Choosing new 27" iMac: i7? SSD?

Hi I'm looking to replace my 2007 Core2Duo 24" iMac and I want to get a new 27" iMac. I will be needing the most power for (1) Lightroom (which I own and have several thousand photos in right now) and (2) a DAW like Ableton Live or Logic (which I have not yet purchased, and just want to play with). FYI I switched to Lightroom last year because making adjustments in Aperture 2 was VERY slow on my machine, and I got a Black Friday deal on Lightroom.
I intend to put 16Gb RAM in my iMac after I get it but I'm not sure about whether it's worth it to get the i7 or i5 chip. Can Lightroom currently take advantage of multithreading? (And if not, are there plans for it to?) Because if it can't the i5 and its Turbo Boost will offer better performance. Any insights on this?
Also, I like the speed I've seen on the SSDs but I'm a little concerned about the failure rate, and since it's not a user-replaceable part I don't want to (a) lose my iMac for a week or more to replace it when it goes, and (b) I'm concerned about replacement cost after AppleCare expires. Again, any ideas on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Builds like that are specific to a timeline and machine. They target that machine only.
Was your machine built before or after the retail DVD was mastered? Was it a refurb? Was it one of the first built or is the paint still wet? Did a security update suddenly come into effect? Was there a new import certification that was just enforced?
Retail DVDs, as an example are built on an entirely different timeline and target all machines, then the user checks for the most current from the mothership.
There are lots of builds floating around for lots of reasons. Apple talks in public about a few.

  • New 21" iMac with SSD; panic loop after updating to 10.8.3

I updated to 10.8.3 this morning without issues. Later in the day, the computer spontaneously restarted and now is in a panic loop. Safe boot doesn't work, but I did restart from a clone. I also started from the Recovery Disk and Disk Utility confirms the disk is fine. Here is the panic:

My recommendation would be to update or uninstall the app that is using it. Remember OS X does not have to be running the app in order for the KP to occur, it just needs to "see" it. If you choose to uninstall locate and follow the developers instructions for doing so.

  • New 27inch iMac keeps asking to choose Wifi network. How do I stop it?

I recently purchased the new 27inch iMac and i'm really enjoying everything except this little annoyance. Everytime my computer restarts or goes to sleep, it automatically asks me to join a wifi network when I start it up again. I've already selected my home network as my default network that I want it to connect to but it keeps asking me to choose a network anyways.
If I 'x' out of the the wifi selection window, it will automatically connect to the default network it's supposed to. I just want to know why it's asking me every single time I log in.

seems that the card takes a few seconds to wake up after the iMac awakes from sleep. It eventually connects to the prefered network. But the dialog box continues to show up when the the MAC is waken up...

  • Will the new 2012 iMac support 2 hard drives (HDD and SSD) like the 2011 iMac?

Will the new 2012 iMac support 2 hard drives (HDD and SSD) like the 2011 iMac?

Well, I'm not sure how anything can fit into a 5 mm depth, so I can see why they've removed the CD drive -  there probably wouldn't be enough room for the laser, LOL. Can't imagine speakers, hard drive (of any flavor), logic board and so on and so forth. Fortunately, my iMac has Applecare through early 2015 so I'm set for a while; I may check out a Mini at that point - saw that it is configurable with a fusion drive, which would make it interesting for me.

  • Black/Blank Screen with Boot Camp Win 7 Install on new 27" iMac

I'm having a problem getting Windows 7 on a new 27" iMac and am familiar with the Boot Camp Windows installation process. Here's what I've done...
    1. Run Boot Camp from OSX, partition the drive.
    2. Insert Win 7 cd, proceed with installation.
    3. Computer restarts and the 'preparing for initial setup' message displays with the Win 7 splash screen. When it switches to where it should be displaying the Win 7 desktop, the screen is black.
I can hear the Mac still running, but there's no display. It's like it's waiting for some type of user input for the intial Windows setup (haven't yet entered the key).
I've done a hard shutdown and restarted Windows with the exact same result. After reboot, I get the 'Windows was not shut down properly' message with the 3 safe mode options, where choosing either gets me the 'Windows cannot complete setup in safe mode'. And any key reboots it.
The Mac side still runs fine and holding the option key at start up gives the Mac/Win boot options.
I'm inclined to think that it's a video driver issue since the 27" is brand new. Maybe Apple used a new video card for the larger screen and haven't updated the Boot Camp drivers. I checked on ATI's site for an updated driver for the Radeon HD 4670 they say is in the new 27" model that's currently available. (not the quad core)
Is there any workaround for this? I was thinking of installing Vista instead, and upgrading to Win7 once installed, but if it's a driver thing, it would just be a long way to the same result and could have the same problem with Vista as well.
    Any ideas?

I think I figured out what is happening here with the video drivers on the new iMac's and Win7. I believe it's re-directing the video to the mini display-port output when you see the screen go blank. I installed my Win7 x64 with no issues but I had an external monitor hooked up at the time and while it was installing the O/S my iMac went black but everything moved over to my external screen. Once it finished installing then everything went back to normal after a reboot.
Not sure if that helps anyone but pretty sure that's what is going on. So if you have another monitor handy, get the mini display-port adaptor from Apple and connect your external screen before you install Win7. Cheers!
P.S. If you have one of the new iMac's and want to install the latest Radeon drivers (after you have installed Win7 on your iMac), try the following. Download and install the drivers from ATI/AMD directly. They'll try to install and fail (no worries) but now the driver/install files will be unzipped into an ATI folder on your main Windows hard drive.
Now go to this site: http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php and download the tool and use the Vista instructions listed on the main page of the URL above. You shouldn't need to download the MSXML 6.0 and I don't think you need to disable the UAC stuff like they suggest for Vista (I didn't) and it works fine. UAC is not nearly as intrusive on Win7 as it is in Vista so I think that's why it worked for me and pretty sure the MSXML 6.0 is already in Win7. Once the program has modified the mobile Radeon drivers then you can run "setup" from your ATI directory and the new drivers will finally install correctly including the Catalyst Control Center. Voila! I now have 9.10 drivers up and running on my new 27" iMac and working perfectly so far.

    Hi mshields1162,
Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
First, you may want to choose to have the sidebar displayed for familiarity:
    iTunes 11: Frequently used features
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5649
Afterwards, your device should be displayed if connected:
We'll want to click on it, and choose the Music tab at the top. Let's make sure "Sync Music" is checked:
Afterwards, you'll have the option to sync either the entire music library (for your first iPod), or "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" (for the secondary device). Upon selecting this option, four larger option boxes will appear allowing you to pick and choose what content will be synced. For audiobooks, you may need to do the above in the "Books" section. For a visual instruction on how to do this, see the following:
iTunes 10: Sync to your iPod

  • My G5 iMac died how do I move  iTunes that I bought to my new Intel iMac

I was able to save the hard drive from my dead G5 iMac and it's now a bootable image on an external firewire drive.
How can I move all my iTunes that I bought to my new Intel iMac?
BTW from what I've read you shouldn't use Migration Assistant when moving from a PPC to an Intel Mac so I don't think I want to go that route.
Any ideas as to how I can do this and not lose all my iTunes that I bought?

    i think this should work:
    1) boot from the image.
    2) use these tips to move the library from the image to another external HD. from the iMac, use the +choose library+ operation below.
    or
    3) if you have a suitably sized iPod, click here.
    or
    4) drag & drop the entire iTunes folder to the iMac. put it in the proper location on the iMac in HD/users/your_name/music (overwrite the iTunes folder there - presumably void of any content right now). when done, on the iMac, launch iTunes with the option key pressed. you will see this window
click on +choose library+ and navigate to the +iTunes library file+ (inside the iTunes folder you just dragged & dropped).
    any help ?

  • How to Selectively Transfer apps from my 24" imac to my new 27" imac

How do I selectively transfer apps from my 24" imac to my new 27" imac, both machines use mountain lion and I have a TimeMachine backup of my old imac.I have read the article "How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac" but it does not seem to allow me to pick and choose which apps I want to transfer to my new machine.

No, you can't pick and choose. So migrate all apps and then delete the ones you don't want.
Or install the apps from disk or from the app store. Copying will leave you without certain supporting items.

  • Transfering itunes music from old 20" G5 to new 24" iMac via DVD

OK got the new 24" iMac, love it. Have the old 20" G5 with all my purchest songs and copied CDs albums on it .... OK so I burned 2 DVDs of all the songs about 1200 of them and am trying to transfer them onto my new iMac well it only lets about 130 songs from both DVDs get downloaded then states "Attempting to copy to the disk "Macintosh HD" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to ."
Well the funny thing is while either DVD is in the drive I can click on any song and it will play but after the above message comes up it ejects and all but about 130 songs have been copied... Help...Thanks

From the iTunes Help search for "iTunes Backup".
Backing up your iTunes library to CD or DVD:
*Backing up your iTunes library to CD or DVD*
You can easily back up your iTunes library, playlists, and iTunes Store purchases for safekeeping. To reduce the number of discs needed for a backup, iTunes can perform incremental backups (only items added or changed since the last backup).
To burn a DVD, your computer must have a SuperDrive. Some third-party DVD burners may also work. (For more information, click the first link below.)
To create backup CDs or DVDs:
    1. Choose File > "Back Up to Disc" and then select your options.
    2. Insert a blank disc (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, or DVD-RW).
    3. Click Back Up.
iTunes burns the number of items that fit on one disc, and then asks you to insert subsequent discs to continue burning the remaining files. Don't eject a disc while a backup is in progress.
To restore backed-up files, insert a backup disc, choose File > "Back Up to Disc," and then click Restore.
Programs purchased from the Audible website are not backed up.
Discs you create using the iTunes backup feature can be used only to restore; they can't be played in a CD or DVD player
*NOTE: Make sure "Only back up items added or changed since last backup" is NOT checked.*
    Hope this helps you out.

  • Should Fuse for OS X be on my new Retina iMac?

After migrating files, folders, setting and apps from my old 2009 iMac (currently running OS X 10.10 Yosemite) to my new Retina iMac (27", Retina 5K, OS X Yosemite) I notice that there is a Fuse for OS X (Oxyfuse) preference pane in the System Preferences.  Is this necessary or desirable?  Should Fuse for OS X be removed?  If I choose to leave Fuse for OS X installed, should this be updated to the newer version 2.7.2 (installed version is 2.5.4)?

It's third-party software, not part of the OS. Only you know whether you need it or not. If you don't need it, remove it according to the developer's instructions after backing up all data. If you do need it, update it to the latest version.

  • Just bought a new 27" iMac and want to sell my 2007 iMac.

I want to sell my old 2007 iMac after having just purchased a new 27" iMac. I have tranfered all of my data to the new machine but how do I now remove all of my personal details from the old Mac without losing to upgraded operating system? In the old days you would just re-install the system disc.

Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps mentioned in this support article, take these steps:
Run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted
If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
Erase the data partition(s) with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall  the original OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by booting into Internet Recovery (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from discs or a read-only USB key, deliver those to the new owner.
The new owner will have to repurchase the software, if need be, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer them either.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")

Resetting User Password in Lion, Mountain Lion & Mavericks
Boot into your Recovery Partition by hold down the Command and R keys whilst booting.
When the Recovery screen appears, go to the Utilities menu and open Terminal.
    In Terminal, type:
    resetpassword
...a small app will open and allow you to choose the user for whom you want to change the password. If you are the admin, be certain that you choose your admin user. Type in your new password twice and give yourself a good hint. Click OK (or Done or whatever) and reboot, enjoying the use of your new, hopefully memorable, password.
    Good luck,

  • Big Aperture Library - iMac with SSD HDD - how to?

Just ordered the new 27 inch i7 iMac with SSD plus 2TB HDD , and want to plan the move from my old MBP.
I currently have a managed Aperture Library which is about 400GBs (on an external drive).  Clearly this will not fit on a 256GB SSD, but I'd like to get some speed benefit from the SSD.
So I'm thinking I'll change to a referenced library, placing the masters on the 2TB drive and the aplibrary on the SSD.
To get there, I plan to to go through the following steps, and my questions are, do you think this is a good approach?  Is there a better way?  Can you see any risks?
Make a backup copy of the aplibrary on my old Mac to an external drive
    Open it on the iMac
Relocate Masters from this aplibrary to the 2TB drive
    Close down Aperture.
Copy the (now smaller) aplibrary from the external drive to the SSD
    Open it there.
I tried these steps between external hard drives with a small (less than 5GB) aplibrary to test the concept and when I opened the copy of the (now smaller) aplibrary, all worked fine.  The copy of the aplibrary knew where the masters were.
    Background:-
My thinking is that the performance should be quite good since the library will be quite small (I'm guessing about 30GBs) and accesses to this library will be to quite small items (average in my test is 0.2 MB per item), whereas the images are quite large (up to 25 MB per image).  Hard disks are better at moving big items and SSD benefits tend to be higher for reads and writes to small items, since there is no seek time or rotation time.  Of course the system and applications will be on the SSD as well.
PS I may even try this approach on my MBP, putting the aplibrary on the internal drive and the images still external.

    Interesting!
    Thanks, Ernie.
I am expecting that Aperture will launch faster since the app will be on SSD, but I also expect that due to accesses to the aplibrary, Aperture will be much faster.  For example, the aplibrary will contain the previews, thumbnails, metadata and adjustments.  I don't really expect that Aperture will transfer images being edited to SSD, rather that it would simply read them into RAM directly, bypassing the SSD.
What I definitely WILL do is to try to observe the performance differences with the library on SSD vs HDD.
I can see this turning into a science experiment for me!
PS, I will have 12 GBs of RAM, the original 4 plus 8 more

  • New 27" iMac -- Slow Flash Video

    Hi All,
I just upgraded my 24" iMac to the new 27" iMacs that just came out. Well, now EVERY flash-based site like youtube or hulu runs unbelievably slow. Looking at activity monitor, Flash is hitting about 100-110% of my cpu. It basically makes the browser unresponsive and the video is choppy.
Is there something going on with the new iMacs? Has anyone else experienced something like this? I'm running 10.6.1 with the latest Flash 10 player.
    Thanks!

I had the same problem. Try doing the following steps. That is what I had to do on my new 27 inch Imac. This is what they had me do when I called Apple Support. It fixed my problem. Now it runs great.
    PRAM & SMC resets
    1. From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
    2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    3. Wait at least 15 seconds.
    4. Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
    5. Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
