Choosing Layout Manager for a simple swing GUI application.

I am about to design a swing application with following design. The main Frame will consist of two panels, the left one will hold a tree menu and the right one will display or remove other panels from the main Frame based on the tree menu item selection. I won't be using CardLayout, because when a new menu item is selected from the left tree, I will remove the existing panel from the right side (completely from the swing memmory) and load a fresh panel.
I have used absolute positioning in the past and can use the same for this design too. But for the advantages of using a LayoutManagers instead, I am willing to use them(Layout Managers).
I understand that the main Frame could have BorderLayout with the tree menu on the left, the appropriate panels can be positioned at the center.
For the panels that are loaded on the right side of the Frame, I am not sure about which LayoutManager should be used (hence I am posting this question). The panel will compose of input components (labels, textfields, comboboxes...), properly formatted and buttons. I believe that I can use FlowLayout for positioning the buttons in the bottom of the panel, but I am not sure of which LayoutManager to use for input components.
regards,
nirvan.

I would use a JSplitPane to separate the tree menu from the display panel with the display panel being static and a fixed size(you're won't be removing or replacing) and placing the app. panels that correspond to the selected item in the menu into the "display panel".
//             //     display          //
//   tree      //        panel         //
//   menu      //                      //

  • Recommendations for a simple, fast GUI LAN chat application? [Solved]

We now have 4 ArchLinux machines scattered throughout the house. (My wife is an Archer now!). I am looking for a simple fast GUI LAN chat application. I looked at "qchat" but it is a bit cumbersome and doesn't have the option of a small applet to the panel. Any recommendations appreciated...

I just tried it with a few machines and it works fine.
Excellent choice! Nice, light and unobtrusive. Works well, thanks for the recommendation.

  • How to call ejb from a Swing gui application client?

    Hi Everyone,
I am new to EJB and I have question for calling an ejb from a Swing GUI application client. Can anyone give me an example of how my Swing GUI can call an EJB from a SUN ONE Application Server. If anyone can give me some insight, I appreciate it.

I have looked up various sources and just can't get it to work. I know I have to use the lookup() method, but I have also seen lookups using IIOP://servename......
    Context ctx = getInitialContext();
    DemoHome dhome = (DemoHome)ctx.lookup("demo.DemoHome");
    or
    Context ctx = getInitialContext();
    DemoHome dhome = (DemoHome)ctx.lookup(java:comp/......)
so can anyone tell what is the difference between using iiop://servername..... as the lookup string and java:comp/......
and if using java:comp/ what does this mean? Does it mean that lookup() method is looking for the ejb somewhere in this directory. I would really appreciate if someone can give an example of a Swing GUI calling a ejb from an application server and how the code is actually doing the lookup in and what are each steps it goes through.
    Thanks

  • Layout manager for a Windows type toolbar

I have made a layout manager that when there is not enough room to put all the buttons it stores them inside a "subMenu" that appears at the end of the tool bar. Unfortunally the perfered size is not being calculated correctly so when the user makes the toolbar floatable it doesn't make the toolbar long enough.

This is a wierd one. I noticed that the width of a button is 22 pixels larger in the popup menu that it is in the toolbar.I traced this down to the insets being changed when the button is added to the toolbar. The strange part is that the size of the component keeps changing as you move it from the toolbar to the popup menu and back.
Anyway, I ended up changing most of you code. Here is my version:

  • Suitable layout manager for adding JToolbar?

    Hi there,
I'm new to Java Swing. I'm looking to add a toolbar to the top of a JFrame. I've created a Grid layout with 3 rows and no columns. I've placed the JToolbar in the first row. Unfortunately, each row in the grid is of equal size so the toolbar is stretched to 1/3rd the size of the JFrame. I want to the toolbar to be standard size but I don't know how to resize the grid rows. I don't want to have to add more rows to reduce the size.
Can anyone help me here? Or if you have a better layout manager suggestion.
    Thanks,
    Sean

You can use the default BorderLayout of JFrame and add your JToolBar to the North.

  • Drawing and some layout help for a simple control: thin lines and application start

I am trying to create a new, simple control. The control should act as a grouping marker much like that found in the Mathematica notebook interface. It is designed to sit to the right of a node and draw a simple bracket. The look of the bracket changes depending on whether the node is logically marked open or closed.
After looking at some blogs and searching, I tried setting the snapToPixels to true in the container holding the marker control as well as the strokewidth but I am still finding that the bracket line is too thick. I am trying to draw a thin line. Also, I am unable to get the layout to work when the test application is first opened. One of the outer brackets is cut-off. I hardcoded some numbers into the skin just to get something to work.
Is there a better way to implement this control?
How can I get the fine line drawn as well as the layout correct at application start?

The test interfaces are already defined for you - the 3rd party session bean remote/local interfaces.
It is pretty trivial to create implementations of those interfaces to return the test data from your XML files.
There are a number of ways to handle the switching, if you have used the service locator pattern, then I would personally slot the logic in to the service locator, to either look up the 3rd party bean or return a POJO test implementation of the interface according to configuration.
Without the service locator, you are forced to do a little more work, you will have to implement your own test session beans to the same interfaces as the 3rd party session beans.
You can then either deploy them instead of the 3rd party beans or you can deploy both the test and the 3rd party beans under different JNDI names, and use ejb-ref tags and allow you to switch between test and real versions by changing the ejb-link value.
    Hope this helps.

On first glance, it seems as though FlowLayout would be good, but I need to be able to add new buttons in between existing ones (instead of just appending them to the end). It doesn't seem that BoxLayout or GridLayout support this functionality especially well either. Any suggestions as to what I should use?
Can I tweak one of the existing Layouts? Do I need to make my own?
    thanks

    Hi,
you may use FlowLayout. Any layout is not responsible for the order.
you should use the method :
    public Component add(Component comp, int index);
to place the component in a right place.
    from class java.awt.Container.

  • I am looking for a SIMPLE photo enhancing application options, add text, additional images to photos crop, lines

any suggestions for simple graphic photo enhancement apps?

    Hi there,
I've just joined google for my email and like you wanted to sync my contacts and calendar.
I had a couple of problems but have ironed them out below.
First....Google have a 'google sync' program that is advertised as syncing both your contacts and calendar. This has not worked for me. I can sync my calendar no problem at all, but it hasn't worked for my contacts. On looking across the google firums I am by no means alone and indeed google employees who post there have acknowledged the problem too,
So how to get round it and sync your calendar and contacts?
For calendar go to this link
    http://www.google.com/mobile/products/sync.html#p=nokia_smart
Follow the instructions and tell the Mail for Exchange program NOT to sync your contacts.  Like I said, although it's supposed to I couldn't get it to work despite a reformat of the device twice! A google employee on the forums even went out and bought the 5800 and tried to get it to work as he has noted that people are having problems. Hopefully it'll be addressed in the future.
For syncing your contacts, go to this page
    http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=98230&topic=15015
All the details for contacts sync are laid out for the pages of setup you have for a S60 3rd edition device. If, like me you have a S60 5th edition device, the details are all there but are requested in a different order. Have a good scan of the pages and you WILL find all the info you need.
Both methods work great for me and I'm delighted.
    Hope this maybe helps
If my post has helped you in anyway, please press the 'kudos' button.
    Thanks

  • For a simple JSP/Servlet application, is JBoss better than Tomcat?

    Hi,
We have a simple JSP/Servlet/Struts application which currently runs inside a Tomcat container. Are there any advantages to move to JBoss in terms of better memory management or things like that?
    Thanks in advance.
    Niranjan

If your requirements and application is small and simple then I think that Tomcat is OK atleast Tomcat is clean and simple. Tomcat gives you slight better performance as compared to JBoss on simple sites but please google to find out how can you tune your tomcat to give you desired output.

  • Application stays in process list of task manager for about 20 seconds after application is closed

I have an application that uses Winsock for TCP/IP connections to the server. After connecting the Winsock communications and then closing the application , the application.exe stays in the process list for about 20 seconds before going away.
If I start the application and do not connect then when I close the application it clears from the process list immediately.
Any way to track down what is preventing the process from going away when the application closes down?

I installed and ran the process monitor program and it shows where the delay is but I'm not sure what it is. Below are a few entries copied from the performance monitor log that indicates the delay between 10:10:52 and 10:11:15.

  • What data binding framework to use for EJB(JPA) - Swing desktop application

    Hi!
I am developing EJB server application which mostly uses the same entities and session EJB's both for web and for desktop user interface. While JSF is working nicely, I am stuck with necessity to make decision with data binding framework to use for desktop application - I investigated:
    - JSR295 reference impementation at java.net (beans binding)
    - Eclipse JFace
    - JSR295 implementation at kenai.com (better beans binding)
    - JGoodies binding
At present I like JGoodies, but I am not sure whether I am not missing something - I guess - large enterprises should develop a lot of desktop applications as well and what binding framework they are using?

I create them sometimes but they are service tools, not part of the main application framework. Generally you keep everything on the server, web based - this keeps it secure, accessible and contained. With all the web 2.0 javascript toolkits available nowadays you can go quite far creating a desktop experience in a browser, with limitations.

  • Simple screencast gui application ?

I'm rather new to Arch, so maybe this is a nobrainer question I'm asking. :-)
I need to make partial screencasts in avi format. On other Linux'es I was using xvidcap. Simple, yet very versatile with a handy rectangle to indicate the portion of the screen to be recorded. I can make xvidcap work, but only with X11 Window Dump. I've tried to install codecs, other packages which might contain codecs, reinstalling xvidcap to make sure it picks them up, etc... no luck...
Is there anybody in here who knows how to add the codecs ? Or knows about a similar program ?
    TIA !!!
    Jan

jan_goyvaerts wrote:I need to make partial screencasts in avi format.
Why do you need AVI? It is a container format that can utilize many video formats, so requesting AVI isn't very specific.
    jan_goyvaerts wrote:Or knows about a similar program ?
FFcast is command line, but it gives the option to select the area you want to record with the mouse, or you can click the windows you want to record. It will output lossless H.264 in MKV (matroska) container, but you can easily re-encode it to whatever you need with ffmpeg.

  • Opinion about MiG Layout Manager

    Hi coders,
I am rather new to SWING coding.
I just wanted to know whether using MiG Layout Manager for creating GUI in SWING is preferable or not.
I had come across some reviews about the same which were good.
If anyone have used this layout manager, please give your feedback.
Also if any one have a suggestion to use any layout manager other than MiG (may be default ones), please post that also
    Thank you all.

Also if any one have a suggestion to use any layout manager other than MiG (may be default ones)...you seem to have the mis-conception that you can only use a single LayoutManager in an app.
you need to get to know most of the common ones, their stong (and weak) points, then, using
this knowledge (and some imagination) nest one or more panels (each a different layoutmanager) to
get the effect you're after e.g. if the frame is resized, is the component to grow/shrink, is it to move or stay put etc

  • Crystal Report Layout asking for Login Info

I have modified the Delivery Note Crystal Report Layout for Business One by clicking the Edit button on the Report and Layout Manager for Delivery Note (Items).  I then saved my modifications to a file.  Finally, I go into Business One and import the Layout for Delivery Note (Items).  When I preview the Layout it asks me for login information then continues to fail.  How dow I make it so I can print the Delivery without having to constantly log in?

    Hi Jeff,
I recently had a similar problem on an 8.82 implementation, having contacted and spoken to SAP Support multiple times these suggested fixes worked:
The request to login to the database when you open or print preview a Crystal
report is a known issue. To resolve this, I recommend you go through our Root
Cause Analysis (RCA) guide. Please see attac hed Note 1676353 on where to find
this. There are four Cases in this guide (which contain a number of Influences)
    - please go through all Cases and Influences.
    We also tried the following:
    STEP 1:
Influence 2: Case 2 is to clear all the data for login (e.g. sa and
password - delete them) and then ticked 'Integrated Security#.
    - Influence
3: #: Check the current datasource is to update connection.
    - Retest opening
the system reports on a workstation.
    - If they are still reporting an error
    try the next step
    - STEP 2:
    - Change the datasource location of
the report from OLE DB to SAP Business One type and leave the
    authentication
information blank. Try running the report in Crystal, and then import to SAP.
And also opened up the Crystal Report via the Edit button in SAP in Reports and Layouts Manager, we then clicked on the database connection and updated all the tables (even though they were the same) and these got the reports needed working. Speaking to SAP it is a known bug and they are releasing a hotfix to resolve it, but try explaining that to a customer !!!
    Hope these help.
    Regards
    Sean
