Choppy airport connection after OS X reinstall

I recently put a new hard drive in my 12" 1.33 GHZ iBook G4, which of course required reinstallation of everything. After I got everything back up and running, I've found that my airport connection, while showing full signal strength, gets little to no connectivity(pages take minutes to load, if not failing first). I'm using an 802.11b linksys router. The internet works fine when I plug an ethernet cable in to my iBook. Furthermore, a windows laptop right next to my computer works just fine with the wireless signal. Are there any setting that I might have forgot to change back after reinstalling OS X, or any updates/programs that may cause this kind of thing? Thanks alot in advance.
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Tried it. No luck again. I reformatted the drive and did a new installation of the OS. I was welcomed to Tiger and asked if I wanted to transfer info from another Mac. I said no, and I was then able to enter my basic info (name, address, etc.) myself. But halfway through the setup of the OS (right when I selected my wireless network) the computer screen went blue and that was it. No further activity for the next hour or so until I shut it off and gave up.
I am wondering if the problem might have something to do with a faulty Airport card or something. The computer goes to access the wireless and hangs.
Maybe.

  • Lose airport connection after using boot camp and windows XP

After using windows XP on boot camp and shutting down windows and booting to Mac OS 10.5.7 I lose the airport connection and have to restart or reset my airport extreme base station. My imac 2.8 is connected to airport via ethernet. Air port is operating on 5.7 version. This is a recent development and suspect it is related to updates in windows. I do not know where to start but need to solve this problem as it interrupts the other computers on wireless. Thanks Carl

I have solved problem. It was in the windows settings using airport rather than ethernet connection. Carl

  • Lost Airport Connection after sleep/shutdown

    Hi there,
I have spent a goodly part of this weekend trying to solve this problem, the time has now come to seek assistance from someone who might know what they are doing!
I have an Airport Extreme Base Station, it is connected to an ADSL ethernet router and then to the ADSL phone line. My G5 connects directly to the router via ethernet. My G3 iBook has an airport card and, sometimes anyway, connects to the internet via the base station.
The problem I have been having is that whenever the iBook goes to sleep it loses its Airport connection and to get it back again takes forever switching Airport on and off, going into Internet connect, changing around the TCP/IP settings etc. I eventually get the connection back (with the original settings), but it's becoming a real pain. The same thing happens after a restart or shutdown, it doesn't automatically connect to Airport and takes forever to get it to. A lot of the time the Base Station doesn't show up as an available network, then all of a sudden it will after various tweakings.
I have checked the airport card and it is positioned correctly. The fact that it occassionally recognises the Base Station makes me think also that the card is OK. So my question is, how can I keep the darn thing connected? I feel there is something simple I am missing.
Incidently, this began happening after I had set it up to print through the Base Station, that only worked for a short period of time. I have since get rid of all those settings.
Hope I have given enough information.
    Cheers

  • Why do I have to "set up" Airport Connect. after "sleep" or logging off?

I installed OS 10.5.4 a couple of months ago. Ever since then each time I log on to the internet or just get my mail (from Apple Mail) I get a message that I'm not connected. I then have to punch a multitude of buttons to get on again. I've found no help in any sources I've been to. We're cable with a router and an ethernet on our office computer. I haven't installed Leopard on it--I'm afraid of the problems I'll have. It's ethernet.
It's the airport MacBook that's having the log on problems. Any help from anyone?
P.S. I've assigned our NetGear to be the first on the list of connections. (I have several other coffee shop type places in the list as well.) So, the problem is coming from somewhere else in the OS system. Thanks!

  • No printers or Local Airport connection after 10.4.11 Update

Upgraded from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11 on a G5 PPC iMac. Now my network printer (connected to AirPort Extreme base station via ethernet cable) & my USB printer (connected to iMac via USB cable) are missing. Also am unable to connect to my AirPort network. In Printer Setup Utility no printers are listed & when I attempt to add a printer I get a spinning wheel with the message "searching for new drivers". This goes on for about 5 minutes. When it finally stops & I attempt to add a printer using the same settings that worked under 10.4.10 I get the message "server-error-service-unavailable".
When I attempt to connect to my AirPort network no servers are shown & when enter the name or IP address of my PowerBook (which I was able to connect to under 10.4.10) I get the message "the server may not exist or is not operational".
Seems to me these two problems are related but I have no idea how to resolve them. I've tried repair permissions, Disk Warrior, reset printing system, disconnected/reconnected all AirPort cables, power cycled printers & disconnected/reconnected their cables, restarted the Extreme base station, deleted print .plist files, ran the 10.4.11 combo installer again etc, etc. all to no avail. Any ideas?

ok, I got it fixed... after reading thru the post here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1297388&tstart=0
I replaced usr/sbin/cupsd and usr/lib/libcups.2.dylib with my pre-update backup files, rebooted, and then I could re-add my printers. Seems to all be working now.
You'll need something to show hidden files (I used Cocktail), and you'll need root access (I think) to access and replace these files.
IMPORTANT! Note that as administrator, it allowed me to move the file libcups.2.dylib out of /lib into the trash, but wouldn't allow me to copy the backup file (or the original) back into /lib... and then wouldn't restart at all without it... I had to boot from my rescue drive and copy the files with root access. So be very, very careful.

  • No airport connection after waking from sleep

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to 10.4.11 from 10.3.9 and now whenever I wake my Powerbook from sleep I lose my wireless connection. I can restore the connection by going up to the menu bar and turning Airport Off and then back on. However, I am looking for a permanent fix.
I have searched this forum and found no solutions which fix this problem.
    JP

Okay. I found a solution and thought I would share.
I needed to go into the Network Preference pane and select "Edit Locations" from the "Location" pop-up menu. I then deleted the "Automatic" location and made a new location I named "Home" and all is well again!
So again, if you experience the problem I originally posted about after upgrading or updating your OS, try creating a new "location" in the Network Preference pane. I found it was pretty easy and I didn't even need to re-enter the Airport network info or password. I just double-clicked my home network from a list of networks which appeared when creating the new location.
    Cheers!

  • Dropping Airport connection after attaching a DVI via Apple adapter ?

    Hi all
I am experiencing a strange behaviour with my new 13" MBP 2.54GHz.
Whenever I attach a DVI screen with the Apple Mini Display-Port --> DVI adaptor my Airport disconnects from the network within 2-5 min and does not reconnect.
When I connect to my old 23" Cinema Display with ADC via Mini Display-Port-->DVI(the Apple adaptor)-->ADC it works.
    Any ideas ?
    Cheers

I tried connecting it directly to the TV & got the same non-result. Of course, would like it to go through my receiver so I get the benefit of my surround sound system. Got any other ideas? Thanks

  • Bad Airport Connection After Upgrade to 10.5.2

After having downloaded and installed the upgrade to 10.5.2, whenever I start up my MacBook Pro the signal on the Airport is only one-half to two-thirds strength. If I use the menu bar area to turn off the airport and then turn it back on again, I get a full strength signal. What's up with that? Anyone have the same problem and a recommended solution?

I have the same problem.  One blog said to right click on iTunes and select Run as Administrator.  That worked, but only on that launch.  When I closed and tried to launch again, it does nothing.

  • Airport issue after update - Status grey / Connection OK - Solved

    Hello All,
Just wanted to share an issue I had that was driving me nuts, and then the final solution.
Ever since the recent airport extreme update, my airport status has been broken. The menubar icon has shown up as grey / no signal, and when I click on it, the only option I have is to 'turn airport on' which when selected does nothing.
In spite of this, though, my airport connection for my preferred network is working fine - I just can't select a new network off the list (there is no list, even in internet connect)
This has been a problem since the airport extreme update. Nothing I did seemed to help. Finally, I called apple and spent 45 minutes on the phone with them, doing the obligatory pram resets and power management resets, etc. Nothing seemed to help. We found a way to enter networks manually (go to system prefs / network / airport and add your network there) but the status problem was still there.
After I got off the phone, I went to the apple support page and found the airport extreme software update and downloaded it manually and installed it.
Manually Downloading and Installing the airport extreme update again solved the problem.
I don't know why the software-update version didn't quite work, but installing the update from the website did solve the gray / broken airport status menubar problem.
Just thought I'd share that with everyone, as it's been driving me nuts for the better part of a week.
    Cheers!

I would like to confirm that update worked for me too. Actually, I didn't need to do it manually like some of you did. It worked straight away after automatic software update.
My problem was occasional inability to connect to my wireless router. The problem would have been solved by SSID change manually on the router and reconnection.
After the latest update, everything is working flawlessly.
I have (not so known) OZENDA router and didn't have Parallels installed.

  • Airport Express seems to lose connection after a while

My main wifi connection is through an Airport Extreme. The modem is connected to it. I also have in another room an airport express that I use as a bridge for my connection and also to use AirTunes.
Since a few weeks, the Airport Express seems to lose it's connexion after some use. It's always good in the morning, and after few hours, I realize I am no longer connected to the network. The airport light is always green, I see it in my disk utility, but I don't seem to be able to go online anymore. My solution at this point is to select my neighbor's network for few seconds, when I go back on my network, it works fine for an hour or so and I have to redo the process again.
The issue seems to be only with the Airport Express because when I'm in the other end of my house close to my Airport Extreme, I never have that problem.
Any idea what could be wrong with my Airport Express? Could it be a hardware problem? I just bought it 2 months ago. Should I go to exchange it?
    Thanks for any help.

My AirPort connection worked fine when I first set it up a couple of days ago; then it stopped working yesterday: it just gives me the blinking amber light.
Strangely, though, when I use Network Diagnostics in Safari, I get green lights against Airport, Airport Settings, Network Settings, and ISP, but red lights against Internet and Server.
How can ISP be working but not Internet and Server? Also, if I pull out the the cable going into the AirPort and plug it directly into the LAN port on the MacBook, it connects to the internet fine.
    Any comments/help appreciated.

  • Won't automatically connect to Airport network after 10.4.8 update

After updating my Mac Mini CoreDuo from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8, it will no longer automatically connect to our Airport Express based Wi-Fi network. Even though the Network settings in System Preferences have not changed, and they do list it as the preferred network, it still will not automatically connect after log in.
Does anyone have this issue, and know of a solution?
(aside from the workaround of manually connecting after log in, and after waking the computer from sleep).
Background: My setup is to join preferred networks by default, the network name continues to be the one listed, the network still continues to show up in the Airport network list in the upper right corner of the screen. In essence, the Mac sees it is there but just won't connect to it. We have two other Macs in the household, both are PowerPC based, and both were updated to 10.4.8, and they have no issues. They continue to automatically connect to the Wi-Fi network we have. This seems to be with our Intel Mac only.
Mac Mini CoreDuo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Mac OS X 10.4.8

This all happens most likely due to a corrupted key chain (entry).
For instance, if you choose to keep your local Airport password stored in your personal key chain it needs to be accessible by the private Apple Airport Framework used by the network preferences. If this by any means, is not possible - the automatic login into you Airport WiFi network cannot take place.
All you have to do to get this fixed is:
    1) Launch your Keychain Access Application located at: /Applications/Utilities
    2) Open the Keychain First Aid (under the Main Menu: Keychain Access)
    3) Set the Radio Button to Repair and enter your Keychain Password (most likely your personal password)
    4) Start.....
Now after your personal keychain (name=username) is repaired it might be listed double in your Keychain List Window (it depends how you've setup the keychain). If so, NEVER DELETE ONE OF THIS ENTRIES because that's obviously a cosmetic bug in the Keychain Access Application but not harmful. Just look in your local Preferences Folder, locate the file "com.apple.keychainaccess.plist" and thrash it. Re-launch the Keychain Access Application and there is only one again.
    Restart your Mac and........
After all I think anything should be back up to how it supposed to be. :-))

  • Airport Express (latest version) not connectable after waking Macbook

Hey Guys, my Airport Express (latest version) is not connectable via airplay, when I want to connect after I shut down my Mac for a while. Since now I always solved the problem with a reboot of the airport. Is there another opportunity to avoid this problem?

Try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
In the windows on the left side: Select login for Keychains and "All Items" for Category.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
Restart or log out then back in.
    2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.)
