Choosing a monitor calibration tool

I realize this topic has been discussed before - but the products do get updated and change periodically, so I am asking for advice here on the current state of opinion - I am looking to calibrate dual Appple 23" monitors that work side by side.
They are pretty close right out of the box, but to improve things I have been considering the Monaco XR or XR Pro, ColorEyes & Eye One Display 2.
I imagine they all do a decent job of calibration, though I read somewhere that calibrating 2 monitors is not run of the mill for all calibrators.

I used the Monaco for several months before buying the Eye-One Photo. It worked well for the monitor calibration, although I didn't find that it was as especially good at matching my laptop screen to my Apple Cinema Display. The real problem for me was the method Monaco uses for calibrating the printer. I was not reliably able to print what I saw on my screen. Therefore, I bit the bullet and got the spectrophotometer (Eye-One Photo), which has done a very good job with both monitors and printer. While the Eye-One Photo measures the printer output (the print) directly, the Monaco relies on a scanner to tell it what the print looks like. This "indirect" measurement (necessary because it is not a spectrophotometer) led to inconsistent and inaccurate printer profiles.

Hi,
We are on a photo production right now and I have to work on pictures with my MBP. Bought a 23 Cinema to have more space to work but can't get a calibration tool. Is there any "good" software tool available beside the Apple built in tool??
What would you recommend to do while we are on the road??

I have used several software calibration tools and find that they are not worth the trouble.
IMO you will do better to let color adjust by the numbers. (i.e. R=G=B is white, gray, black). Also if you make an bit of an effort you will adapt to your monitor.
The adaptability of a human viewer is why things don't look green to you in a flourescent lighting environment. It also makes software calibrations very spotty.
The Apple monitors have some limitations in the LUT (look up table). Most calibrations (even hardware calibrations) wind up shifing your white-point to a warmer balance (a good thing) but at the same time they reduce shadow detail visible (a very bad thing) because they reduce the number of shades/colors that the monitor can display.
A really good package won't try to calibrate your Apple monitor (calibrate means to change), instead it will profile your monitor (profile means to describe).
If you want to try software calibration don't spend too much on your package. You probably won't want to use it for long. My advice is stick to the Apple profiles until you can get a good hardware profiling package.
P.S. If you search this forum you will find some early problems that some users had with Aperture not property interpreting some types of profiles. I recall probelms in v1.1 with large profiles from Gretag Macbeth Profile Maker 5. There may be others

Recommended color calibrator/monitor calibration tool?

Hi all,
It is a few years since I have purchased a color calibrator for my monitor and need to purchase a new one now at the new company I am at. It will be for my 30" Apple Cinema Display. As usual, I always come straight to these forums for your advice FIRST before making my selection.
In the past I have used both GretagMacbeth's Eye-One Display and the Pantone Huey. I have not tried the Colorvision Spyder.
Of course, these have each changed and been improved since I last worked with them, so can you make some recommendations as to which you feel may work best for you, and can thus recommend to me?

I use a MacBook Pro. 15" And Aperture. What units are folks using to calibrate their monitors?

6500 white point and 2.2 gamma are recommended.
There are two principles to understand -
1. Always purchase a proper spectrophotometer, not a mere colorimeter. The spectral radiation curves for different types of emittive devices are unsurprisingly different. CRT's are different from LCD's and LCD's are different from LED's. These differences are better captured by a spectrophotometer, whereas a colorimeter is optimised and the difficulty is that what it is optimised for is not documented. The X-Rite Monitor Optimiser was a colorimeter, and it worked OK for CRT's but not for LCD's when they came along. The GretagMacbeth Spectrolino and Eye-One could capture the spike red spectral curve in LCD's better. Today, the discussion is whether a colorimeter works well with the green in LED's but I don't follow this except out of the corner of an eye.
2. As long as you have a colour display, calibrated to a stable condition, and characterised in an ICC type MNTR Monitor profile, you can set the white point and gamma to what you want since the ICC framework will match through the D50 illuminant Profile Connection Space virtually. The difficult part is not the ICC framework, which is based on a mathematical model of the illuminant, but how you set up your studio lighting and studio viewing box which are physical light sources and not mathematical illuminants. The original idea is that you set up your studio light sources to 5000 - 5500 Kelvin along the lines of the D50 illuminant, but there are as many theories as there are colour consultants.

Easy-to-Use Monitor Calibration Tool From Pantone

I received my Pantone Huey today for color calibration. It's a great little tool.
Pantone Huey works fine if you remember to select the right applications at the Finish of the calibration. I initially had chosen the wrong settings and the colors were strange. But after running the Huey program again and checking Design applications it works beautifully.
The colors on screen now match the Pantone paper swatches really well.
So, I thought I should say Pantone Huey definitely works.

LCD Monitor Calibration Needed

I just purchased a 3rd party 19" LCD monitor, and noticed the the thing is freaking bright!
I need to calibrate this thing before it melts my eyes. I'm looking for either a tutorial on how to properly do this, or a program that will help me with this.
Any help is greatly appricated. Thanks!

if you've got the money for something worthwhile, the sypder2pro is an excellent monitor calibration tool. it calibrates crt's, lcd's and projectors. it actually allows me to use my 23" cinema display by removing most of the "pink" that the screen evolved to right after it went off of warranty, making it the most overpriced lemon i ever bought ($1799 before taxes).

Severe color issues in CS5, EizoCG245W monitor, calibrated...help!

Hi!
I'm working with an entirely new system here from the ground up. New computer with Windows 7, Eizo ColorEdge CG245W monitor and Photoshop CS5 (I had previously been using CS3 on my old system/monitor). Everything was hooked up within the last couple of days and PS installed as well.
The problem I am having is that when I open an image in PS, it is severely dull and desaturated looking (esp in the reds, yellows and oranges).
The "color settings" I am using are correct for the lab I print at. I am using sRGB.
Thing is, when I view the image in My Pictures or on the Web (IE or Firefox) or in Microsoft Office Picture Manager....the image looks correct and the same as my lab test prints.
But if I view the image in either CS5 or Windows Photo Viewer, I get that horrible dull/desaturated look.
I should mention as well that my monitor is calibrated...I did that yesterday upon getting everything hooked up. When I am in CS5 and choose "Assign Profile"...if I choose the monitor profile generated by the calibrator (mine is CG245W (22547100) Photography, Graphic Design) then the image looks correct and all of the colors are saturated nicely. But, obviously, I cannot choose this as my working space or color profile!!!
What is going on? It's almost as if there is a problem with Windows not recognizing the calibrated profile or something...but I am unable to fix this and I NEED it fixed asap!!!

Is it possible that what you perceive as "correct" is actually oversaturated?
I'm not familiar with that monitor... Is it a wide gamut monitor? If so, you'd expect sRGB to look less saturated than the same images displayed in non-color-managed applications.
You do realize that images displayed in IE 8 and earlier, and many other photo viewing applications, are not displayed through a color-management system, right? These are not color-managed applications. Photoshop is. Also, assigning the monitor profile to your image essentially shuts color management off.
What you're saying is essentially that you like what you see when color is not managed.
Assuming no unexpected glitch, such as a bad profile, all seems to hinge on what color space the monitor is delivering, and whether it was delivering that same color when calibrated.
How did you calibrate/profile it, specifically?

Calibration tool for 24" LED Display

Greetings, I'm currently using the 24" display with my MacBook Pro and am looking for calibration tool recommendations. I went to the Apple store and they sold me the Huey Pro from Pantone. I haven't opened it yet as I saw it had mixed reviews. It also says it's for CRT's and LCD's. Has anyone tried it on the 24" LED monitor? Successes/failures appreciated.

Brightness and Contrast settings are both dictated by ambient light in the room. There is no set point, and so day and night modes are used for this reason. For this properly setup, you need to use a test pattern which shows the greyscale detail and increments from black to white. Typically "pluge" or blinking patterns are used as well.
After setting those up, you DO NOT want ambient light present when using your meter. Meter's don't have peripheral vision like we do to compensate for room lighting tones... therefore, either work in the dark, or drape something over the sensor & screen.

HP 23xi IPS monitor calibration help

Hi All,
So I have a HP 23xi 23" monitor i've been using for less than a year. Suddenly today my hyperlinks became very hard to discern from dark blue and seems almost black as if it's just regular text. I have not had this problem until today when I was reading a Wiki page and some of the links seemed to turn black. They are hyperlink and are the links that I have already clicked on so it should turn from light blue to the dark blue but it now seems as if it's closer to black. How do I change this back to normal again and what the heck caused this?
I connected my computer to my old monitor and on that the colors seem fine as I can discern the blue, dark blue and black fonts but back on the HP the dark blue is like a black. I also installed the calibration tool from the CD but I can't find anything on there to help adjust it so that the dark blue is different from the black.
This monitor was working fine until today. Nothing new done to the computer today except 1 windows definition update. Could that have caused this problem? I have updated the driver for the monitor as well to the latest 2013 Jan version.

Best way to calibrate any monitor is with a calibration tool from places like X-Rite or Datacolor. There are others if I recall correctly.

Is monitor calibration the same as setting color profile in System Preferences Monitor Color?

I understand monitor calibration using something llike X-Rite or Gretag, but what about the sRGB/Adobe RGB/Generic thing in System preferences>Monitor>Color? Is the latter for printing purposes? What should I select when doing post processing on Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop Elements?

Yes your Display Profile will slightly affect your finished product, but if that RGB profile is working for you then don't try and fix it. However if you do professional or semi professional work, then you might want to consider using professional calibration tools to calibrate your display.

Help with monitor calibration - simulating NTSC on computer monitor

I know the proper way to monitor video is using an external NTSC production monitor. Since I don't have one I'm wondering how I can get the closest to simulating an NTSC monitor on my Apple Cinema Display. I have made a monitor calibration using gamma 1.4 that seems pretty good except the shadow areas are too dark. If I can resist the temptation to lighten the dark areas, based on what I see on my computer monitor, my results look pretty good on a TV played from a DVD. If there was some way I could set up my Cinema Display to be closer to an NTSC monitor it would help me a lot. Any ideas?
As a related question: If my video project is not destined for TV but played on a laptop and shown on a screen using a projector maybe I can use my computer monitor as more of a guide to what it will look like on screen.
Another related question: How do the modern flat screen TVs relate to the older CRT variety in terms of calibration. Do the new flat screens still use the same NTSC calibration? The flat screens seem more like computer monitors to me.

If the program won't be viewed on TV, using the computer monitor should be fine ... but keep in mind that Windows system's use a different gamma.

They aren't. They are designed to reproduce the NTSC/ATSC color space and gamma. However, like most later model consumer CRTs, flat panel TVs have built-in circuitry designed to artificially enhance/correct the image. That's the primary reason to use a professional monitor, be it a flat panel or an older CRT.

MXO Calibration tool bug...and a fix

Last June Matrox posted this warning in their forums:

Please note that this does not effect calibration profiles made prior to Quicktime 7.5, we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and urge you to check back regularly for any updates regarding this matter

This only effects the Proc Amp monitor calibration of computer monitors like the Apple or Dell. All the other functions operate normally.
Now...because I don't read those forums, this snuck under my radar. It apparently has been an issue all summer.
I blogged about the issue (www.lfhd.net) and received a bug fix from Matrox today. That can be downloaded here. This fixes the calibration bug with QT 7.5.

If i have it use the calibrated profile by changing the color management settings, the color picker no longer shows true white or black. How do I get elements 12 to honor the new calibrated settings?

Ok so I've done what you said and this is what it's come back ....
I don't know that these are the errors , but they're the things which don't look right ...
Throughout the shut down there is a recurring line ;
It says ;
Com.apple.launchd 1 0x100600e70.anonymous.unmount 301 PID still valid
Then there are 2 more which I think are related ;
Com.apple.securityd 29 PID job has I overstayed its welcome , forcing removal.
Then the same with fseventd 48 and diskarbitrationd 13
Oh and on Launchd1 : System : stray anonymous job at shut down : PID 301 PPID13 PGID 13 unmount...
Then the last process says "about to call: reboot (RB_AUTOBOOT).
Continuing...
And stops ...
