Choosing an external display

I have a 15" MBP. It's the model BEFORE the unibody MBPs came out. So, it has a DVI port. I'm looking to buy an external flat screen monitor for use with it. Main uses will be daily work as well as for viewing movies.
I'd like some advice as to what specs to look for. I think between 21 - 24" will be fine. I live in Brazil and the two most common brands here are Samsung and LG for monitors. I don't need anything extra like built-in speakers. Just something basic with good image quality, etc..
I should mention that I may upgrade my laptop to a new MBP soon, but I'm assuming an adapter will take care of whatever port differences there are?
Any advice would be very welcome!

When I close the lid of my MacBook Pro for an external display apple chooses a resolution that isn't compatible with my display can I choose the resolution when the lid is open in any way of my external display for the mode when the lid is closed?

Hi there, I had a similar problem and was unable to resolve it. I spent about an hour on the phone with a very helpful AppleCare rep who was also completely stuck. It would seem that the only solution is to choose a setting with trial and error while the lid is closed.
My MacBook ended up getting stuck on a closed-lid reoslution that wasn't supported, so I had to do a screen-share with another device to see what the video card was sending to the external display and change it back that way.

Choosing External Display

I'm new here and hope you will forgive me for posting a question that I am sure has been discussed before. I'm in a real hurry though...
I have an iBook G4 1.2Mhz, 12", running OS 10.3.9
Since I started with photography as a serious hobby, the display has been a major frustration. It is just way too small, difficult to edit pictures on it. So I would love a larger external display, and now I was asked to wish for a specific one (as a GIFT!:), but real quickly! Problem is, I need an LCD-display, don't have space for a CRT.
Somebody told me that my only option is getting a new computer! That can't be the only option... Is there a way for me to, safely and successfully, use e.g. a 20.1" NEC widescreen display? Or, is my only option going for a 15" NEC with the same resolution as the built in display (1024 x 768)? It is of course important that the quality of what it displays, is good, since we're talking image editing.

PS! I really don't know anything about these things. I have used 8 PB's and this iBook since 1992, but never really learned about how to deal with things like this. So I hope you can bear with me in my ignorance. I'm real scared of doing anything that may harm my iBook, or something like that. Saw that there is a software you can use (spinning something?), but it seemed risky...

iBook 12" G4 1.2Ghz Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I thought I had checked the info carefuly enough before I got my wife a ViewSonic VX912 TFT monitor, but noooooo. I now realize that I had to use the hack to get higher resolutions.
My question is, how did you get the 1280 x 1024 to fill the screen? I had it @ 1280 x 1024, but the image was centered on the monitor with lots of black around it. And actually now I cannot even pick the 1280 x 1024. I can only go to 1152 x 870...no idea why though.
Any help would be appreciated. My wife uses the computer to work on her doctorate and the text is so fuzzy. I feel bad as it was me that said it would help her eyes getting this monitor :/

External display... just doesn't work

Hi all,
I have been scouring forums for this problem, but it seems to be relatively uncommon, so I wonder if I am just missing some very basic steps or something.
I have an HP LP2065 monitor that works fine with my PCs. I just got this new macbook, and to use the monitor I got the Apple VGA to mini DVI connector. When I connect the monitor the macbook can detect it (right down to model number) and it lets me choose mirroring, resolution, bitrate, etc. Each time I do so it even enticingly goes black for a while as if something is actually happening. But throughout all this the monitor does not detect any display, it just tells me to "Check Video Cable" and then goes to sleep after awhile because it's not getting any info.
Weird things also happen such as the macbook not waking up properly or showing a black screen when I turn it on, until I unplug the monitor.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello. Your problem is common. I use an HP SB21. The Macbook does appear to have some compatibility issues with certain brands of external display.

Satellite L500 - How to show external display after closing lid?

Hi,
i`m using the Satellite L500-120 Notebook, and before installing Windows 7 the laptop had a very comfortable function, when i applied an external display.
When i closed the lid of my notebook, the desktop was shown on my external display (with the native resolution of the external display), so i didn`t have to
switch anything at the Control Panel. In Windows 7, i`m missing this function. I already tried to use the Control Panel, but there are no settings, which fits
with the earlier ones. I can duplicate the display, in order to see my desktop screen at my external display, but with the notebook resolution of 1366 x 768.
If i extend the displays, then there is only the background image at the external display, but this time with the native resolution.
So my question is, how to conifgure Windows to recognize that i closed the lid, and that the desktop screen has to be shown on my external display?
Or do i have to install one of the Toshiba applications, which i had before, that realized this function?

Im not a Windows 7 user because I will wait until it will be released offical but I hope I can help you a little bit:
First of all in Power Management you can choose the action what happens if you close the Lid (e. g. sleep, turn off, etc.). This action should be disabled because otherwise the notebook will shut down or something else.
Then I think you have to install the display driver for your notebook. You can try the Vista driver because the most of them are work on Windows 7.
Then you should be able to set the correct screen resolution for external monitor.
A working display driver is important for clone or extends monitors so check this!!

MBPro won't detect external display on DVI

Hi Folks,
I have a strange problem that gives me quite some headache:
Is use a MacBook Pro 3,1 2.2 Ghz, 4GB RAM, 128MB NVidia something together with a Samsung SyncMaster 215TW.
For the past year I was using my external screen without any trouble, connecting it via DVI to the mac. Every night I turn down the lid putting the notebook in sleep mode and switch off the monitor. Exactly as I did yesterday. But this morning however the external display didn't wake up as usual it did just nothing - was not even detected via the detect display function. And this is still the case right now.
So when I plug (or unplug) the DVI to the external something is still going on. I get the blue screen (don't get that wrong that used to appear just before it would expand the desktop to the external screen, but then it switches back as if there would be nothing connected.
No relevant entries in any logfile. System Profiler shows "Status: No display connected". The display itself says some no connection message if unplugged and - get this - falls to sleep mode right after I plugin the dvi connector to the mac.
I tried all this:
-reboot (with display connected & without display connected and all other imaginable combinations) - no positive result
-the display via DVI-VGA adapter works (but the image is not as nice unfortunately)
-reset PRAM (boot with optioncommand+PR)
-reset the entire thing (no power, no battery and hold the powerkey for 10 secs.) nothing
-connect some other external display to the mac via DVI - works perfectly
-connect the display via DVI to an other macbook pro computer - works perfectly too
-hard reset the display via the (red) support menu - no result
-an other DVI cable - no result
-booted from the leopard install cd - same thing
-booted from an other harddisk with 10.4.10 (removing the internal disk)- same strange behaviour with the old system
-booted ubuntu linux 8.04 - even here the same problem X doesn't recognize the external display if it is attached to the DVI port also no entries to the logs here.
-SwitchResX and tried to reset the display setting from there (vendor id 4c2d & product id 213 & 214) but still no success.
- called the apple support and my distributer of trust - no ideas but could be a hardware fault (mmh ok... but why do all other display I tried work perfectly with that beast of macbook pro but not any SyncMaster 215TW?!? that worked great for the whole last year)
I guess the macbook had a very bad dream that very last night about mac eating foo-bars that crawl through DVI cables from any 215TW display.
As for now I have a date with the local apple service partner -- in three weeks (it's holiday time in g.o. germany). Don't know what to tell him: Probably I'll need to go there with the screen to show them the entire scenario. Hopefully they (still) think it's a problem with faulty apple hardware (or system software) and replace the logic board.
But I'm still in hope! Is there anybody out there having an idea with what I could try next to bring back the love between my macbook and the lovely 215TW display?

I have recently bough a new Macbook Pro 15.4", it worked first time with a Samsung Syncmaster 2493HM but after a few days the 'detect display' utility ceased to connect, then a short while after on start up I was getting a blank screen with a flashing folder with '?' on it, preventing me from booting up successfully.
I tried the reset p-ram, didn't work then I tried an archive install of OSX and that ironed out all the creases - for a day, there has been no flashing folders on start up but the Samsung has failed to be detected and this morning wouldn't work no matter how many restarts or cable disconnecting attempts.
So I called Apple helpline, told the guy what had happened, he mentioned to try the install discs again with the display connected to see of the MBP sent a signal to it, after choosing the language in the OSX installer, the display was once again recognized! I didn't have to proceed any further with the install discs so quit, reset and ejected the install discs and all seems well again.
For how long i wonder?
I have no idea of this will work for anyone else but it works for me at the moment.
Interested to see when and how this finally gets solved!

MacBook Pro and External Display on full resolution

I want to use only my external 20" cinema display, connected to my MBP. So what I do is connect the display via the DVI cable, close the lid of the notebook, wake it up from the keyboard/mouse (now I have the full resolution of the Cinema Display), open the lid so I can use the keyboard and the trackpad. This is all right with me, but when I restart or after sleep MacBook's display turns on and is set up as primary and the Cinema Display goes to Dual View mode. Is there a way the laptop to remember the external Display as primary, so I don't always have to close the lid, wake up the laptop and open the lid.
For instance, when I've done this for the first time in Windows, I didn't have to do it again. Now every time I log in in Windows, the macbook's display automatically turns off and the Cinema Display gets its full resolution. This is what i want to be done when I boot in Mac OS.

I know both scenarios (OS X/Windows), but I'm pretty sure that there's nothing you can do about it. As long as your internal display is open while waking from sleep or booting up, it will be always on in OS X. I'm only using my external Cinema Display and keep the MBP's lid closed all the time. Of course, I use an external keyboard and mouse as well. You can only choose which display has the menu bar on it, but you can't turn it off without sleeping the Mac. In Windows the ATi/Nvidia drivers take care of your settings, but it won't be applied until you get to the Desktop, so you'll still have the internal display on while booting Windows...

Win 8.1, Retina MBP, external display, stupid scaling

I've got a Retina MacBook Pro (Late 2013) with a 2880x1800 display, also connected to an external 1920x1080 display, dual-booted into Windows 8.1 with the latest Boot Camp drivers and the most recent nVidia drivers.
In Windows, when I go into the Display control panel and make "Change the size of all items" a little larger, then things look fine on the external display - but the laptop's display shows a teensy tiny taskbar and teensy tiny icons on the desktop.
If I check "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays", then things look fine on the laptop's display - but the external display's windows and icons are HUGE.
And either way, if I'm not running the laptop's display at Retina resolution - even if I'm running at exactly half resolution, 1440x900 - then the laptop's display is terribly blurry. Makes me want to go back to a pre-Retina laptop.
What are the best Windows settings to have reasonably-sized windows and icons on the Retina display as well as the external display under Windows 8.1?
(Yes, this is just another reminder that I shouldn't bother trying to run Windows on a Mac ... but I thought that handling multiple displays with different pixel densities was supposed to be Windows 8.1's strong suit?)

Good point, but then it's a shame that not only can I not take advantage of the Retina resolution, but then the lower resolution setting makes the Retina display look terribly fuzzy. Even set to exactly half the resolution (2880x1800 -> 1440x900), it looks like WIndows is trying to fuzz everything instead of simply pixel-doubling it.
I understand that's a shortcoming of the nVidia driver. I'll go find the nVidia board to complain...
(I'm extending the desktop, btw, not mirroring.)

External Display No Longer Working (Air & Thunderbolt)

My MacBook Air just decided it no longer wants to work with my external Dell U2711 display via Thunderbolt to DisplayPort cable. Frustrating as this has been working for the past 3 years. Currently running OS X 10.10.2. Have tried PRAM and SMC resets to no avail. Not sure what is going wrong, but looking at the error log it is obviously trying to set it to the wrong resolution "1440 x 900". Previously everything was working great with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. Thoughts?

If you're still seeing no image on the external display after resetting the SMC and PRAM, then the next step I'd like you to do is to start the device in Safe Mode.
Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.
If you tried all of these steps for your display and the video issues persist, contact Apple technical support or take your Apple computer to the nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).

Satellite L50-B-1P1 - external display is not working

I have just bought a satellite L50-B-1P1. When I tried to connect the RGB (VGA) port to a TV ( as a external monitor), the display screen of the laptop became smaller and the right part of the whole picture was missing, even when the external monitor was not switched on.
The laptop screen has left and right display a black background. The picture is located in the middle. Is this supposed to be normal or something is wrong with this laptop?

As I understood the message, you have enabled the external display output and could see the picture on the TV.
The question is; what resolution the TV supported and what external output option did you choose?
The point is that you can switch to the external display choosing the option; extended desktop, clone display or you can switch off the internal display and show the picture only on external monitor TV.
In case you have cloned the display, both displays (internal + external) has to use the same resolution! In case the TV would support lower resolution, the internal notebook screen would lower the resolution too!
I would recommend you to read the user manual it provides some basic notebook knowledge

MB switches to external display upon closing the lid - instead of going to sleep... what to do?!

Since I updated to Mountain Lion (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8) my MacBook doesn't go to standby mode anymore, when i close the lid with an external display attached.
Instead it switches the external display to be the primary display and keeps on running.
It seems to me there used to be an option to choose how the MacBook reacts on the lid being closed. But as desperately as I looked fr it i couldn't find it.
Is there still any way to tell my MB that it should just power down, when i shut it, even with another display attached?
Hopefully it is just hidden away somewhere in the preferences... would be really stupid if Apple had taken that feature out...

Can MacBook Air (2012) handle 1920x1080 resolution on external display?

I was currently thinking about buying the following external display:

I have read mixed things about connecting macbooks to external displays so wanted to ask the following:
1. Firstly can the MacBook air 2012 handle an external monitor with resolution 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz?
2. Secondly, I have heard some Macbooks, with some cables (predominantly HDMI), don't give the option of 1920x1080 when plugged in, instead cap it at around 1600 leaving the external screen blurry. Which connection is best to get the full 1080p resolution, DVI, VGA or HDMI?

Captfred - I've tried plugging it into my friends screen now using my minidisplay to HDMI cable and the following options show up:
1080i
1080p
720p
1600x1400
1440x900
etc etc
Is the 1080p option 1920x1080? If I choose the 1080p option, the resolution looks nice and has large real estate on there, the only thing is if I full screen it the top and bottom are cut off? Is this a problem with the aspect ratio of the screen do you think?

I have an ENVY 17 with Win8.1 64bit, a great laptop, but I need an advice about using it while connected via HDMI cable to an external display (TV).
When I play heavy 3D games, the computer produces more heat than usual (of course this is normal), but doing so with closed lid, could this harm the display in some way, as a result of the heat?

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. It is a great site for information and questions. I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY 17 Notebook and issue with keeping the Notebook on while closing the lid. Here is a document on changing the Power option.
Control Panel - Power Options - upper left - Choose what closing the lid does.
Change Plan Settings and also check Advanced Settings. Make sure you do this for both battery and power.

Only FIREWIRE for playback on External Display???

Hi,
i'm still work on the setting of Preview on an External Display (TV). FCP only support FIREWIRE but NOT USB??? cause most of my Consumer Device only provide USB port.
No other way to set it up? Is the DVI output an good option (bypass FW device/converter)?

Firewire only if you are working with DV or DVCPRO HD footage...that's it. All other formats require a capture card or external converter. USB is not designed for streaming video.
You can get a DVI converter...that will send a MONITOR signal out, and you can use Digital Cinema Preview, but that will be a low res output. Full res output require the external boxes or capture cards...or firewire if you are working with DV or DVCPRO HD.
Shane's Stock Answer #8: External Monitor Viewing
If you are working with DV, this is simple. First connect your computer to a camera or deck via firewire, Then connect the camera/deck to your TV/Monitor via RCA or S-Video.
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Go to the View Menu, choose > External video > all frames
VIEW>Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
VIEW>Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section.
If you are working with HDV footage, FCP 6 allows you to view this via firewire, but ONLY as downconverted DV. It won't look the best, but you can see it. To do this,
If you need to view any format other than DV at full resolution, then you need to look into capture cards. Several standard definition and high definition models are available from www.aja.com and www.decklink.com. With these options you'll need a proper monitor to view full broadcast colors, but all models allow for realtime standard definition downconvert, allowing you to view HD on an SD monitor.
The Matrox MXO is another option that is output only, but allows you to view your footage on an Apple Cinema Display at full broadcast quality.

MacBook restart required to detect external display

My MacBook started occasionally not detecting an external display, connected either with a VGA or Mini-DVI adapter, unless I restart. Obviously this is a major nuisance and a show stopper if I'm stepping up to give a presentation.
Any ideas?

What I did was choose the "Show display in menu bar" in system preferences under display. This allows me to click the display icon in the menu bar and pick detect displays. This brings up the external for me.
