Choosing xServe model

Hello,
I am planning on making a order for a xServe during next week. My goal is to find the value for money balance and not buying something too overkill for my server-needs. I hope you can help!
I have a small company with 4 employees who are all connected to our Gigabit network / Aiport Extreme (n-band).
We will be using it for our primary mail accounts, daily backup services, shared drives for photoshop and webdevelopmentfiles, calender and mobile services in 10.6 Server. It will also run some VPN services for our network.
I have been looking at the BASE 2.26 Quad with 6 gb Ram, 3 x 1TB drives for my primary RAID (backup and shared drive data) and a SSD drive just for the system and applications following advice from another thread here!
Will the small xserve be able to handle this and also if we expand with 5-10 people more and some 'friends' get calendars and mail accounts. I know xserves are build for much higher user numbers, but due to the many purposes for this xserve I was not sure if it was better or necessary to buy a 8 core model.
Also I have seen some 1. gen XEON xServes being sold cheaply second hand. They look like they are in mint condition, but the prices would allow me to buy 2 or maybe three for the same price. Is used xserves a no-go?
Thank you!

I am always amazed at how low expectations are for Xserves. You spec is way more than adequate for 4 people. It can easily handle 30 to 50 as long as you don't intend to use it in a computation grid. In the role of traditional file services, your system spec is adequate. RAM is more important than CPU. However, I am still not comfortable with the SSD drive concept. Once again, there is no redundancy.
I personally prefer an Xserve with three 1 TB drives and the hardware raid card. Yes, you loose capacity but you gain redundancy. If you partition an 80 GB boot volume you have 1.7 TB of space for data and the knowledge that if a drive dies, you are still up and running.
Hope this helps

  • Installing Additional Processor in Single Processor G5 Xserve Model M9743LL

I purchased a used G5 Xserve Model M9743LL/A, that comes with a single processor. Is it possible to upgrade the Xserve by adding a second processor? The Xserve appears to have the exact same physical configuration as the dual CPU model. Does it have a different motherboard? What would prevent an upgrade?

Yes, the XServe G5 Rev B is the one with yellow DDR 2GB print close to the RAM slots. So it should accept up to 8 x 2GB RAM. You'll need the processor module, that includes the heatsink, 2 screws and the plastic heatsink cover with G5 on it. My Apple Reseller order everything for me. I'll contact them to get the spare part numbers, and i'll post everything here.
I can recall i just booted the Xserve, and after it was started up, it showed it was a dual processor model. So no reïnstalls or zapping the PRAM...

  • Help me choose a model and upgrades please.

    Hi guys,
Basically I am stuck on a air few things with deciding what models along with upgrades. I am stuck between getting the MBP 15 inch 2.6GHz or the Retina 15 inch 2.3GHz. For starters I would say I want to use the MBP for general stuff like office and more complex programs like SSPS, surfing the net downloading movies and music and playing games like Rome total War amongst many other games etc. However, I think I have read the Retina display does not even work with all games?
Due to the relative low price I'm sure I will upgrade to 16 GB worth of RAM  If get the Retina MBP as you can't upgrade them further down the line (*****). I beleve with the Retina MBP there is no disk drive, so i can't directly insert DVD's or Burn files onto disks etc, but this can be overcome by buying the Apple USB Super Drive, am I correct?
The Retina display only has 256 GB flash storage and that is kinda of low, will it more then enough for what I want to use the MBP for? What would that flash storage not be enough for?
If I get the normal 15 inch 2.6Hz MBP then I will upgrade the screen Hi-res glossy widescreen display as I like to play games and watch movies. Is it worth upgrading the hardrive the improve seed, efficientcy and power performance?
Overall what model would you say best suites my needs thanks?

Actually I have been doing further research and I personally would either go with the 2.6GHz NON RETINA MBP or cough up the cash and go all out on a 2.6GHz RETINA MBP and upgrade the RAM to 16GB  and upgrade to 768GB Flash storage, I am a student as well so will get a discount which will help.
My fears are that if I get the Retina model I will not be able to upgrade it even further, I want to keep the computer for at least a good 5 years, during those 5 to 8 years will the current upgrades be enough to keep up with the top games and programs etc? Also I have read that repairing the Retina display model is very diffcult  and it can malfunction commonly, so I am guessing I should get apple care on top of it just to be sure with this particular model?
I am assuming that they they will bring out the new models out next year and all the chinks and bugs of the current Retina model will be fixed so to speak, of which I have read there is a few... Would it be worth buying the NON RETINA MBP and then selling and upgrading to an improved RETINA MBP model next year?
Finally if i back up my files on a hardrive would I have to use the USP SUPER DRIVE to install files onto the RETINA MBP or can i directly do this without the USP SUPERDRIVE?
    Thanks

  • Where can I get parts for a Xserver model 3.1

    I need a 2nd power supply.

You should be able to get one from Apple. The 3.1 is the 2009 Xserve so parts should be readily avaialble. You can also try your luck on ebay as they come up quite often.
    All the best

Creative Decoder DDTS-00 adds superbly dramatic audio quality to your home entertainment. Designed with DTS?-ES and Dolby? Digital EX processing, Decoder DDTS-00 is capable of decoding up to 6.-channel audio to deli'ver a superior digital surround sound theater experience. Decoder DDTS-00 supports connectivity up to a 7. speaker configuration- simply hook up to any 5., 6. and 7. speaker system to enjoy spectacular playback in your DVD movies, music and gaming.
They DO mention 7. configurations, but with a bemol: the sound will be upmixed, as the Creative 7.speakers already know how to. Their is no need to have a DTS000 if you've got a Creative card that already do full digital decoding.Message Edited by Shingo-Y on -04-2005 04:3 PM

  • Choosing iMac model.  Nvidia 8800 hotter than ATI 2600 ?

I'm just about to buy a 2.8GHz 24" iMac and am trying to decide whether to upgrade to the NVidia 8800 Graphics card or not.
I'm mainly trying to make it as future-proof as I can by putting in a higher spec card now, and also I guess Snow Leopard (with OpenCL) should be able to make much better use of the NVIDIA card than the ATI one.
I'm happy with the cost involved, but I'm concerned that the 8800 (being a more powerful card) may run hotter in normal (i.e. non-gaming) use compared to the 2600.
Could anyone offer an opinion on this? Do you think I'm likely to experience more fan noise with an 8800 fitted compared to a 2600?
    Thanks
    Steve

It does run hotter, fans are still inaudible unless right next to it (ear pressed where it will feel the heat).... now here's the thing: The fan speed won't increase noticeably even under extreme load.
To answer your question, if I focus on it, I can hear the fans (right now). If I reach up and touch the top (around top left) it's warm to the touch, and I can barely feel a warm breeze coming out
If i were to fire up Second Life (game) for about 10-20 minutes - it gets uncomfortably warm to the touch along the top edge (quick), and I could feel but barely hear more air being pushed out.
Me and a friend launched Second Life from openGL profiler - she (ATI 2600, 2.8/4m) was hitting around 40-50 FPS, I was hitting 120-180 (these were on a private estate (somewhat controlled environmentals), both set to level 3 quality - kinda apples to apples as best as we could).
I can't really comment on the openCL enhancements to come, It's a severely crippled 8800 (GS) - so I'd not put a lot of weight behind the OpenCL acceleration. It's not a Quadro.
I was under no illusions that it was a gaming machine or a production 3D/graphics workstation tho - it's good enough for casual gaming/semi-pro use with some decent capabilities, don't expect too much from it tho.
There is one of the mac fan sites that tracks the average days of refresh - roughly when to expect the next big "refresh" from Apple - maybe someone else can remember where it is... (something like mid jan/late spring roughly - with some exceptions).
Last thing I'd want is to have ordered the 8800 as a CTO (not refundable) to find out 5 days later a 9800 with 1 gig on a slick nvidia chipset was replacing it. And that they had replaced the mighty mouse.
The iMac 8800/3.06 is the quietest machine I've worked with, power wise - even when it is cranked to the hilt, and it gets hot, uncomfortably hot (that makes me jittery - which is why I'm glad I've got AppleCare). I could run SMC fan control or something to keep it cooler, but I'd prefer to see if Apple's got it right.
Anyhow... Good luck with it all. I plan on selling mine - maybe not tho, it would make a cool fishtank. (I'm learning I'm just not an Apple person, tho I'm still trying).

  • Help me choose a monetization model

I am creating a Windows Phone application(category - tools and productivity). I now choose monetization model:
    1. I will show ads in the application. The user can buy off advertising. It will be the same application package. Check payment will occur within the application.  Some applications use buying the new version without  advertising. What
    it gives advantages?
    2. I will show ads in the application and limit the functionality of the application to the first purchase. The user can simply turn off the Internet and use the program without advertising. For this case, use a limited functionality
    application.
Which of these options is better?

Actually I have been doing further research and I personally would either go with the 2.6GHz NON RETINA MBP or cough up the cash and go all out on a 2.6GHz RETINA MBP and upgrade the RAM to 16GB  and upgrade to 768GB Flash storage, I am a student as well so will get a discount which will help.

  • Which Model Type to choose BPMN or EPC

    Hi
I am trying to create Oracle's Standard Business Flows in ERP Application into BPA.
    Like Procure to Pay etc.,
For this which Model Type is better (BPMN or EPC)?
What are the things to be considered while choosing the Model type?
    Any direction is helpful...
    Regds
    Ravi

    Hi Ravi,
The threads below should give you some hints:
    * EPC or BPMN: EPC or BPMN
    * BPMN in BPA 10.1.3.3: Re: BPMN  in BPA 10.1.3.3
    * EPC or BPMN at business process level: EPC or BPMN at business process level
Basically there is a comment in one of the threads, which does conclude the question regarding EPC or BPMN in a nice way:
"Use both diagram types in their strongest domains"

    Hi All,
Our Project FileNet team has developed 1 web service and they have given us WSDL of that webservice. I have to use this webservice in my java webdynpro code. We have 2 different webdynpro DC, In one DC I have imported this webservice model as Adaptive web service model, that is I choosed create model  > Import Adaptive web service model->Local file system and URL (radio button)->No logical destinatination> and i pasted the WDSL url and imported the webservice, and i have done all the relevant coding and i am able to execute the webservice in my web dynpro code.
But today in 2nd DC when I am trying to import that webservice , I am getting the error (check the URL metioned below in bold letters , copy the URL mentioned below and paste in the browser, there I have attached the screen shot of my error), now I am not able to import the WSDL in my NWDS, help me in solving this error, why this error is coming now when i was able to import same webservice some days back in some other DC. Now NWDS is not at all allowing me to import the WSDL.

  • Re: Portege R830 - Can't find my model on the Product Support list

    Hi everyone,
I recently bought a Portege R830 and was trying to find the support page for my model.
However on the Product Support list, where you choose the model, I can't find which one is mine.
My model is displayed as *R830-1056UB* on the box the laptop came in and it simply says *Portege R830* on the underside of the laptop.
There are several entries for R830 on the Product Support list, but *R830-1056UB* is not one of them.
*Any ideas how I can decide which one is mine?* (I'm worried about downloading wrong software/drivers for my laptop)
I'm not in a country with a support phone number and it seems Toshiba support don't have an email contact, so I haven't been able to contact Toshiba directly for help.
Thank you in advance for your time and help!

    Hello
I dont know which Toshiba support page you have checked but if this notebook is designed for Asian market you should find it on Toshiba Asia support page.
In which country you have bought it?

  • Securing old 10.4 xserve with hot spare - new xserve does not boot with 10.

    dear you,
I am in the murky situation of having to secure a single, non redundant productive scenario which is running on one xserve (model identifier 1,1; dual core 3GHz; boot-rom XS11.0080.B00). due to several reasons the server needs to be cloned, so that a separate xserve with a daily cloned boot-device can take over if things go south with the productive one.
unfortunately the newly bought xserve quadcore single 2.26GHz refuses to boot from the image taken from the production machine. tried to downgrade firmware, did not help. new machine crashes during startup (empty grey screen).
anybody knows any help? moving the production machine to 10.5 or newer is NO option.
an option could be two elder xserves I have here additionally. how do I find out which xserve model will boot with an image from the production server?
thank you all for any idea in advance,
    thaijay
    Message was edited by: thaijay
Sorry, failed to let you know the productive server is running 10.4.11. please let me know which other details I can post/will help us with this issue

This is never going to work via cloning.
The server you're cloning has to be one of the original Intel-based XServes. Each successive revision adds requirements to the OS to the point where they have a minimum OS version. In the case of the latest generation servers, they won't run on anything earlier than 10.5.6 (IIRC). To put it simply - 10.4 doesn't know how to drive the latest generation hardware.
In any case, cloning is rarely a good idea for servers anyway. You would do better to look at the services you're running and look at backup/failover plans for them rather than trying to clone the entire server. Many services such as Open Directory, DNS, MySQL and more have built-in replication systems that are designed to replicate their data across many machines. Other client-facing services such as AFP, web, FTP, etc. can be set to failover (where the second machine takes over the service when the primary machine fails).
Such replication/failover techniques are far more reliable than a daily clone, and they're also faster. Replicated data could be maintained up to the minute, compared to a day old data if you need to boot up the clone.
If you really, really want to go the clone route, then reverse the roles - setup the new machine as the primary server with all the services and clone this machine to create your failover system. 10.5.6 will run the old/original XServe, it's just a matter of updating your services to the newer version.

  • Problems booting my Intel Xserve.

    Hey All,
I just bought an used Apple Xserve (Model: MA409LL/A). When ever i go to turn it on and attempt to get it to boot, i get the blinking folder with a question mark. Ok not a problem. Tried booting with Option held to get me into the bootable devices. Now I am getting a mouse cursor on a grey screen. I then changed the hard drives and tried again. Same thing. So i decided to hook an external DVD ROM to the server and try to boot it off of there. No luck either.
Any help trick or tips would be appreciated. I really do not what to have to pay for shipping back on this if it is something i can fix myself. Thank you!

    Hello Angelhair,
Unfortunately it sounds as though you have a misbehaving video card. First make sure you have installed all recent updates via Software Update, that way we can be sure it is not a firmware issue. After that, you may try reseting your pram, and if that fails, then reseting your PMU may help.

  • Xserve "active cooling": Quiet when idle?

The specs for the new Xserve emphasize its improved energy efficiency. I'm especially interested in knowing if anyone (Apple?) can tell us -- when in the Finder or under a low workload -- if a new quad Xserve is about as quiet as a new quad Mac Pro, or if its noise level more similar to the previous Xserve model (quite noisy)?
For example, if a new Xserve was sitting on a desk in a quiet office environment, might an average person think it was a noisy machine, compared to something like a medium-sized photocopier or other common office equipment?
The Xserve pages on Apple's site say: "... Xserve employs an active cooling system, like those designed for desktop systems, that intelligently manages fan speeds to minimize energy use in a wide range of environmental conditions. ..."
This implies that a new Xserve might be relatively quiet depending on the workload its currently handling.
First-hand knowledge & comments on this topic would be appreciated!
    - Peter

Thank you, William & MrHoffman, for info concerning (previous model) Xserve noise levels. I very much appreciate your taking time to respond to my post.
But as you acknowledge, without having "listened" to a new Xserve in person -- and in lieu of the availability of more complete product specs -- unfortunately my question is still unanswered.
I realize the new Xserve has only just begun to ship (or will ship very soon). I wonder if any Apple employees, registered developers or anyone else has sat next to a final production version of the new Xserve and listened to it while in a quiet room and evaluated its noise levels. I'd appreciate it they could describe its noise characteristics under varying worksloads as compared to the previous Xserve and current Mac Pro.
FYI, my potential application is to use a new Xserve for on-location capture & playback of uncompressed HD video to an internal HDD array. Only capture & playback, not rendering or compression, while on-location. Small PCI cards are available for uncompressed HD video capture; for example:
    http://www.decklink.com/products/intensity/
The shooting locations are typically fairly quiet rooms, such as corporate offices, boardrooms, and so forth. To record high quality audio via mics the "recording" equipment can't be especially noisy.
Capture & playback of uncompressed HD video is typically more disk-intensive than CPU intensive, so careful selection of relatively quiet & cool-running hard drives would be important in keeping the system's overall noise levels to a minimum.
The new Xserve weighs about 10 pounds less than a Mac Pro, a very valuable difference. The new Xserve can also be configured with a solid state drive, enabling extremely fast boot-up, another very valuable feature for location work: Equipment often needs to be set-up & "torn-down" several times during a typical video shoot. In terms of transportability, a new Xserve is not much bigger than a 24" LCD monitor -- a common HD video production tool including on location. Installing an Xserve in an acoustical cabinet will make it too cumbersome for my needs.
If a new Xserve can be operated relatively quietly in the application described above, then it may find a role in many video productions.
So, I hope to find an answer to my question soon. Thanks again.
    - Peter

  • Why can I load only 8 models into a program

Hi, i have a java progrem , and i work with NCSA portfolio , or Starfire 3DSLoader (i tried them both)
and the loader , lets me load every time only 8 models simultanitly, when i load more than 8 , it just doesn't show them , until i remove other loaded models (from the 8 loaded)
what can i do to fix it?
    plz help

It's like this - I wanted to let the user choose a model , from a variety of 20 models ,
so i craeted a jframe , and within i added 20 jpanels , and each jpanel , had a model loaded into him (with Canvas3D...)... Now , when i run the program , only 8 models are shown in their jpanels , and all the other jpanels are blacked out (the model is there , but just doesn't show)...
Now when I remove a working jpanel in runtime (that has a model in it ) , then one blacked jpanel, is now working, and the model inside is shown...
that's how i figured out, he let me load only 8 models each time....
How can i solve tshi problem????????
