First, CHM is the file extension used for Microsoft's Compiled HTML Help files. So, in short, it IS html.
That said, simply use http://calibre-ebook.com/ for all things e-book related. You won't be sorry.

  • Create a markup Chm file to show the difference between 2 versions

    Hello all,
    I saw there are some markup chm files showing the update in the content in the recent version.
    The updated html content are shown in yellow or blue. The content column with red color * indicates there is an update.
    Please can anyone let me know how to create such CHM file with markup to indicate update ?
    Many thanks in advance !!!

    To the best of my knowledge a source control system is only going to tell you which topics have been modified, not what the changes are.
    If you are the only author, then the Topic List can show the modified date of topics. If you are working with others, your Topic List will only cover what you have edited. Not sure if the source control system can give you dates modified. I would think it can as it is all about dates.
    As to the exact content, I think you will find that is down to you. If you are referring to just flagging changed topics in the TOC of a CHM, I'll hand you back to Rick as I believe that can be done and he will know how. That is not the same though as marking the actual changes.

  • RoboHelp HTML does not generate .chm file

    We have a large help system for F1 help with about 2,000 help
    topics in about 50 different Word .doc files. We had used RoboHelp
    for Word previously, but with the goal of generating a single .chm
    help file, we tried using RoboHelp HTML to change the Word .doc
    files to .htm files. RoboHelp HTML does this conversion and creates
    2,000 .htm files.
    When we try to generate the .chm file for the help system,
    RoboHelp for HTML does not respond and does not create the .chm
    file. Is RoboHelp HTML not capable of handling such a big help
    system? Are there any workarounds to generate the .chm file
    successfully?

    Peter, thanks for your input. Here's where we are. We opened
    RoboHelp HTML and converted the Word docs into .html files. Then we
    were able to generate the .chm file (it worked this time) using
    RoboHelp HTML. We have about 50 .gif images, and no external links.
    The actual number of HTML files with help topics is close to
    4,000 for this F1 field help in our application. Ideally, we would
    love to have a master project with sub-projects, but it doesn't
    appear as a practical alternative. The .hh file (for F1 field help)
    is generated from the application by the developer and given to us.
    In order to have a master project and slave projects, we
    would have to manually split that automatically-generated.hh file
    into individual .hh files, true? That means we would have to
    correlate which .html help topic file corresponds with which map id
    number, then chalk out how we want to divide the .html help topics
    into individual projects that correspond to their .hh files?
    This help system I inherited is 10 years old, and the
    resource time we would spend (if we chose to modularize this help
    system) would be gigantic in scope. If there is a simpler and
    efficient way to modularize our F1 help system, I would love to
    hear about it!

  • Header of a CHM file displayed as HTML Help

    Hi,
    I have an issue w.r.t the title bar of the chm files for Japanese, Chinese and Russian languages.
    As per Adobe support team advice, whenever I have to work on Japanese, Chinese and Russian languages, I am changing the system language setting to the respective language.
    As per the settings, I am successfully generating the required chm output. (Correct title of the project is displayed).
    When I revert back to English langugae settings, the title bar of the chm file is displayed as HTML Help.
    please let me know how the issue can be resolved.
    NOTE: I am not able to upload or insert images related to the above issue. The system is diplaying an error.

    Hi Muralidhar,
    This is because the title for the browser is set to be NewWindow under Windows properties. To change this, please go to—
    Project Set-up pod – Window—Right click and Select properties of the Window that you have applied here (in your screenshot, it says ”<None>”)
    I believe you have either removed the Window or not applied it from the screen below.
    Under your Webhelp Pro/Flash help Pro, you choose the same Window
    Let me know if this works.
    Thanks,

  • HTML Help Workshop; creating the *.chm file

    I'm about to create the documentation for a large LabVIEW
    automation project. I would also like to use this
    documentation as the content for my help-file used by the
    LabVIEW program (a *.chm or a *.hlp-file) via the
    Control Online Help.VI.
    The question is, what is the most optimal way to create this document,
    without having to do the job almost twice ?
    Normally I would create the documentation as a Word-document.
    But as far as I see, the help-file system has to be created by the
    MS HTML Help Workshop program, and that uses a large collection
    of html-files to compile into the CHM file. And the html-files that
    can be exported from Word aren't optimal, are they, with
    a lot of extra code etc...
    Somebody have obvious
    ly looked at this problem before me.
    What are the tips, tricks and suggestions around ?
    Martin

    For everbody else in the audience, check out
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/htmlhelp/ht
    ml/vsconHH1Start.asp to download the free HTML help workshop. It is a
    package which takes a set of HTML files and generates a standard win2k/XP
    helpfile.
    However, your point is completely true: it just a major pain to make a
    "pretty" version of both offline and online help. Both documents can have
    the same content: a section explaining each menu item, several sections to
    explain common tasks, a section explaining terms, etc. I dont see a huge
    difference in usability as long as you create a union of material.
    As for exporting I haven't found a good solution. As you've seen, you must
    have the seperate HTML files for the help compiler. That's how the table of
    contents, etc is generated. For my current project, I maintain that as a
    frontpage web and apply a cascading style sheet. I didn't find a good way to
    (automatically) split the word document into several HTML files or join the
    frontpage web into a single organized word file. It wasn't a huge issue,
    because I ended up using printed material as an installation guide and
    online help as program documentation.
    The one particularily useful thing was programming a custom "document my
    progam" VI which exports using my special documentation format. Of course
    that is really only suitable for the programmer's reference section. However
    I really, really, really hated using Print -> VI documentation and
    reformatting every time. I'm sure you'll soon notice that it gets tiring.

  • Invalid HTML tag - Is this true? Child .chm files cannot have underscores in name?

    I’ve been having the following problem:
    file mk:@MSITStore:  … xxx.chm::/xxx.hhc contains an invalid HTML tag
    In more detail what happens:
    You click on the .chm file to open it and you get a dialog with an error message:
    The file mk:@MSITStore:E:\p4_work\1663\isentris\isentris\end-user\trunk\src\Symyx_Isentris\!SSL!\M icrosoft_HTML_Help\Symyx_Isentris.chm::/Symyx_Isentris.hhc contains an invalid HTML tag
    There is an OK button and when you click that, then the .chm file opens just fine.
    All child .chms open fine when I click on them.
    This merged help project worked fine until I upgraded from RH X5 to RH7. I hadn’t changed anything. Then I started reading the forum (RoboHelp HTML Help).
    What I’ve done so far:·         Upgraded all help projects from RH X5 to HR7.
    ·         Regenerated all .chm files, added them again to parent help project’s TOC.  Child .chm files open fine.
    ·         Regenerated a new parent .chm.
    So, I see that one of Colum's answers in another thread was to make sure that none of the child .chms had underscores in the title.
    >>>>>>>>>> !!!!!!!!   you mean that RoboHelp now does not accept underscores in .chm titles? Please don’t let it be so.
    Also, several people said that they solved the problem like this:
    ·         “You will get this message if your merged CHMs are not in a book in your merged TOC. Check that. “  You mean I have to associate a book icon with each child .chm in the parent’s TOC?
    ·         My guess is that the merged project should be placed inside a book in the main project's TOC. You'll just have to rearrange the subprojects TOCs so you don't have books inside books.
    What does “in a book” mean? See my attached jpegs. The child project’s TOC is in book form  … within the child project. However, in the parent project’s TOC, the child projects are shown with that merged symbol … kinda looks like a very angular G. Should I create books that link to destinations? Is that what I should do in the parent project’s TOC? Somehow that doesn’t look like it’s going to work – I looked at both dialogs – link and no link – neither one looked like it would work.
    Thanks so much for your help!!

    When you have a directory path in the TOC, that means that the directory structure should match. So for example:
    TOC (in parent.chm)
      !SSL!\Microsoft_HTML_Help\symyx_client.chm
      symyx_for_excel.chm
    End folder structure: (+ for folder, - for file)
    + Help
       - parent.chm
       - symyx_for_excel.chm
         + !SSL!
            + Microsoft_HTML_Help
               - symyx_client.chm
    Now if the symyx_client file shows up okay after the error message, possibly the parent chm file is smart enough to correct for the directory structure not being there, but a file with the correct name existing in the same directory as the parent.
    We've always tried to ensure out merge references don't have a path - RH has the annoying habit of requiring the chm file to be copied into the root, but we just delete it after the first build, as it shouldn't need to be there for the actual compile process. In fact, we've had problems with the chm being physically built into our parent chm, drastically increasing the file size and resulting in duplicate and outdated topics in search. We leave the file there for the first build as sometimes the merge doesn't work first go without it; I think it has to do with how it gets added to the hhp file.
    To test that our merge works, we just copy a couple of the files into the same folder  (e.g. c:\temp\test) to double-check. We need this process as our clients get different combinations of the total chm files built into our parent.
    Something else I've just thought of is maybe there is something strange happening in the actual hhc file. Do you have any topics in that TOC with characters other than a-z, 0-9 and underscore in the filename (in the topic title should be okay, but maybe some particularly odd ones might cause an issue)?

    Pad2, the new iPad Supported Video Formats & Movie Formats
    H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
    MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
    Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
    Here's one way to install. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
    Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
    Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • RoboHelp for HTML 9 - Problem with viewing .chm file on 64bit machine

    I am working with RoboHelp for HTML 9 on a 32 bit machine. Recently, we encountered problems when viewing a .chm file on a 64 bit machine. The TOC was fine, but the topics did not appear, only error message "Navigation of this web page cancelled". My compilation settings did not change since the last compilation some months ago. What happens?

    Generally, I've only ever seen the need to ensure the CHM is unblocked if it has been downloaded from the web. I could see where it could possibly occur if one moved the CHM from a network drive to a local drive, but I'm skeptical that would be required in that case.
    Cheers... Rick

  • RoboHelp 8 HTML - context sensitive chm file does not open?

    This works:
    RoboHelp_CSH.RH_ShowHelp(0, "C:\\RoboHelp\\!SSL!\\WebHelp\\XHelp_File.htm", RoboHelp_CSH.HH_HELP_CONTEXT, 2);
    This doesn't
    RoboHelp_CSH.RH_ShowHelp(0, "C:\\RoboHelp\\!SSL!\\Microsoft_HTML_Help\\XHelp_File.chm", RoboHelp_CSH.HH_HELP_CONTEXT, 1);
    Why does the context sensitve calls of a chm file not work?
    Does it require a different map file?

    Hi there
    I believe the actual call is different.
    Here is a copy/paste from an older RoboHelp HTML CHM file that we might use as an example:
    Window-level Help for Windows applications
    To call a topic using a map number, make a call to the HTML Help API using  the following syntax:
    HWND  HtmlHelp(Window(), “c:\path\helpfile.chm”, HH_HELP_CONTEXT,  Number);
    To call a topic using a file name, make a call to the HTML Help API using  the following syntax:
    HWND HtmlHelp (Window(), “c:\path\helpfile.chm”,  HH_DISPLAY_TOPIC, "topicfile.htm");
    Hopefully that helps.,. Rick

  • Ls shows ??.html after creating file with arabic name using java applicatio

    Hi,
    I have a java application which is taking attachments and saving to the file system. when somebody attaches any file with the file name in arabic, the ls command shows ??.html , ????.html etc. The application is also not able to find the file later, cos it expects the arabic named file. How can I accomplish this task (" how can i rename a text file with an arabic name")
    Any help would be highly appreciated
    Many thanks in advance
    Ushas Symon

    I found a sample class that also uses HttpServlet and it won't work on my computer Either:
    import java.io.*;
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class Circle extends HttpServlet
        public void doGet(  HttpServletRequest request,
                            HttpServletResponse response)
                                throws ServletException, IOException
            response.setContentType("text/html");
            PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
            out.println( "<BODY><H1 ALIGN=CENTER> Circle Info </H1>\n");
            try
                String sdiam = request.getParameter("diameter");
                double diam = Double.parseDouble(sdiam);
                out.println("<BR><H3>Diam:</H3>" + diam +
                "<BR><H3>Area:</H3>" + diam/2.0 * diam/2.0 * 3.14159 +
                "<BR><H3>Perimeter:</H3>" + 2.0 * diam/2.0 * 3.14159);
            catch ( NumberFormatException e )
                out.println("Please enter a valid number");
            out.println("</BODY></HTML>");
    }As for IE I tried setting all of my security to the lowest settings I have but it didn't work. I just noticed though that the IE explorer bar at the bottom states :
    Exception null.
    When the applet is first started. Not sure what to make of that.
    I don't think it's a dependancy error because when I make a reference to something that the compiler can't find I get a different error. Or if I miss importing something it just refuses to compile.
    I'm wondering if there's something wrong with my Java or the Servlet classes?
    Thanks

  • RoboHelp HTML 9 - CHM file The Back button works uncorrectly.

    Dear all,
    I am using RH HTML 9 to generate chm file from my project. The problem is when I click on topic 1, topic 2, topic 3 in turn in the Content pane. After that I click the Back button three times, topic 2 is highlighted on the Content pane, although the content of the topic 1 is displayed on the right pane. I think the topic 1 should be highlighed on the Content pane. Is it a bug of Microsoft HTML Help ?
    Please help me understand what Microsoft HTML Help does in generating .chm within RoboHelp 9 ?
    Thank you.

  • CHM-File: Glossary is not showing HHActiveX.dll does not work

    Hi guys,
    I'm sorry, I know the problem's been diskussed a lot. But I still have the problem, that after generating my CHM-File the glossary tab is empty. I already tried registering various HHActiveX.dlls i found in robohelps installation directory.
    I tried registering them by using %windir%\system32\cmd.exe and %windir%\syswow64\cmd.exe.
    The dlls I tried to register are:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe RoboHelp 9\RoboHTML\HHActiveX.dll
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe RoboHelp 9\Redist\HHActiveX.dll
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe RoboHelp 9\Redist\x64\HHActiveX.dll
    I tried to register them all together and i tried to register only one at a time.
    The funny thing is, after generating and opening the file directly out of robohelp, the glossary showed up once. After closing and opening the same file, the glossary was again empty.
    I am using RoboHelp 9 on Windows 8.1. 64-bit.
    Is there a chance to get that CHM-File to work?
    Thank's in advance.

    Thank you for your answer.
    Sorry, I forgot to mention, when I was registering the dlls by using cmd.exe in the system32 directory and the syswow64 directory, I was typing "regsvr32 C:\Windows\System32\HHActiveX.dll"
    Also I have been using the cmd.exes that are located in system32 and syswow64, each time using the "regsvr32 <path><dll-name>"-command. The cmd.exes where executed with administator's rights. Isn't that the same procedure mentioned in your link?
    I was trying to have both the 32-bit-dll and the 64-bit-dll version registered at the same time and lateron for troubleshooting just one of them at a time. (now that I come to think of it, is it even possible to register two versions of the same dll at a time?)
    I'm starting to get really confused.
    Which Version of the DLL do I need to register by using which of the cmd.exes/regsvr32-versions?
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe RoboHelp 9\RoboHTML\HHActiveX.dll > in system32\cmd.exe oder syswow64\cmd.exe?
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe RoboHelp 9\Redist\HHActiveX.dll > in system32\cmd.exe oder syswow64\cmd.exe?
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe RoboHelp 9\Redist\x64\HHActiveX.dll > in system32\cmd.exe oder syswow64\cmd.exe?
    And does the dll have to be in the directory of the regsvr32.exe while registering? Does it take a reboot for the effect to show?

  • RoboHelp HTML 9 - CHM file Lost focus on selected topic on Content tab.

    Dear all,
    In my generated CHM file, I click on a topic on the Content tab, then I click anywhere in the content displayed on the right pane. The selected topic on the Content tab then not highlighted anymore. Why it happens like that ?
    Anyone please help me explain this case and guide me solve that problem.
    Thank a lot.
    P.

    Hi there
    There are a couple of options you likely need to configure.
    First, Click View > Pods > Project Set up and look at the Window properties for your CHM.
    Note the options I've highlighted below:
    Next, Click View > Pods > Single Source Layouts and right-click the Microsoft HTML Help layout.
    Choose Properties and look at the Single Source Layout properties for your CHM file. Once you examine them, click the Edit button next to "Advanced Settings".
    The HTML Help Advanced Settings dialog shoul open. Click the TOC Styles tab.
    From there, ensure you have the option I've highlighted below.
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • Save as PDF, HTML and CHM file formats

    Is FrameMaker capable of saving in all three of these formats: PDF, HTML and CHM file formats? Would InDesign be a better choice?

    The first two, yes. For Compiled Help, the third, I'm sure you know that the files have to be compiled, so no, and I don't think the source files for compilation are a direct export either, unless you can follow an XML path. Although the popularity of CHM is way down from a number of years ago because HTML is more portable, but that's a different issue.
    If I were you, I'd look at MIF2go, a Frame add on that does support export to all these formats, and a number of others.
    InDesign doesn't do this either...
    Just as a word of unasked for advice, choosing your authoring platform by what it can output is a back-asswords way to choose a tool. Find the tool that suits the way you create documents the best so you get more required features to create your stuff quicker and easier.
    Both the tools you mention and most other modern ones do pretty open-ended output, either directly or through filters or conversion utilities... there are always ways to massage output to a different format. So output is certainly a consideration, but it's a relatively minor one.
    As for input tools, you're comparing apples and oranges with FM and ID. FM excels at book style documents with multiple chapters or files that share common layout characteristics. InDesign excels at shorter documents that are usually design-driven, that require hands-on layout tweaking, and it can't do multiple file management.
    Cheers,
    Art
