Choosing a Macbook Pro '13 - standard or retina?

Hello,
I'm planning on buying a Macbook Pro '13 soon but I have a few questions I need to ask before I make a decision.
I'm buying a mbp because I really need a new computer and I'm mainly because I'm already thinking I'll probably need one when I start my master's degree which will probably involve editing video/image/sound.
Having that in consideration, I'm not sure which Macbook Pro would be best for me - the standard or the retina version.
On the pro-retina side there's the ssd memory which makes the computer much more fast. But it has a major disadvantage for me: the capacity is very low. Considering that I'll be working with videos and images, even the 256 GB ssd memory may not be enough for me (and I cannot afford the 512GB version).
I had people telling me to buy the standard version because even though it can be slower, it has a 500 GB hdd which is important for the use I'll be giving to the mcp and also, it is much cheaper which is good for me.
But my brother told me that it is better to "sacrifice" the capacity because ssd memories have a lot of advantages. He also said that I can then replace the optical drive with a second internal hard drive which could be the 500GB hhd. Is this true?
I have an external hard drive with plenty of capacity and my brother told me I could still edit my videos having the files there but I'm afraid that won't work very well.
I'm guessing that even if I can replace the optical drive with an hdd, the warranty would become void, right?
He also said that a 4GB RAM is no longer a good choice, so that is one more reason to go for the retina version which has a 8GB RAM.
Can anyone advise me on this? I really don't know what I should go for.
Thank you in advance

Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately, the portuguese apple store doesn't have anything on the refurbished MBP's page
I absolutely cannot afford the 15" because my budget is below 1500€ which is approximately the cost of the MBP Retina 13" (256 GB SSD).
You may be allowed to buy from a Spanish or French store, but I suggest you check the rules and policies.

For now, my external hard drive is a Western Digital Ultra 1TB with a USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 interface. Since I would spend all my budget on the MBP, I would have to stick with this hard drive for a while before I can buy a better one.
As long you find it adequate for your needs, it is not necessary to upgrade it.

would you mind to explain shortly what a Fusion drive is? How can you merge an internal drive with an external hard drive?
You may want to read this link Mac mini (Late 2012), iMac (Late 2012 and later): About Fusion Drive . A Fusion drive is a merged version of two drives, which Apple also calls CoreStorage. Typically, a faster drive (SSD) and a slower drive (HDD) is combined into a single 'logical volume' and the filesystem moves blocks of data between the SSD and HDD parts based on frequency of use and other factors. These two work in tandem to provide better performance. Apple officially does not support using an external drive as part of a Fusion Drive, But you can build one yourself, and newer versions (Mavericks and newer) automatically can detect a SSD/HDD combination and will create a Fusion drive, if both the drives are unused. It is also possible to manually create one between two drives. Please see http://blog.macsales.com/15617-creating-your-own-fusion-drive as an example.

And what do you mean by a good backup strategy? Backup for the video projects?
You want to maintain regular backups of your Mac and important files. The easiest method is to use Time Machine and an external drive. In your case, it will be a third drive and you can select what you want to back up from your Projects. Please see  Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac

my family decided to buy me a mac. i am a teenager and i liked the mac pro 13 inch (no retina display). But i am wondering if mac pro is good enough for usual personal uses (no professional). is that mac good at games (ex SIMS)? are 13 inch ok or its too small? thanks in advance

Buy extra RAM from a reputable Mac-friendly store with a lifetime exchange warranty like Crucial.com, macsales.com, etc. I've been getting mine from macsales.com for years.
For gaming, the 13" might not be the best solution. I am not a gamer, but games today tend to want a nice graphics card. The problem with the 13" is that the graphics (Intel HD Graphics 4000) are integrated with the CPU, not a separate graphics card, and also use up some of the system RAM because integrated graphics do not have their own memory. Check the graphics card requirements on all the games you want to play, and get feedback from online gaming forums as to how well the 13" Intel HD Graphics 4000 performs for the games you want to play. (The 15" MacBook Pro also has an a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M dedicated graphics card with 512MB or 1GB of its own graphics memory, and most gamers would vastly prefer this.)
If you exclude gaming, the 13" is definitely more than good enough for personal uses. It's also appropriate for some professional uses.

  • Macbook pro mid 2012 no retina performance drop after efi

Hi, mi macbook pro mid 2012 no retina after efi update the performance are too slow, thats is the same problem with retina, please fix it, in osx mountain lyon the aplications that used every daywith video is poor, in bootcamp with games is the same problem, the cpu clock drops from3.3 ghz to 1.2 ghz or more. Waiting for a mew efi update bescause my mac is the same that a macbook air

No Apple hasn't officially stated anything about this issue. After I updated to EFI Update 2.0 I noticed the issues and started doing my research and found people in the Macrumors forums having the same problems and eventually I was reading that users that didn't update yet weren't seeing the update in their updates meaning Apple pulled the update from the servers. Other users reported after calling Applecare that they were aware of the issue.

  • Help me choose a Macbook Pro

Hey everyone, I need some help in choosing which Macbook Pro is right for me.
Basically I'm wondering which of these 2 would be a better choice.

    What are the main differences?
4gb of ram should be sufficient and I doubt I would ever upgrade to 8gb.
as for graphics, I would mostly only need a mac that would allow me to play the latest Sims games. the first has a graphics memory of 512 and the second has 256.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Internal drive for Macbook Pro 13 inch with Retina display from late 2013?

Hi everyone. After some water spillage to my new computer, the guys at the Apple Store have told me that my internal hard drive needs to be replaced. No other damage was done, thankfully. I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch with Retina Display from late 2013. The Apple genius said my current hard drive has flash storage, and that my new hard drive will need that as well as the computer requires it. Does anyone know where I can buy such a hard drive? Is it possible to buy it from Apple? I am happy to buy online or in a store (I live in Australia). Also, is this Mac Pro model difficult to take apart? I'd like to install the hard drive myself.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

  • My Macbook Pro 15-inch with retina display crashes sometimes when connected to an external monitor

My almost-new Macbook Pro 15-inch with retina display goes black and shuts down sometimes when connected to my external monitor. (The first time it did this was when connected to a projector.) They have replaced the motherboard but it still happens sometimes. The computer and monitor both come back on after a few seconds.

  • HT204384 SD Card will not mount on Macbook Pro Mid 2012 (non-retina), tried everything

I am trying to use a PNY 4GB SD Card on my Macbook Pro Mid-2012 (non-retina), but I cannot get it to mount or for the Macbook to even see it's there.  I read some people had success slightly pulling it out, pushing it in faster, cleaning the port, etc. which I have tried all of these, but to no avail.
    Anybody have an idea?
    Thanks,

Had problems reading SD cards after a Mountain Lion update. Try this XQuartz solution that fixed this for me. I'm using a 13" MBP mid-2012. All you have to do is install this programme and re-insert your SD card.
XQuartz no longer comes with new Macbooks, only X11.
See this support page from Apple on where you can download XQuartz.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5293?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
You can download Xquartz directly from here:
    http://xquartz.macosforge.org/landing/
This should be the most up to date version. If not check for updates once you have downloaded it.
Simply re-insert your SD card and voila!

  • MacBook Pro (summer 2012) non-retina display and SSD upgrade?

Looking to upgrade to a SSD in my MacBook Pro (summer 2012) non-retina display. Are there ones that work better in a MacBook Pro?

In theory at least, any SSD will work fine. There are some additional considerations to make, however. It mostly revolves around updating the drive's firmware. Many SSD companies do not offer Mac-friendly ways to perform this procedure. From the list Clinton provided, you can drop Corsair and Samsung immediately for this reason.
I would not consider OWC, Intel, or any SSD that uses a Sandforce chipset because of spotty reliability. Yes, improvements have been made, but I still do not trust them. Of the dozens of SSDs I've owned and deployed over the last 2-3 years, the only ones to need replacement were ones with Sandforce.
That leaves Crucial, Plextor, and OCZ. The former two basically use the same Marvell chipset. While I can't speak for Plextor, Crucial's firmware updates are OS agnostic. You simply down an .iso file, burn it to CD, boot from that disc, and perform the update. It works perfectly on a Mac. Doing a quick check of Plextor's support site, it seems the proedure is the same.
For OCZ, I'm only focusing on the Vector and Vertex 4. The former is brand new, having just hit the market within the last couple weeks. If you're looking to buy right now, I would stick with the Vertex 4 as it's a more proven commodity. OCZ has created a suite of tools that you copy to a USB flash drive. You can boot from it, and it takes you to what I think is a very heavily modified Linux distribution. From there, you can do a firmware update, check drive health, and perform a SATA secure erase to return the drive to its "out of the box" state. To get the most from the tools, you should have a USB mouse plugged in. Also, firmware updates require the use of a hard-wired Ethernet cable; you can't use wireless.
Bottom line - for an SSD upgrade, stick with Crucial, Plextor, or OCZ as they are the most Mac-friendly (aside from original Apple parts, of course).

  • MacBook Pro with 13-inch Retina Display RAM Failure?

    Hi there!
I just bought a new MacBook Pro with 13-inch Retina Display on Christmas at an Apple Retail Store, and I was experiencing some lag.  The lag occurred when creating simple graphical animations, like swiping to reveal Mission Control.  So I took it in.  The diagnostics were fine, so they said that they'd try and repair it.  After a few days, I got a call and they told me that I have bad RAM.  And being a computer freak, I understand that it is part of the lo-bo.  Now they have to order an entirely new logic board, and I have to wait even longer.
For $1700, that was disappointing.  Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Well, I was told that nobody in the Apple Retail Store had seen this specific problem before.  I couldn't find anything on the Internet either.  I wanted to know if there was someone else who's MacBook Pro with 13-inch Retina Display's Hynix RAM slowed down graphical performance, because it sounds odd.  I am aware that defects are common, but this seems, again, particularly queer.

  • How can I tell the MacBook Pro with 13-in retina that I purchase is the late 2013 model from the box?

I'm wondering how I can tell the differences between the late 2013 model and the early 2013 model of MacBook Pro with 13-inch retina from the box?

You can enter the serial number in the appropriate field on a web site such as this and it will tell you what model it is:

When you order a MBP you can have it delivered at any Apple retail store.  When you get the e-mail that the MBP is ready to be picked up, you have options to enter in the rersponse if you or someone else will pick it up.  You will have to fill in some required information that will identify that person to the store personnel.
I had my last MBP delivered to the local store, but I picked it up.
    Ciao.

What cable are you using to hook up to the ROG Swift? I just bought a Cable Matters® Gold Plated Mini DisplayPort (Thunderbolt™ Port Compatible) to DisplayPort Cable, but it doesn't seem to be working. Do I need to get a driver or something?
