Choosing External HD

Dear all,
A few months ago I purchased a Buffalo Passport USB 3.0 Harddisk 1TB. I was using it for storing media and I have been keeping it plugged in almost all day because I watch movies off of it. All of a sudden, it started making a clicking noise but it was working fine. Once the clicking had stopped, the hard drive was fine and worked normally for a few weeks. Then out of nowhere, it started clicking again but this time it was beeping aswell. My computer couldn't pick up the hard drive and now it just won't stop whirring and making noises everytime I plug it in. Does anyone know what the problem with my hard drive might be?
I am also looking to buy a new hard drive and I would really appreciate any suggestions. I would most likely be using this hard drive for the same reasons as I used the Buffalo one. Mostly to store all my movies and tv series. I would like the hard drive to have no problem with being plugged in all the time when the laptop is turned on as I will watch movies off of it. I wouldn't be moving the hard drive around much as I usually just keep my laptop in one place and rarely take it out with me.
Thanks so much for reading my question.
I appreciate any advice and help you will give me!
Celine

Buffalo doesnt make HD, there are only 3 HD mfg.  Seagate, WD, and Hitachi/Toshiba.... all other "makers" just put their name on one of those 3.
Most reliable 3.5" class HD are Seagate
Most reliable 2.5" class HD are HItachi/Toshiba (same as used by Apple in the macbook Pro).
MUCH empirical data (and my own as well) says that Western Digital are THE WORST.
WD has some compatibility issues with Mac.
People running server farms and see 1000s of HD, and failures will all tell you the same, in 3.5" class, get a Seagate, and DONT get a WD.
Current macbook Pro uses Hitachi/Toshiba 5400RPM HD

When I choose external editor in iPhoto on my iMac it does not recognize Aperture. When I do the same on my laptop it works? Any ideas?

No idea, but Aperture is not an external editor. Like iPhoto, Aperture is a Photo Manager. It's a database. There is no way to round trip a shot from iPhoto to Aperture and back again like you can with Photshop or an image editor.
Given that Aperture does pretty much everything that iPhoto does - and a whole lot more -  it begs the question: why not just use it to manage your photos?

I don't understand the question exactly, could you restate it.  Sorry mate, I might just be braindead.
But, as far as the issue, it is by design.  the column is a lookup columns which essentially ties to the external data.  if that data is removed, the column on your simple list becomes invalid and any edits of the simple list item will require
    it to be changed.
are you wanting to make the ECT read only?  that's simple enough.  you can pop open SPD and edit the ECT, then remove the C/E/D operations (create/update/delete).  That will not, however make it read-only in any other systems that access that
external data, as I assume its not just SP or else it wouldn't be external

  • How to "choose" external hard drive

I have searched several of the internal to external HD discussions but do not know what to do when the external hard dricve does not show up so i can choose it.
I have been working on a video on my internal HD and then realize ( of course) that my internal is too small. bought a WD 320 external and hooked it up. Time machine recognized it and sent everything onto it for back up I guess. I double clicked on Mac HD on desk top> application> disk utilties and it is there so I went to Erase> Mac extended journal and titled it > security at zero out. When I went to FCE 4 >system preferences > Set, I cannot find it ( cannot open disk utilties) in order to set it as the scratch disc. When I go back in thru Mac HD again I can open the disc utitlites but none of the setting I made like ( like name and security ) were saved. Now what???
is there a way that I can do this and continue on my video seamlessly
    thanks

The reason why I was asking is that when an external drive is attached it should show up on your desktop. Then from FCE you simply navigate to the drive on your desktop to choose it on your scratch disk, not go through disk utilities. It seems to me that something might be wrong with your drive if it is not showing up.
When you connect it, does it show up in Disk Utility? If so, how is the drive formatted?
And last of all, What do you mean "Time Machine used to show up on my desktop"? Time Machine is an application. Do you mean that the external drive with the Time Machine symbol used to show up on your desktop?

  • How to choose external drive for Time Machine?

Having recently changed from a pc to a Mac, I realise that the backup comapny I was using (Carbonite) is not compatible with Mac. I also noticed that Leopard comes with Time Machine and backup features which require an external drive. The website says that pretty much any HFS+ hard drive will do. After having done a search for hard drives and HFS+, I only found one.
Does this mean that I cannot go to my local retailer and ask for a hard drive and plug it in, or do I specifically need to say it's for a Mac?
Is the best way to try and find an online backup company and forget about Time Machine?
    I am totally confused...

Stop. Do not go to a local retailer and buy "a hard drive".
I will assume that your PC only had USB ports.
Well, you new iMac is better. It has both USB 2.0 and FireWire 400.
You want to get a drive that supports both. And then, you will use the FireWire connection.
    Why FireWire?
    1. You can create a bootable copy of your internal hard drive using software such as SuperDuper! from http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html . This means that if your internal drive fails, you can boot from the external one.
    2. FireWire 400 is faster than USB. See http://www.barefeats.com/usb2.html for proof.
So, surf to http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/400+USB2/ and buy a Quad interface drive in the size your want. If you are not happy with OWC, then look at LaCie.com, G-Technology.com
How large should this new drive be? As large as you can afford. Your SuperDuper! backup partition should be equal to your internal drive and the second partiion can be used by Time Machine. A quad interface drive will be viable for many years. I would start at 500GB and go up from there.

  • Choosing External Display

    Hi,
I'm new here and hope you will forgive me for posting a question that I am sure has been discussed before. I'm in a real hurry though...
    I have an iBook G4 1.2Mhz, 12", running OS 10.3.9
Since I started with photography as a serious hobby, the display has been a major frustration. It is just way too small, difficult to edit pictures on it. So I would love a larger external display, and now I was asked to wish for a specific one (as a GIFT!:), but real quickly! Problem is, I need an LCD-display, don't have space for a CRT.
Somebody told me that my only option is getting a new computer! That can't be the only option... Is there a way for me to, safely and successfully, use e.g. a 20.1" NEC widescreen display? Or, is my only option going for a 15" NEC with the same resolution as the built in display (1024 x 768)? It is of course important that the quality of what it displays, is good, since we're talking image editing.
Thanks a lot for any help you can give me, it will be truly appreciated!
PS! I really don't know anything about these things. I have used 8 PB's and this iBook since 1992, but never really learned about how to deal with things like this. So I hope you can bear with me in my ignorance. I'm real scared of doing anything that may harm my iBook, or something like that. Saw that there is a software you can use (spinning something?), but it seemed risky...
    Summer Greetings,

I thought I had checked the info carefuly enough before I got my wife a ViewSonic VX912 TFT monitor, but noooooo. I now realize that I had to use the hack to get higher resolutions.
My question is, how did you get the 1280 x 1024 to fill the screen? I had it @ 1280 x 1024, but the image was centered on the monitor with lots of black around it. And actually now I cannot even pick the 1280 x 1024. I can only go to 1152 x 870...no idea why though.
Any help would be appreciated. My wife uses the computer to work on her doctorate and the text is so fuzzy. I feel bad as it was me that said it would help her eyes getting this monitor :/
BTW she is on an iBook G4 late 2003

  • Error -50 when using an external editor

Having finally graduated from iPhoto 2, I found some "interesting" behavior in iPhoto '08...
iPhoto objected when I tried to save an externally edited photo back into its slot in iPhoto -- nothing lost, just an error dialog and the edits were not applied. Since it was repeatable, it made me curious.
When you choose external editor to edit a photo in iPhoto 8, the first thing iPhoto does is stash a copy of the original (and activates the "Revert to Original" menu item for that photo). Just editing in iPhoto 8 doesn't do any of this until you accept the changes -- that's an important distinction, because if you change your mind with the external editor (and make no edits, or cancel them without saving), that stashed copy stays in the "modified" folder.
For all practical purposes, it's "forgotten" unless you happen to choose "Revert to Original", in which case, the extra photo is unceremoniously purged. Now, if you don't think about purging that forgotten copy and later decide that you actually do want to edit that photo in an external editor after all, iPhoto will again stash a copy while your external editor is opening. It gets stashed in the same folder that already has the previously stashed (and forgotten) image file. If the file were overwritten, there would be no big problem, but it does not get overwritten, and you can't have two files with the same name in the same folder. So the finder appends a "_1" to the end of the file name -- and THAT sets up the problem. When you finish editing and save the file back to iPhoto, you will be (unintentionally) trying to add a file to your collection that iPhoto doesn't know about. The filename change to avoid a conflict in the folder is not reflected in the iPhoto 8 database.
Older iPhoto versions would have let that pass (and that's why there were always problems with database corruption), but the newer version catches the attempt and simply doesn't allow the save to take place.
That's the "why it happens", but it's only my second day with iPhoto '08 and I'll need a little more time to work out how to selectively fix the problem without damaging the database -- a database rebuild does not purge those stashed photos (and you wouldn't want it to because most of them are the originals for photos that were actually modified).

    Brie Fly:
I tried to replicate that using Photoshop and could not. When starting an edit with PS a file is created and remains is I abort the edit in PS. However, if I edit again with PS and save the original modified file is changed with no other file being created.
What 3rd party editor are you using? The only time I get a _1 file is when I move a file to an event that has the same file name as a file already in that event.
What system are you running and are you at iPhoto 7.1.1, iLife Support 8.1.1 and Quicktime 7.3?
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How do I run system recovery dvd from an external dvd drive?

I am having trouble trying to restore my DV 6000 (dv6915nr) from an external dvd drive.  I am aware that this laptop has had several hardware issues, including the loss of use of the internal dvd drive and have tried all the fixes that I could find, including changing filter settings in the registry, changinging the boot order in the bios and even removing the intenal drive.  Since none of these fixes worked, I removed the hard drive and installed window 7 Prodessional in a desktop computer.  After reinstalling drive in laptop, I installed all the Vista drivers from HP.  Computer works fine except for sound card and Nic that failed and have been replaced by USB devices.  Simce I am not 100% sure the hardware failures are motherboard failures and not software, I would really like to run my System Restore DVDs that I purchased from HP.  And that's where I need help.
I am A Plus and Network Plus certified, so I am pretty sure  that I have tried all the obvious soutions.  Evedrything turned on, checked the cables, accessed dvd in wimdows and even ran restore disk in a desktop machine to the point that it told me I was trying to restore the wong computer.  I downloaded a program called Win To Flash that allows you to copy a setup disk to an external hard drive, but that didn't work.  HP restore disk does not have  Setup file on it, so it wouldn't copy to drive.  Tried just copying the disk to external and that didn't work either.  Also tried switching drive letters D and E without any success.
    Bios choices are:
    USb floppy
    ATAPI cd/dvd rom drive
    USB diskette on key
    Notebook Hard drive
    Network Adapter
Original restore partition is long gone.
I would rather restore it with an external Hard drive, not an USB memory stick.  I think both would work the same.  I do have an USB floppy drive, if there is some way of starting installation from floppies.
Like I said, I really like the computer, even with all its faults, but I would like to restore it to its original  Operating System.

Some progress, I got it to try to boot from an external hard drive.  Downloaded a program called WINToboot. tried to run it, got as far as formatting my  hard drive and might have loaded some kind of boot program.  Would not copy my restore disks because they did not have set up program.  Copied both restore disks to hard drive and tried to boot laptop.  F0 produced choose external hard drive choice.  Got "no OS found" error. only choice ctl alt del. I think I am headed in right direction.  Just need to know what to load on external hard drive.

  • External Monitor not showing.

    Good Day All,
I seem to be having problems with setting up my external monitor...
I have a JVC tape deck, I forgot the model, and a SONY TV(forgot the model).
What I did was I used a firewire plugged it to the back of my g5 then onto my tape deck. From my tape deck to my TV.
Then I set my stuff all up in FCP.
    1. VIEW> Using FIREWIRED DV PAL
(As a note my FCP recognizes the FIREWIRE becoz when I unplug the firewire the FCP notices and gives a warning)
    2. VIEW> Set to ALL FRAMES.
    3. Mirrored on Desktop.
And when I Log and Capture I see the footage on the TV and on my monitor and yes I closed the Log and Capture window before i do anything.
I also turned on the tv and the tape deck then i turn on the FCP and it recognizes it.
These equipment I've used before and WAS working, but the office moved so the stuff was moved. But now, nothing i do works...PLS I NEED HELP. I'm Making a presentation so I need my monitor.
    Pls and TNX!!!
If it helps... I also have 2 CPU monitors attached to my G5(my secondary and primary). When I set my playback to Digital Main/Secondary they work. I've also tried disconnecting the other monitor incase that hampers the process.
    Thank you very much!

Shane's Stock Answer #8: External Monitor Viewing
If you are working with DV, this is simple. First connect your computer to a camera or deck via firewire, Then connect the camera/deck to your TV/Monitor via RCA or S-Video.
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Go to the View Menu, choose > External video > all frames
VIEW>Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
VIEW>Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section.
If you are working with HDV footage, FCP 6 allows you to view this via firewire, but ONLY as downconverted DV. It won't look the best, but you can see it. To do this,
If you need to view any format other than DV at full resolution, then you need to look into capture cards. Several standard definition and high definition models are available from www.aja.com and www.decklink.com. With these options you'll need a proper monitor to view full broadcast colors, but all models allow for realtime standard definition downconvert, allowing you to view HD on an SD monitor.
The Matrox MXO is another option that is output only, but allows you to view your footage on an Apple Cinema Display at full broadcast quality.

  • Only FIREWIRE for playback on External Display???

    Hi,
i'm still work on the setting of Preview on an External Display (TV). FCP only support FIREWIRE but NOT USB??? cause most of my Consumer Device only provide USB port.
No other way to set it up? Is the DVI output an good option (bypass FW device/converter)?
    Thanks...really need help

Firewire only if you are working with DV or DVCPRO HD footage...that's it. All other formats require a capture card or external converter. USB is not designed for streaming video.
You can get a DVI converter...that will send a MONITOR signal out, and you can use Digital Cinema Preview, but that will be a low res output. Full res output require the external boxes or capture cards...or firewire if you are working with DV or DVCPRO HD.

  • Managing External Content Types - make it read only?

  • Issue with TTE - External System ID does not exist!

    Hi dear Gurus,
We followed the SAP Best Practice to set up our CRM 5.0 system and it seems to have opened the Pandora's box for us. When we try to create a service contract, there was an error message in the header complaining that the external system does not exist. Here is what the HELP tells us:
    In Customizing for TTE,
    1. Choose Assign Objects from External Systems
    2. Choose External System IDs
    3. Maintain system ID for the calling system BC5CLNT005
    4. Choose Save
However, when we get into IMG, under 'Assign Objects from External Systems', there is NO external system ID to choose. Why is this? Is it because our system is on a different patch level?
    Any idea would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

I have similar problem how did you solve this issue?
Your input will help me analyze the issue?

  • Execute package task to call external package

    Hi all,
I'm developing a SSIS project, I need an "execute package task" to execute a packahe stored in the SSISDB catalog of a SQL Server 2014 Instance.
If I choose "External Reference" I can choose from "File System" and "SQL Server" but if I point to the last one I can't see package stored in the SSISDB, it seems to me that the new SSISDB catalog is not supported in Visual
    Stusio (I'm using VS 2013).
Hey Microsoft developers, when you are at the coffe break, please talk each other!!!

    Hi Andrea,
As per my understanding, we can store packages to SSISDB database from SQL Server 2012. But we can also store package to MSDB database from SQL Server 2012. This is not a deprecated feature.
But the Execute Package task can run a child package from the project with Project Reference, can also run packages stored in the SQL Server MSDB database and packages stored in the file system with External Reference. There is no such feature that
support run the package from SSISDB database in the Execute Package task. For more details, please see:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms137609(v=sql.110).aspx
Besides, if you want to also select a package from SSISDB database, I recommend you that submit the requirement at
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/.  If the requirement mentioned by customers for many times, the product team may consider to add this feature in the next SQL Server version. Your feedback
is valuable for us to improve our products and increase the level of service provided.

  • Using Photoshop Elements as External Editor for iPhoto

I have set up iPhoto so that I can use Photoshop Elements as the external editor. When I select a photo and choose 'External Editor,' Elements comes up but my photo is not displayed.

    Hi Toomuchtrouble000,
When you are making the settings from iPhoto, make sure you select Photoshop Elements Editor, which is present in Support Files, not Photoshop Elements 11, which is actually the Welcome Screen.
    Please change that setting.
    Hope this helps.
