Choosing one of two optical disk drives?

Dear All,
I am working with a new Mac Pro, Tiger 10.4.10. I have two optical disk drives. Drive number one is not burning properly and I want to choose drive number two to burn a data disk. How can I choose which drive I want to use through disk utility? iDVD or DVDStudio Pro let me choose the burning drive, but I can't seem to find this option when burning through disk utility. Any help out there?

Thanks for your replies.
No, disk utility does not recognize either drive unless the drive has a disk in it, but I can't get drive #2 to open unless I open it with a paper clip, etc., etc. Disk Utility only allows me to burn from a disk image, not from a burn folder. Burning through Finder does not give me a drive selection option either, only a burn speed and a nameselection. There must be some way to choose the drive, but nothing seems to come up unless there is a disk already in the drive, and I can't get drive #2 to open.
Any more help out there????????

127 degree celsius temperature optical disk drive, fan blowing at noisy max

Hello!
Our mac just got back from repair after nearly one year of use. the reason was a noisy fan. One fan was replaced and the other two cleaned.
After one day the noise started again. I did some diagnostics and found the temp of the Optical Disk Drive to be 127 degrees celsius, just 5 sec after start-up. In the secs befor it shows zero as a value, and then jumps to 127 and stays there. Other temps show 18-30 degrees directly from start-up and stay there more or less.
So my theory is: the heat sensor does not work, or the output of the heat sensor is misinterpreted.
question: does anybody know a similar problem, or better the right solution?

We have not heard back from the OP, but the issue also seemed to point to a bad or damaged sensor after the repair work.
I think that who ever did your repair work may have damaged the sensor or failed to diagnose the real problem! Your only course of action is to take it back and give them a chance to make it right. Or try a different Apple Store or Apple Service Center and explain to them what has happened along with your findings in-respect to the sensor!

Difficulty with pdf form trying to "choose" one of two paragraphs of text

I am creating a PDF form and trying to find a way to choose one of two groups of text that are about paragraph long. and only having the the one I choose be visible on my pdf. I tried using a dropdown list, but it would not accmodate the amount of text I needed

OK, the following is for a single check box and a single field. If the check box is checked the multiline text field will display one block of text, and if unchecked, it will display the other.
I'm goping to assume the text field is named "Text1". The Mouse Up JavaScript of the check box could then be:

Change "Text1" in the getField statement to match the name of your multiline text field.

Optical disk drive has started to make a lot of noise

My PowerBook was opened to inspect a speaker problem. Up until then, the optical disk drive was very silent; when you'd play a CD you could barely hear any noise from or in the drive -- virtually none (excluding the clicking when the disk is inserted and set). But since the time, it was opened, the optical disk drive has become very noisy. When a CD is playing, the drive makes a humming noise plus white noise that is pretty loud and even detracts from the music. The CD itself plays quite perfectly, though.
The drive is a MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8122.
What may have happened and can it be fixed, and if so, how?

I think the optical drive may not be back in its place correctly, flush with the notebook. The irregularity/unevenness is causing the disc to either rub up against something, or the motors/mechanisms inside the optical drive are making noise due to the irregularity.
I hope that made sense.

Having trouble installing Windows 7 on external optical disk drive

My internal optical drive doesnt work so i ran out and bought and LG external Optical drive. I Reinstalled mac os 10.6 and created a 45gb partition in bootcamp. When i try to install windows, at the gray screen it flashes a folder symbol and a circle with a line through it like it cant find the boot up disk in the external disk drive. The version of windows 7 im using is a burned .iso that i got from my boss so i could work on my laptop, i have tried an official windows 7 disk and that produced the same error. Im really not sure what to do other than go to the apple store and the nearest one is 100 miles away so i preferably dont want to do that. Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Sorry, it is not clear to me if you are trying to install Windows on an external optical drive or what. Read the Bootcamp installation and help manuals http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Windows needs to be installed on the internal hard drive drive.

Equium A210-1C4 not recognizing optical disk drive

I have a Equium A210-1C4 which will not recognise the odd.
The drive has power and spins disks but does not appear as a drive in MY COMPUTER.
It also is not recognised in the Bios.
I have updated the Bios and tried to install the firmware but get message that the drive is not found.
I have tried is in another computer and it works fine.
Has anyone had similar problems and is there a solution?

You have tested optical disc drive in other computer?
Anyway, if the ODD is not recognized in BIOS Im afraid ODD controller is defective. It is mainboard issue so there is no some kind of easy solution.
I don't think you can do much about that except to exchange the mainboard.

Optical Disk Drive not recognised!

Hi, having a nightmare problem with my macbook- any help would be much appreciated!
I'm using a new (late 2010) macbook pro, and today it suddenly forgot it has a disk drive. It's no longer showing up in Disk Utility, and the eject button does nothing (there's a CD in there).
I was in the middle of burning a CD in iTunes, which crashed. I force quit, restarted, then had to troubleshoot as iTunes wouldn't open- saying I hadn't permission to open the library. I deleted the library file, then started a new one, which solved the iTunes problem and allowed me to open the program. Then I noticed the problem with the disk drive, and nothing I've tried has helped.
Any ideas?

Typical- I've been at this all day and as soon as I post here the problem gets solved.
For the sake of anyone who finds this and is having the same problem- the strangest solution worked:
I re-booted, and on startup rapidly pressed the eject button until the CD ejected.
Now the drive is recognised- phew.
Weird- I really didn't think button-bashing would prove to be the solution...

Apple External Optical Disk Drive cannot start

Installed Win7 64-bit on a 2010 Mac Mini. I plugged in the MacBook Air external optical drive. It accepts a CD, spins up, but doesn't report the drive in Windows Explorer. Device manager shows a error: The device cannot start (Code 10). Aside from this, all other peripherals seem to be working fine.
I was told at the Apple store that this drive was compatible with the Mac Mini. Any ideas on how to resolve this issue or should I simply return the external drive?

This is fixed in Bootcamp 3.2, just released. Optical disk works properly.

R400 optical disk drive doesn't turn on

I have the Modelle R400 running Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) on it.
The problem is the opticale disk drive is diabled by the energy manager and it dosn't turn on.

We wanted to know if the issue with Power Manager setting or with the ODD hardware, if it is working fine after disabling the optical drive option in power manager, then I suggest you to check with updating the Power Manger.
Uninstall the Power Manager application from control panel – program and feature and restart the system. After restarting download the power manager application from Lenovo support site and install it.

Optical disk drive for Mb Air

Hi, i would like to buy external optical drive (on usb) for my macbook air (mid 2012).
Can my macbook accept any external optical drive by other manufacturer such as LG, Asus, or i have to buy Apple's only?

Hey, and how can i see if some is self-powered?
I've just watched some video of some optical drive that has two usbs to be inserted and reviewer said it doesn't need external power to run, but i do not get it. I have on each side one usb slot, so i wouldn't be able to insert both of them as that usbs are quite close one to another.
Is there self-powered device with only one usb?

Targeted Disk mode only shows one of two hard disks...

Got a new computer to transfer old info to from my dual g4 1 gig mirrored. When i set in targeted disk mode only one hard drive shows up. I confirmed both are set to cable select and only the master is showing. If I swap the drives the master is the only one that will show up. Any ideas on how to get both showing up at the same time?

Only the Master drive can be used in Target Disk Mode. See

Problems with the Fixed Optical Disk Drive

I have a Tecra A4, DVD DOES NOT operate, does not read any DVD or CD-ROM and the computer display following error message indicating: Device is not accessible the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. Any suggestions? lhidalgoa

Since Apple says that some copy protected DVD's will not function with Disk Sharing, you may need to "clone" the DVD, using the MBP, to a flash drive, and use the flash drive to perform the installation of the software.
Another alternative is to download and install the Trial version from the Microsoft Office For Mac website, and then use the activation code provided with the DVD to activate the full version install of the trial.

SSIS 2008 or 2012 Data Task: How to conditionally choose one of two flatfile columns on a per-row basis

I searched the textbooks and searchable forum posts for something related to my question, but could not find it. I'm hoping when after I describe my question that it might sound familiar to someone.
First, the context: another department using a black-box database product stopped use of one column and used a different column instead. However, the data in the flat-file export that I need to use for my own database must contain the entire
table. If it was a clean binary switch, that would be great: I could split the rows into two groups based on date and deal with it that way. Instead, there was a period of overlap while users slowly got the hang of the practice. This means that I have
two columns where a row value is either in one column
or the other.
Now, the question: I currently use SSIS to import this flatfile into an SQL Server table and use a T-SQL script in an SQL Agent Job to handle the problem.
However, I was hoping I could do this on the SSIS side while importing the data so that it appears into the SQL Server destination table nice and clean.
This is a HIGHLY SIMPLIFIED view of my system, using dummy data and dummy names. The T-SQL script describes in essence my source and destination table and what I would like to do on the SSIS side. If a screenshot of my incomplete data tab will help, I can
do it, but at this point I'm providing what I hope presents the background without presenting distractions.

- Merge Join will join by using first ID column
- Derived Column will have below expressions

Optical disk drive

I know it has been discussed before, but I've read numerous issues in numerous threads. Short version...any CD/DVD media that I put in won't read it all. It just makes a noise that it's trying to read but won't do it. I end up just ejecting. Anyone have any tips/hints before I take it in for a diagnostics run through. Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Try an optical drive cleaning disc and see if this helps.
