Choosing between 1.83GHz v. 2.0GHz (MacBook - white)

I'm planning to buy a MacBook (white) and would like to know in what situations, if any, I'm likely to notice a difference between the base 1.83 MHz model and the 2.0 GHz level.
According to MacWorld's tests, the performance difference between the two models wasn't 'significant.' However, I'm not familiar with what MW's testing covers.
Am I likely to get lesser performance from the 1.83 GHz model when:
(1) running music applications like Live, Reason, Logic, etc.; or
(2) just doing a lot of multitasking?
I plan to max the RAM out to 2.0 GB.
Re: the 2.0GHz model, if the processor speed difference isn't significant, I would choose the 1.83GHz model, since I don't really think of a DVD-writeable drive as something I necessarily need -- not for the $200 premium, anyway.
Replies appreciated.

I had the same questions as you and, seemingly, read the same reports about the marginal operational differences between the 1.83 nd 2.0 GHz models.
Figuring I'd really only ever use DVD burning for archiving, in the end I got the base unit, cranked up the RAM and bought myself an external HDD (for archiving, backup and storing bulky - but hardly used - programs) and probably still ended up saving myself cash over the 2.0 model.
Some hardcore gamers and graphic artists have expressed concern over the integrated graphics on the MacBooks (all models) but that's not been an issue for me either - and I'll be d*mned if I'll fork over the Big Cash to Apple for a Pro.

i am going to buy a macbook pro 15" with the 8gb ram and all that jazz but i can't choose between the glossy or anti glare they both will apply to my daily use but i cannot decide. is it possible to pick lets ay the glossy one then if i dont like it switch to the anti-glare or not ?

You can replace the screen later on, but at a cost.
Best bet would be to go to an apple shop and have a look at the 2 side by side and decide for yourself; if there was 1 that was better than the other, apple wouldn't give you the choice.
p.s. on a personal note I like the glossy one better. nicer picture IMO

I can't seem to decide between the 13" or the 15" MacBook Pro. I had a 14.5" I'm just used to that size. Dell which crashed on me for the third and last time. It was also my primary home computer. Is the 15" necessary or should I just get the 13"? I probably won't be doing any graphics or anything like that.

It is really a matter of your personal preference. You have to choose between the extra carrying convenience of the smaller machine and the greater "real estate" of the bigger. I use a 15", and have not found it inconvenient for carrying, even on aircraft, where it has to share backpack space with an SLR camera and assorted lenses.

  • How can I choose the built-in mic of the Macbook Pro instead of the headphones' mic?

I have some headphones with a built-in microphone connected to the Macbook Pro, but I would like to use the microphone of the Macbook Pro instead of the headphones' one. If I go to System Preferences > Sound > Input, I can choose between 'External microphone' and 'Line in', but none of them take the sound from the Macbook Pro's microphone.

Go to System Preferences on that click sound icon select input chose which mic you want

  • Difference between running FCP on PB or macbook?

I am in between buying refurb PB 12 for 1,200 or a 1.83 macbook for 2,500, will the macbook be substantially superior to the 12 PB in running FCP or FCP HD?
This will be my first mac as well as my first expereince with editing but I am really into it and I don't think this will be a phase, In fact I am taking two video making classes and a photoshop class.
I am also concerned about buying technology that seems to be on its way out, but the price differeance is to big to disregard, i could always buy a 12 Pb and then sell it later and then buy a macbook. Please help me decide my macbook ships in two days and I would have to cancel it by then.

First of all, I will say that the idea of editing on a 12" screen sounds like torture to me. Screen real estate is crucial - you can NEVER have enough. So for that reason alone, I'd (personally) never even consider a 12".
Secondly, no one is going to be able to speak much about the performance of FCP on a MacBook Pro because FCP will not run on it at all right now. We'll know more in March: "...The current version of Final Cut Studio is not supported on Intel-based Mac computers with Rosetta. A Universal version of Final Cut Studio will be available before the end of March 2006..."
Finally, you're sort of in a rock & a hard place I think. The 12" is virtually dead technology. But the MacBook Pro, being so brand new, could have it's own set of issues, like many "Revision 'A" computers do.
Sorry that I may not have helped out much here. I will say though, if it were me, I'd probably go MacBook Pro. (If I were choosing between these items you've stated....)

  • Does anyone know the geekbench score of the 2011 2.0GHz Macbook Pro?

Does anyone know the geekbench score of the 2011 2.0GHz Macbook Pro?  I have heard different numbers and it all seems way exaggerated.  I believe it is between 8800+...  Help.

I found this online, but I was wondering if this is a real list of actual scores, or if someone made these up...  I will have the:
MacBook Pro 15" 2.0GHz, 8GB Ram, 750GB (7200rpm) HDD... Not sure if this info is helpful at all?

  • Need your help choosing between 2 audio/midi interface for logic

Hi, new member here. I just signed-up just to ask for your recommendations.
I am looking to buy either the Cakewalk UA-4fx (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/UA4FX) or Tascam US-122mkII (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/US122mk2).
Do you have any advice on which one to get (or a third alternative if you know something that's similar but better)?
I'm mainly looking to record from my Roland Fantom X keyboard to my Macbook (using Logic Pro). The effects/filters on the Cakewalk device is not that important to me (since I can use software effects), but the quality of sound is the most important. Also, ease-of-use and compatibility with Logic Pro is important. The device also must include MIDI-in/MIDI-out in addition to 1/4 inch direct line in for my synth. (I plan on using Midi-In/Midi-out with MainStage in Logic Studio). Not looking to spend too much more than $100.
I think I read in a review that even though the Cakewalk UA-4fx has 2 inputs, it can only record 1 at a time. Is the same true of the Tascam or can it record 2 simultaneous tracks?
But in short, sound quality AND compatibility with Logic Pro and MainStage are the main concerns. Does anyone have advice on choosing between the 2 or a third option if you know of one?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello -
It's been suggested to avoid, if possible, USB-based audio devices. My humble suggestion? I'd consider MOTU products. I own three MOTU audio devices (2408-MK3, 828-MK3 & 828-MK2) and all work just fine. The 828-MK3 has both midi and audio inputs & outputs (including ADAT inputs/outputs).
Other people will, no doubt, suggest audio devices from other companies. All probably get the job done well. But if you're thinking about recording a lot of instruments at the same time, it is my understanding that it is best to avoid USB-based devices.
Good luck with your search and your decision.

  • How do I share music in iTunes between different iTunes account on the MacBook Pro?

How do I share music in iTunes between different iTunes account on the MacBook Pro?

If it's in a single iTunes library, it's already being shared. If it's in separate user accounts on the computer, move one library to the /Users/Shared/ folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, point it there, and import the music from the other library to it.

The hinge between my screen and my computer (macbook pro retina) has cracked and doesn't hold the screen anymore. Can I fix it without changing my screen. And if it's still on guarantee does Apple have to repair it?

Apple can fix any and all of their computers.  Whether it would be charged to you would be the question.   Do you have AppleCare?
Accidental damage is not covered by AppleCare.

  • How to get rid of the attention to choose between my wifi network or the apple tv? That appears in the screen saver

When the screen saver is on appears an message where ask me to choose between my wi fi network or my Apple Tv in order to get the signal from my PC. There is something I must do to set up the Airplay, if so, what I have to do and where?

If you are talking about the header bar of the Message Pane the only way to get rid of it completely is to close the message pane by pressing F8.
There is a add on called Compact Header that will let you make it smaller.

  • How to choose between different audio output in different programs

I want to choose between the audio outputs in different programs.
For example; I want to hear spotify/iTunes with my plugged-in speakers and skype with the build-in/intern speakers.
It is possiple to control this on Windows but can I do it on Mac?
Does anyone know an app for this problem?
    Thanks for help!

I'd assume you'd want to set the sequence to "slur" notes and then just calculate the notes between a top & bottom value based on a float and generate NOTE_ON messages appropriately.
The pitch bend is designed to emulate / support the bend wheel found on sound keyboards...and it just modifies the pitch associated with a given note. A pitch bend of +2 would turn an A into B, etc...
    So, you'd want to do...
SET_SLUR (however you do that, I'm not a MIDI expert)
    pitch = bottom_pitch + ((top_pitch-bottom_pitch) * sliderValue);
    NOTE_ON(pitch)

  • Help me choose between a G4 867 DP or 1.33 G4 Mac mini

What would be better to use for me? I do simple desktop publishing with Indesign and Photoshop CS, I need to choose between a MDD Dual 867 with 2 gig of ram, ATI 8500 video card, airport card and two SATA hard drives with a total of 360 GB of storage or a Mac mini 1.33 GHz G4 with 1 gig of ram, bluetooth & airport extreme with a external 160 GB mini stack. I like the MDD because its upgradeable but is it worth putting more money in it? The mac mini I am stuck with the 1 gig of ram & 32 mb video card. I need help with this decision so your input would be very appreciated.

No NO!!! Go with the Mini! The mini is much better as its so small and cute and doesn't take up all that room compared to that mighty MDD machine!
    JUST KIDDING!!!!
No, seriously go with the MDD. Its more stable, rock solid, and would show the mini a thing or two. My dual 1.25 simply rocks!
The DP 1.6 and 1.8 LACK L3 CACHE!!! remember, L3 CACHE is the backbone as to why the G4s are still fighting to hang on!! No, I would rather keep my dual 1.25 with 2MB L3 then go with a sonnet upgrade which doesn't have L3. Unless, someone can honestly tell me if its really worth my money(of which I have, and can get things at wholesale price) to pop in the 1.8DP or 1.6dp and see DRAMATIC speed performance and speed bumps.

  • Can I set FIREFOX to choose between two different homepages or websites?

I know that Firefox will open any number of web sites when you start it. I want to have the ability to choose between opening a preset number of sites and just one. For instance at the beginning of the day I want all my banking sites available when I start. Later in the day I want to open only say, Google. Is there any way to have Firefox do that?

Apple does not offer custom colors. I'd suggest you get a skin for your iPod. Those are available in hundreds of colors and patterns and since they're not permanent, they don't affect the iPod's warranty and you can change if you ever get tired of the skin you chose.
