Choppy 3D on cs6 with radeon 5770 HD

Hi,
I'm running a mid 2012 Quad core mac pro with radeon 5770 HD. I use photoshop cs6 extensively. But 3D performace on the current GPU is disappointing. photoshp freezes if i just change bevel and angle amount. Interactive light controls aren't interactive, they react a few seconds after i drag them around. But the rest of the system works just fine even though PS halts with the spinning ball appearing every now and then. this only happens when working with 3d in cs6. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be. Should i get an nVidia card instead?
thanks.

What is the exact error message that you're getting?
Regarding the GPU, read this for details:

  • Mac Pro 4,1 with Radeon 5770 upgrade audio problem

Today I installed the 5770 upgrate from apple. I bought it from amazon.co.uk.
I installed two cards, one on my 4,1 mac Pro and one on my old 1,1 Mac Pro.
The problem is that I lost the sound card on my 4,1. No audio at all. There is no sound card in the profiler, although when i run Windows 7 64 on bootcamp I can see the sound card, the drivers work but still no sound at all. I rolled back to my 4770 and everything worked as usual. The old mac runs perfectly with the new radeon.
Both macs run 10.6.7 fully updated.
    I don't understand it
    need help...

    Hi There!
Same thing happened to me today installing a new ATI 5770 into a 2009 quad-core Mac Pro.
    Simple answer: reset your PRAM.
There is a switch on the logicboard next to the RTC battery.
Shutdown the Mac with the 5770 installed, disconnect the Mac's power cable, hold down the reset swtich for 10 seconds, re-attach the Mac's power cable & boot the Mac.
If successful you will hear the "RAM is good" chime when booting.
Your audio device will now appear in System Profiler.
    Enjoy your music!

  • Major Issues with Radeon 5770 Upgrade - No 3rd Screen and Choppy Video

I hope someone here can help.
I have upgraded the video card in my 2008 Mac Pro Xeon 2.8 Ghz machine, and the installation was fine. However I have 3 major problems:
    1. I can only get 2 monitors to display
    2. Video is very choppy - not nearly as smooth as the previous graphics card.
    3. I can't move windows completely onto the 2nd monitor.
    1. I have DVI dual-link connected to my DELL monitor 27 inch, mini display port to VGA to an old monitor I use for a second monitor in my equipment rack (I se it to keep an eye on my virtual mixer) and a minidisplayport to HMDI to go to my television, to play back video of projects I am working on.
I can't connect the 2 mini display ports without losing the DVI.
    2. The video is really choppy - moving windows around is not at al smooth and everything seems a bit laggy. Obsiouyl no such issue before the upgrade.
    3. I have the 2nd monitor on the equipment rack where I can see the levels of the various audio I have got going around. That's it's prime function, but I can't move the mixer window all the way over to the second monitor - the edge gets stuck on the main screen. No such issues before.
Does anyone know anything that might help me out of this?

Readers here have found that if you have two Brand-X Powered adapters, aka active adapters, it also works fine. These do not always require another USB. If designed recently, they can pick up a power pin in the Mini DisplayPort interface.
AMD (makers of the 5770 and 5870) lists the qualified POWERED adapters that meet their most stringent requirements. Look down the page and you will find several qualified Active Mini DisplyPort to various others, such as HDMI. These adapters are available from other outlets, such as Amazon, sometimes for far less than the Apple adapters.

The other desktop monitor will plug directly into the DVI port on the card and the 40 inch tv will still connect via HDMI over the second Mini Display port.
That will work only if you use an active Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.

You can connect a DVI to HDMI adapter or cable to an active Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter but that won't give you any audio over HDMI. You could connect the DVI displays to the Mini DisplayPorts with active adapters and use a DVI to HDMI cable or adapter from the DVI port to the TV.

  • Alittle help with dual-setup with ati radeon 5770

Hello everyone, I have been trying to setup a dual display with 2 flat panel monitors.
    1. A WestingHouse Digital Electronics "17"
    2. A Goldstar Company Ltd "23" (Main Display)
Im currently running the gnome desktop, what im trying to setup, is have both the gnome desktop show up on both monitors. For example if I wanted to move something from my main monitor to the smaller one to the left of me, I want to NOT be able to do that, and only have the mouse be able to move accross the 2. 2 Seperate desktops one 2 seperate screens. Im not quite sure what its called, Im thinking maybe its a clone Desktop? Anways, The graphics card Im using is an
Ati Radeon 5770, has 2 vga ports. I currently have the "video-ati" driver installed and works well with my main screen, but im unable to get my secondary screen (to the left of me) working. I tried going into System>>Preferences>>Monitors, and tried tinkering with the display, and tried enabling the 2 monitors and moving them from left to right, to see if that would possibly let it show up or start to function, but only the main screen works. I generated a new xorg.conf, since I didnt have one prior to installing Arch, I was following these to guides
    http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/X.Org/Dual_Monitors
    http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/X.Org/Dual_Monitors/ATI
both are very nice, but Im still not quite understanding yet. Defiantly am trying. I edited my xorg.conf a few times, but got the same results each time, just the screen going blank and X crashing.  I have here a copy of my xorg.conf, Xorg.conf.log, and xrandr output

    Thank you guys!

An xorg.conf may not be necessary, but I still find it nice to have the control that the file provides.
In looking over yours, I see several things that could be causing your problems.
First off,  I notice that you have Screen0  that is using Card0 and Monitor0.  This part looks ok.
When I look at Screen1, I notice that you are using  ATI Graphics Adapter1 and Monitor1.   I don't see entries for either of those, although you have an ATI Graphics Atapter2, but there is no entry for your second monitor.
I also notice that you are trying to use both radeon and fglrx as drivers.  As far as I know (and I don't have an ATI video card at the moment), you can use one driver or the other, but not both.
After you have these things fixed, then you can put in the Screen section in your server layout to describe the positioning of your second monitor.
All in all, the issues that you have to fix are minor,  but frusterating if you are too close to the situation.
    Good luck.

  • ATI Radeon 5770 in 2006 Mac Pro with Lion

Hit an issue with my 2006 Mac Pro when the video card died in late October. At that point I was running Lion and had kept on top of software updates. Being on a restricted budget, I have purchased and installed an ATI Radeon 5770 card from the Apple store as I cannot afford a new Mac Pro. I knew that before I did this there may be incompatability problems with this card and Lion on the older Mac Pros, and this seems to be the case.
However, having trawled through the forums it seems some users are able to run this card on 1.1 machines with Lion. So I am now wondering if I have another issue - I'd much rather stick with Lion if I can rather than revert to Snow Leopard. Now I have installed the card things seem fine with the display - the 30" cinema display no longer has blocks of pixels all over it. On boot up the screen is a pale grey, the Apple logo appears in the centre with the busy timer underneath. I also get a loading bar for about 20 seconds. This gets to about 20% then disappears. Everything sounds like the machine is booting normally but it just won't progress beyond this point. I have tried holding shift to boot it in safe mode but the same things happens.
If anyone can help point me in the right direction of what I should try next I'd be profoundly grateful!
    Vinny

I knew that before I did this there may be incompatibility problems with this card and Lion on the older Mac Pros,
Although some users have complained of problems, their wounds may be self-inflicted. Use of a non-Apple ATI 5770 or failure to upgrade to at least 10.6.5 are high on the list. The main "issue", if you can even call it that, is the card runs more slowly than its published benchmarks due to PCIe 1 slots in the Mac Pro 1,2 and 2,1.
I also get a loading bar for about 20 seconds. This gets to about 20% then disappears.
That progress bar is indicative of unresolved Hard Drive problems. You need to boot to an alternate source of software (Hold Command-R at startup for Recovery_HD if you are running later than 10.6.8) and check the SMART Status and then select Macintosh_HD or whatever you renamed it and ( Repair Disk ). Repeat until all problems are resolved or it gets stuck. If you need help, copy the EXACT error message back here.

  • Mac Pro 3,1 with ATI Radeon 5770 + 30" Apple Cinema Display Problem

    Ok guys/gals,
First of all I apologize for the thread as there have been previous posts in the past referrencing various different questions and setups, but I have a problem..  It's a little bit of a noob question so sorry in advance BUT..
What is the correct way to set up the 30 inch with the 5770?  I have an old 3,1 (early 2008) that I've upgraded with various hard disks, SSD and 12 gig RAM.  I removed the stock Nvidia Card and replaced it with this one but I am having problems that cause the Mac to slow down and the display to go all "fuzzy" or have streaking greenish lines (which you can only see against a black backdrop).
Currently, i have it going into the DVI port with the USB and FW extensions just lying around.. I've read something about needing to source more power from the motherboard to power the display, but I am not sure what to do... It's hit or miss really... every time i want to play say Starcraft 2, i need to restart my Mac Pro else it gets extremely sluggish (graphics)...
Is my Mac dying?  or am i not powering the 30 inch correctly?  If not, then I am confused between display ports and dual power (active) mini display ports.. can someone please point me in the right direction?
Apols for the long note, but am pretty good with computers but this is just annoying the sh*t out of me and has been for a while...
(PS - I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEW MAC PRO !!!)
    Thanks,
    NK

    @ Hatter
Yup prior card was 8800gt and new card is nice and snug.  10.8 was not clean install, was upgrade.  Ill try safeboot although not sure how/why that will fix any long term issues i have (which are random).. Trying 10.7 i had the same issues and was hoping that 10.8 wld fix.. Why go back to 10.6.8 when it should work in todays day and age? :(
    @ Grant
Have done that now although not sure why something like this is not in the owners manual?!
Thanks for the help/suggestions so far guys, much apprec.. Feels like my pro is dying on me slowly but surely...
    Any other bright ideas?

  • ATI Radeon 5770 w 2008 MacPro 3,1

I recently had my GeForce 8800 go bad on me. And after some research I plunked for the ATI Radeon 5770 (bought from here on the Apple Store).
I have a Dell 24" 2804WP LCD monitor, and am using the DVI port.
Before my 8800 went belly-up, I had ZERO problems with my monitor.
But now, since I've installed the ATI 5770, the monitor often "blacks out", and gives me this error message:
When I log-in via ScreenSharing (from my MacBook) and I see that there are not displays detected:
In fact, I get this same "non-display" configuration even when the monitor is "working."
Is this a driver thing? How do I go about troubleshooting this?
    Any ideas?

The message you are seeing on screen is generated by the display, not by the Mac.
The Mac does not use custom Drivers for any display. Instead, it uses a highly-parameterized Driver that is customized by the reported capabilities of the Display.
The display must report both its NAME and its Capabilities when the Mac asks for them, usually at power-on.
A common problem with displays that have multiple inputs, is that at the moment the Mac asks for this information, the display is not paying attention to the correct port, and misses the query. The Mac does not get a response, so the display stays blank. You can use the (Detect Displays) button to get the Mac to ask again, but this may require an additional display.
I do not believe converting from Mini DisplayPort will improve anything. Direct DVI should be superior. Since your display is only 1920 wide, Dual-Link is not needed.

  • Question about Parallels and ATI Radeon 5770

Ok, so I have a Mac Pro 3,1 here. I'm upgrading it to 16GB and two 7200 RPM 3TB drives which I'll run in Raid 0.
It has an ATI 2600HD with 256MB VRAM.  This card has two DVI ports.
I just purchased an ATI Radeon 5770.  I will use it with two Cinema Displays (DVI connections).
To connect the second display, I have the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter at Firmware 1.03.
    My question concerns Parallels 8.
My Windows 7 VM will be a heavy-use VM so I want snappy performance.  I was planning to dedicate 8GB RAM, half my CPU cores to it, and 512MB VRAM on the 5770.
What I was wondering about was the possibility of leaving in the 2600 HD and using its GPU to support my Parallels VM.  Is that feasible?  Practical?
    Thanks

Dump the 2600XT (put it on the shelf, don't use it)
Install Windows natively first, then you can use it both ways, natively and dual boot, plus in a VM when that works.
Another option is 10.8.2 supports more Nvidia cards and more then the 1GB.
Don't use green 3TB in an array.

  • Problems after upgrading to ATI radeon 5770 in my mac pro 2008

    Hi
    Day one
I have upgraded my graphic card to ATI radeon 5770 in my MacPro 2008.
4 hours of installing the screen went blank with noice and line, like it happens in telivison when there is no signal.
    Day two
Same thing happened when I started my computer.
does anybody know a soluton to this problem?
    please help.

Did you try Apple Hardware Test by extended testing?
I suppose graphic card is something wrong.

  • [Solved/Broken DPM] Hang at boot when switching modes with radeon

When I tried to boot into Arch about a week ago after cleaning some dust out of my case I was met with a nasty surprise, it wouldn't boot properly! Once my system got to the point where it would usually change resolutions (KMS kicks in) my displays (1 DVI, 1 DVI -> VGA) would just shut off (presumably not getting any signal from my GPU a Radeon 5770) and either my keyboards lights (caps/scroll/num) would either be stuck on or be able to be toggled but I don't believe anything was happening in the boot process.
Now me being the inquisitive kind of guy I decided I would be right on the case and ignore Arch until I got bored. I tried out an old Ubuntu 12.04 based distro and everything worked fine, but that's no way to live so I decided to install Debian testing. The install went fine, everything was happy, and I even made it to a tty! But during the boot I noticed a message saying I didn't have the non-free firmware I'd need for my GPU, so I installed that and rebooted.
Much to my pleasure the same issue didn't happen! Instead of only (presumably) locking up my GPU fans were going very fast and loud blowing a bit of extra dust out of my case for me. How convenient! At this point I decided the problem was probably the fault of the firmware, but why did it just start happening now? Perhaps I updated my system before I opened it up; I don't remember if that is the case or not however.
Anyways, Debian testing was a bust so I decided I'd reinstall Arch, so I booted up my trusty flash drive and.... the same thing happened. While I considered the possibility of hardware failure, Windows works the same as it always has and the old distro didn't have any issues aside from generally being old and terrible and my computer is yet to catch on fire. I also ran a small memory test to make sure everything seemed normal enough.
tl;dr Boot fails when KMS initiates (?) / Hardware seems fine / Maybe a problem with new kernel or firmware
Anyone else have issues or a solution?
EDIT: Disabling DPM fixed my issues, but of course I don't have dpm now

You can try building the kernel from git. There is an AUR package.
Or try the drm-fixes-3.16 branch from git://people.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/linux (http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/linux/)
For me (HD6870) it fixes the power management. But i had other symptoms: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68571

  • Westmere Radeon 5770 Apple Acrylic ACD 23 inch Display Compatibility

Will the ACD to DVI acrylic 23 inch display work with the Mac Pro Westmere processor model and the ATI Radeon 5770? Never got my acrylic model display to work with anything but a Radeon X1900 on my Mac Pro 1.1. Thinking about upgrading to a new Mac Pro. If I can't get my acrylic ADC model to work, I may have to go in a different direction from Mac.

The odd thing is that my acrylic worked with the 4870 with with OS 10.5 without updates. No openGL and/or core image support; however, but it booted into the OS. As soon as I updated to to OS 10.5.8, I could no longer boot into the OS. When OS 10.5 was introduced, there were no Radeon 4870's on the market. Thank you for the information, but I'm still wondering; however, if I can use my acrylic with the new Mac Pro 2010 Westmere's and the Radeon 5770 or if I'm going to run into software conflicts. I would really like to get a new Mac Pro. I really like my Acrylic Cinema Display. Beautiful color rendition and a reliable power supply, the Dr. Bott DVIator. It's not that old and it is Macintosh hardware.

  • ATi radeon 5770 3 monitors.

    I am running 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. OSX 10.6.8.
It came with an ATi radeon 5770. I have been succesfully running 3 monitors, however I cannot have them with the proper resolution.
    I have 1 samsung syncmaster 2433(24") and 2 samsung 933(18.5").
The 24" is connected via DVI and the 18.5s are VGA via the adaptors.
One of the 18.5s uses the syncmaster resolutions (in display preferences shows that at the top of the box) and the other 18.5 is showing VGA Display at the top of the box. I don't care what it says, but I cannot get them on the same res. I would like them both @ 1360 x 768, but the monitor that shows VGA display will does not give me that as an option.
I have switched the hook ups around. (switching the slots which the monitors are connected to, yet the same monitor continues showing VGA display.....
My 24" is the DVI 1080p setting.
    Any thoughts?

Yes. Just to go through step by step with you.
the computer has 3 video outs. 1 dvi and 2 mini dv
    I go to display properties=
                        --> dvi  --> 24"                      (resolution = 1080p)   60Hz                title of box SM2333T
                        --> vga with adaptor --> 18.5" ( IS 1360 x 768) 60Hz                        title of box syncmaster
--> vga with adaptor --> 18.5" ( I want it to be same as previous) --    title of box VGA display
X423424X"The Displays preferences should show three windows, one on each display.  And are you saying the resolution selections in each display's window for the vga's does not show 1360 x 768?  Is that a valid resolution for those displays at the selected refresh rate?"
Yes, on one of the 18.5s it does not give me the option for 1360 x 768. And yes, that is the suggestedresolution with that refresh rate.

This discussion is very helpful to me, but I still have questions. I have a similar configuration:

    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz

  • Intensity pro and Radeon 5770 ?

    Hi,
I'm experiencing some problems with my Intensity Pro that I think might be due to some incompatibility issue with the ATI Radeon 5770 in my Mac Pro 3.2 ghz (Mid 2012).
With the intensity pro card installed it takes about 5 minutes to boot, and there's nothing showing on the display until the finder appears. However I've found out I can speed it up by unplugging and plugging the MiniDisplayPort to VGA adapter back in. When I do that, I immediately get an image on the display and the computer starts to boot.
With the intensity pro uninstalled the computer boots just fine and there's no problems with the displays.
It's all a bit mysterious and I'm not sure if it's a faulty gpu or some issue with the Intensity Pro.
Has anyone had any similar problems ?
    Thanks.

Apologies for bumping up an old thread, but I am having the same issues. I had two 5770s in my Mac Pro, but have sold one and bought a Blackmagic Intensity Pro instead for use within Pro Tools 10.
I downloaded the latest drivers from Blackmagic and installed them and the card. Now when I turn my Mac Pro on, one of the three screens connected to the 5770 won't turn on unless I unplug and replug it. Practically what the OP describes above. When I uninstall the Intensity Pro, everything works fine as normal.
Was there a solution to this? Or does anyone know of one?
    Thanks.

  • Radeon 5770 - How many VGA Monitors at Once?

I've read many of the existing Discussions on what type, and how many, Monitors can be connected at once to the Radeon 5770 Graphics Card. I still have 1 question for anyone that might be able to help me out.
I have 2 - Flat Screen Monitors (?LCD/LED? Circa 2005)  --- They are connected via VGA
Ill skip a story that is to long to tell, but I woke up with a Win XP DAW (I built between 2002-2003), using the two monitors via VGA Cards/Cables. The machine was borrowed while I was gone, and is now, basically dead, or at least beyond my ability to repair. I looking to replace it with a Mac Pro and the 5770 seems to be a standard in the DAWs I looked into. But, regardless of the Video Card Model/Name, Technologoy has changed over the past few years and I've lost track of 'what' does 'what'.
My question: Will the Radeon 5770, the card that comes with the Mac Pro DAW, run both of the monitors simultaneously?
Both monitors have, along with VGA Inputs, DVI Inputs. I only have VGA Cables and I'm about to find out how much the DVI Cables will cost, though for now anyway, I'd like to stay with the VGAs.
I'm looking for the easiest, and least expensive way, to get the Mac up and running on both screens right Out-of-the-Box.
If the screens need to be updated to improve performance (?), that can always happen at a later time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm at a loss for knowledge on anything that changed, or advanced, over the past 5+ years.
    Thanks Again!
    Thankfully, cMorr

Thanks for the info! Its the 1st thing I read that made sense n thnx for the link too
I may check out the Dual-Link DVI for the bigger Monitor I'll use for Sibelius and stay VGA on the Monitor I have Gigastudio on. Again, just for now, until I can update the screens. The next project will be to get Giga on a separate Mac. I found out they don't even make Gigastudio anymore, but I had so much $$$ invested in the samples sets that it would kill me to throw it away. The guys selling the DAW are trying to push some other Sampling Software and are telling me that they dont have any programs that will run any *.gig files (?) - But that's another weeks adventure on the iNet.
    Tnx again!
