Choice of camcorder: Canon Legria HF G10 vs Panasonic HDC-TM700?

Some advice pls:
Would like to update my camcorder - to a prosumer quality (or high end consumer).
I use FCP X (and love it) but am torn between
Canon Legria HF G10
or,
Panasonic HDC-TM700
Any advice?
I currently use the SD-9 Panasonic, and am not happy with low-light shots (way too Lossy).  Has compression technology improved in the last 3 years, or will I be disappointed with either of the above model's approach to compression?
Thanks
Rob

The SD-9 is a fine little camera from several years back.  Its claim to fame was its small size and early use of SD cards.  I think its highest bit rate was only about 15Mbps however.  The G10 uses a bigger sensor, much more advanced compression processing.  Honestly, when I have clips from my pro Sony HVR-Z5U HD camcorders on the timeline next to clips from the G10, it is very hard to tell the difference.  The G10 is actually much more color accurate than the pro Sonys.
Furthermore, the G10 is a breeze to connect to the computer and use the Import from Camera in FCP X.  The G10 comes with 32GB built in with two SD slots to go beyond that.  I also have the HF M41 that uses the same sensor and has 2 SD card slots, but I never even have to use SD cards on the G10 unless I want to add them.  It has a automatic relay mode that goes to the next storage SD slot when it has filled up the previous one.  Thus you can use the internal 32 GB with a couple of other 32GB SD cards to get over 12 hours of the highest quality (24Mbps) video recorded.  You can even specify to record to both SD cards at the same time so you have an automatic backup of your work.
Check out the detail on that review site I gave you.  It's the best ... I'm not a cheerleader for it ... just stating the facts.  I am very, very impressed.  One of the best buys I have ever made in video work.  Best wishes.

  • Does anyone of you use a HD-camcorder like Canon Legria HF G10 and cut films with Final Cut Express.

Does anyone of you use a HD-camcorder like Canon Legria HF G10 and cut films with Final Cut Express 4.0.1. I did not buy this product yet but ask before. Now I have 4GB RAM and i5 MacBooK Pro. Do any problems exist using FCE having made films with this camera?
I save the films als QuickTime films (mov) and create DVDs with iDVD.
Will the data be too many if I make films with such a camera (HD) so that 1 hour of film cannot be burned to one DVD (or if is not necessary to film with such a good quality because in iDVD the film looses its quality?).

I was able to find this info regarding the camera:
    AVCHD 1080/50i. 1080/25P (Maximum AVCHD 24Mbps)
    Recording Modes
    MXP 24Mbps / FXP 17Mbps / XP+ 12Mbps / SP 7Mbps / LP 5Mbps
The 1080/50i (interlaced) modes will work with FCE. PAL in this case. 60i is NTSC.

  • Add Media in PremiereElements 11 from a Canon Legria HF G10 AVCHD cam does not work

    Hi Everybody,
I need help as I didn't find anything in the FAQ concerning my problem. I use a canon Legria HF G10 camcorder (AVCHD).
Importing videos into Premiere Elements 10 is OK
But after upgrading to the version 11 of Premiere Elements, I do not succeed to get any video from my cam. The camera does not appear in the field SOURCE althoug my MAC OS did recognize it. And of course I get the message that no compatible device was detected.
Does anybody have experience with such a case or know how to help me ?
    Thanks in advance
    François

If you Copy the files w/ full folder structure, as Ann indicates, you do not have to have that particular card (or camera's HDD, if it has one), attached to the computer. You have those files on your HDD, so you can use that card for other shots.
PrE does NOT Copy the media files, when you Import them. Instead, it only creates links to where those files were located, when Imported. If they are still on the card, and it is removed from the computer, PrE cannot find those media files. If they are Imported from the Copies on the HDD, and are not Deleted, Moved, or Renamed, PrE can follow its link to them, as needed.
    Good luck,

  • Canon Legria FS19 camcorder supported in iMovie 11?

    Hi there,
I would like to ask whether my Camcorder Canon Legria FS 19 will be among the supported cameras in iMovie 11. Because I was unable to find it among the supported cameras on the  site.
I would like to know whether it makes sense to upgrade for me or not.
    Thanks for your reply,
    Best wishes,
    LackoB

No it's not compatible. Even the camcorders that are listed as compatible (eg Legria HF20 / HF200 aren't compatible. Just do a search on 'Legria' and 'Interlacing' and you will find many tales of woe.

  • Import from Canon Legria HR200 to iMovie11

When I connect camcorder CANON Legria HF200 through USB in PC connect mode, it is not possible to use "Import from camera" to import video files from camcorder Canon Legria HF200 iMovie 11 because only Insight camera appears. Canon Legria HF200 is recognized as USB external device. I use 32GB SDHC card FAT32 format. The same result is when I put the card in SD reader, or when I copy the folder to HDD. What am I doing wrong?

Hook up the usb cable to the camera with the camera in "play" mode. Then plug the other end of the usb into your computer. The screen on your camera should then ask to what do you want connect the camera. Choose "computer/printer." Then boot iMovie and press import. Most likely if iMovie then asks you which clips you wish to import, everything should work.
However, you are correct - the camera is not listed as a supported camera.

  • Log and Transfer from Canon Legria HF M36

    Hello everyone,
    I write from Italy.
I have a big problem. I can not successfully import video clips from my camcorder Canon Legria HF M36 into Final Cut Pro using Log and Transfer with any setting. If I get same clips in iMovie 09 I get clips into Apple Intermediate code, good. If I use the same clips in Final Cut Pro 7.0 video looks rough. I do not know what to do. Who can help me?
    Thank you very much
    Giovanni Losacco

That camera is confusing me when I look it up on BandH. Is it HD or SD?
It sends to SD card, yes? What format are you bringing it in as? I'd try Apple ProRes LT to start. See if that works.

  • HT5148 I wish to purchase a Panasonic HDC-TM900 camcorder - will I have any problems with FCPX

It is my intention to buy a new camcorder and am thinking of a Panasonic HDC-TM900 but I have read is some of the reviews that there are some problems in downloading into FCPX.  Is this camera a good purchase or is there a better alternative at around £650. (in uS dollars I would guess at about $1000)

I have a similar model and it works OK with FCP X.
    HDC-SDT750.

  • Canon Legria HF R26 camcorder compatability?

I have a Canon Legria HF R26 camcorder bought especially to video my nephew's wedding in Italy last June, and my daughter's wedding 2 weeks ago. I have only, just now, tried to download the footage and have discovered that it's not compatible with my MacBook Pro with iLife '09. It seems that even iLife '11 wouldn't recognise it. Has anyone any suggestions as to how I can download the footage?
    Thanks,
    Sally

I've just got it working! All I did differntly was plug the USB cable into the camera once it was on and already plugged into the computer. It is currently downloading the images. Phew!

  • Help needed: How to import video from Canon Legria Camcorder FS306?

    Dear all,
After happily purchasing Canon Legria Camcorder FS306, I realise that my IMOVIE HD could not detect the camcorder when connected to my Macbook pro.
    Have 2 questions here:
    1. Is it impossible for IMovie HD to detect newer camcorders? Should I then upgrade to IMOVIE09?
    2. Currently, Canon Legria Camcorder FS306 is not listed as 1 of the supported camcorders for IMOVIE09. It is one of the newer models. Is IMOVIE09 able to import video from this camcorder now? Or in the near future? Or it may never be supported?
    Tks!
    Gam

You would need imovie 09 to use this camcorder.
This camcorder is not on the iMovie 09 supported list. However, every Canon camcorder since 2008 has supported iMovie 08 and 09, so odds are good that this one will, too. Odds are good that it works right now. IF you want to know for sure, call Canon. ....or take your camera to an Apple Store and hook it up.
It might be possible to do some manual conversions and continue to use iMovie 6. For example, you could try converting the MPEG2 files to DV using a tool like MPEG Streamclip. You would also need the $20 Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component. I find iMovie 09 to be a much better editor, but if you are comfortable with iMovie 06, this might be worth a try for you.

  • Is camcorder compatibility guide really accurate? Canon Vixia HF G10 or something else?

OK, looking for a HD camcorder and the Canon Vixia HF G10 looks great. I check the compatibility guide  http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US  and it shows to be compatible. I'm about to pull the trigger, then I see a review on Amazon that indicates it isn't compatible with iMovie11 (2nd review down)  http://www.amazon.com/Canon-G10-Camcorder-Internal-Memory/product-reviews/B004HW 7DZM/ref=cm_cr_pr_btm_link_next_2?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&pageNumber=2  .  So now I don't know if the compatibility chart is worth diddly. I already went through heck trying to get my old miniDVs to capture in iMovie (ended up having to buy iMovie06 to get that to work!). Now I want to avoid headaches ... I want to get an HD camera that will just plug in and work without a bunch of headaches. I like Canon and Sony ... or maybe Panasonic. Can anyone recommend a nicer model that they have experience with working flawlessly with iMovie11? I'm looking to spend $600-$1200 or so. Thanks!

In general, people have really good results with Canon, Panasonic, and Sony. These brands have a long history with Apple video products. The only exception I have seen is when some of the manufacturers promote 60P, which is non-standard and does not play on a TV. iMovie cannot handle 60P easily. If you stick to standard formats like 30P, 29.97i, 24P, 25i or 25p, any of those manufacturers should be fine.

  • Import from  camera canon legria HV videos to imovie ?

I would like to import from my camera canon legria HV videos to imovie, but my macbook air is not recognizing my camera, i go out from my camera with firewire and go in the macbook air by usb. My camera is on and the tape is on "Play" .
Is the problem, that i go in by USB ?
    thx

    Hi,
looking at one of my files format is
    Apple MPEG-2 SD Camcorder Video, 720 x 576 (1024 x 576), Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Left, 48.000 kHz
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Right, 48.000 kHz
So it seems that imovie re-packed my movies to mov but keeping MPeg2 as video codec.
Then I don't understand the point of this. If the codec used is still MPEG2
why not just the file as it is ?
What I don't like is that import / export take times even when it is (seems) useless.
I used to use tools like VLC and avidemux to do some change on the video.
but it is now impossible as they won't be able to open the mov files
anyway, If I understand valuable replies from both of you I have no other choice.
thank a lot both of you

  • Premiere elements reads my SD Card but not the hard drive of my Canon Legria?

    Kia Ora from New Zealand,
I am using Premiere elements 8.0 and a Canon Legria HF S10 on a pc with Windows XP Pro.  I am trying to import HD footage directly into Premiere from my Camera hard drive.  In Premiere when I try to "get media" the media on the camera's sd card appears and can be imported, but the cameras hard drive is not acknowledged - so I can't get the video off the cameras hard drive.
The format of the footage on the sd card is XP+ and the footage on my cameras hard drive is MXP.  I have a work around where I dump the hard drive footage onto my pc then pull it into Premiere..but there is limitations with this (I cannot differentiate between takes and therefore see which clips to import).  Can anybody shed some light on this for me?  Should Premiere be able to locate my cameras hard drive?
    Thanks Al

    Thanks Steve,
I use the preset PAL AVCHD Full HD 1028 i25, Im using premiere elements 8.0.
The differentiate between takes thing is...I was hoping to see thumbnails of the video clips before importing them into Premiere (like the ones that show up from my sd card), so as to not import unnecessary footage.  When pulling them from Get Media/From Files and Folders the files are just numbers, which means I have to delete all unwanted clips on the camcorder or know the names of them so as to not pull them onto the computer.
Eventually I will be exporting the projects in a number of different ways, mainly web video file sharing and DVD.
Ideally my computer will read the cameras hard drive, I am astonished it picks up the memory card that sits inside the cam without linking to the cams hard drive.  Could this be about the quality of the footage (the SD card footage is in XP+ and the hard drive footage is MXP?

  • Is the Canon Legria HF M56 compatible with Final Cut Pro X

I am new to Mac and new to Final Cut Pro X. I am looking to buy a new HD Video Camcorder to use with my new computer/software and wondered whether or not the Canon Legria HF M56 is compatible with Final Cut Pro X.
If it is, do you have to import the footage directly from the Camcorder, or can you first save the files to the Mac and import them that way?
I currently use a Sony HandyCam HDR-SR10 which produces AVCHD .mts files. I have these saved on my Mac after transferring them over from my PC but Final Cut Pro X cannot import them. Very frustrating for a professional app to be unable to import these files. Even Cyberlink Power Director can use these files.
    Thanks for your help

It's not on the tested list but it may well work.

  • How to enable WiFi transfer from Canon Legria HF M52 to iMac

My iMac is a late 2012 model with Mountain Lion (v. 10.8.3).
Recently I bought a Canon Legria HF M52 camcorder which is WiFi enabled, and is capable of transferring videos (AVCHD/MP4) wireless. The camera package included software for WiFi transfer on Windows PC, but not for Mac. However, still, according to the instruction manual, it should be possible to transfer files wireless to Mac using the Mac as a FTP server. Though, following the instruction manual, I`m still not being able to transfer files from my camera to my Mac.
    1. I know for a fact that the camera is correctly connected to the WiFi network, as I`ve managed to transfer files onto a friend´s Windows PC.
    2. Video files are easily transferred to Mac using the USB cable (but the CABLE is what I want to avoid), both AVCHD/MP4.
    3. Since Mountain Lion no longer has the option to enable/activate FTP server under "System Preferences/Sharing", I have enabled FTP via "Terminal" as described in this link; http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4704.
    4. Camera setup:
         - Use iMac IP address as "FTP server", 192.xxx.x.x (dynamic IP, so it is changed in camera setup if IP address is changed upon iMac reboot).
         - Port 21 (as dictated by the camera`s instruction manual).
         - Username / password as for the iMac admin account.
         - Destination folder; /User/Movies
    5. I have verified connectivity from MBA to iMac connecting via IP address / username and password.
Still, when I try to transfer files from the camera, I get an error message while attempting to connect to the iMac; "An error occured during FTP communication. File transfer was not completed". Have made several attempts to reboot both iMac and camera.
Any tips on how to enable my iMac to receive video files wireless?

I guess those programs are intented for outgoing connections, not incoming connections?
Well, anyways, I managed to solve the problem. Just summing up in case others meet the same problem:
    - Went to Apple Store and bought/installed "OS X Server".
    - Followed the install wizard for the OS X Server.
    - Under "FTP" in OS X Server, turned "On".
    - Under sys prefs/sharing; make sure "Sharing" is activated (which already had been done in my case).
    - Add folder, e.g. "Movies", and enable "read/write" for "everybody" (already done in my case).
    - Back to the OS X Server; changed share to "Movies".
(you can change share options in OS X Server as well, the same way as under sys prefs.).
    - Now over to the Canon camcorder;
         - Use the IP address for the Mac as the FTP server. Port 21.
         - Set up username/password as for the Mac admin account (not sure if required though).
         - Target folder just set to "/" (files transferred directly to "Movies").
With this setup, both AVCHD/MP4 movies were transferred easily to my mac.
