Choosing the Appropriate Help system

Hi-
I am trying to convert my Framemaker files (book actually)
into on-line help and I have a few questions.
1.) I should be able to import my whole book into Robohelp
once I select the appropriate help system. Is this correct?
2.) How do I know which Help system to choose? Which are
better? I am trying to construct a help system which we can put on
the customer's server along with our web based application. Does
this mean that I should be using WebHelp Pro? Does this cause
further problems for the customer (re: do they have to have a
certain server?
Thanks,
Ingrid

Hi Ingrid.
Your server will more than likely already have either Apache
or IIS on it depending on it's configuration but you do not need to
bother with this if you use Webhelp output. You just use RH ro
produce the files which are placed on the server. It is only if you
use the RH Server product to produce Webhelp Pro output do you need
to have IIS installed.
When you produce your webhelp output there are two steps. The
first step allows you to generate the output (normally to a local
directory) where it can be checked and tested. The second step is
to publish the output to the required location (in your case the
server). Both of these steps can be performed through the
properties of your WebHelp single source layout. This defines the
characteristics of your webhelp output as well as the physical
locations used for the generation and publishing.
As far as RH books go, there isn't a lot around. You don't
say which version of RH you are using but in case you are on RH7
don't be fooled by a book on Amazon which is actually for a very
old version of RH. These forums are actually an excellent source of
information as are the following sites:
Robowizard
Peter Grainge
You could also look through the tutorials on the Adobe
website and even just mess around with a blank project. The UI is
really very intuitive. Finally don't feel afraid to ask questions
here. You bound to get a response quickly from one of the RH users
who have a wealth of experience between them.

    Hi
I have 2 network architectures :case A and case B  (found architecture below)
Case A : one server connected on the switch on each site
Case B : 3 server connected on the switch behind a router on each site
2 site are connected by 2 wireless link :each wireless link have 105 Mbps bandwith (I absolutly need the agregate bandwith 210)
Site headquarter is the principal site and site backup is use to backup data located on the principal site
I use Gbit cisco  2960 switch
I use etherchannel to agregate the 2 switch port (port 1 and port 2) where the 2 wireless link are connected
I configure src-mac for case A but all trafic is send only on one wireless link .
Please help me to choose the more appropriate load balance method to load balance traffic between the 2 link for the case A and for the case B

Your Case A might be handled by port hashing, but unfortunately most Cisco platforms don't support it.
Your Case B isn't much better, as you only have 3 hosts on each side, and according to your drawing, they are behind routers, so you don't want to use MAC hashes.  If you don't have port hashing, next best choice might be src-dest-IP hashing.  Again, though, with just 3 hosts, your distribution will likely not be very balanced, especially over shorter time intervals.
To obtain best utilization of your links, you need some kind of better link bonding, such as MLPPP (unfortunately, usually won't scale to FE rates) or a hardware MUX.  Next best option, if you could route across the links, would be something like Cisco's OER/PfR which can dynamically load balance.

  • Choose the appropriate and cheapest license for Apex

    Dear Experts,
If a customer likes Oracle Apex and want his system to be built with this technology on his private server but he has problems in expensive license of Oracle Database compared with MS SQL Server.
    If the customer has:
    - Planned No. of users: 25 user - max of 10 concurrent users.
    - Server Processor: Intel Xeon(R) CPU X3440 @ 2.53GHz 2.53GHz - 64bit
    - Server RAM:  4GB (I think it is too low for his number of users)
    I have the following questions:
    1) What is the cheapest and appropriate Oracle Database License to buy for this customer to build Oracle Apex system for his users?
    2) What are the cheapest and recommended upgrades in the server processor and RAM in order to provide a good performance for the system with that number of users?

    Dear Scott,
Thank you for reply. If we look at:
Comparison between Oracle Database 12c Editions
We will find the following features not available in Express Edition compared to Standard Edition One
    1) High Availability - Fail Safe
    2) High Availability - Server Managed Backup and Recovery
    3) Performance and Scalability - Integrated Clusterware
    4) Security Defense In Depth - Proxy Authentication
    5) Application Development - Oracle Flashback Data Archive

    11) Integration - Based Replication
    12) Unstructured Data Management - Multimedia
    13) RAM - 1GB
    - Do I need to plan for some of those features in the first or second release of system? especially those related to backup?
    - Is RAM 1 GB too low for good performance according to the number of concurrent users?
    - Do I need to upgrade or replace the Server HW specially processor to have a good performance or upgrading RAM only is enough?

  • Choosing the best css system

    Hi all,
we have webservers at two different data centers in different locations with completely different official ip subnetworks.
One of our customer wants special redundancy. He asked us for load balancing, but with only one ip address or domain at his configuration (in the client software there could be no second/alternative target configured).
So we thought about buying a css system and install it at our primary data center location. If the webserver at this location fails, the css should redirect the requests to the other data center.
I know that this is no real load balancing situation, but we are looking for using the css for our webservers as real load balancer as well later.
    Some questions to this situation:
    - is the css system able to check the status of our "remote" webserver at the other data center (official ip address, no tunnels or dedicated lines between the two data centers)?
    - can we configure official ip addresses of the webservers "behind" the css system (something like: incoming request -> goto -> 212.59.xx.xx webserver1 or goto -> 217.5.xx.xx webserver2)?
    - we have ordered a ssl wildcard certificate for https that we will store on the css. Does this work or will the customer get warnings that the target system differs from the certificate system?
The customer uses a client software that communicates with a special http interface on our webservers (no browser).
Or is there a possiblity to do the routing and health checking of the webservers with cisco routers?
    Thanks for your help
    chasm

    Hi Chasm,
One quick note on the ssl bit. If you terminate SSL at the CSS one thing to be aware of is that if your webserver at the primary location fails and the CSS then uses the "sorry server" at the backup location and that traffic goes over the Internet - it will be un-encrypted.
One way to resolve this would be to deploy a CSS at the backup location that terminates SSL as well and then use a GSS to handle the domain requests. The GSS could then be configured to only send the IP of the backup site to clients if the primary was down. This would maintain encryption to each of the sites CSS.

  • Neutrual Duotone: choosing the appropriate Pantone spot

Hello everyone, I am attempting reproduce black and white photographs in neutral duotone (or tritone) on an offset press.  The objective is to produce better mid and highlight tonality, and deep shadow compared to just using black.  I also want to avoid the colour tint problems and cost associate with BW in CYMK.
As I have never worked with duotone before, I really like to know which Pantone grey(s) I should choose, specifically how deep should the grey(s) be.  I understand what I am looking for may depend on the effects that I am trying to achieve. If this is the case, what factors should influence my grey choice??  Any recommendations?
    Many thanks to the community!

Not trying to be too confusing, but my earlier suggestion (post 5 I think) is not a tritone, or a duotone. It is a 2 color separation.
A 2 color sep, like a duotone, represents two plates. The big difference is you have 2 channels instead of one.
A duotone is always a one-channel image. You can alter ink distribution with the duotone curves but it can be somewhat limiting.
Think of the 2 color sep idea like this. When you go:
    Mode: CMYK
with an image, you create a black plate automatically. This plate contributes no color information, of course.
The other CMY channels are what make it a color image. But in your case you don't want color, you need neutrality. So you can take the CMY channel information and make it grayscale.
If you do this, convert to a custom CMYK with a medium black generation. The black plate is one of your plates (make it a spot channel, "Black 2"). CMY to grayscale is the other plate.

"The problem is the two sections below the shadow are comprised entirely of screens. Screens of the gray inks would end up looking washed out.
You could counter this by forcing the curve to 100 at key points for these inks, but I see very sharp transitions between one ink range and the next. I can't see how you could get around this easily. "
What do you mean by two section below and shadow? And that they are entirely screens?  Are you suggesting that there isn't sufficient contrast in the greys when I am not forcing them to 100 in the shadow areas?  I am currently doing this already in the duotone file (I've decided to go with taht to save some money).
I am also curious about what you mean by sharp ink transition, and the possible disadvantage.
    thanks again
    Tony
It sounded like earlier John suggested segmenting the tonal range of the image into 3 separate inks. It seemed a little odd to me, perhaps I misunderstood.
Here's the thing with duotone mode. Right out of the gate, you take a grayscale image with the proper tonal range. Then you DOUBLE it up.
That means there's a good chance of it getting too dark. The only way to counter is start yanking on the curves. Which can work fine, but I've had better luck with 2 color separations. A lot more control.

  • Choosing the appropriate accelerometer

i'm doing modal analysis on violins and have been mounting the accelerometer onto the corner of the bridge.  the bridge weighs ~1.8gr and the accel i'm using weighs 0.2gr.  i thought this would be a good setup however the cable from the accel is pretty stiff so am wondering if i might be better off with a slightly heavier accel (maybe 0.5gr) but with an almost silk-like flexible cable.  any thoughts or comments would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

thanks for your thoughts lynn.  it's actually pretty difficult to do the test you mention for anything other than gross acoustical changes.  subtle things are difficult to track and i imagine this would fall into that category.  what i can do is put a violin in a testing rig, tap with an impact hammer at the bridge, and do a transfer function of the spl at the microphone.  i could do this without moving the instrument; just glue the accel on and re-test.  if it doesn't show a difference in the frf then it's probably a pretty safe bet that it won't effect the modal analysis of the body (typical weight ~400gr.)  thanks very much for the response, this is what makes these forums so helpful!

  • Help With Choosing The Technology

    Hello,
I need help in choosing the appropriate technology for the application that I'm going to be creating.
The characteristics of the system that have been decided until now:
Standalone app built on either Flex/Flash/AIR
Restricted to using the system on a single computer, hence can be a tightly coupled system
The server component of the system needs to be closed source and robust, for which im thinking something like a Java backend, etc, etc.
In a completely new environment, all that i need to be able to do is install just the AIR application and not worry about installing extra stuff for the server support.
Thanks In Advance for anyone who can help me out with this.

If you are saying you want the server component to be on the same machine as the Flex app, then your choices are severely limited due to the sandbox, unless of course you are using AIR, then you can just use the SQLite database.
But if there will be a sevrer component on another machine on the web, you could use BlazeDS, and like I said, its free and very robust.

  • Is Dreamweaver an appropriate tool for creating a Help system?

    Hi,
I have the full Adobe Creative Suite and I'm looking to create a Help system. Is Dreamweaver an appropriate tool for this, or is there another tool that would be better? I don't have Robohelp.
    Robyn

    Hi Robyn
Robohelp and most of the other help systems would be like splitting a nut with a sledgehammer, for what you describe.
You are basically talking about a search system on specific topics, for which Dreamweaver is an adequate tool, it may be worth while incorporating one of the 'smaller' open source help system into your site, in order to achieve your goal.
Your comment on posting to the 'indesign' forum is understandable but not recommenced (there is a great difference between dtp (classic graphic design) and web design / development), especially if you intend to incorporate your current 'user guide' into a web site. Any help system both for a program that you install on your computer or supply as a web site 'help' system can be constructed as a searchable html page (many are html pages now), and you can even use the a major search engine to do this for you, (providing you know how, of course). It is even possible to search pdf's, flash and audio, and provide then as a downloadable / online version as well if you so require.
The one thing you did not say in your reply was how good your programming skills are, (if not very good, do you have someone who can do this for you), as this is what will limit your help / search system. But even here if you incorporate one of the search engines own search api into a basic web page they will index and search your site for you, both as a local search, and as a web search.
Hope this helps, in some way.

  • The Help system sucks so badly it's unbelievable!

    Sorry,
I don't usually rant on these forums.
But it is unbelievable how badly things work when you hit F1 in an Adobe application these days.
The actualy help content, if and when you can find it, is okay.
But getting there is the worst experience possible.
I've been using the Creative Suite since CS2. The CS2 Help Center was a dream compared to anything we've got now.
    Here's a case study:
Using Acrobat XI, with Hebrew support (this is now a 100% Adobe product -- no Winsoft involved).
Searching unsuccessfully for the Measurement tool (know where it is in Acrobat 7, can't find it in XI).
    Click on Help.
Get taken to a website that's all in Hebrew. Did I ask to be given help in Hebrew? No. The user interface of Acrobat is in English, thanks..
I type "measurement tool" in the search box on that help page. Get taken to some stupid search-results page about Photoshop!
    For crying out loud!?!
Go back to the F1 page.
See, in Hebrew, that there is an option to change language. Change it to English. Just changing the language takes me to what looks like the Adobe home page.
So I go to the Acrobat Product help. Type in "measurement tool". Get a bunch of pathetic search results from the "Adobe community".
    This is unbelievably pathetic.
In CS2, you press F1. A very nice Help Center opens -- full of offline content.
It used to have an INDEX!! (Hooray!)
Do you realise how much better a man-made index is than search results will ever be!
If I had an index, I would look up "Measurement tool" and that would be the end of it.
I do not need online content by default.
    AARGH!
I know why this is happening, too: I beta-tested a number of CS6 products for the MENA program. The HELP is NEVER ready during beta. So at least the MENA help system has not been beta-tested. Fact.
    This sucks very badly.
    Thanks for reading.

I can only assume then that you unplug every single electronic device in your home then and cut power to all internal wiring as well, as many appliances, lights and so forth, not to mention many building's internal wiring, have a far greater risk of electrical fire than most modern solid state electronic devices.
There are now, hundreds of millions of iPhones used around the world by now, and they are not spontaineously combusting at anything even remotely approaching a frequency to cause concern.

  • Unable to 'set the default source system' to Install Business Content

    Hi,
Maars here. This is my first post hoping that in future ones I'll also be lending a helping hand.
I am trying to 'Install Business Content' under the BUSINESS CONTENT section in txn RSA1. I am doing this after 'Transfer Data Sources' in R/3 and I can now see all the data sources (under the application component hierarchy) for the source system. But I am not able to see the Info Objects in the Business Content.
When I try to set R/3 as the default source system (got this screen after clicking a icon in the standard tool bar), BW is not saving the settings ie., I set the R/3 as the default and then click on OK. If I go back to the same screen again, I find that my settings were NOT saved.
Could you please help me out?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
It seems to be a bug in version 3.5.
    Do like this:
After you open the screen to <i>choose the dafault source system</i>
Clcik on 3rd button(F6) available in the bottom of the scrreen.
And then select teh tick mark for required system.
And then click on Continue button
You have do this step before you drop the cube to right side of the cube.
Ok, even after all these steps , if you reopen the screen you would not see Tick mark u have done just before. DONOT WORRY ABT it.
Drag and drop required cube with dat flow before.
Now you can see the Transfer rules with selected Source system only in the collected Objects.

  • Creating "help" systems for users (not other LV programmers) - where to start?

How should one approach giving users a built-in "Help" system?  Users, that is, of a distributed application written in LabVIEW.
These users ideally would have no way of knowing the application was written in LabVIEW.  To them, this application is just another program.  The way the LabVIEW Help system works would be fine, but all the content would be inappropriate.
From the docs I see we can write "Descriptions" that show up in context-sensitive help when the user puts the mouse over a control, and a "Tip" that shows up when the context-sensitive help isn't even enabled.  Are these typically the only help features built into a distributed application?
In the LabVIEW Help there is an article called "Development Process Tips" discussing creating web pages that document the VIs that you create, and another article called "Linking VIs to HTML Files or Compiled Help Files.  Another discusses Creating Compiled Help Files, but refers to third-party software for doing this.  Is this a typical approach for doing a nice job of providing help?
Or is there some other way to create a Help system that works like the existing LabVIEW help but has content we create?

    Hello,
Let me take your questions in order:
    Q. How should one approach giving users a built-in "Help" system?
    A. Here's one approach I have used:
a). Give all front panel controls and indicators a description so that the context help will show information for those front panel objects, and also for relevant front panel objects a tip - this will pop-up when the user hovers over the object, and can be annoying if it's used excessively, but nice if used where appropriate.
b). Create html files, one for each "Page" of your user interface, and place a Help button on your user interface which will launch the corresponding document for that "Page."  I'm not sure what your UI is like, but basically if there are multiple front panels the user will see, a page describing each object on that panel, and the panel's purpose is nice.  If you're using a tab control in any of those panels, then a page for each tab is nice as well.
A variation of b). is to use a so-called compiled help file - a .chm file.  These are only relevant for Windows machines, so if you plan to deploy across multiple OSs, then this is out.  The reason documentation suggests you need a third party tool is because those .chm files basically collect a set of html files together into a nice document, with the usual search, index, browse etc. capabilites and we don't have a product which does this.  The LabVIEW Help on Windows is a nice example of a .chm file.  You can do something SIMILAR with just HTML and javascript, creating at least a contents page which has organized links to the rest of the pages (which themselves can contain links back to the contents page), and even include the ability to search keywords etc.  You'll find various free examples of such html and javascript on the web.
Once you have your html or compile help file, you can use the LabVIEW Help VIs to launch them.  For chm files you can open the file and direct to a particular page of the chm file, and for html files all you really need to do is launch the relevant html file in the browser of your choice.
    Q. In reference to descriptions and tips for controls/indicators: "Are these typically the only help features built into a distributed application?"
    A. No, the html or chm idea is a nice touch, and can add a professional feel to the application.
    Q. In reference to html or chm files: "Is this a typical approach for doing a nice job of providing help?"
    A. Yes, it is used internally as a standard - chm for windows and html for linux and MAC.
    Q. "Or is there some other way to create a Help system that works like the existing LabVIEW help but has content we create?"
    A. One ideas is that you could implement your help entirely in LabVIEW if you'd like.  Basically you would be launching your own VI or VIs which would show whatever documentation you wanted/created.  You could use a tree structure or something to provide some convenient navigation by topic, and even a search - you would be coding this, and although I haven't done it, it seems like it would be pretty easy to do.
I hope this helps, and happy LabVIEW programming!

  • Help System Implementation

I have a complex form whereby all input fields will all have their "tooltips". However, more text / explanation is needed.
To support this requirement I intend to have the caption (description side) of the input field trigger a help system on the Mouse Down event handler.
The use just clicks on the caption (which will be a read-only text field) and then a lot of text appears to assist them.
What is the best way to "lookup" of the appropriate help text ?
    1) Use a global javascript array with "contextID and HelpText" and use ExecDialog to perform the pop-up and display of the text ?
    2) Use a separate Acrobat document that contains bookmarks....and then go to the bookmark related to the particular contextID ?

George - I got it to work by keeping the button in front of the caption and setting it to visible with no fill, no borders
However, only the Mouse Down event handler would fire...not the Mouse Up. This would happen only if I tabbed to the button.
If I hovered over it and clicked, nothing happened because it appears the captioned text got the focus instead.
It appears I need to set the Focus to the button when the text field is entered.
Also I could not set a Goto PageView into a different document
On top of all of that, it appears impossible to scroll down to a bookmark in the middle of a page.
Finally, a Word 2010 document's bookmarks were not recognized by Acrobat XI even though the settings in the Word Acrobat Addin had the checkmark for this option.
Wow, this has been an exercise in frustration.
