rather worried!
Thanks for any help.
Robert

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
No idea what this is, but it might not hurt to run some diagnostic tests. You could run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test and see if anything shows up in the form of an error code.
You could also run this utility:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It will give you a comprehensive view of the physical health of your hard drive.
I wonder if the speaker is picking up a sound from the drive or the fan and magnifying it. If you mute the volume, can you still hear the sound faintly?
Good luck!

  • Empty disk drive makes beep noise every 30 seconds

My disk drive makes a beep noise every 30 seconds. There is nothing in it. It sounds like it is looking for a disk or something, but the constant noise is irritating after awhile.

call the company that repaired it.  this is abnormal behavior and they need to correct it, especially since you state it was just replaced.

My MacBook Air is making a clicking noise every 7 seconds for 2 seconds. It started today, and I have had the computer for almost a year.  It is below the power switch and annoying enough that it is hard to even work with the computer.  It sounds as if a hard drive is trying to work. No applications running.  Ideas?

If its a MBA with solid state drive then I would guess its the fan touching something ???. I think it have no other moving parts.

  • "Chirping" noise every 3-5 seconds

Starting two days ago, a strange chirping sound seems to be coming from my iMac at 3-5 second intervals. I checked the HDD diagnostics and it appears to be functioning correctly (according to DiskWarrior). I know this is a very general issue, but any suggestions as to what it may be? Is it something I should have looked at?

Azeroth, I know what you are talking about. It's a repetitive clinking/chirping sound caused by the hard drive head parking whilst idle (power saving). I didn't have it with my former MBP/Fujitsu 7200, but my new MBP (Hitachi 7200) was driving me nuts with this sound. Plus it wears the hard drive out, ironically.
There is no way to fix this through System Preferences. Unchecking "Put the hard disks to sleep when possible" has no effect, nor does pushing the slider to never sleep.
The fix is unfortunately a little long winded but it works, and I'm ecstatic. Here it is:
Hard drive behaviour must be modified at a lower level, i.e. power management.
    hdapm is the answer.
    1) Enable root user: Open Directory Utility located in Application » Utilities. You may have to unlock Directory Utility to make changes. Once it's unlocked, go to Edit » Enable Root User, and then type in a password for your root user. Now logout and there will be an option for Other user. Log in as "root" and use your root user password.
    2) Create usr/local/bin folder :
/usr/local/bin doesn't exist by default. You have to create it.
To create the folder (if it doesn't exist already) and open a Finder window:
In the terminal... (Utilities/Terminal) enter these 3 commands in succession
    sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/bin
    cd /usr/local/bin
    open .
    3) Download hdapm, a command line utility for hard drive power management, here: http://mckinlay.net.nz/hdapm/
    4) Drag and drop hdapm executable into usr/local/bin and hdam.plist into Library/LaunchDaemons (to enable hdapm to run at every startup)
Reboot. Your hard drive is now running at maximum power settings.
    FIXED! NO MORE CLINKING/CHIRPING NOISES
    Disable root user

  • HT1338 why does my imac keep making a noise every 30 seconds when I am not using it?

My iMac keeping making a sound (sort of a clicking sound) every 30 seconds when I am not using it. It is very annoying; is therre a way to stop it?

Bring it in to service, and ask them to tell you what the noise is.  Sometimes it just is the optical drive realigning itself.   It could be the sign of a dying hard drive.  Only they can tell the difference.

  • Noise every 13 seconds from the bottom-right speaker

    Dear Apple Community Members,
I recently bought an iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)  two weeks ago and I noticed last week a small noise coming from the bottom-right of the screen (every 13 seconds). As far as I know, that's also where one of the speakers is located. I tried to turn the speakers off, but that doesn't stop it. If you don't know it, you won't hear it. But once you heard it, it is getting really disturbing in a quiet environment because you will always pay attention to it.
Any idea what it could be and if I should send it back? If needed I can try to record the noises.
    Looking forward to reading you.
    Best,
    J.

  • Loud clicking/rattling noise every 5 seconds

My MacBook Air makes a loud clicking or rattling noise exactly every 5 seconds. It originates from the bottom of the MacBook, approximately somewhere behind the "P" key. The noise sounds just like a broken clicking hard drive except that I have the SOLID STATE DRIVE MacBook! I'm thinking it might be a fan issue. What is causing this noise and how do I fix it?
The noise is very loud, in the video below you can listen to it if you turn up your volume.
    http://www.tokbox.com/vm/xa9bk58b1hr4
Can I bring the MacBook Air to an Apple store, and can they fix it on the spot by swapping out the broken fan or whatever it is?

I had the exact same problem; my new MBA made the noise right out of the box. Sounded like it was snoring. Rather discouraging, this being my very first mac. BUT, I think I fixed it.
I downloaded istat, and noticed that the exhaust fan RPM was 0. So, the problem seemed to be that the fan was "stuck." And, I know this sounds awful and wrong, but I gave my machine a sharp little rap just under the power key, to the right of the delete/slash/return keys. Just a soft knock, using the section of my index finger I'd use to show a child how long an inch is. The snoring went away immediately, and the fan speed went up to roughly 2490rpm.
Seems like a stupid manufacturing glitch, which I REALLY don't feel like dealing with after dropping a few thousand on this machine. But the fix was easy enough.

  • Abnormal Noise every 20 seconds (X301)

I bought the x301 thinkpad 4 months ago. Now, I keep hearding abnormal noise originated from the righ side of keyboard.
It's low picth, 1-2 seconds long and coming out every 20 seconds. Sometimes, it's totally gone.
It sounds as the dvd reader is running for 1-2 seconds. Should I concern? i would like to bring it to the lenovo center but i need it for working on my final project.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Finally, i successfully fixed it!
I removed the dvd drive from the slot and put it back, secure a screw at the bottom of laptop.
    Now, all abnormal noise gone!

  • W520 fan plusing noise every 5 seconds

    Hi,
I have the same Problem with my new W520 (4282-W17). The fan makes irregularly (a couple of secounds, maybe 5-10 sec) a pulsing/whining noise (like spinning up and one secound later spinning down again).
    I realized the noise after updating the BIOS with a Boot-CD from 1.21 to 1.24 (8BET44WW, BIOS says it is 1.24 but Driver-Matrix shows 1.25) and performing a Windows 7 x64 Clean-Install.
I would love to see this annoying bug to be fixed. Thanks!
EDIT: Is is definitly the fan, because I installed a SSD
edit note:- edit subject to match issue.

here is more info about the issue:
Bug: Fan control loop pulses the fan in an annoying pattern
        Severity: low
        Linux annoyance level: severe
        Windows annoyance level: severe
Fix: available from IBM, but incorrectly fixed on some models. Unofficial fix available for firmware hackers.
Workaround: A software workaround is available using an ACPI fan control script, but this overrides the embedded controller's fan control algorithm.
Information: thinkpads.com forum thread 1, thinkpads.com forum thread 2, Problem with fan noise
        Models affected:
            TP-1R (T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p): fixed by firmware 1RHT70WW (3.03) and later
            TP-1Y, TP-70, TP-76 (T43, T43p, R52): IBM provided a broken firmware fix, so they are all affected
            other newer models: unknown status
The fan control loop will vary the fan speed quite a lot, in a very annoying pattern. The broken fix on the T43/R52 firmware causes very loud and annoying pulses every 30s.
People have reportedly returned ThinkPads because of this bug.

  • Envy 7640 printer chirping noise

My new printer makes a regular, quiet chirping noise when idle.  It chirps about every 10 seconds.  When I print something it seems to stop for a while.  But it always returns.  Kinda driving me crazy.
    Thanks for your help.

Please contact HP Support and request a new power supply. The power supply is customer replaceable and can be easily removed by one screw.

  • Chirping Noise

My iPod touch is making chirping noises every once in a while. Is this the new mail alert, perhaps? Or is it somethiing else?
    Dan

Same here. Turns out it is the mail notification sound (took me a while to figure out what was going on, and it drove me nuts).
Alas, you cannot turn it off under 2.0 that I can tell. Under the previous version there was a separate setting for each app under sounds. Now there is just On or Off.

  • I was going to open an email, my screen went black with a spiked circle appears, phone not responding to anything,  have tried holding the wake off button, no respone.  pulled into charger and beeps every 5 seconds or so

went to open an emal. screen went black with a circle in the enter, not moving.  no respone to wake/sleep button.  on charger, chirps about every 5 seconds or so

A hard drive if it has failed will sometimes allow you to boot into windows but may not work completely (Eg: In a scenario, where system partition ;where windows is installed works fine but logical partition of hard drive has gone bad).
On certain conditions, if the hard drive is on verge of failure may/may not respond completely. I would suggest you to run a diagnostics using Seagate Seatools which works on any hard drive irrespective of manufacturer to actually confirm if your hard drive has failed.
Also, any hard drive can fail in spite of it been 1yr old or 1day old as its all manufactured in bulk and most of it comes from China
