Choosing bit depth while recording audio

Hi,
First, the short version of the question:
Do you know of any simple audio recording app (ie: not a monster audio suite) which takes low CPU usage, and lets you choose the internal bit depth using for audio sampling (ie: sample at PCM16, at PCM24,...)  ?
Now, in case you need it, the long version of the question:
I'm digitizing my huge collection of audio tapes, with my G5 iMac (OSX 10.4). The quality of the recordings is somewhat low, so I don't need a high-end audio card, and I believe the builtin audio card of this G5 is more than adequate for this task (Burr Brown PCM3052 with support for PCM16, PCM24, and AC3 16).
I've done my first tests with the just-released new version of Audacity (2.0.0), which is compatible with 10.4 and higher, so I'm very happy to be able to install a brand-new application in 10.4.
Audacity works fine, but has a couple of issues:
First, you can choose the audio track bit depth, but not the internal bit depth at which you're sampling. In other words, I'd expect to use some selector to choose from PCM16 or PCM24 recording, which is what this iMac seems to support. However, I can only choose the storage bit depth, not the sampling bit depth. I suppose Audacity is recording at PCM24, but I've no way to test this.
Second, it takes about 40% CPU usage while recording (yes, I disabled the realtime graphics update of Audacity... if I don't disable it, usage becomes 60% or higher).
I tried Audio Hijack Pro (well, the last version supporting 10.4), and it won't let me choose the sampling depth either.
So... do you know of any simple recording app which overcomes this issues?
TIA!

although I was looking for something simpler.
Compared to what you describe, my use of GarageBand sounds "simpler."
GarageBand is part of iLife, so it is meant to be easy to use, unlike big brother Logic.  Furthermore, I am using it in a very limited way. When recording, I just set up ONE track, which is pretty easy.
GB records at the best possible quality, up to 24-bit.  I used 16-bit because my source was analog tapes and records, and I did not think it would make the final result any better.  The GB project file serves as my "master copy" for future enhancement.
The best part is editing the full recording of the entire tape/record, into individual songs, then exporting them to iTunes as 256 kbps AAC (or MP3) files, all within GarageBand.  A few of my records had skips, and I was able to edit them out by overlapping two tracks with the same portion of music, and carefully eliminating the skip at the transition between the two tracks.  Also, because the source is analog, there is noticeable background hiss when the music level is low.  It is particularly noticeable at the end of songs that fade out.  To make the hiss fade out along with the music, I gradually adjusted the master volume level downward to zero starting when the music level became low enough for the hiss to be noticeable.  That made the hiss fade out, which helped "hide" it.

  • Pause button problem while recording audio

Someone talked about that problem on another post but I think
that problem deserve a post for it...
We have a probleme when using the pause button while
    recording audio on a slide.
If we hit the pause button, it completely deletes all
    previous recording in the slide.
If someone have a long text to read for a slide he cannot
take a break and think if everything is ok. Our clients are
    disappointed and calls this function.
Do you have an idea when that problem will be solved ?
    Thank

Hi Edji, I could not agree more. We reported this to Adobe
months ago and it has been acknowledged, but no information will be
made availlable about any fix release date. We have over 500 staff
users making recordings using Presenter and have trained the
majority on version 6. Imagine the number of supports calls we have
had to deal with when suddenly the pause button deletes all
previous slide recordings in version 7.
Depsite many attampts to get a resolution for this we have
had nothing aside from the suggestion above which certainly does
not fix the issue. It is a significant bug in the program that has
caused us endless hours of support work.
We are quite dissappointed at present with the lack of
reponse to the need for a fix and are currently evaluating a number
    of other products.
    Pityful but true.

  • IMovie quits while recording audio

iMovie quits while recording audio on the app it is the paid version I didn't get it free please help me I have uninstalled and reinstalled six times already with the same problem iOS 4.3.3 iPod touch 4g

I found this post by Appleman1958 in another forum thread in response to a similar issue with a different Cannon DV Camera.. but it may solve your issue as well. It worked for me.
Have you tried opening iMovie 08, then plugging in the camera to the firewire?
Camera should be plugged into electric power (not batteries).
Make sure your camera is turned on and in the right mode according to your owners manual. This is probably PC mode or playback mode.

  • Logic + HD2 crashing while recording audio.

    Hi,
I run a HD2 rig with Logic Pro 7.1.1 and i experience crashes when recording audio. Let's say that after 15 minutes of record / stop/ play /quick punch i will crash my system. Then restart, etc...
The system is quite stable until i only use midi, play audio, work with virtual instruments, bounce.
I record to FW400 Lacie HD
I have system on a G5 2.7gHz 4.5go Ram 2 SATA disks etc...a RME HPDSP 9632 plugged ia ADAT in out in my 96 i/o.
I run Core audio and DAE.
Has anybody that kind of weird behaviour ?
    Thanx.
    Raf.

    d&é&é** !! ,
means that i will have to "program" all my auto punches... Hope "they" will fix it faster than "they" got rid of the nuber of sampler instruments (exs24) limitation :-/
Thanx Tbird. I moved from OS 9.2.2 to OS X.4 lately, in the same time from Mix cube to HD and from Logic 6 to 7 at the same time. It's like a new world of bugs for me...

  • Crashing while recording audio in slide

    Presenter 7.0.7
    PPT 2010 32-bit
    Win7 46-bit
    VMWare Fusion
    Mac OS Lion 10.7.2
    MXL USB Studio1 mic
    (yes, glutton for punishment)
    There are 2 issues here...
As near as I can tell, Captivate is not recognizing my Win7 settings for my USB recording mic, i.e. I cannot reduce the strength of the signal the mic sends to Presenter. Although I welcome suggestions, since I'm running under Mac OS and VMWare Fusion, that's not my biggest concern. Controls for the mic work fine on Mac side.
If my voice triggers the recording level dialog shown below, I have 3 options:
    Yes
    No
    Cancel
Cancel seems to be the best choice, but that's the one that crashes PPT.
Yes takes me into the Calibration window, which doesn't improve/change my situation
No allows me to start anew with the recording.
I'm not sure if there's much of a question here, but wanted to document this in case anyone else is running into it, or in case anyone has suggestions. For now I'll simply keep the mic at a less-than-optimal 10 inches when teaching Presenter, and do all my "real" recordings outside of Presenter.

    @mattrsullivan

    Shubbi,
Is there a solution to this YET?
I have not used Presetner for some time, but was a very serious user of it up until about 1 year ago. Because of my very good history with Presenter, when I saw a chance to introduce it to a number of colleagues this summer, I jumped at it.
AND THEN... I find that Presenter is simply not working right. My own experience of the last two days has been frustrating, annoying in the extreme, and just flat out dumb. Adobe is a very large company. What is the message I am supposed to take away to know that for at least six months, and I think a good deal longer, there are a LOT of people who have had trouble with Presenter. Crashing sometimes, not working right with Connect servers other times. Just flat out lunacy in my view for a seasoned Presnter developer.
And for the novice users I have not committed to help... this is going to be a nightmare.
If Adboe EVER wants my loyalty, then this probem needs serious attention and it needs it soon. As in three months ago.
I strongly believe the problem is a terrible implementatoin of Presenter that simply cannot keep up wiht new versions of Office and Windows. One patch on another.
The right thing for Adobe to do is to fold the functionality of Presenter into Captivate. That would yield one application to keep up with. Captivate is a very nice. But its not appropriate for my colleagues because they have a ton of backlog in PPT and they don't have the time or interest to master the learning curve for Captivate.
That was a side bar. Just PLEASE Adobe, take your user base for Presenter seriously.

  • Audio bit depth settings?

    Hi Everyone,
I have used AME for video, but now I have audio files that have to go through it. I am taking a audio format and making a preset for it to become a .mp3. I can see that I can only set the kbps. The kHz sampling rate of 44.1 is fine, but I need to set bit depth to either 16 or 24. I have looked everywhere and can't find a setting for bit depth for just audio. Am I missing a setting?
I get the feeling that AME was made for video, but not for pure audio...is that the case? When I have used it for video I had a ton of options, but for video very few.
    Thanks so much!
    Laurie

Your (constructive) comments are accepted here but if you are trying to get Apple's ear about feature requests, use the feedback link http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html
One comment, the Import options are ALSO for converting between formats within iTunes so, while you cannot convert TO a 24 bit WAV, you can convert FROM a song encoded in 24 bit to a more iPod friendly format.

  • Pointing and recording audio simultaneously

    Hi,
I create "lectures" by basically importing PowerPoint slides
into Captivate and then recording audio.
I would like to point (with the cursor, for example, or even
highlight) specific words, equations or regions in the slide while
I am recording the audio. I know I can first record audio and then
include all types of effects (edit) later on, but that takes more
time. Is it possible to "save" cursor movements while recording
audio with Captivate? I do not want to use a screencasting software
for doing that because of the larger file size it would generate.
    Thanks,

    Hi lazylecturer
No, as far as I know it isn't possible to accomplish what you
are wanting. Not if you simply imported the PowerPoint and went
from there. You might try this approach if you are using Captivate
    3. Set PowerPoint up to play in a window and adjust the size to
what you wish to see in Captivate. Then launch Captivate and record
using the full motion option. The full motion option was improved
in Captivate 3 so as to accommodate longer recordings.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Maximum audio sample rate and bit depth question

Anyone worked out what the maximum sample rates and bit depths AppleTV can output are?
I'm digitising some old LPs and while I suspect I can get away with 48kHz sample rate and 16 bit depth, I'm not sure about 96kHz sample rate or 24bit resolution.
If I import recordings as AIFFs or WAVs to iTunes it shows the recording parameters in iTunes, but my old Yamaha processor which accepts PCM doesn't show the source data values, though I know it can handle 96kHz 24bit from DVD audio.
It takes no more time recording at any available sample rates or bit depths, so I might as well maximise an album's recording quality for archiving to DVD/posterity as I only want to do each LP once!
If AppleTV downsamples however there wouldn't be much point streaming higher rates.
I wonder how many people out there stream uncompressed audio to AppleTV? With external drives which will hold several hundred uncompressed CD albums is there any good reason not to these days when you are playing back via your hi-fi? (I confess most of my music is in MP3 format just because i haven't got round to ripping again uncompressed for AppleTV).
No doubt there'll be a deluge of comments saying that recording LPs at high quality settings is a waste of time, but some of us still prefer the sound of vinyl over CD...

I guess the answer to this question relies on someone having an external digital amp/decoder/processor that can display the source sample rate and bit depth during playback, together with some suitable 'demo' files.

  • Why does my line-in audio port quit stop working while recording?

My set-up is a bit confusing, so I'll try and be very specific.
I record into Garageband via the following set-up:
Microphone(s) run into TASCAM 4-track -> RCA-to-Stereo Cable runs out of TASCAM into MacBook Pro via the single audio port.
This generally works fine for several hours, but the last 3 times I've had a recording session, the audio signal has dropped to virtually nil without any warning. At this point, even yelling into the microphone (with the TASCAM max-ing out) will only produce 1 volume bar in the "Line-In" system preference screen. At best, it sounds like a very quiet whisper.
My microphone is working (works while recording to tape) as does my cable (RCA - to - Stereo) when used in other situations. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Am I tripping some sort of internal line-in volume...protector? (Is that even a thing?) Or do I need a new audio port?

funny how to one seems to have an answer for this, I just posted my own issue, audio in line port just stopped working after update.

  • I'm trying to record audio into my iPad2 using GarageBand and an iRig, but I can't monitor my tracks at the same time as recording, meaning if I lay down a drum track and attempt to record guitar, I can't hear the drums while recording. Thoughts?

I'm trying to record audio into my iPad2 using GarageBand and an iRig, but I can't monitor my tracks at the same time as recording, meaning if I lay down a drum track and attempt to record guitar, I can't hear the drums while recording. Thoughts?

Hi, I have this exact same problem. I haven't been using an iRig, just a cheap USB-jack cable. I managed to do this with the first cable I bought, but since it broke I've been unable to find a replacement that allows me to hear the drums while recording. DId you manage to get over this issue? If so I would really like to know how. Thanks and best wishes.

  • Stereo Audio Record problem (While recording video as well)

    Hi,
I just just bought Sony Xperia C3 dual yesterday. I'm having problem with audio recording. I installed the Sony audio recorder from Google play store but while recording in stereo mode with it the gain suddenly drops after 1/2 second(s). Same problem while recording a video with stock camera app as well, video quality is fine but the audio with it is,just worst. Tried third party app like regorge pro but faced the same problem. Tried disabling the AGC with it, but no good. Recording in mono mode just works fine and I get clear record.
    Any solution?
    Thanks.

@uliwooly  This one i recorded today morning. The audio starts good & clear at the begining but just after one second it drops & then you can hear the bus engine sounds like waterfall. Here is the youtube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5H1jNxyYMlw Here's another video uploaded by a review site with the same problem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3vKwydfN6U & more from youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GLLj2ommP4  then i used a third party audio recorder with mic switch option https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6d4uAEZFRE as usual with the rear mic the gain suddenly drops after second & you can hear some weird sounds like a "movie bomb" sound at 00:04, "rattle snake" sound at 00:05 & 00:12 & with the front mic starts at 00:17 you can hear the difference. It's mono but so clear & sharp.  Finally, as i dont have the mic swith option while recording video, all videos i record will have the same problem. This is definitely not  the typical "sony" thing to carry on.
