Choppy Play back

Hello;
I have a tiered system with an acquisition cluster,
distribution cluster, and then finally an edge system. I am doing a
live stream from an On2 Flix live encoder the streams is supposed
to be 24x7. My client sees choppy behavior in the video on their
site after long periods of playback our work around has been to
just change the stream name. This seems to clear up the choppy
behavior. I see the problems all the way back at the acquisition
server level almost like it is coming from the client. I call the
client and he explains he is not seeing it on the actual Flix
encoder. I am running 2.0.4r79 on the acquisition cluster and see
very little traffic on the box maybe 10 Mbps tops memory and CPU
utilization less then 15%.
I am going to run a test tonight using the On2 Flix locally
from a known good network feed for additional testing. If anyone
else has some input I would be glad to hear it. The best we have
done so far is about 20 hours and that was with us pulling the
stream from his WOWZA server to two servers one on each coast.
Best regards,
James

We are having the same issue.. but it is with all streams
including the low bandwidth stuff. I am looking for a doc for
tweaks that may help. Our system is much more straight forward than
yours.

  • Video playing back choppy even in Source window

I've been working on a project for a while and wanted to back it up to a hard drive. We have an internal hard drive bay so I shut the computer down, put in a 500GB hard drive, backed up the project, shut the computer down and removed the hard drive.
Now, all of the sudden, my footage is playing back choppy. I probably shouldn't say it's playing back choppy because what happens is I'll take a raw clip, load it into the Source window start it playing and it plays fine for about 8 seconds, then it starts stuttering, the audio drops out completely and then it completely freezes up. It doesn't seem to matter what clip I'm using and all of these clips used to play back fine.
We are using a Matrox RT.X2 card and the footage is on four 500GB hard drives that are in a RAID 5 array, so I have a total of 1.5TB of space. Would defraging the drives make a difference?
I'm not sure why this has just started when nothing was added or taken away from the project.
The computer's specs are as follows:
    Win XP Pro
    2.66Ghz Core2 Quad
    4GB Ram
    GeForce 7600GT
    Matrox RT.X2 Card
300GB SATA HD for Operating System
4x 500GB SATA HDs in RAID 5 array for Footage

According to the Intel Matrix Storage Console (which is the software that monitors and controls the RAID array on this motherboard, an Intel D975XBX2), the raid is working properly and is not being rebuilt.
To check and make sure the software was working properly I shut down the computer, unplugged one of the hard drives in the array and restarted the computer. The monitoring software reported that the array was missing a hard drive.
I have seen before when the array was being rebuilt. It will state this in the monitoring software. But the software is reporting all is well.
So I backed up everything and deleted the RAID array. I recreated the RAID array and was still getting the same problem. To test every time, I have a 900MB file that only takes about 20 seconds to transfer between two single SATA hard drives in the same computer. When I tried copying this to the RAID array it said it was going to take about 30-40 minutes!
I removed my boot drive and put in a spare that we had, formatted it and installed Windows XP, hoping that the problem was in the operating system. After installing the mobo drivers I tried copying the 900MB file and again it was going to take 30-40 minutes.
I deleted the RAID array and just made each of the 4 500GB hard drives a separate drive. I formatted each of them and tried copying the 900MB file to each. Each one of them only took about 20 seconds on their own to copy the file.
SO, I'm assuming that the problem is the RAID controller on the motherboard. The motherboard has an Intel ICH7R/DH SATA RAID controller. I purchased a Rosewill RC-209-EX PCI controller from Newegg.com and I'm really hoping this will fix my problems. I'm having it overnighted (which costs more than the controller itself) so I'll put it in tomorrow.
If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know.

  • How to play back AVCHD video files without jerkiness result?

Hi all, I have an iMac 27" 3.06Ghz as well as the new MacBook Air 13 1.86Ghz, and both have 4GB of RAM. When I tried to play back AVCHD video files (*.mts) recorded from my Canon HF200 HD camcorder, the play back is always jerky and choppy. I have tried various software like Perian for QT, VLC, MPlayer Extended, all have the same result. However, I can play back other 1080p files like MKV and MOV just fine.
Is the jerkiness problem that I am seeing due to underpowered hardware? or is it I am not using the correct software? Note that I am not trying to edit HD videos, I just want to be able to play them back smoothly. I can play the same files on Windows 7 natively without any issues.
I am curious if any of you have the same problem. Please help!
    Thanks in advance.

    Swaza,
Just thought I would jump in and share some experiences with .tod and .mod files.
I too have the JVC GZ-HD7 camera and I can confirm that the new version of the MPEG-SC 1.93beta will open and convert .tod to .mov for use with iMovieHD. I am not sure that the files can be used with iMovie08 since I have not tried, but it will work in iMovieHD just like any other qt or .mov file import.
Also, you can use the QTpro plugin that came with the camera (should be on the CD as the only MAC software available.) This will allow you to open the files in QT and convert them to any other format needed. This plugin unfortunately does not allow QTpro to open the older .mod files of previous JVC cameras. For that you can still use MPEG-SC.
In my experiences over the last few weeks, having mistakenly dumped all of my footage onto my hdd as I used to do with my older JVC cameras, I am now stuck with 3 hours of footage on my HDD as .tod files. I have been struggling to find the right blend of codec type, compression amount, fps, and quality to convert these files in an acceptable resolution (1920x1080 full - another mistake since iMovie08 will not import this quality but will import the 1440 CBR mode.) Converting these files is a nightmare and has become a stain on my otherwise wonderfu lexperience with this new camera (It is an awesome camera despite what negative stuff the "Canon fanboys" are saying!) It takes an unbelievably long time to convert. And you will find that when viewing these files in QT either as .tod or even after converting to .mov, they will be jerky and stutter. I believe this is more to the fact that the files are just really huge. Playback inside of iMovie06HD was perfect for me though.
Hope this helps out and I hope others may offer solutions as to what codecs they are using and what settings they are using to keep the quality as high as possible when converting these files.

  • MTS files jerky when played back in the Editor of Premiere Elements 12

    Hi ATR
I know there is only you that helps us Adobe users with problems!!
I have now got Photoshop 12 and premiere Elements 12 set up yey!! so now I want to start my editing
So I go into Premiere Elements Editor and choose my files which are on my hard drive
These are MTS files that have been taken with my Sony Cybershot DSCHX20V however when I try to play back the videos they are jerky so I am unable to edit them
Now I know I asked this question before when I had the trial of 13 and you got it working for me but I cant find the answer
There is no orange or green line so I am unable to render the videos
In the project settings it says display format as 25fps Timecode
Frame size 1920 hoizontal 1080 vertical
    Hope you can help
    Jilly

    Morning ATR
The camera was set for AVCHD and so the videos that were taken are in the format AVCHD mts. I since changed it to mp4 format but the videos that I want ti edit are in mts format and like I mentioned they are jerky
When I am in the organiser of Premier 12 and I can hear the playback so that is ok but its jerky as well as the editor. I've also noticed that playing back in the organizer, the playback is very pixelated?
    1. Forced Timeline Rendering
i did exactly what you said ATR and changed the time stretch to 99% and that worked perfectly!! You're a genius!
    2. AVCHD.mts versus AVCHD.mp4
I found an MP4 format video and added it to my timeline with the MTS files and that one play ok. The time stretch on that file is at 100% so do I have to keep changing this to 99% all the time or only when its choppy and jerky?
Step 3 you asked me to do the below
    From an AVCHD.mts 1920 x 1080 @ 25 progressive frames per second) project, export to Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with Presets = MP4 H.264 1920 x 1080p25 and
tell us if the playback is smooth.
    Then, from an AVCHD.mp4 1920 x 1080@ 25 progressive frames per second) project, export to Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with Presets = MP4 H.264 1920 x 1080p25.
Then compare the smoothness of the playback of each.
From looking at my project settings the timebase is showing 50.00 frames/second?
You have said from a AVCHD.mts 1920 x 1080 @ 25 progressive frames per second) project? Do I need to change this now?
Would you be able to tell me how to do a screenshot in windows 8 please? It would be so much easier but I am struggling to do it on the website itself
    Thanks ATR
    Jilly

  • Exported movie plays back fast

Hi all, new poster on the apple discusions forum but wondered if anybody out there could help me.
I created my first movie from iMovie last night, the footage is HD from A Sanyo Xacti 1000 camera (had problems getting the footage in the night before but thanks to these boards found a solution)
Anyway cut a quick movie exported to AppleTV, created my m4v file, played back on ATV and the video footage appears to be running fast, almost like it's dropping frames but smooth. Audio was fine too... Anyone got any bright ideas?
    Thanks tim

    Hi.
Best thing to do is to set Imovie'08's movie format to NTSC, even though the TV standard in the UK is PAL.
But since you work ith non intelaced footaged, this will just change the frame rate iMovie works with to 30fps (29.97 exactly) instead of 25.
Since all Xactis shoot at 29.97 or 59.94, this setting is much better for them.
And it totally eliminated any choppiness effect for me.
Beware though: changing the PAL/NTSC setting of iMovie from PAL to NTSC made very strange results in edited movies (offset edits) when iMovie came out. I do not know if this has been corrected in the latest 7.1.1 version.
But you can always go back to your previous PAL setting and this eliminates all side effects, so there is no real downside trying.
I also have an HD1000 now and have had no problem with 60fps footage- and I now know how to output from iMovie at 60fps
Not sure if this has to do with it, but I do not use iMovie's import feature:
I create a folder for the new event in the ~/Movies/iMovie Events/, copy the .mp4s from the HD1000 to it, and then launch iMovie. IMovie then creates thumbnails and everything.
    Hope this helps.
I miss the good old times of miniDV, when everything just worked!

  • Issues with play back in the time line

I am having issues with play back in the time line.
am working with footage captured off a DVCAM Tape in a DV/DVCPRO NTSC Time line.
My settings are set to match the source footage so I dont have to render. What ends up happening is the footage at times plays fine and smooth and then out of no where it will start playing choppy. like its lagging. But the Audio stay fine. I use to have to problem before but then it stopped.
Now its back and I can not figure out why it does this. Usually a restart of the system would help solve it but now it still keeps coming back.
i have tried different settings in the RT menu and still seem to be having the same problem.
i am running the footage of 3 1TB drives in Raid0 and the System has 16GB of Ram. So I dont see this being the issue.
    any ideas?

of course not, the system boots from a 320GB Western Digital Hard Drive. (the one that came with the system)
I have a feeling that its not the Hard Drive, but no idea what it could be.

  • I have recently upgraded my iMac Intel G5 iSight to OS 10.6.8 and now the internal mic does not work with skype or facebook. I can here static when playing back clips. Do I need to update firmware or reload old sys parts

I have recently upgraded my iMac Intel G5 iSight (iMac5,1) to OS 10.6.8 and now the internal mic does not work with skype or facebook. I can here static when playing back clips. Do I need to update firmware or reload old system parts. I have zapped PRAM. • Low volume when playing back voice memos.

When I play back a voice memo on my 5S, the volume is very low. Voice texts from other people are nice and loud, ringtones and music are audible from several feet away, people have no problem hearing me, nor I them, when I use my speaker phone, so I don't think this is a problem with the speaker nor with the microphone. Any suggestions other than 3rd party apps, speakers or headphones? I would like to think that the phone doesn't need any external help with one of its built-in apps.

I found the solution in another thread. There is a little speaker icon on the upper right of the voice memo screen that is white normally, but if you tap it, it turns blue (on my iPhone) and the volume is essentially at the same level as other sounds like music, ring tones, etc.

  • IPhone and iPad cannot play back some shared videos.

I have a 3rd gen. iPad, an iPhone 4S, and a 17 inch MacBook Pro, all with the latest OS and software.  I have library sharing turned on on the MacBook, and an extensive video library of TV shows purchased on iTunes.  Some of the episodes, usually from the same season, will not play back on the iPad, and cannot be listed on the iPhone. All of the files are located in sub folders under the same "iTunes Library" folder.  They all have the same .m4v file extension.  I cannot see a pattern that might help me figure this out, so I am asking for help.

  • I have some dts cd's that I want to import into itunes on a windows pc and then play back on my apple tv 3 (i think its 3, about 9 months old) to listen to through my onkyo amp via hdmi as dts, when I play back I just get white noise.

I have some dts cd's that I want to import into itunes on a windows pc and then play back on my apple tv 3 (i think its 3, about 9 months old) to listen to through my onkyo amp via hdmi as dts, when I play back I just get white noise. I have seen lots of old posts which go on about converting files but am wondering wherher at the current time with the latest versions of itunes and apple tv whether this should by now be a virtual play out of the box solution.
I have tried connecting my atv to the amp by optical cable but that didnt produce anything better and am assuming that a hdmi cable should be able to reproduce everything an optical cable does.
Is this something I should be able to achieve without having to recode the files?
Tracks are imported to itunes as apple lossless, have tried setting the atv audio settings to auto and 16 bit, neither works yet I was told some time ago by an apple rep that the atv shoud be able to handle any type of audio as it just passes it to the amp to decode. I am not stupid but not that technical when it comes to audio and bitrates etc so any explaination would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any help

Willy, the procdedure you describe works perfectly for AppleTV G1. In fact, I frequently play DTS music discs ripped to my iTunes library as Apple Lossless (ALAC) and synched to the ATV. What happens is that, as far as iTunes and the ATV are concerned, a conventional stereo 16/44 audio file is being played; however my reciever detects the DTS data stream, and instead of outputting static, it decodes the 5.1 channels correctly. This process parallels the way DTS discs were designed to be played back: a conventional CD player is connceted, via digital out, to a DTS-aware reciever/pre-amp and the two channels of static are recognized as 6 channels of DTS-encoded audio.
However this process will only work if the player (CD, ATV, PC, etc.) sends a "bit-perfect" 16 bit/44.1 khz data stream to the decoding device. In the case of ATV G2 and G3, as has been discussed elsewhere, the unit resmaples all audio - including 16/44 PCM (Redbook CD)  - to 16/48. While this is not a big deal for conventional audio CDs, MP3s, and AAC files, it mangles the fragile DTS datastream and renders it undecodable. The resulting static that you hear is just like the static you would hear if you played a DTS CD on a non-DTS capable system.
Sadly, I'm not aware of any easy way around this. You could use a program like Foobar (and the DTS plugin) to convert your DTS CDs to 6-ch .wav or .flac file. From there you could transcode the file to AC-3 and then mux it into a video container that ATV supports. You may need add a dummy video track, for iTunes/AppleTV to be ok with the file, though I'm not sure. This may be a lot of work.
Sorry for the bad news. I wish that the iTunes/ATV ecosystem had better multi-channel audio support.
    Steven

  • I have copied my iTunes library onto a new computer, but when I play back the songs there seems to be random "miss" or "drop out".  No probs with old computer, just the new one.  I'm onto my third new computer - same problem.  Any suggestions please?

I have copied my iTunes library onto a new computer, but when I play back the songs using the new computer, there seems to be random "miss" or "drop out" during play back, similar to a small scratch on a vinyl record.  Although when I play the same song over again, the "miss" occurs in a different location during the song.  No probs with old computer, just the new one.  I'm onto my third new computer - same problem.  Any suggestions please?

You don't say which version of iTunes you are using, but the symptoms you describe have been encountered by some users with the 64-bit version of iTunes 12.1.
There is an alternative version for 64-bit editions of Windows here:
iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
that seems to address the most of the playback issues that some users have been reporting with the full 64-bit version of 12.1.0.77 - including problems with Bluetooth speakers where either sound is degraded or completely absent.  The alternative installer here is the same architecture as most previous "64-bit" versions of iTunes, i.e., a 32-bit application with a 64-bit installer.  The "for older video cards" label appears to be something of a misnomer as some people have reported that this corrects problems found on current / high-spec systems.
Some users have reported that after installing this alternative version it is necessary to adjust the "Play audio using" selection (normally to "Direct Sound" rather than "Windows Audio Session", though this may vary based on your audio hardware/drivers) in Edit > Preferences > Playback to restore glitch-free audio (one part of the reported symptoms is that the "Direct Sound" choice isn't available, usually in Windows 8).  It may also be necessary to ensure that your Bluetooth speakers are active and selected as the default audio device before you run iTunes.
If this doesn't address the issue, you may want to think about reverting to iTunes 12.0 - see Turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps needed to completely remove all installed iTunes components, and for links to the 12.0 installers.

    - check your input and output properties
    - Change input and output 44100khz and 16-BIT for both.(these are the most common properties)

  • I keep getting an error 2048 everytime I try to play back my Maya file that I saved as a qt movie. I just recently updated qt and this is when the errors would pop up. Before the update I had no problems. How can I fix this?

I updated quicktime a few days ago and now I keep getting error 2048 whenever i try to play back my Maya file after saving it as a qt movie. I had no issues with this before I did the update, after the update I keep getting the error 2048 message. QT will play my earlier Maya movies and other video, it just won't play back my latest work. Help me please, I need this for school.

The 2048 error message usually suggests the files use MPEG-2 format which is not supported natively on Windows via QuickTime without the additional MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20 from Apple).
