Chirping noise on Mac Mini problem

Mac Mini makes chirping noise-stops when top icons selected
New Mac user here, upgraded to Leopard but problem also occurred under Tiger -- Problem: periodically (no apparent reason), while browsing with either Safari or Firefox, Mac mini starts making a chirping noise -- chirping will stop under a few conditions -- e.g., if icon on top (i.e., Bluetooth, Wireless, speaker, etc) is selected) -- chirping will resume when mouse is brought back down on desktop -- eventually closing browser or some other action will stop the chirping -- doesn't "appear" to me to be hardware as indicated in other previous posts --- anybody have any thoughts?
Thanks in advance --

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
While it hasn't been reported very often at all, this 'chirping' has cropped up a couple of times with new minis, though there has not been any apparent cause or cure that I recall being discussed.
First thing to do is test to see if this is drive related. I would download a copy of MenuMeters (http://www.ragingmenace.com/software/menumeters/) and set it to display at least the disk activity and paging indicators (the latter in the memory tab). Watch to see if the chirping is then associated with disk read or write activity. If it is, then you may have a drive problem, and at the very least should ensure that you take regular backups, or indeed have the system examined with a view to possibly replacing the drive.
If the chirping is not associated with disk activity, then it becomes rather harder to pin-point, but if the system is still under warranty, I'd be inclined to have Apple, or an authorized service provider, look at it. If not under warranty but you have an Apple store in your area, you could take it in to have a 'genius' look at it, though beware that in the bustle of a retail store, noises may be harder to hear of course.

  • Chirp Sound From Mac Mini

i just got a brand new mac mini a few days ago. it works great, but i noticed a faint "chirping" sound from time to time coming from it. it's not coming out of the speaker, it still happens when the sound is muted. i can't make it happen...just happened once every couple minutes.
i've seen people asking about this type of thing before, but i've never heard an answer. perhaps it's coming from the HD, which makes me concerned. any ideas?

    here's my plan.
i'm actually thinking that a recent update (10.6.2?) made my mini start chirping. i don't think my HD or graphics card is about to fail...this thing is brand new. and i'm almost positive that it was not chirping for the first few days (before a bunch of updates were done). i think i'm going to ignore it until the next series of updates, and see what happens. maybe it will go away...if it doesn't, i'll probably take it to the apple store near me. i have the complimentary year of coverage for a while, so it shouldn't be a big deal.
it seems strange that a problem like this would be caused by a software update, but you never know. there seems to be at least two cases of this out there.
anyway, chime in if you are experiencing this. and zielvis, continue to post with your thoughts, and i'll do the same.

  • Mac Mini problems

I received my Mac Mini yesterday and have come across a host of problems. Some are probably due to my setup, while others are probably due to the Mac itself. I'd appreciate help in solving some of these.
In order of "most important" to "least important":
1.) I'm trying to hook the Mini to a Yamaha receiver (http://www.yamaha.co.jp/english/product/av/libimage/rxv2500/rxv2500rtl.jpg). Previously, I had hooked my PC media center computer into the orange DVD coaxial digital input jack in the lower left. The other end is a mini plug (which fits both in my old sound card and the Mini). I tried hooking the Mini up this way and the Audio Output preference panel claims I plugged in a "Line Out", not a "Digital Output". I can't get the Mac to recognize it as a digital connection -- I get no sound. Keep in mind this receiver can pretty much play anything thrown at it (PCM, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital, THX, etc). Am I going to have to bite the bullet and buy a cable with Toslink (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=TA9 68LL/A)?
2.) My goal of this setup is to take the movies I own and rip them to a "DVD jukebox" (a server I have in another room). Previously I was able to leave the ripped DVDs as "VIDEO_TS" folders on the hard drive, but Front Row doesn't like that. I've tried Handbrake a couple of times and the results aren't great (choppy video). Is there a guide to what settings are best for ripping DVDs to use in Front Row?
3.) Along that vein, I'm noticing Front Row is displaying my 4:3 videos in their original aspect ratio, rather than stretching them out to fill the widescreen. Is there a way to set this? (I noticed in the DVD player there's a video zoom option, but I don't see it in Front Row). My TV is a 4:3 HDTV, and the Mac Mini is displaying the desktop in 16:9 with black bars on the top and bottom. When it displays a 4:3 movie, it then puts black bars on the left and right. The video takes up 1/4 of the screen in the dead center -- it's like watching a postage stamp (I'm thinking of just dropping the resolution to 640:480 so it fills the screen).
4.) The range on the Bluetooth has been... not great. I bought an Apple wireless keyboard and mouse so I could sit on my couch and use the machine (similar to my old setup), but if I go farther than about 5 feet from the Mac Mini the mouse starts bouncing around the screen and occasionally gets disconnected. I tried a different wireless mouse and keyboard and got the same results. Bluetooth usually has a range much farther than 5 feet, so this is kind of disappointing. Is everyone else experiencing this?
Mac Mini (Intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Chris,
You'll probably get a whole lot better responses and less chatter by posting each question separately, but we're here, so let's dig a bit on some:
    1) No idea - it should just work. Are you sure you gently but firmly inserted the cable in both ends? Better to wait for someone with toslink experience on this one.
    2) Not sure what forum this is best for - third party software questions? In general - you get better video settings by telling handbrake (or any codec) to not compress so much. Try giving it two passes to compress and allowing more data on the output end. There are lots of tutorials online
    http://handbrake.m0k.org/documentation.php
    3) Front Row is really basic - there is no user interface yet to even change preferences and looking at the property list it saves, there appears to be nothing to make that sort of control from the app. Best to re-encode your movies to signal the correct aspect ratio if you want to change how they play by default.
    4) This may be the hardest to change since interference is most likely the issue and very hard to track (minute changes can make a big difference - not to mention that most of us fly blind while determining signal strength and trying to guess if there is interference or not). Try turning off other things that use that frequency. (Airport and home phones that use 2.4GHz are the worst typical offenders.) You might have luck having only air between you on the couch and the mini - but another technology might be needed if the interference is coming from a neighbor with a really powerful phone or a leaky microwave. There is no way a small mouse is going to out gun one of them...

  • Airport Mac Mini Problem

I have the latest version of the Mac Mini. I have only been using the computer for a month even though I purchased it back in July. We have wireless in our how (NETGEAR router) and all the other computers are PCs. The problem I am having with my mac mini is that the airport recognizes our network but when I try to connect, it tells me that “there is a problem connecting to the network “NETGEAR”. The other computers in the house are getting great signal and at times I also get signal with the mini. However 80% of the time it doesn’t work. I called customer service and they told me the problem is interference. I followed their suggestions and the problem persists. What can I do now?

Our network is open. do you have any other
    suggestions?
Have you tried the many excellent suggestions on the Airport forum?
I have found iFelix to be extremely helpful. The link below may help.
I followed the suggestions for my setup which included a windows laptop and all three computers share files, internet connections without any problem.

  • Speaker noise while Mac Mini is in sleep mode

    Hello together,
my Mac Mini produces strange hizz/buzz sounds for approx. half a second every few minutes while it sleeps.
The noise is quite loud and it is a rather annoying sound. I experience these sounds if I connect the Mac Mini via the normal audio out connector on both my Audioengine 5 speakers as well as a Denon amp.
Is there any way to get rid of this noise?

    Thanks for your idea!
Unfortunately, I don't think that's it - all cell phones are away from the machine (and i know the "dadididida" sound of cell phones quite well).
I also thought that it could be a huge machine that is switched on somewhere but then again I have my stuff behind a surge protector so that I think that any such stuff would be filtered. The fact that it is periodic and happened here in the states as well as in Europe makes me wonder if it is an issue with the mac itself.
Anyone else who has that issue?

  • Mac Mini problem

Just bought this a week ago. Using a Dell monitor with a USB adaptor, wireless mouse, and Dynex keyboard. After a few minutes of idle time, Dell "self check" floating icon appears on dark screen. If I hit a key, it disappears and Safari comes on. However, I am not able to type in search window. Cursor is blinking, I can navigate from window to window, but typing is not possible. When I restart system, everything is ok. Computer says it recognizes my keyboard. I did the check on that.
I have replugged the monitor, turned it off and same with the keyboard. Any ideas??

Try attaching the usb stuff directly to the Mini, and not thru the monitor's usb.

  • IPod Touch & Mac Mini wireless

    I have:
    Mac Mini
    iPod Touch
    Wired network.
I have read that this can be done, but cannot figure out how to do it properly.
Need: Have the iPod touch use the Mac Mini as a wireless router/station so that I can browse the web from within 10 feet of the mac mini.
problem: I cannot get the iPod to pick up any web sites, but I can see the wireless share.
Can someone point me to a clear set of instructions on how to share out the mac mini so that an iPod touch can connect and browse the web?

Is the firewall enabled on the Mac mini? If so, you will need to enable Personal Web Sharing on the Mac mini. This punches a hole through the firewall so that the normal web browsing port is accessible via the shared connection.

  • I have a 2012 Mac Mini.  It keeps rebooting randomly.

I have a Mac Mini, bought May 2012 connected to a Thunderbolt Display.  The screen will freeze, go black, go white , and then reboot.  When it reboots, the camera does not work.  If I reboot manually the camera will work. It does this randomly and recently with more frequency. I'm not sure if this is a Mac Mini problem ora Thunderbolt display problem.
    Thanks.

Unplug TBD from wall.  Wait 3 minutes and reconnect and see what happens.

  • ITunes visualizer causes Mac Mini to crash

When I run iTunes visualizer on full screen, after a while (about an hour into playing) it causes my whole system to crash. I thought it was the mac mini at first (because a friend of mine ran his macbook pro with itunes visualizer and it never crashed for 8 hours) so i got it exchanged for a new mac mini, but the new one also crashed while running iTunes visualizer for a while.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
Also, does anyone know how to fix this situation? I feel like it is a mac mini problem, but it could also be itunes....?
    Please help!
    Thanks
    James

You're not alone Cupfish, I have the same problem - Using the latest Mac Mini and latest iTunes!
I can sometimes rectify it by toggling visualizer on and off using the keyboard, but half the time it is completely locked up and requires a restart.
Will try and do a bit of digging into the problem myself, let us know how you get on.

  • Mac mini poor Wifi strength

I have a stock Core Solo with OS 10.5.3.
I can see my neighbours' open APs. With a Gateway XP laptop, I can connect to their APs, though with low strength just fine.
But my Mac mini it keeps "searching for AP" and sometimes shows those APs and sometimes they disappear in the list at the top right of menu bar, and then display again, so I Just think it barely sees them due to low signal strength...
So the question is.. why is my Mac mini has such bad Wifi connection by Windows laptop can connect with though with low signal (similar to one-bar strength)?
Is this a known Mac mini problem?

First the obvious comment: that unless you have permission, you shouldn't be connecting to neighboring wifi networks that you do not pay for. In many places in fact it is illegal to do so.
That said, to some extent what you report is not an uncommon issue with the mini. In comparison with the laptop you mention, the mini's wifi antenna is small and buried inside the system's casing, and while it is just under the top cover (in the back-right corner) anything above the mini or indeed any sources of interference will significantly impact the wifi signal strength, more than likely on laptops or other systems where the antenna is less likely to be bounded by metal casings.
You can test the wifi signal strength and quality with a application such as AP Grapher (http://www.chimoosoft.com/apgrapher.html) which is an excellent tool for analyzing wifi signal and thus helping to troubleshoot these kind of problems. However it can't resolve issues where there is poor signal due to range or interference sources such as structural components in buildings deflecting the signal or microwave ovens or cordless phones, or external radio sources such a paging systems, all of which are capable of causing wifi disruption.
Given the frequency at which wifi operates, small changes in location of the access point or system can make a big difference to signal level and quality, so you might find that moving the mini a little (even a few inches) can make a lot of difference. Making sure there is no electronic equipment directly above will also help to some extent. It's also possible in many situations that something as simple as changing the wifi channel resolves these problems because they can be caused by multiple wifi networks interfering with each other. Changing the channel will require the owner of the access point/router/AP to make that change however.
Bear in mind however, that effective wifi range is very limited, so much about 30 or 40 feet and signal becomes subject to considerable losses and distortions. The solution may be to get your own network set up!

  • TS4113 Mac mini looses audio output through HDMI after being in 'sleep mode'

Since a month or so, my Mac mini is unable to send audio through HDMI output after being in 'sleep mode'.
Recently this was no problem, but now I cannot hear anything after unsleeping (unless I reboot fully).
    Please help.

This is not just a Mac Mini problem.  I've found comments from people with all kinds of Mac, with any kind of external sound device, who all have this same issue.
The common factor is Mountain Lion.
Apparently there is a new build (12F42) which is supposed to fix this.
    http://www.gadgetguide4u.com/new-os-x-1085-build-number-12f42.html
Apple released it to their employees on the 25th Sept.
Here's hoping that build is available for the rest of us soon ...

  • Mac Mini (Late 2012) RAM Upgrade

    Hello everyone!
I just got my first Mac machine, a Mac Mini i5 with 4GB of RAM. So far I'm loving it, everything seems to work flawlessly, updates are painless, etc. (I come from the PC/Linux world so I feel like a child with a new toy) however I think I need a small RAM upgrade.
I was looking for some cheap modules and I came across with these Kingston KTA-MB1600/4G modules that, according to the mini memory specs, should work.
    http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/partsinfo.asp?root=us&LinkBack= &ktcpartno=KTA-MB1600/4G
AFAIK the memory specs for the mini are:
    PC3-12800 DDR3
    Unbuffered
    Non-parity
    204-pin module
    1600 MHz
I was wondering if any of you have tried these or any Kingston modules on your Mac's? Do you agree with me that these should work on my mini?
I'm sorry if this a stupid question or an obvious question but I'm not 100% sure. In the PC world I would probably buy whatever that match the specs.
    Thank you!

upgrading mac mini ram is the easiest thing in the world
for 16 gig i agree with Randy u can buy in
http://www.macsales.com , or go to corsair...
    so far it work flawless!!
but by the way consider the mac mini problem with the hdmi and etc if u still want to buy it,,,
i think u should wait a bit and gather more info
    but that's just me
    ciao.

  • Problem with sound in rented itunes series on mac mini (2010) hdmi

    Hello,
I just bought the new mac mini with HDMI. It is connected via HDMI to my receiver Denon AVR 3310. The receiver shows that it has "multi channel in" on the display.
I made all the configurations so that i can watch dvd an the mac mini. When i play a movie with Dolby Digital the receiver does show that on the display and playback is possible without any problems. All my 5.1 speakers play sound.
The big problem is with iTunes. When I want to watch rented series from iTunes Store, for example Dr. House, only 2 speakers of my 5.1 are used. And when I change to surround in iTunes I can only hear static noise.
What is the problem? What is wrong with iTunes?
    Thanks in advance

I am having the same issue.
I have a Panasonic TH-50PX60U, and a Yamaha RX-V2065. The Mini is plugged into the Yamaha via HDMI and Yamaha to TV via HDMI.
Problem: Just to clarify I do NOT have a video problem. That part seems to be working fine, my problem is with audio. When ever I switch inputs on the receiver or turn the system off (not the Mini, that always stays on) the audio defaults back to the internal speaker in the Mini. I have to go into system settings and change it back to the HDMI audio out. This is super frustrating. I'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong area, but it's the only thread that looked like it might have an answer. Thanks!
