Choosing the proper sequence setting??

Working on a small project with a lot of varied media (including PDF's) -
what is the best "Easy Setup" preset or "Sequence Preset" so that the
material isn't compressed? Everything looks perfect in the preview window
but nasty once I drag into my sequence.
If you coudl help, I'd certainly appreciate it.
Thanks!

#50 - Quality difference between Viewer and Canvas
Shane's Stock Answer #50 - Why is the quality different between what I see in the Viewer and what I see in the Canvas?
Well... the viewer is just that-- a viewer. It will display anything that fcp will recognize as usable video or graphics. The canvas is a viewer too, but at the pixel dimension specified by the settings of your project and sequence.
For example, if your graphic or footage is much higher resolution than your 720x480 DV sequence, FCP is interpolating down your file to fit the settings of the sequence. Usually this makes it look not so hot.  DV is a 5:1 compression working with a 4:1:1 color depth. Your pristine picture images and graphics are being crushed.
Same with picture files.  HIgh res pics now adopt the sequence settings and will render to those specs, and most likely they are not as high quality.

• Choosing the best sequence setting

Hi everybody. I'm planning a two camera shoot -- a canon XH A1 and a Canon MK2. Canon MK2 has only one codec - 30p. The XH A1 can shoot in either 30i or 24P.
Assuming the video will trade off evenly between both cameras -- is it better to edit in 24P (and convert the Mk2 footage) or 30P (and convert the XH A1 footage). The other option would be 30i.
I'm leaning towards 24p, since I like the film look. But I thought I would put the question out there in case anyone has any experience either way.
Also -- I'd be glad to hear what experience in general people have had working with MK2 footate. This will be my first time.

• FAQ: How do I choose the right sequence settings?

In general, the settings of a sequence should match those of the primary footage type in the sequence. Though Premiere Pro can mix footage of various types in a sequence and compensate for differences in characteristics, performance and quality are maximized when such conversions are avoided.
See this video for more information:
How do I choose the right sequence settings?

Sorry to say this - but you've got the wrong advice from Adobe.
You were right in selecting the profile for Epson premium glossy paper - if that's what you are printing on.
The magenta cast is most probably due to double color management, i.e. color management for your printer was not switched off. You did all the right moves , but still the color management for the printer was not switched off. This seems to be an Epson - Lightroom problem. You are about the fourth poster who has this problem with Lightroom and Epson printers. All of them said that they were sure that they had color management by the Epson printer switched off. There seems to be a hidden setting that prevails or is called by Lr.
The magenta cast is typical for double color management.
Read this - maybe it helps: http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/Epson3800/printworkflow.html#display_calibration
Don't miss the section on  "How to print images from Lightroom".
I don't have an Epson printer so can't give you further insight on this. Except ...
Disable - temporarily - all custom print profiles and templates that you may have created. Move them to a different folder where Lr does not find them. I cannot guarantee that this helps but if the problem persists it might be worth a try.
One of the above mentioned posters said that the problem disappeared after disabling an old print preset that he had created for a prior version of Lr.

• Cant fiquer out how to choose the correct sequence settings for HD

I edit for over 50 shooters whom I never have contact with. I get every possible file format & never the parameters they shot in. In FCP all I had to do was drag the footage to an empty sequence & it would automatically adjust it to the exact sequence parameters. In PP I always get either a yellow bar or red bar on everything I try to edit and the footage in the program window is always very strobey whether I set it for field or frame display. (All DV footage I have no issue with, it's only HD files)
In Premiere CS5 I am finding it frustrating. Is there a program that cam read all the important codec info so at least I can dig for a sutible sequence? I tryed gspot but it doesn't tell much & PP CS5 clip properties doesn't seem to be of much help either.
Am I missing something in my approach?

Footage like DVCPROHD (P2 MXF) and XDCAM EX show no bar in sequences with matching parameters; they'll show yellow lines (hardware MPE) and red lines (software MPE) in non-matching sequences. Footage like DSLR H.264 from a Canon T2i, for example, show yellow bars, even in matching sequences. So, you can't really rely on the yellow bar/red bar as an indicator of footage matching the sequence. Typically, the "drag to New Item" action will generate a sequence that matches your footage, though it might not always use the editing mode that matches the footage (e.g. P2 with P2 media).
Ultimately, knowing a little bit about your footage helps. I like using MediaInfo much more than GSpot for video file snooping; it much more modern, gives more helpful information (in my opinion), and integrates nicely with your operating system (e.g. tool tip popups, right-click "MediaInfo" items).

• Mail, AddressBook and Choosing the Proper "Alias"

Hi folks, Got a Mail/Address Book question.
My friend manages a youth basketball team, and he's responsible for contacting them about their schedules, emailing parents, etc. He's created a set of vcards in AddressBook, one for each child, complete with email addresses for the parents of each child. Some of these are folks that he knows already, and already exist in his address book. When he gets email from his wife, now, instead of showing as Ingrid C. in his Mail window, it shows up with his child's name Scott C., instead of showing up as Ingrid C. What's the best way to tell Mail to ignore a specific card for naming? Or set a specific card as the primary name for a given email address?

Congratulations Tom, you have Stumped the Chump. I can't even determine why Address Book selects one over the other. It MIGHT be chosing the last one entered. It doesn't prefer Home or Work.
Couldn't he use First Name, Last Name for the child and Company for the parents. (or vice versa?). He can search for the entry by either and the named fields would be the one displayed.

• Choosing the proper port when creating email accounts.

Comcast wants us to use 587. But that created some problems for me. Mail prefers 995. My email boxes were always offline and refused to go online when I am using 587 but 995 they love it. Do I have to open port 587 somewhere? Thanks in advance.

I find it extraordinary that Comcast is still not giving support to Mac. I would leave Comcast immediately - I told them at least 7 times yesterday - but I have NO choice I have to use Comcast. Free choice? Where? Not where I live. One line, Comcast.
I'll stick to 995.
By the way Linksys used to be notorious for giving no support to Mac but they have changed their ways.

• OS Uptdates - The proper sequence of installation & Software

Hello Hello
I just did a new fresh install of OS 10.4.4, from my older Black Disc Full Retail OSX, (to a New Hard Drive), and then I downloaded the Apple Updates to bring the OS up to version 10.4.9
I then re-installed iLife 06; iMovie,iDVD,iPhoto, etc., and all went well. Although I haven't actually got back into using iMovie and the other programs - all looks good.
That being said, I'm about to perform the same tasks on my freind's G5, (same identical equipment and new hard drive).
Now just to make absolutely sure, do you guys know if it matters whether we do the OS updates FIRST. Or stick with OS 10.4.4 (intially), then re-install iLife (iMovie etc), THEN after the iLife install, THEN update the OS to 10.4.9?????
Of course the iLife updates will follow as well
Thank you all
Mike

Just so you know, when it is a new hard drive it is called "Install Mac OS X for the first time." There is no "fresh install" option.
When installing on the friend's G5, you need to find out if the G5 came out before or after 10.4's as this article explains:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
If after, you should use the disks which came with the G5. If before, you need a separate license to install Tiger from retail disks, unless your friend is part of your family and you purchased a family pack.
Once you determine what you can use to install, be sure to follow the tips my FAQ* for upgrading:

• What is the correct sequence preset to choose?

Now a days I shoot AVCHD but I have video from years past that is from several different
Video cameras, on my hard drive, just waiting until I get around to editing it. How do I
determine which of those many presets that are available to choose from, that are offered when you
start a new project, is the right one?
I seem to remember someone telling me once that if you just hit the "OK" button without selecting anything, the software will assign the
correct preset to the project. I don't know if that is correct or not.

Steven L. Gotz wrote:
Actually, the preset no longer really matters much.
No matter what the preset, if you import 1920X1080 video and drop it on the "New" button, it will create the proper sequence for your video.
Yes, but it's called the "New Item" button.
You could also right click on a clip and "Create New Sequence From Clip"
You could also select the clip and choose File > New > New Sequence From Clip
You could also create any sequence, and edit the clip to that sequence and conform the sequence to the clip settings in the dialog box, as shown.
There's always a number of ways to get from A to B in Premiere Pro.

• FCP: What is the best quality sequence setting for HD Video with JPEGs?

Hello,
If I am editing digital still images that are 3696x2464, in order to make them into a HD video in FCP what is the best sequence setting?
There are so many HDV settings and I still don't understand the aspect ratio options...
please advise!

Hello,
where do I choose the ProResLT in the setting window? and What should be the Frame Size and Pixel Aspect Ratio? I am trying different options and having a hard time finding a setting that doesn't distort or pixel the image. Please help!
Additionally, would this setting maintain the quality even when the movie is exported and burnt onto a DVD?
many thanks.

• What are the best sequence settings for anamorphic?

sorry for the long explanation....
i have a project that was shot 16:9. my question is what is the best sequence setting to use so that when i export it to tape it will look right on a regular TV? on the FCP viewer it looks right with either setting. the difference is that if i choose a regular sequence setting ("anamorphic" unchecked), the video clips need to be rendered (it's green, but it will limit my ability to add effects and watch them without rendering). therefore i would prefer to use the anamorphic setting that does not need rendering. However, when i export the movie it comes out stretched (and only works with TV that has an anamorphic setting).
Can i edit the whole project with the anamorphic sequence setting and in the end copy it to a regular sequence without it becoming stretched?
i tried this on a little test sequence and it appeared to work, but i'm afraid that if the project becomes elaborate... well, last time i tried editing an anamorphic sequence (a while back, on FCP 2) i had to redo my whole film cut by cut with a regular sequence setting and then render it anamorphic so that it will look right.... it simply didn't work to just cut and paste the project onto a new regular sequence (could this have happened because i had many effects?). it came out stretched as it would when you merely uncheck the "anamorphic" box. has this been solved in the newer versions?

Your settings -- between the Compressor, Pixel Aspect Ratio and Frame Size -- are oil-and-water.
If this is going to YouTube (meaning not going to be viewed on traditional TVs) and it's mainly Photos, try using this:
Frame Size: 1280x720
Aspect Ratio: HDTV 720p
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
Editing Timebase: 29.97
Compressor: Motion JPEG A
Quality: 100% (though in a lot of cases, you could drag this down to about 75-80% and quality will not suffer)
Unfortunately, you won't get much (if any) real-time effects. Unless, of course, you're on FCP 6 or later, where you can use a ProRes compressor instead. But with your signature saying 10.4. something, I wasn't sure if it was safe to assume that. The Motion-JPEG setting should work in all versions.

• Best Sequence Setting

What is the best sequence setting when combining HDV (1440x1080) and AVCHD (1920x1080) clips for eventual output to BluRay?

nd is that the same as choosing "new sequence from clip" for the HDV clip with the resulting sequence "editing mode" then fixed at"HDV 1080i"?
Yes.
You could do this with the footage that you have most of then use the Modify>Interpret routine o nthe other stuff.

• Why is the Program Sequence cropped so tight using my Go pro video?

When I inport the Go Pro clip it is at the proper size, but after editing, it is croped at about %50
I am new to editing, and cs5.5, so be easy on me.  Her is a screen shot of what I am talking about.
Thank you.

The best option, outlined above, is to make sure your Sequence settings match the your source footage. However, there will be times when you are mixing different resolution clips together (importing stills for instance). What I do is go to Edit > Preferences > General and look for the checkbox that says "Default Scale to Frame Size". I check this and it then remains checked for future projects and whenever you import clips or stills, Premiere will scale them to fit the current Sequence size.
Changing this checkbox does NOT affect clips already imported - you can right-click each clip on the timeline and manually check or uncheck "Scale to Frame", but that would be tedious for a lot of clips, so the Copy/Paste method in previous replies is an elegant and quick solution.
Note that even though you can do the "Default Scale", this is not a substitute for choosing the correct Sequence settings! If you edit HD clips in an SD sequence, with the intent of exporting to an HD format, you have killed the quality by using SD Sequence in the workflow, and you would want to retain the HD settings and quality throughout the workflow.
I hope you find this explanation helpful

• Get Info "Change All" button doesn't keep the proper "Open With" app

I have a small but annoying problem that appears in Leopard 10.5.2 (been there since original 10.5.0 install) that I have tried to troubleshoot but can't solve.
The problem is:
-With some of my file types, the wrong "Open With" application is displayed when I view a Get Info for that file type. So to fix this, I open a Get Info window on one of those types of files, and choose the PROPER default application in the "Open With" slot. This works, and then the new proper application name now shows in that slot. So then I click the "Change All" button and apply to all files of that file type. I receive the warning that I will be changing ALL files of that type. I choose "continue" because that is what I desire.
However, once I do that, (click Change All, then Continue button), the old, wrong application name jumps back the Open With slot! So the new, correct application choice doesn't "stick".
Oddly enough, it sort of DOES work, because if I then re-click in the Open With slot, although the old, the wrong application is back listed again, if I look up above that name, then my actual desired application is listed in a list, and it has the word (Default) beside it.
So if I do actually now double click any file of that type, then the proper application DOES launch and open the file.
But why does the Get Info window still display the wrong, non-default application in Open With? And furthermore, this causes all file types of that kind, to display the WRONG icon in any Finder window. They of course display, the icon of what is in the Open With slot list.
I am having this problem only with two file types and apps. (Cubase and Pro Tools---DAW audio apps). All of my Cubase files display a Pro Tools icon, and show as Open With: "Pro Tools" when of course it should display Open With: Cubase. As stated in the Open With list, Cubase is indeed there among other programs and it has the word (Default) beside it. So it sort of works when launching files. But I still cannot get Cubase to "stick" and stay in Open With after Change All!
Can anyone offer any tips on what might cause this and what fix is needed?
Thanks so much in advance!
Wade

Well, I tried rebuilding the Launch services with the command listed but still no luck. After having no luck with that and deleting caches, etc....I also, went to my home (user) directory and in Preferences, I deleted the com.apple.launchservices.plist file. I restarted and checked and still the same result.
Also, I want to emphasize again that the file type I am discussing DOES actually launch with the correct application. (Cubase files in my example).
But it is just annoying that ALL of my Cubase files display the Pro Tools application icon, and in Get Info they are listed to open with Pro Tools. But they actually do launch Cubase if double clicked.
And one other VITAL note....if I open Get Info for one of these files, and change the Open With from Pro Tools to Cubase....then that choice DOES "stick" and retain. (if I "don't" also click Change All)
It's only when I click "Change All" that it DOESN'T stick and the list selection jumps back to Pro Tools. I hope that may offer some clarity.
Thanks for the tips but I am still back at square one.
Wade
