Choosing a monitor-checklist

After my last Mac Mini died, I ordered an iMac as replacement, but I can't keep it. An unholy combination of a damaged neck, bifocals and lack of vertical adjustment (the iMac and me both) makes it very uncomfortable for me. Instead I'm getting the new Mac Mini. But after a just a few days with the iMac screen, my old 17" Iiyama seems a bit poky. So I'm thinking of treating myself to a new monitor, maybe 19" or 20", with a brilliant, iMac-like screen and (of course) vertical adjustment.
Using the Personal Computer World UK website as a guide, I've produced a checklist:
Response time: 2ms, 3ms, 5ms
The faster the better, I suppose, but I don't know if it makes much difference.
Loudspeakers: Yes, certainly, by all means.
3D: No.
Full HD: Definitely.
HDMI: Definitely.
DVI: Not necessary if I have HDMI?
IPS: ?
Widescreen: Not sure. Might be pushing my luck with the neck, but I have a feeling that some of the goodies may only come in widescreen format.
I'd appreciate any comments on this list and/or any recommendations of particular monitors.
Michael.

Before you go to that extreme, consider putting your iMac on a mount
http://www.imacmount.com/
If none of those solutions suffice, make sure any display you get has at least 1920 x 1080 in a 1080p resolution and HDMI 1.3.

  • Choosing a monitor for my mac pro

I purchased a 2.8 mac pro (Jan) with a 8800GT graphics card. It would be short sighted of me to choose a monitor that can't take advantage of the card. That is to say, I need a monitor that can display 1920 x 1200. But I do not want a 24 inch screen. Too big! 20 inches would be better but I'll be darned if I can find a display that size with that resolution. Where do I go from here? Do I start looking at CRT's instead of LCD monitors? I do a lot of video and graphics work so resolution is key. Recommendations are most welcome. TIA!

    John,
You may think that a 24 inch display is too big, but it is not. I have a 24 inch monitor and I place the dock on the right side of the screen. This allows my applications to have more window height, which is good for applications such as Safari. Having a wider screen also allows me to place different application windows next to each other. The other advantage, as you have already noted, is that you can display the higher resolution you want. And widescreen movies look pretty darn good too.
I work with photographs and I'm starting to get involved in video, so the screen resolution and the color accuracy are very important to me. That's why I chose Ezio monitors. They are more expensive but well worth it. And I can tell you without a doubt that working with Final Cut Express on a larger monitor makes all the difference in the world.
Previously, I owned a 20 inch CRT monitor, but it had to go in for repairs. Since CRTs are not being made that much anymore, repair parts for mine could not be found. So I had to buy myself a new monitor. After buying my current monitor I am so glad that my old CRT monitor broke. I tried working on a friends 30 inch monitor, but I believed the 30 inch was too wide for me. But I will say one thing, it was gorgeous.
    Good luck.

  • Can I choose which monitor is my "second Monitor' if I have more then 2?

I have four monitors. A 23" Late 2005 Apple Cinema HD, 2 20" DVI Apple Cinema Displays, and a Panisonic TY-42tm6d. I would like to be able to choose the monitor I want my veiwer to be on but FCPX always chooses one I don't want to use. I miss being able to seperate and relocate the individual windows of FCP. Am I missing something or is this a backward move for FCPX?

    Sorry Chris
I had no idea what I was talking about. So far my syncing has only occurred from iTunes to my iPhone through wifi or USB for PDF files. I want to know if iBooks has the capability to upload PDF to the cloud so I can download and delete files on the go like I can with the kindle app. If I can't do this with iBooks I'll be uploading all my digital content to amazon and saying goodbye to iBooks for reading pdfs.

  • I need help choosing a monitor! PLEASE HELP!

I getting a brand new mac mini from ebay and i am deciding between a 15-inch or a 14-inch LCD display. I was just wondering, if both of the displays have a resolution of 1024 x 768, is that the pixel count too? so does that mean the pixels on the 15-inch are just bigger or something? i need to know because the 14-inch LCD is $40 cheaper than the 15 inch....Thanks everyone!
also, since i've already decided on getting an apple keyboard, do you think the mighty mouse is really worth $49? i like to stick with apple products so that's why I'm wondering.
    ~CHRIS~

It doesn't necessarily mean the pixels themselves are bigger or smaller. It could also be the dot pitch (or distance between pixels) is bigger or smaller. If the native resolution is 1024x768 then you are correct, there are physically 1024x768=786,432 pixels. A 15" screen with the same resolution as a 14" screen may appear slightly less sharp but objects will appear larger. It's a tradeoff. Generally I would choose the larger monitor just because it is easier on the eyes when reading small print, etc.
    Hope that helps,

  • Is it possible to choose which monitor my viewer displays on?

I mainly compose music and have to do some basic editing.  For my music setup with Logic Pro X I have 3 20" monitors and then one 42" tv.
When I open FCPX I'd like to have the Event Display on my TV which is connect via HDMI on my Mac Pro.
Even though in prefs I have that HDMI Device selected under "Playback-->A/V Output" the relevant picture shows up on one of my smaller monitors and there is no way to drag it over to any other monitor.
I apologize if I am not using the right nomenclature for all of this, video is not my main thing.
I am running OS X 10.9.5 on a brand new Mac Pro.  FCPX version 10.1.3
Thank you in advance for any help!

Do you mean you want the Event browser show up in the TV? Then you DON't want to set it as "Playback-->A/V Output"! Setting it this way will make it show in full screen what is displayed in the viewer.
First, set Playback-->A/V Output to none (or to one of the other monitors if that is possible - I suppose it is not).
Then choose Window->Show Events on second display. (Since there is more than one, it may take a little fiddling to get it to choose the right one...)

  • Cannot choose another monitor!

Hi, having a Macbook air from 2011 and the most updated version of OSX. Using med MBA at work with different beamer. Some weeks ago I should use a beamer i a hotel. No auto finding and I couldn't choose to find external monitor. Thought it may be due a brand new beamer. Yesterday same problem, but this time with a beamer I used before. Didn't try it in between. Is there some way to resolve my monitor botton?

  • Photoshop CS5 still chooses wrong monitor profile in dual monitor case?

The folk lore has it that if you go to EDIT/COLOR SETTINGS and open the Working Spaces RGB drop down, then what it says near the top on the "Monitor RGB" line is the monitor profile that photoshop is actually using.
If that is true, then I would expect that if I run photoshop on my monitor 1 it would show the profile of monitor 1, and if I run PS on monitor 2 it would show the profile of monitor 2. But in fact, it always shows the profile of monitor 1. Naturally, this creates anxiety that PS is using the wrong profile to display my images, since I normally run with the image on monitor 2.
My setup: Windows 7 64-bit, PS 12.0.1 x64. Matrox M9120 graphics card driving two monitors. Windows CONTROL PANEL/COLOR MANAGEMENT shows a different profile active on each monitor.
(By running photoshop on a particular monitor, I mean I run photoshop, drag it in non-full screen mode to the desired monitor, and close it. Then I run it again and it starts on that monitor (including the splash screen).)

    PeterFacey wrote:
Emil, Sorry, I disagree. It relates entirely to how Photoshop handles profiles, not how the operating system does.
Windows operating system doesn't handle color profiles at all, but it provides all programs that do with the same way to handle them. If you have the color profiles of your monitors installed properly in the system, they will be equally available to all programs. If a program can use properly one color profile for one monitor it will do the same with more.
    PeterFacey wrote:
I also have CorelDraw which is a colour managed application. If I set that straddling two monitors, do you think it will use the appropriate monitor profile for each half? I don't know, ...
I don't have CorelDraw and don't know if it is color managed, but if it is and if the color management on your system is working properly it should give you the same result as Photoshop. Just go ahead and check it - open the same image in Photoshop and in CorelDraw and make a screen capture then measure the RGB values in Photoshop or any program that displays the RGB numbers of colors. But have in mind that a screen capture from multiple monitors that share the desktop will capture the entire shared desktop on one image (if monitors are different sizes it will leave blank areas around the smaller one depending on the alignment), but the same colors will be the same on the entire screen capture using the effect from the color profile only of your main monitor. So if you want to measure how the other monitor displays the RGB color values of the same color, you have to change it  to your main monitor in your system in order to have the screen capture with the effect of that monitor's color profile.
On my computer using Windows 7, all color managed programs show the same colors on one or more monitors. Along with the color managed programs from Adobe like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and AfterEffects, the other color managed programs like Windows Explorer, Windows Media Player, Firefox, QuickTime, etc also show the same RGB values of a color from each program on a certain monitor.
Basically, if the color management is working properly, the same color displayed from all color managed programs should look the same or as close as possible on each monitor, but when you capture the screen and measure the RGB values they should be different on each monitor unless the monitors are physically identical which is unreal.

  • Choose Primary monitor in 2 Monitor setup

Not a biggy but a personal preference. I've been working with the Grid open on the secondary monitor, and Develop on the primary monitor.
I'd actually prefer to have the Grid on my left, and Develop on my right.
This would be doable if there were an option to switch the primary and secondary lightroom screens between the two monitors.
    Paul Wasserman

    Just an opinion...
It would be easier for the user if we could "swap" the screens in dual monitor mode, as we can "swap" images while in compare mode (1 click).
    Compared to:
    1. Minimizing each screen
    2. Dragging each screen to the other monitor, and then
    3. Maximizing each screen...
every time we want to change the information being viewed in dual monitor mode (which, for some, may be quite often).
While this may seem like a small issue, sometimes it's the small issues that can make a difference :-)

  • How to choose which monitor displays "full screen preview"

I have a dual monitor setup and have Bridge configurated so that on the left monitor I have the panes "maps", "filter", "keywords" and "content" and on the right monitor (which is a better and callibrated monitor) I have the pane "preview".
Now if I select one or more tumbnails in the "content" pane on the left monitor, they show up in the "preview" pane on the right monitor.
Until recent, when I selected a single tumbnail in the "content" pane (left monitor) it showed up in the "preview" pane (right monitor) and upon hitting the space bar it was shown full screen on the same right monitor and upon left-click on the full screen immage, I got a 100% preview, again still on the right monitor.
Now the problem is that suddenly, upon hitting the space bar, the full screen preview is no longer shown on the right monitor but is shown on the left monitor. (Same problem for the 100% preview).
I hope I made clear of myself and that anyone knows how I can change this back again?

The window was indeed expanded to both monitors and the monitors were aranged correctly but upon your sugestion I temporarely switched everything back to default "one monitor setup" and then back to "two monitor with extended window". I also did a reset of my workspace as sugested.
The result is that everything is back and working as it shood. Problem is solved.
    Thank you very much.

  • Choosing a monitor calibration tool

I realize this topic has been discussed before - but the products do get updated and change periodically, so I am asking for advice here on the current state of opinion - I am looking to calibrate dual Appple 23" monitors that work side by side.
They are pretty close right out of the box, but to improve things I have been considering the Monaco XR or XR Pro, ColorEyes & Eye One Display 2.
I imagine they all do a decent job of calibration, though I read somewhere that calibrating 2 monitors is not run of the mill for all calibrators.

I used the Monaco for several months before buying the Eye-One Photo. It worked well for the monitor calibration, although I didn't find that it was as especially good at matching my laptop screen to my Apple Cinema Display. The real problem for me was the method Monaco uses for calibrating the printer. I was not reliably able to print what I saw on my screen. Therefore, I bit the bullet and got the spectrophotometer (Eye-One Photo), which has done a very good job with both monitors and printer. While the Eye-One Photo measures the printer output (the print) directly, the Monaco relies on a scanner to tell it what the print looks like. This "indirect" measurement (necessary because it is not a spectrophotometer) led to inconsistent and inaccurate printer profiles.

  • Choosing a Monitor

    Everyone,
I just finished watching a "Color" tutorial on line that said you can not attach an external video monitor via fire wire while color correcting.
I don't have a monitor now, but I'd love to get one in the future. Can someone please let me know what I need to do in order to make this work with my set up?
    Thanks,
    Trey

    Trey,
For your iMac you're left with one option; Matrox MXO to Apple Cinema Display.
This has been talked about to almost nauseating detail, please peruse the Color board. What you'll also find is the iMac is extremely unwieldy to use Color very effectively; this is due to it's abject lack of expansion beyond a single firewire bus. Color really likes 2 displays, a hot video card and another input/output card such as an Aja Kona or Blackmagic Decklink product. Previewing within the application itself is almost worthless for any sort of critical judgement.

  • Need Advice on Choosing Reference Monitors / Amp'd Speakers

I'm a guitarist, have a G5 with Garageband, and an M-Audio USB interface. I don't play in a band, just scew around with Garageband at home in my office. I would like to be able to sell my amp and just use Garageband and my Mac as my "amp". The powered speaker system that I currently have, Altec Lansing with two satellite speakers and a sub in a wooden cabinet, sounds wonderful and is very loud when playing music through iTunes etc... but they just don't have the balls for guitar work. I'd like to replace them with some type of powered studio / reference monitors so that my guitar playing sounds good and I can really crank it up and get LOUD - like if I had say a Line6, or similar amp modeling box running through a small PA system. I don't want to spend alot of money, and I'd like something that will kill both birds (playing my guitar, and just general music listening) with one stone. I don't want to buy a seperate amp to power the monitors either. Does anyone make something like this, does anyone else here do this at home? I'm not up on this stuff, and don't know what the differences are (if any) between studio monitors, reference monitors, and the like. I just want to be able to use Garageband as my guitar amp and get loud.
One major factor that I notice in sound quality, is that the powered computer speaker systems that have the speakers mounted in wooden cabinets sound considerably better than those with plastic enclosures. Much fuller and warmer... I'd prefer speakers in wooden cabs vs. plastic if possible.
Thanks for taking the time to read / respond!

    hey there,
ther are lots of options for studio monitors. how much do you plan to spend? "project-studio" type monitors start around $300.00/pr. & go up to about $1200.00/pr. Pro monitors start around $1600.00/pr. & go to $3,000.00+/pr.
i have a pr. of Alesis M-one MKii. i wouldn't use monitors w/ less than a 6.5 inch woofer & 60 watt amp to drive it. check out your local pro audio/music store.
    good luck.
