Choppy HD video playback - FCP X

So,
I am trying to work on a music video project, downloaded the trial version of FCP X, and am importing 1080p AVCHD videos (60 fps). When editing the video, any time I playback it runs really choppy. I am running a 15" MBP, from 2009 I believe. It has the 2.66GHz dual core i7, 8GB DDR3 installed, and the 330M (512mb) graphics card. I mean, my computer knowlege tells me that this SHOULDNT be happening. I've run similar setups on older computers without issues with choppy video, so I'm looking for an answer. Also, whenever I just play the videos back (in like VLC or something) they play completely fine. Anyways, please help!!!
Steve

  • CHOPPY FLASH VIDEO PLAYBACK WITH ADOBE FLASH VERSION 10-11

I'm  having a problem as described in a previous post re: Choppy flash videos, pictures, etc.. Youtube, megavideo any videos viewed online appear fine at first and then after 10-15 mins, start showing choppy. The audio was not a problem before, but I have noticed that it is being affected as well. I saw some posts on another forum a few days ago that recommended disabling flash player 11 in my chrome browser plugins and enabling verion 10 (which was available, but has since upgraded) and version 10 was working fine until it upgraded to 11 again. Now I have no options to revert to version 10 again.
    My system info is below:
    Sony:
    OS - Windows 7
    64 bit
    Browser Chrome 16.0.912.77
    Browser FireFox   9.0.1
    Browser IE 9
    Browser Safari 5.1.2
    Flash Player 11,1,102,55
McAfee (came with the upgrade of flash player)
This is very frustrating. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing, rebooting the browser, my pc, deleting cache files and cookies...NOTHING IS WORKING. CPU usage is between 20-35% when a video is active in my browser. I think that is normal, but I know that the choppy playback is not and it's only getting worse. Please HELP!
I hope this NEW POST will suffice as per your requirements.

When the video is choppy, how much CPU and RAM usage is occurring?  Do you have a graphics control panel that shows how much video RAM is in use when the video is choppy?
Do you have a list of sites and videos where the video is choppy?
If you don't want the McAffee add-on, remove it.

  • Choppy HD Video Playback

Okay I have a 2.6 Ghz Core 2 Duo with 4GB Memory 17" Macbook Pro. I got my MacBook Pro about a month ago and I could watch 1080p trailers perfectly no choppiness or anything. But now I've noticed when I watch them the video gets choppy at points, even videos I've saved and watch in the past perfectly are now getting choppy. What can I do? Should I go to genius bar and see if they can do anything? I have no programs or downloads going on in the background and it still gets choppy, any suggestions would be great, thanks!

I had this exact problem and the cause was Perian.
If you have installed Perian, get rid of it! It's crap and really bogs down video playback.

  • Choppy iPhone video playback after upgrading to 10.5 + QuickTime 7.6.9

    Hi,
I recently upgraded from 10.4 to 10.5 on my Powerbook G4. I used the "Archive and Install" option. After updating all software to the latest (10.5.8 OSX + 7.6.9 QuickTime), I noticed that the playback of the videos shot with my iPhone 3GS becomes extremely choppy (jumps combined with slow-mo). Based on the what's in "Previous System", I was using QT 7.6.4 with OS 10.4, which didn't have this playback issue.
I found several posts related to similar issues in the forum, and tried the following suggestions without success:
    (1) removing all third party plug-ins from /Library/QuickTime;
    (2) repair permissions with Disk Utility;
    (3) installing Perian;
None of the above made a difference. Just for the heck of it, I tried "su" in Terminal and moved "QuickTimeH264.component" to "QuickTimeH264.component.bkp". Surprisingly this made the playback a lot better (all the iPhone clips are H264+ACC). So I'm guessing somehow the QT H264 component is not working properly for me, but what is QT using instead to play those videos after I renamed the component? It shouldn't be any of the third-party plug-ins since I tried removing all the third-party stuff at the same time, and the videos still played fine. I'd like to get to the bottom of this as I'm a little uneasy about re-naming the H264 component.
I hope someone more QT savvy can diagnose the problem based on what I've tried and make new suggestions. Granted my machine is a bit long in the tooth but it's still decently powered (1.67 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, 320GB HDD) and the videos played fine before the "upgrade".
Is it worth doing a clean re-install of 10.5 as opposed to the "archive and install"? It's a pain obviously to have to re-install all the apps but I'm willing to try it if it could reasonably make a difference.
    Thanks in advance!

The problem is that you moved your Mail application to a sub-folder in your Applications folder, and you are running an older copy of Mail.
From your crash report it shows your path is to a different folder then the default folder:
    Path: /Applications/Mail Apps/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail
It also shows that you are not running the correct version of Mail (should be version 3.5 (930.3):
    Version: 3.5 (929.4)
    Check out this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2486
The short of it is that you may have two copies of Mail on your system. When 10.5.6 installed, it may not have updated Mail correctly. Look to see if you have another copy of Mail in your Applications folder, and if so run it and check it's version from the 'About Mail' menu option, it should be 3.5 (930.0). My recommendation is to remove any copy of mail that is not in /Applications (if there is no version of Mail in Applications, move the one you have in Mail Apps back) and run the Mail Update referenced in the article above.

  • Choppy Youtube video playback on Lollipop

    Hi Guys,
I've just got a new Z3 with Lollipop pre-installed and found that YouTube playback via the default app is choppy/stuttery.
I tried factory resets/ updating the YouTube app/clearing cache/turning the x-reality engine on/off, but of no avail.
The videos play perfectly fine on my much older Xperia s, so pretty sure this not on the YouTube end.
    Please advise.
    Cheers.

Youtube works fine on my Z3 settings/apps /YouTube uninstall updates .

  • Choppy flv video playback in Safari

    Hello,
since a couple of versions now Safari has taken on the bad habit of playing back Flash video in a choppy fashion. No matter what site (Lynda.com, Video2Brain, YouTube etc.), Flash movies just chop, crackle and pop.
Why is that so? No problem in Firefox, Chrome/Chromium.
Thanks for any hints to solve this!

  • Apple TV 2 choppy video playback when mirroring from Macbook Pro (Yosemite) and Macbook Air (Yosemite) but not iOS devices

Video playback is choppy (cuts out every 30-45 seconds) when air playing from both my MacBook Air 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5 running Yosemite and my husbands new MacBook Pro, but runs perfectly when mirroring from any of our iOS devices (iPhone 6+, iPad mini 3, etc.) We have Apple TV 2. This problem just started a few weeks ago, was working fine around Christmas. The problem seems to have coincidentally started right after our son tried plugging in and setting up his Chromecast on our tv. I disconnected the Chromecast, but we still have the problem. All of our software if up to date and I've tried disconnecting blue tooth, we do not have a microwave and our wifi network has a very strong signal. We have an Airport Extreme base station. Is there a solution to our problem?

    Hi leahmturner,
I see that you are experiencing an issue with choppiness while AirPlay Mirroring from your computers to your Apple TV. I have an article that contains some helpful troubleshooting steps for you regarding this issue:
About AirPlay Mirroring in OS X - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201343
    Optimizing image quality
    Resolution matching modes
You can choose between two desktop resolution matching modes that let you select which display will have the best image. When AirPlay Mirroring is turned on, select an option under "Match Desktop Size To:" in the AirPlay Mirroring menu extra.
Match Desktop Size To: Apple TV
AirPlay Mirroring changes the desktop resolution to best match your Apple TV, resulting in a 16:9 image that fills the HDTV screen. This setting often produces the sharpest image on the HDTV. The aspect ratio and/or resolution of the built-in Mac display may change to accommodate the Apple TV.
Match Desktop Size To: This Mac
AirPlay Mirroring scales the contents of the desktop to fit on the Apple TV, leaving the resolution of your Mac's display unchanged. Use this setting for the sharpest image on your Mac's display. Depending on your Mac model, the resulting image may not fill the HDTV screen.
    Troubleshooting AirPlay Mirroring
If you don't see mirroring options
If your Mac and Apple TV are on the same network, but no AirPlay Mirroring menu appears, your Apple TV may be asleep. Simply press a button on your Apple TV remote to wake it up. After a few seconds, the AirPlay Mirroring menu extra appears. If you still don't see the options you expect, make sure your Apple TV has the current software update installed. Also make sure that you have the "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" option selected in the Displays pane of System Preferences.
If the menu bar or Dock is cropped
Some HDTVs have bezels that cover a small percentage of the screen. This can result in a slight cropping of a full-resolution HDTV image. Depending on the HDTV model, AirPlay Mirroring may automatically adjust the picture size to prevent cropping.  If you are using OS X Mountain Lion or later, and you see cropping of the menu bar or Dock when using AirPlay Mirroring, toggle the Overscan correction option in Displays preferences.
    Minimize video post-processing
HDTVs often apply picture quality enhancements intended to improve the look of film and video sources. In some cases, these enhancements can lead to over-sharpening artifacts when displaying your Mac desktop. Some HDTV models have built-in settings to change or disable the enhancements for use with a computer (computer, presentation, or game modes). Otherwise, the controls for sharpness, detail enhancement and noise reduction can be used to optimize the appearance of the Mac desktop. Consult your HDTV’s manual for guidance on the appropriate settings for use with a computer.
    Firewall security settings
If you use a firewall, make sure the following firewall security options have been set to allow AirPlay Mirroring to work:
Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu ().
Click Security & Privacy, then click Firewall.
Click the lock icon to unlock it if it's locked, then type an administrator name and password.
    Click Firewall Options.
Deselect (uncheck) the “Block all incoming connections” checkbox.
Select (check) the “Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections” checkbox.
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!
    Regards,
    Braden

  • Video playback is choppy and lags

when i play videos off youtube, many times it is choppy and very laggy.  could there be a setting to improve video playback, or is it likely my wifi /internet is too slow?  although no problem on mac book, or imac??

Have you tried when conected to another network? Your performance is typical of a network problem.

  • Second Thunderbolt Display Can't Playback Video in FCP

I am looking for a solution to get my 2 Thunderbolt Displays working properly with Final Cut Pro. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Here is what I am trying to accomplish:
    -I have a new MacBook Pro (15" 2.4 GHz i7)
    -I have 2 x 27" Thunderbolt Displays connected
-I want to run FCP so that I can use 1 Thunderbolt as my main work monitor, my MacBook Pro as second work monitor and the second Thunderbolt as a playback monitor.
    Make sense?
The problem is that FCP will not allow me to select the 2nd Thunderbolt for Video Playback. It will only allow me to playback video on my MacBook Pro or on the main Thunderbolt editing monitor (which hides all the FCP windows).
When I have the MacBook Pro in clamshell mode I can get video playback on the second Thunderbolt because then it is the second monitor, however as soon s the MacBook Pro opens up it bumps the second Thunderbolt down in priority it seems.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Could you describe your problem in terms we might find useful.
    For example-
    What format is the material?
What is the model of your computer?
What version of OSX are you running?
What version of QT are you running?
you know, that sort of stuff that tells us something.

  • Online video playback is severally laggy/choppy on my macbook pro 2011?

hey guys, got a bit of an issue here. I've been noticing some SEVERE lagging issues whilst viewing online (streaming) video, from various sites, including, novamov, youtube, and others. the videos rarely stop to buffer as i have a fast connection, but yet they still seem to lag wildly. what i mean by this, is the sound will continue as normal, the the picture will freeze sometimes for a good 5 seconds or so before resuming, this is happening increasingly more and more..
i am running Mac OSX Lion (latest Update) on my:
    MacBook Pro
    17-inch, Early 2011
Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
    Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)
If it helps my hard drive space is:
    Macintosh HD
    Capacity: 664 GB
    Available: 179.79 GB
The browser i am using is the latest version of Safari, although i have tried firefox and chrome and i experience the same issue.
I have Sophos anti-virus installed and run regular scans on my system (all clear)
i really can't think of anything else which could be causing an issue here. I haven't installed any additional software for a while, not in the time frame since the error started to occur.
I am quite surprised to be experiencing such issues as lagging on something as simple as a youtube video when my £3000+ computer handles heavy applications such as Final cut pro and Photoshop with ease...
i MUST be missing something here,
I really would appreciate any help i can get here.
thankyou very much for your time

    Hi Ben...
I am quite surprised to be experiencing such issues as lagging on something as simple as a youtube video
Try troubleshooting the Flash plugin required for most YouTube video.
Quit all open browsers. I'm using Safari as a test.
Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Storage tab. Click: Delete All
Now uninstall the Flash plugin then reinstall new >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Make sure and uninstall the current plugin first.
Then launch Safari. From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
    Now try a video.
BTW... if you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video from streaming. It can also be installed as a plugin in /Library/Internet-Plug-Ins.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.

  • Any kind of video playback is choppy, eventually stops

So a couple weeks ago I dropped my macbook flat, upside down, from about 3 feet up, on a wooden floor. I died a little inside. Since then, it has been acting up. Any kind of video playback (html5, flash, quicktime, etc.) is great at the beginning, but then gets choppy, and eventually just comes to a stop. The weirdest part about this, is that I can avoid this, ONLY if I constantly move the cursor around while the video is playing! You all probably think I'm an idiot, but I have done extensive testing on this, and its definitely the mouse movement (trackpad or bluetooth mouse, either way), that keeps the video playing smoothly. As well as the video playback, my computer will sometimes not wake up from sleep, and when I do an emergency shutdown (hold the power button down til it shuts off), and fire it back up, it tells me to do another emergency shutdown, and will continue to do so until i remove the battery, replace it, and start it up again.
After this "behaviour" persisted for a few days, I did an erase and re-install of snow leopard (didn't make a difference), and I also removed/replaced my hard drive and ram, just for good measure.
Please, can someone tell me what the heck is going on, and maybe give me an idea of how much this is gonna cost me to fix (as I am clearly out of warrantee)?
    Thanks so much,
    Bobby

This is all most unfortunate...from what I read in your post you have covered everything that can be done at your end....something is damaged on the Logic Board it sounds like...as to how much it would cost only the people that end repairing will know after it is diagnosed....take it in...tell them what you have found and tried so far...maybe that will help narrow down the problem...
    Good Luck....

  • ITunes Video Playback Choppy/Laggy?

I am running a 27" 2011 iMac, 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM and AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1025 MB graphics card. I am running the newest editon of Mountain Lion.
This is the first time I have had this, however I am not impressed at all. Video playback becomes laggy/choppy, the sound goes all fuzzy and becomes out of sync. It first started with "Blue Planet", I got it about 3 weeks ago now and I simply cannot finish the series as the play back becomes horrible. I have "Ancient Aliens" and that never done anything like that on the same machine. Even the HD version played perfectly.
Now I have just rented "The Hunger Games" in HD and I'm getting the same **** thing. When I pause the video for a little it stops, then it comes back again. Like watching a video with bad internet connection on YouTube, only it doesn't freeze, it just lags out.
I don't really fancy sitting through a 2 hour film pausing it every 15 mins, if I wanted to do that I'd have just not paid for it.
When I looked at my iStat Menu's CPU and RAM is not being used to much so it's not that. It shouldn't be anything to do with my internet connection, that was the whole point of downloading it? Plus my internet is 60MB (so 6MB/s) and I downloaded the 4.5GB file in 30 mins or so. So even if my internet connection had anything to do with it, it should be fine.
Like I said I've not had problems with this before, but this is stupid. Can this be fixed? If not I need to try and get a refund as this is a joke.

    Thanks for your reply.
Ugh. Sorry. It is frustrating and in today's technological marketplace should be one of the easier things for the Mac to handle.
Received another feedback from someone. Have to try when my daughter gets up, but right-clicking on iTunes and doing a Get Info will yield the 'Run in 32bit mode', Checking this box helped another person who was floggedw with this issue
The whole thing is odd. The Choppy playback was an issue oh her machine prior to upgrading to iTunes 11 and me adding another 4GB of RAM. Ran disk utility, did all the normal things to try and solve. She doesn't have an i-device, so WIFI sync was a moot point.
I do not have the issue on my MBPro 15" running the same compliment of software and iTunes. Same movie plays fine. On hers, the issue is there. So this has to be software... settings, conflict, something...
    UPDATE
Just tried the 32bit mode on her machine and same choppy results. Back to square zero.

  • ITunes 11 HD video playback slow/choppy/stutter/skipping in OSX

    Hi guys,
I'm running iTunes 11.0.1 in OS 10.8.2 on my 2.66 GHzm, 8 GB RAM MacBook Pro and playback in HD (1080p) movies/TV shows in iTunes is slow, choppy, stuttering and skipping. Can't seem to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I was having this same problem, and found one cause.
I have an extensive library on a Drobo FS.  None of the AppleTV's in the house have any problem streaming full 1080p from it, but my new iMac does.  Choppy / laggy video play.  Movies and TV shows right from the iTunes store.  I can have 3 TV's streaming, and even a 4th laptop, all streaming from the iMac iTunes using the Drobo.  They all have zero issues.  No lag, no choppy, nothing.  iMac has the issue even when nothing else is running.  Every time.
BTW, it's happend on my old iMac and the brand new one, both with iTunes 11.
I was told to try setting up a second account on my iMac, and try playing video there.  It worked.  No problems at all.  Weird.
So I started looking at differences between the new account, and my standard.  I'd already made sure nothing unusual was running, and no processor hogs (not that anything short of Handbrake at full settings has come close to pegging out the processers on the new box).  I found one thing, that made a difference.  I had Timemachine backups, going to the same Drobo FS (though a different partition) turned on on the iMac.
Timemachine was running the whole time, and didn't impact any other streaming from the same machine, but it did make iTunes video playback of 1080p movies skip like my 6 year old daughter on the iMac.  I turned it off.... no more skipping.  I've watched 5 TV shows and 2 movies on that account, and not had another single incident.
Obviously, there is still a problem.  The iMac and Drobo have enough bandwidth that they can do all the work at the same time (or I'd be seeing the problem on the other devices while streaming), but they are not playing well together on the same account.  I've also checked the throughput to the Drobo FS from the iMac... way more than necessary.  If it were a read / write thing on the Drobo, then I'd expect other devices to see the issue when I'm watching something on the iMac that is skipping, but there was still no skipping on any other device at that same time...
But, as I said, I found the root cause in my case.  I can turn off Timemachine backups while I'm watching a movie on the iMac, or I can move where I write the Timemachine backups to (going to try this over the weekend to be sure it works).  If moving the Timemachine backup to a different drive doesn't work, it's a bigger problem.
I'd really love to see Apple fix this and the issue where I have to turn iTunes on in 32bit mode when using an external library (of it gives the funky quicktime error until you delete and readd the movie).
Hope this helps some of you, if not all.

  • Choppy Video Playback - OS X 10.8 - Player Version 11.5.502.110

Video playback is choppy using the current Macintosh Flash Player, version 11.5.502.110. It has been for some time, with the last few versions of Flash.
View any video at cnet.com or foxnews.com and the problem is readily apparent.
Downgrading to version 10.3.183.18 solves the problem.

    Thank-you for your reply, Chris!
No, I'm afraid disabling hardware acceleration and restarting Safari didn't help.
The problem occurs in both Firefox 16.0.2 and Safari 6.0.2. I'm using OS X 10.8.2.
Downgrading to 10.3.183.18, as mentioned, solves the problem in Firefox - Safari won't let me play video using an older version of Flash.
