Choppy Playback after 7.2 Upgrade

I also upgraded my Final Cut Studio to 2.0
Now when I open up DVCPROHD files in Quicktime, the playback is terribly choppy (and vertical resolution is jaggy) at all window sizes. If I open it up in Final Cut, it plays back fine as usual and the resolution is great.
I had no issues before this upgrade. What's the deal?

I've experienced something similar.
I was watching an HD music video in 720p and it looked fine; played smoothly and had a crisp picture.
But after installing Quicktime 7.2, the same video now plays choppy when put in fullscreen, and the video looks a little jagged. However, if I watch the same video in Front Row, it plays perfectly and looks great.

  • Choppy playback after upgrading hardware

I've recently upgraded from a phenom 965 and 7gb 1333 gb ram, to an i5-2500k with 16gb 1600mhz. Otherwise everything is the same, i just reinstalled windows and premiere pro after the upgrade. After the upgrade this error, or annoyance, occured. Here's all the specifics:
    -Premiere pro CS5.5.2 v/latest updates
-Windows 7 pro (fresh install v/important updates)
    -h.264 in mp4-container
    -no error messages
-very choppy playback after "jogging". When theres a lot of movement, the picture becomes very "stuttery" and "pixelated" in that area.
-no extra codecs or similar is installed.
    - hardware:
       -nvidia gtx 560 v/latest drivers
      -i5 2500k @ 4,6Ghz
      -16Gb 1600mhz xmp ram
      -7200rpm 500gb source hdd
      -5200rpm 120gb scratch disk
-Agility 120gb ssd OS and programs
I have tried using 1/4 playback, using ssd as scratch disk, installing and uninstalling extra codecs but none of it made any difference. The cpu or ram never exceeds 50% capacity when the problems occur.

But wouldnt the cpu reach 100% capacity before it starts being the bottleneck?
Only if all the other components supply data fast enough that the CPU can run flat out. If the CPU has to wait for other components to catch up, CPU load will be less than 100%.
If you race alone on a track and there are no other contestants (components) in the race, you can go flat out at 100% of the speed, but if the track is filled with many other contestants (components) from a local old-age house, your speed will drop significantly.

  • Premiere choppy playback after update

    Greetings,
I'm having a rather bizarre issue which has just came about recently.
I've been running PPro CC successfully for six months without issue. After the most recent update to 7.2.2 I'm having choppy playback both in the source and program monitors. I'm editing mostly AVCHD from a Panasonic HMC80 camera. The choppy playback occurs regardless of resolution or frame rate. I even tried a standard DV file and that too is playing back not smooth. Changing the playback resolution to 1/2, 1/4 etc.. makes no difference.  Changing from Mercury software to hardware makes no difference. I tried creating a new project as well as clearing cache files, previews, etc.. and still have the problem. As a last effort, I re-installed my OS, and re-installed Creative Cloud and Premiere. The issue is still present. My hardware cannot be the issue as I've been editing successfully before. Nothing has changed except for the Premiere update. I've read elsewhere that others are experiencing the same issue. Any thoughts?

Im having the same problem. Didnt show up until after the 7.2 update.
Major lag on one specific spot in the timeline, and muting all tracks makes no difference on the lag.
I cleaned my project file, caches, downgraded playback resolution, tried the mercury playback function. Nothing. Now the choppiness seems to bleed into the rest of the project until it is all so slow and unplayable. I'm having a harder time finishing this project as time goes on.

  • Choppy playback after burning data dvd in toast

Hi Ive just finished burning a copy of various short clips which I exported as a quicktime files from FCP onto my desktop then saved them as quicktime mov. through QT player which was successful enough.I then burned a copy of this QT movie in toast as a data dvd compatible for Mac & PC viewing. When I played the dvd in QT 7.4.5 the playback was choppy but the sound was fine. I then played the same disc on my G5 desktop running panther and QT 7.4.1 and it was absolutely fine.Is this process rather a roundabout way of doing things ? and what could be causing this choppy playback on my laptop?

Data DVD's and regular movie DVD are not read in the same way. A regular movie that is being read by your DVD player app is being stream too...and the player is set up to read from a DVD that way.
On the other hand a data DVD the data is just setting there...The DVD player can't send the video to Quicktime fast enough to play smoothly. That's why you need to copy the data DVD to the hard drive.
It would be if you had a 1gig image on a DVD and tried to edit it with Photoshop from the DVD. Photoshop would constantly bog down trying to read from the DVD while editing the image. Same if you had video files on a DVD tried and to it them from a editing app. The editing app not getting the data fast enough making editing very slow. Sometimes the program that's trying to read the from the DVD will freeze or crash. Best to copy the data from the DVD to the hard drive.

  • Choppy playback after upgrading to iTunes 11

I am still on OSX 10.6.8 so I can still use Front Row on my laptop. I just recently upgraded to iTunes 11 and now playback of video will become choppy and sometimes stalls and the sound will also become choppy and unsynchronized with the video. This occurs when playing video on iTunes or Front Row. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, have you come up with a solution?? Thanks in advance.

I was also having this issue on my iMac running OSX 10.6.8 after upgrading to iTunes 11.  Clearing my user Library Cache seems to have solved the issue.
In case you're not sure how to do that, open a finder window, hit Cmd-Shift-G to go to a folder, then enter "~/Library/Caches". Select all the contents of the Caches folder, and hit Cmd-Delete. You will be prompted to enter your password in order to delete these files.  Restart your machine and empty the bin when you log back in.

  • No video playback after 3.0 upgrade

Since upgrading, the iPod app doesn't list my videos. When I look at what is on the phone in iTunes, the videos are there. iPod and spotlight don't see them. Settings>About shows no video but the amount of space used shows me that they are there. I've restored to a backup and rebooted the phone with no improvement. Any ideas? I can't find anyone with the same problem. I know some people lost music but mine is fine. It's just video.
    Thanks

are you sure you are syncing your videos? that's the first place to check. after you connect your iPhone, go to the 'video' tab and scroll down. you'll see a list of the video files that are in your 'movies' section of iTunes and your 'tv shows'.

  • Avchd imports into fcp 10.0.7 but choppy playback-even after using clipwrap

I am not sure where the problem may be.  I record onto the sd card (16gb sandisk extreme class 10, 45mb/s) from brand new canon m500.  Card is read in FCP X and can import but when I play back everything is choppy.
I am recording as avchd, mxp-used 60i frame rate & 30 frame both had same issue.
I tried clipwrap and that improved the first 5 seconds and then still choppy for the remainder.
When I playback the sd card inside the camera no problem-looks and sounds great.
If I look at the file on the sd card - after putting sd card in macbook pro (mid 2009-handles FCP just fine) or copying to computer it is titled as "private."  I changed the permissions.
I am also using a canon hv 20 (mini dv)-absolutely no problems with import.
Any thoughts or ideas?  I am on a deadline and losing a lot of time.

Thanks Alchroma & digibudIl--Iappreciate the quick reply.
I was able to figure out a solution very similar to the suggestion of changing the playback & optimizing media.  Here is what I set up.  With these setings, the playback of the file before import is still choppy.  After import it is still choppy until the background tasks reach 100%-next to the timecode.  Once 100% then it playsback smoothly with these settings.
I was using the internal hard drive on my macbook pro.  My workflow is to (sometimes) use the internal hard drive and then transfer to external hard drive.  Other times import to external hd.
What was interesting to me about the import process is with AVCHD, is that FCP X recognizes the file from the sd card as an avchd file.  I did not need to save the files to another folder, create an archive etc.  I tried all these with the same result as the simple import in FCP X.
One last question.  The Canon M500 can shoot at a frame speed of 60i and 30.  Is 30 lesser quality or is 60 better in some way.  I will be editing the footage in FCP X.
Thanks again for the help and I hope my experience helps others.

  • Choppy timeline playback after motion effects

I'm working in FCP 7.0.1, on a MacPro Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.26 GHz processor, working with footage pulled off the trusty JVC GY-HM100U HD camera.
I've created an editing project that adopted the default footage codec settings (XDCAM EX 1080p24 (35 Mb/s VBR) ), and my issue is that whenever the sequence playhead passes over a "motion tab" effect in the timeline (i.e. traveling frames, cropped/zoomed footage), the playback thereafter hitches and stutters. Regardless of whether I set the RT to safe or unlimited, or the image quality to dynamic or low/med/high, I seem to get the same effect. Worse yet, if I click onto an entirely different sequence from another project, the stuttering playback occurs there as well. It seems that I need to quit and restart FCP if I want seamless playback after the playhead gets "infected" by a simple motion tab effect.
Just to note, there is nothing in the timeline that even needs rendering, and I've ruled out irregular window abutment and sizes that I've read elsewhere can interfere with playback.
I have more than enough processor firepower on my rig to push this footage around -- any ideas on what gives?

    Bumping this topic up higher.

  • More choppy playback issues

None of the previous discussions have provided a solution, even though I followed all of their advice.
    I have a new project, started on CC2014 V8.2.0
    OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    Macbook Pro I7 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
Working on 1920X1080 sequence, *no* effects, absolutely none
footage and project file  on external thunderbolt 2Gb Western Digital HD
After playing the sequence for a few seconds, it starts to 'hang' and 'stutter' and will not play smoothly.
    I have:
clicked "Maximum Render Quality" in sequence settings
unchecked "Composite in Linear Color" (although it keeps checking itself back on)
cleared all the caches, both within Premier, and using "WhatSize" app
    restarted, rebooted, re-everythinged
Still will not play smoothly.  Any suggestions? Besides going back to FCX that is....

    1. two weeks ago I completed a project with footage from the same camera, on the same computer, with the same drivers, and had no problem, so I have trouble believing it's the Nvidia driver.
    2. I did turn off, then on, then off, then on, etc. the GPU acceleration, no effect
    3. Again, the same project I completed two weeks ago was from the same external HD (You're right, 2Tb, sorry) and again no problem.
    4. I upgraded to Yosemite just a couple of weeks after it came out, long enough ago that I can't remember exactly when, but again have completed many projects since without this problem.
    5. I can play the mp4 files on any other program smoothly, VLC, Quicktime, RealPlayer, etc. so it's not the footage.
I went through the forums and tried every suggestion I  found, and it seems like there were indeed a lot of issues with choppy playback, and a lot of suggestions on how to fix it. None of the steps put forward have helped, and according to at least one of the forums I've read, that person was unable to find a workable solution. Starting from scratch seems pointless, since I just started this project fresh a few days ago.
I really feel like in the latest update from Adobe something else got screwed up and I have no choice but to live with it until they decide to acknowledge it and fix it.

  • ITunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) did not fix choppy playback

After reading all the other posts I tried installing the (64 bit for older video cards) and it did not solve my choppy playback with Music or Movies.  I am running windows 8.1, Intel i7-4500U CPU @ 1.8GHz, 8 GB RAM, 64-bit OS, x64 based processor, DELL Inspirion 15.  Never had problems until upgrading to 8.1 from 8.0.

Did you see if changing the Play Audio Using select in Edit > Preferences > Playback to "Direct Sound" resolves the issue?  Otherwise you may want to consider rolling back to 12.0 and waiting until a future release is shown to resolve the playback issues in 12.1.  See Turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps needed to completely remove all installed iTunes components, and for links to the 12.0 installers.

  • 7.01 choppy playback

had intermittent (though not bad) choppy playback in 7.0, but after upgrading to 7.01 the choppiness is constant and makes listening nearly impossible - is there a way to fix this, or do I just give up and either return to 6, or wait for 7.02 and hope?

There is now a de-installer for 7.0.2 on http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime701reinstallerforquicktime702.ht ml
I think you need to go back to 6.5.2 with OS X 10.3.9

  • ITunes 7.1 choppy playback issue on Leopard

I upgraded to Leopard today and updated my iTunes to 7.1. Unfortunately after doing so, I could not get any song to playback continuously. Some songs would only start after a few seconds or play for a second. Any guesses?
    Thanks,
    Sayaka

I've had choppy playback so much I could puke.
One reason seems to be if memory is filling up. See Activity Monitor and if the green part of memory is going away, that's one reason. Seems the only solution is to reboot as quitting all programs doesn't bring back any green and doesn't solve skipping problems.
Another reason is some other activity. If you're scrolling fast or crunching pixels in Photoshop, that could cause skips in the moment. It shouldn't, but it happens to me, and has been happening for a year or two.
But I think this latest release has some problem. Suddenly there's lots of threads talking about it. ANd I have it skipping with 3gigs of free ram free, and only Safari showing a simple page running on it.
The first song after I reboot, plays ok, but then it stutters, like fifty or a hundred periods of silence per song, scattered around randomly, each 0.1 to 1 second long. All songs finish, if you call that finishing, and they seem to take the correct amount of time to finish.
Maddening. iTunes is my stereo now!! will I have to go back to the old CD player?

  • Choppy playback/rendering for one camera in a multicam sequence

Any help is appreciated with this weird, specific problem...
I have a sequence (let's call it "MAIN") which contains many separate multicam sequences (let's call them "M1" through "M5").  Each of these multicam sequences is made up of footage from two cameras, a Canon 5D Mark III and a Canon C100.  All footage in M1-5 was shot sequentially, and neither camera changed settings, although the cameras recorded with different settings from each other.  The 5DIII recorded at 1080p 23.976fps.  The C100 at 1080i 60Hz.  This footage makes up all the assets in my project panel and they have no special media interpretation.
Here's the problem.  Everything looks/plays fine until I get to M3 in my MAIN sequence.  When I switch to camera 2 (the 5DIII), the playback in the program monitor looks about half the framerate of the original footage and all of my other sequences.  Camera 1 plays smoothly.  Camera 2 in any of the other multicam sequences plays smoothly (while in MAIN).  When I open up M3 in the timeline, it plays smoothly.  When I open up the original video in the source window, it plays smoothly.  Everything plays smoothly but camera 2 in M3 (in MAIN) in the program monitor.
I rendered a clip of MAIN that has M3 cam 1, to cam 2, back to cam 1.  Camera 1 is smooth, while camera 2 plays back at about half frame rate and looks interlaced.  So this is a real problem and not just some display issue.
The interlaced look of the render made me think there's some sequence settings that were off, whether they were in MAIN or M1-M5.  However, the sequence settings of M1-M5 are all identical, and the sequence settings of MAIN are not affecting any of the other multicam sequences.
I tried restarting my computer and deleting my cache.  No dice.
    Premiere Pro CC
    Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
    HP Z820 w/ 2 x Xeon E5-2630
    128GB RAM
    GTX-570
Addendum: After playing around with sequence settings a bit, but after resetting them to be all as they were, now M2 is giving choppy playback on camera 1, while camera 2 plays smoothly.  What in the world is going on here?

The LEDs were reflecting on the book that the GoPro was on but I got it to work with a garbage matte using a frame grab with the lights off and including the book. It worked a treat! But I am going to remember the dark grey matte thing; less is more and all that. Thank you for your input, much appreciated. Ooh and as for multicam syncing I just nested the composite shot and used that as a single camera source.

  • Why am I getting such choppy playback?

Long time reader, first time poster, I'll make this short and sweet. Here are my specs:
    Imac 27"
    3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB
    1TB internal Fusion drive SSD
I am working in a fairly big (1TB footage) 4k mixed with 2k project. It's a 3 simultaneous camera shoot, so I need to multi-cam. I have two external WD Caviar Black 7200rpm drives. I also have a Lacie 1TB Thunderbolt drive available.
Because the final output will be 1080, but possibly 2k in the future, I decided to import all the RED footage natively (as opposed to transcoding to prores 1080). All my sequences are 1920x1080, with multi-cam nesting in 1080 as well. Ram is allocated to 20GB Premiere, 4GB other.
No matter what I've tried, I always get choppy playback in the project...especially with multi-cam activated, even at setting my resolution to 1/4. What I've tried:
All Media on WD 01 drive...Project, Cache, Preview, Scatch on WD 02 drive...Internal SSD for OS and Apps: Terrible performance
All media split between WD 01 and WD 02...Cache, OS and Apps on Internal SSD...project, preview, scratch on WD 01. I also tried the same thing but with the project, preview, and scratch on my Lacie 1TB Thunderbolt and internal SSD: Slightly better than all media on 01 drive.
At this point I feel like I've tried every variation of where the MEDIA, Cache, project, and Scratch/preview files go but nothing seems to give me smooth playback consistently. I'll have brief periods where it's very smooth, but then choppy soon after. I'd understand if I were trying to edit in 2k or 4k, but all my timelines and nests are 1080. Even if I pre-render the sequence, it barely helps. Is it possible I need more RAM, a better GFX card, better external drives? Help?!
EDIT: Premiere 2014 updated to latest version. No big apps running aside from Premiere. All my drives have at least or close to 50% space available.

Recommend you take a look for disc layout & such over at the Tweaker's Page ...
    Tweaker's Page ...
    http://ppbm7.com/index.php/tweakers-page
Basically they recommend just the program file on the system/OS disc ... and then putting things on other drives as per the needs of the "asset" ... some need very fast connects, a couple only mostly fast connections.
Footage is mostly a one-way read-only operation, and export out is mostly a read operation, so those can at need be on somewhat slower connections as long as they aren't on the SAME drive over a slower connection. Such as say one of the PNY 128Gb high-speed USB3 flash-drives into a USG3.0 external port on your computer. I've adapted this from one of the other users, and it works fairly well for my 1080p footage. I export to one of several drives I've got in external boxes connected via USB. It's adequate, though not blazing.
Everything else ... project files, database, previews, cache ... there's a TON of read/write work going on constantly during playback with these. So 7200 or faster "standard" drives or SSD drives, connected internally via SATA-II or better, or external via eSATA-II and Thunderbolt connections are needed. None of the Firewire nor USB2/3 connections available have near adequate sustained read/write speeds to work in the massive testing they've done at the above mentioned site. The "burst" speeds claimed by manufacturers are achieved on the absolute most ideal set-up with the um ... right size? ... of data packets to get the best numbers. They aren't usable numbers for heavy and constant read/write demands like the Adobe DVA's through at the machine.
Remember ... during playback ... PrPro "reads" the source footage including when to jump in & out of every clip, throws in all your instructions for editing, color changes, transistions, effects, EVERYTHING ... and on-the-fly builds the image you see in the playback monitor. It doesn't make something for it to just 'read' from disc, it does this on the fly. Even when you make previews for a section of a timeline, any change you make ... those previews are outdated.
Which is why we all need machines that both have pretty solid hardware off the mobo, AND plenty of high-speed disc connections. Best case is say a 4/5 disc array of 2Tb discs in RAID 0 or 5 for the project files, d-base, cache, & previews ... and that can maybe even have media (original footage) on it.

  • ITunes skips ahead skip ahead when continuing playback after pausing

Just recently (after an iTunes upgrade? -- I'm running iTunes 11.1.3 with OS X 10.9), I noticed that when I pause a playback in iTunes and then hit play to resume, the playback "skips a beat" - it doesn't pick up where it left off, but rather a fraction of a second (or more) later in the audio track. This may not matter too much for music, but for audio books or instructional materials, useful information is skipped over and it's a nuisance to back up to find it and play it.
Any ideas what may be causing this or, better yet, how to fix it?
    Thanks.

I listen to podcasts and audiobooks as well but I am not seeing the same issue you are reporting. Are you able to see that issue immediately if you unplug and plug back in and start playback?
