Choosing a destination drive for captured files

Does anyone know if there's a way to change the destination drive when capturing using OLCS3? I have a mambo-big external Western Digital drive I'd like to use for long captures (meetings), but OLCS3 seems to default to drive C: and not provide any options to change that.
Any ideas would be helpful!
Thanks,

To quote Emily Litella: "Never mind!"
I just read the whole help section about "Managing projects and clips" and realized I could control this process much better than I thought.
If anyone got excited about finding the answer, it lies in the help system (duh, I should have looked there before posting).
Thanks for visiting this topic anyway :)

  • How can I use an external hard drive for capturing? I don't have enough mem

I'm new at this...I have a Powerbook G4 and not nearly enough memory for capturing a full size video. Is there some way to send it to an external hard drive- for capturing, then burn it in my laptop? Would that external hard drive have to have IDVD loaded on it?

    Hi artdrake
Just to add to the already good advice posted above.
Another possible approach which works for me, assuming the ext. FireWire HD is large and fast enough (I recommend at least 120GB and 7200rpm) is to format the the ext. HD as stated above (journaled) and then clone your existing startup volume (using Carbon Copy Cloner) to the ext. Hard Drive. This will circumvent installing a fresh OS as well as all the iLife apps to the ext. device. You will simply make an exact copy of your laptops HD to the ext. volume. It takes me all of 30-40 mins. on my G4 system to do this procedure whereas installing everything from scratch may take several hours.
Once this is completed and assuming the ext. drive is connected securely via Firewire, Restart the computer while holding down the option key. Select the ext. FW HD. Once your G4 laptop is booted to external drive, use it as you would the primary drive. The only difference is that you now have plenty of room to capture to or to burn a DVD. This saves you from consuming much needed HD space on the G4 laptop plus it also serves as a fully operative backup hard drive for your G4.
Hope this suggestion works as well for you as it does for me. Feel free to post back with additional questions/concerns.

  • Why can't use thunderbolt drive for Cloud files folder?

why can't I use thunderbolt drive for Cloud files folder?  It's too big for my limited laptop storage.
    Thanks

Because sync requires to use persistent storage locations. This is out of Adobe's control. It is entirely up to the hardware vendor how he anchors the drive/ volume and integrates it into the file and folder structure.

  • Is FCE 3.5 able to use a 2TB external hard drive for capture?

Having strange problems capturing on my newest (& biggest) external drive, a 2 TB G-raid.  Even if I set the G-raid as the only scratch drive, FCE captures to the Mac hard drive.  I am now getting past the midpoint of this drive's capacity, that is there's already about a terabyte of footage on it.  Is there an upper limit of drive size FCE will handle?
I've tried moving the newly-captured footage over to the G-raid in Finder and deleting it from the Mac HD but then get into difficulty with what seem to be spurious and intractable "media offline" messages.
Not sure if this is inherent in the software or if I maybe have a bad external drive (it's only about 9 months old.)  Or other possibilities?
I'm thinking about reformatting the big drive into 2 volumes - the footage is backed up on other drives - but that's a long run to reload all the data unless there's some likelihood it will work...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    ss

Thanks for input, Dick.  Connection has been via 800FW only.  It's been a frustrating 3 days, but I'm beginning to think drive/volume size was a red herring.  Not only is FCE 3.5 unable to deal with this drive, but Finder on the OS X 4.11 has been unwilling to do a simple transfer of its files to another drive. A 3-month-old clone of my boot drive worked exactly the same as the current version on these tasks, that is, not very well.
Right now I am moving ~650GB of the same video clips from my only working backup drive (a 750 GB 400FW Seagate FAP) to a 1TB USB drive converted from Windows format for the occasion.  Not for editing, just for a second backup...  It's chugging along slow & steady.
Time to talk to my friends at G-Tech.   I believe this drive is under 3-year warranty...   :-)

  • Using OS hard drive for captured footage??

Years back the rule was never to use your main hard drive, with both operating system and FCP, to store and access captured footage. Yesterday an instructor at a school that uses FCP was telling me they no longer follow that rule and use their IMAC's hard drive to capture footage, with no problems resulting. He claims that the systems are now so fast it's no longer a problem. Is this correct or is it still advised to capture all footage to separate drives?
    Thanks.

Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to answer my question. I think I've heard what I expected to hear.
I suppose the real reason I was interested in an answer to this question was because I expected it would help me decide whether to buy a new IMAC or MAC Pro for FCP use. I've decided my criteria for purchase should be which is the better computer for a five-year span of FCP use. Who knows what new things will be out then, and what new demands video technology and FCPwill be making on computers. This teaching friend was arguing in favour of an IMAC, saying with the cheaper investment I can just buy a new IMAC, with whatever the needed new specs are, when the time comes. The other argument suggests the MAC Pro has enough capacity to grow. Yet I remember my old G4; it could only max out with 1.5 GB Ram and then FCP went to Intel and made it obsolete. None of these changes were visible in the distance - to me at least - when I bought that machine. If I was to choose the IMAC route the main problem would be hard drive space. With only one Fire Wire 800 one would have to rely on a lot of daisy chaining. Hence my curiosity about possible use of the internal drive - as one can order up to 3 TB.
    Thanks again.

  • Time machine hard drive for transfering files from 2010 MBP to rMBP

    Hello!
I have a couple of questions here!
I will be getting the rMBP in the next few weeks so want to do a bit of housekeeping before transferring across.
    1) What is the best way to clear my current MBP of files and applications that i dont use and are just taking up space? I currently have a 256GB hard drive with 8GB free - there should be no reason for this as my large audio/ Raw photo/ video editing files are on an external hard drive. So i think there must be a lot of flotsam and jetsam on there that needs to be removed as i don't want to carry that from computer to computer!
    2) Is Time machine the best option for this kind of service?
    3) Can anyone recommend an external hard drive for the job? I don't want to rely on thunderbolt ones at the moment so would it just be any usb hard drive seeing as Apple has sodded of firewire?
    Cheers
    K*

    OK, I'll bite:
    1) you can just delete the documents that you don't use by throwing them in the Trash. To delete apps and all associated files (and some will disagree with me or suggest another application) I recommend using AppDelete. I believe it's $13 or so but I have used AppZapper and AppCleaner as well but find that AppDelete finds all associated files.
    2) After you've rid yourself of your 'junk' files, I recommend using Time Machine on a dedicated or partitioned hard drive for backups. When you get your new machine, you can just use Time Machine to restore all of your settings, apps, documents, etc. For everything you ever wanted to know about Time Machine, see  http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html.
    3) A USB drive is definitely the way to go. I would recommend the G-Drive series from Hitachi here. They have all sorts of connections, including USB 2.0 and Firewire 800. When Apple (finally) releases their Thunderbolt>FW800 adapter, you'll be ready. Others might recommend USB 3.0 drives for the speed but I've seen too many posts of, in particular, Western Digital USB 3.0 drives that have problems with the 2012 Macs to go the USB 3.0 route right now. Maybe someone will jump in and recommend a USB 3.0 drive that they actually have working on a 2012 MBP?
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Powershell script to search a network drive for .mdb files and export them to CSV file

    Hello all,
I'm trying to search one of our network drives for old .mdb files, I want to write the name, location and date last modified to a csv file.
    Get-WmiObject -Class CIM_DataFile -Filter "Drive='S:' And Extension='mdb'
     AND ObjFile.drive
     AND objFile.FileName
     AND objFile.FileSize
     AND objFile.LastWriteTime" |
    Export-CSV c:\mdb_search\mdbfiles.csv\
Obviously this isn't working or I wouldn't be posting.  I've tried many different examples from the net with no joy for now.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

    Thanks, that did the job.
    Cheers, you're welcome.
How do I get the powershell cursor to return to C:> ?
Should I use "exit" or "break" ?
Neither, the console will return to a prompt when the search has been completed.

  • External drive for capturing tapes

I'm finally getting around to capturing a lot of miniDV tapes laying around, and making some DVD's out of them.
My Panasonic PV-GS150 camcorder is connected to my MBP via firewire 6 pin to 4 pin cable.
Since my MPB is down to ~60 GB free, I want to use an external drive to store all the raw data. I have a WD Passport drive for that purpose. It's connected via USB and it comes up cleanly in Finder.
    Two questions --
    1) should I reformat the drive, presently at FAT32? I'm guessing yes.
    2) how can I configure iMovie to use this external drive? I didn't see anything in Preferences to do so.
    Thanks!

G-drive from Apple = rip off if you ask me. Apple simply charges way to much for stuff like that. $260 for a normal sized (not pocket drive) 500GB external drive is too much.
Example, while not Firewire 800 compatible, for $10 less, Frys.com has a Seagate FreeAgent Pro 1 TERABYTE drive with eSATA, USB2, and Firewire 400 (free shipping as well) and it comes with a 5-year warranty. So twice the storage for less money.
Or you could get a 500GB external drive with FW400 ports for about $100+ less than Apple wants and use the savings to buy a Firewire hub and STILL save money.
But you can also find other FW-800 compatible external drives for less than Apple at many places and since you have FW800 ports, you probably should take advantage of them. Lacie has a number of FW800 compatible drives, are a known Apple friendly company, and you can buy direct from them or through many third party retailers. A quick check shows a 500GB model with FW800 for $190 direct from them. Other vendors might sell it cheaper.
    Good luck,

  • Plug-in/driver for .cine file from Phantom 4k Flex?

I have playback but it's choppy at 1/4 of resolution. I was on the owners macbook pro and it was playing back at full resolution, with no render time needed.. I have looked everywhere, and the only option I see available is gluetools phantom cine toolkit: http://www.gluetools.com/products_phantom.html
Only issue is, it's $499, and I don't mind paying for it but I'm not sure it's going to fix the problem or make it better. I literally have to render everything for playback, and not sure if there is some sort of drivers/plug-ins I can install that will give me .cine file settings. I have to work off of HDV or RED sequence settings, and I know that's not the native format for the file type.
Any help would be great! I've been calling camera rental houses, reaching out to glue tools, vision research for the Phantom, and have been trying to get a hold of the owner of the camera!
Need help! I can edit, but at this pace, will take months to get a minute down, and if we had full resolution playback on a macbook pro I should be able to get full resolution playback on my Mac Pro!!!
    Thanks.

  • Using USB 3.0 drives for program files.

Can Adobe Creative Suite programs be loaded on an external USB 3.0 Drive not to be used by other computers but to increase the speed of data transfer--if you only have a 5400 RPM drive for instance?

That would still depend on your computer and whether or not it can actualyl achieve and sustain those data rates. Just because it's USB 3, it must by no means be faster. The USB port could revert to a slower transfer mode at any time, there could be other I/O operations on your system, otehr USB devices could sahre the same bus and minimize throughput and any number of otehr things. Also of course you would have to define the drive as a swap/ cache drive in the first place and that would not be possible if it is listed as a removable drive. Photoshop and other programs only use fixed drives, meaning your USB device would have to have a specific driver to bypass this and be listed as an internal drive. So while on paper it may seem liek a good idea, in practice it's much more complicated.
