Choosing hard drives... 320 gb internal, ultrabay adapter, or 1tb external?

Hello I'm between that options, my questions are about performance. I have a t61p 6460 d8g. that comes with Hitachi 160 gb sata 1 7200 RPM.
1-The Seagate Momentus 7200.3 SATA 3Gb/s 320-GB Hard Drive may improve the laptop performance, it can be faster plus having more storage?
2-I read both 40Y8725 ultrabay adaptor works and doesn't fit in the t61p, who can confirm that? I already have two external hdd 160 and 80 gb... can be nice to use them in the ultrabay.
3-may be is better to keep my hdd and get an external
Barracuda ES.2 SATA 3.0-Gb/s 1-TB Hard Drive but I guess even if the drive is faster the real speed will be slower because it is external
cheers
Just for curiosity... including vista, how much storage do you use for the program files? I have like 80 gb just for the programs is that too much?

Solved!
Go to Solution.

I think that import the adapter would be more expensive than getting a 320 gb, considering that the adapter is going to be in a slower interface.
At other side it can be great to have 2nd hdd so may it can startup with another OS.
And about the hdd performance, there's some points a don't get, here are the datasheets
http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/ds_momentus_7200_3.pdf
http://www.hitachigst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/A198FEF5A3B22F08862572D400656432/$file/7K200DS.p...
I guess the many / in the measures correspond to the different models in the Hitachi my one should be the second model.
The data transfer info is given in a different way I don't know how I should compare them...
And the reading time that is 10 ms in the Hitachi I found another place that says that is 11 ms for the Seagate.

  • What's the easiest way to add storage to a mac mini. (1TB hard drive but only 32G of real storage). External device, internal or partitioning?

What's the easiest way to add storage to a mac mini. (1TB hard drive but only 32G of real storage). External device, internal or is there some way to partition? I tried doing so but received a message that there wasn't enough free space to partition. Seems like a 1TB drive should have more storage than my Ipad

Its worth confirming what free space you have on your drive:
go to:   Apple Menu > About this Mac >  More Info > Storage
The bar chart shows how much free space there is on the drive:
Please realise that partitioning does not create extra space so this wont help you.
If your free space is less than 20 % you should get extra storage with an external USB or Firewire drive, any make or model will work.

  • I purchased Apple TV. I had to upgrade my OS to Lion which I did. I cannot get Lion to open because time machine is backing up to two hard drives, my external hard drive and my internal hard drive.  How do I just get the backups going to the external? thx

I have a desktop Mac.  I bought Apple tv and wanted to connect my photos to the tv.  I learned that I had to upgrade my OS as I didn't have icloud capability.  I purchased and downloaded Lion.  I cannot open it however, because when I go to select the hard drive to install Lion onto, the dialogue box says that I cannot open it in either my external hard drive or the internal hard drive because of the backups to time machine.  I have tried the 'fix' of moving the backup folder to the trash and then putting it on the desktop, but I still can't access either one of the drives to install Lion.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

The current OS is Mountain Lion 10.8.3, so I if the purchase was recent, that is what you should have.
It should be possible to see what disk space is being used by opening the Disk Utlity in the Applications>Utilities folder.   It looks like both disks are set as TM disks:
If you have Time Machine backup of both the internal and external disks and want to rationalise the system to only backup one, then set the TM preferences>options to exclude volumes as required:
When you download the installer from the Apple Store (MAS) it will come up with a dialogue to run it.  It will then ask which disk you wish to install the system on.  Is this where you have got to, before it says they are both unavailable?

My ITunes Library is on an external hard drive, however, the internal hard drive on my laptop crashed, requireing a complete re-format and re-installation of Windows XP--When I re-install Itunes, what do I need to do to make sure I do not lose all of the content on the two iphones I have, and to re-associate the library with Itunes ( i know how to change the path) but I am fearful that somehow the library link will be broken since the old Itunes installation is gone, and who knows what else might go awry.

Good luck and you are welcome.
Like I said, I bought one of their inexpensive enclosures and now can use the hard drive just as a source for the files that are on it...my external drives are much larger and faster so I just plug that drive in when I need something from it.

I just bought a mac mini over the weekend. I saved items from my old G4 to an external hard drive. I go to plug in the external hard drive and the new computer is not recognizing it. Help.
Here is the information I have. The external hard drive is a 120GB Acomdata. It has both USB and Firewire. When I go to plug in to the mac mini through USB, it is not being recognized. When I switch to Firewire on the old computer I can see it, however when I go to USB it is not being recognized (even on the old computer).
I'm at a loss as to what to do. Any advice would be helpful.

Have you ever tried the FW 400 to 800 adapter?
I have used them on multiple occasions and they work just fine.
Try this (maybe you already have):
    -Boot Mini with drive disconnected.
-Do not connect drive but turn it on
-wait a few seconds for drive to spin up
-plug cable into the Mini then into drive.
This is an old drive and may have some timing
    issues.
I had an Acomdata drive a long time ago.  It
worked fine with FW but USB was flakey.

Solved the problem by dumping my external HD onto another computer. Re-formatting and re-installing the data.  Not what I wanted to do but it solved the problem.

    Thanks!

I called Apple Support and they walked me through it. They told me to basically copy and paste my music to the external hard drive. (I think.) Or maybe it was they had me transfer a folder to the EHD. I don't exactally remember it was a few years back. But I tried to plug in the EHD before starting and...nothing. Still says same thing, "locate file."

First transfer the photos to a folder on your MacBook using Image Capture in your Utilities folder. Then move them to iPhoto.
BTW, you might want to invest in a cheap USB hub.

As Babowa says, get an external disk.  You should have one for normal backups anyway.
Actually, I'm a strong fan of having multiple backups.  3 copies including the original, 2 different backup formats, and 1 backup off-site.
And when you have your iMac in for service, if you have just 1 backup at that point in time you have just 1 copy of your data.  I get paranoid about my data.
But if you are just making 1 backup, I would use SuperDuper (free for a full clone, and extremely good software, as is Carbon Copy Cloner, but it is not free anymore).
And then I would "Boot" from the clone, to make sure it was a good clone.
Booted from the clone, I would then use Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility to zero the original disk, as suggested by Babowa, so that when they replace the disk, the original disk containing your data is not in the hands of strangers.  A single pass of zeros is more than good enough as an erase, as the chances are no one is going to spend the money needed to try and read the erased data.  It is not like you have any super secret data, just stuff you do not want the casual data theif to get.  You will find the zeroing options under Disk Utility -> Erase -> Security Options
Just make sure you actually boot from your clone before erasing your original.  And if you are paranoid like me, make 2 backups, then erase the original :-)

Those look alot like file names and not infection names. I don't find any reference to anything like that on Norton or VirusTotal. Since you said these were Trojans, I would expect to see "Trojan" as part of the infection name.
".jar" files are executable Java applets. The random alpha-numerics would seem to indicate a cache file, likely from a browser with Java enabled. And we all know what ".zip" means.
Worst case is that you had Java enabled in a browser and were infected by one of the late variants of the Flashback Trojan over a year ago or one of a couple of other attacks using the same vulnerability but targetted against a small number of political sympathizers. Much more probable is that thes were Windows only Trojans. Hopefully you have a fully up-to-date OS X, including Java, and have disabled Java in all your browsers by now.

How can I move my backed up Itunes library from my external hard drive to my new internal hard drive? I went through the steps listed on the support page, and imported the .xml playlist that I moved to the desktop. Now all my playlists (names only) are on Itunes, but there is no content. Help?

assuming you moved the whole iTunes folder to your new internal HD, try this:
launch iTunes with the options key pressed. this window will appear
click +choose library+ and navigate to the _iTunes library file_ on your internal HD.
    any luck ?

  • How do I transfer my iTunes music from one internal hard drive to another internal hard drive without having to locate every song?

So I have two internal hard drives in my laptop but the hard drive that my music is on is running out of space. I want to transfer my music from the smaller hard drive to the larger hard drive so my computer can run faster. If I do this I'm afraid I'm going to have to locate every song within the iTunes library. Is there a way around it so I won't have to go in my files and locate every song? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Instead of moving the entire iTunes folder you can copy it, then do the Shift-launch trick to select the .itl file from its new location.  If it works, then go back and delete the original location.
But maybe clarify your configuration ... specifically, is your "iTunes Library.itl" file currently on the same drive that your music files are stored on?  Or, do you keep your .itl file on a separate drive than the native files?  If the .itl file is on a separate drive right now, then moving or copying the music files over to be on the same drive can result in iTunes not knowing where your native files went.  You can get around that using the Consolidate utility in iTunes, but that is not necessary if the .itl file lives with the music files.

  • How can i get Itunes to route my music to an external hard drive once my Internal drive is full?

My Internal hard drive is getting full and im starting to worry about how i will store tracks in the future. I have my itunes set to auto organize the files into the Music folder when dragged into Itunes. I am a DJ, so i do get music quiet frequently that i need to add to Itunes for My DJ Software, Serato, To read. Is there anyway i can have Itunes begin rerouting the new songs onto an external HD? and can i play songs from two different hard drives with itunes open? Example, Song A is on internal.. once i finish listening to it or having serato acess it, If i then want to play Song B, which is on an external HD, will Itunes need to "Relocate the file" or will it remember its stored on the connected External HD?
    Thank you

If that doesn't work for you then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .
