Choppy playback issues with Premiere CC, advice needed

Hi folks. I've been using Premiere CC for a while now and for some reason just cannot get footage to playback without setting everything to 1/4 resolution. I've built a decent computer setup thinking that I would finally address this issue but instead I find that footage will not play smooth on my timeline no matter what I try.
Here are some specs that I have for my setup:
intel 3930K i7 overclocked to 4.5ghz
64 gb ram
Asus Rampage IV extreme motherboard
GTX 680 video card
2 x Samsung Pro SSD 256g drives setup as raid0 for OS and programs
12 x Seagate 3tb barracuda drives in Raid1+0 with an Areca ARC-1882IX-12 Raid card
I've tried numerous file formats and mainly need my system to edit RED footage up to 5k. However, I'm getting poor performance even with 1080 jpeg2000 files when editing.
I've tried different playback settings hoping that something will click and Premiere will run smooth but its always choppy. I've also tried reinstalling everything a couple times now, different raid array setups etc but no luck at all.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I have no idea if this would make any difference, but I would have gone for the following setup.
C: SSD x 2 (RAID 1) - System
D: 3TB x 2 (RAID 1) - Projects (Including all audio and still images)
E: 3TB x 1  - Cache/Scratch
F: 3TB x 7 (RAID 3) - RED Media  (This gives you 18TB of very fast and secure media storage.)
G: 3TB x 2 (RAID 1) - Exports

  • Having Issues with after effects, advice needed

Hi I am having some unusual issues and a general question about after effects. The first question is how to remove all the thumb marks that i keep making ever time move the time line indicator down the time line, it auto creates thumb marks that I don't want.
The second issue and this is a odd one is that i have two files 1) about 3 gb and 2) about 5 gb and the 5 gb I cut in half for the final rendering but i come out with a 168gb avi file???
How did I use about 6gb of footage and render it out to 168gb I'm confused.
I am using the general settings, I used avi because my trail version is not showing any other animation type like QuickTime movie (which is what I really would prefer) I don't understand where is all the extra data is coming from.
This file is so big it pauses for a fraction of a second every 2 seconds of footage when played via a player like window media player.
    I would love any help.
    Thanks

First, I very strongly recommend that you start at the beginning and take the time to work through these basic materials to learn After Effects:
    http://adobe.ly/bjBT3P
Your questions show a lack of basic terminology, so it's going to be very hard for us to help you until you learn at least enough so that we're using the same language.
Regarding QuickTime: You need to install QuickTime. You can get it from the Apple website.
Regarding large output files, heed Rick's advice and use the FAQ list for this forum, specifically this item:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/684381
Finally, it sounds like you've turned on auto-keyframing. If so, turn it off.

  • Graphics Card issues with Premiere Pro CS4

    Hey there,
I've placed the screenshot of my problem at the bottom of this post.
I'm having lots of issues with premiere pro CS4 and editing videos since I upgraded to Windows 7. I have some .mpg and .MP4 videos. Both of which play fine in WMP, VLC, WinAmp, VirtualDJ etc. But when I load them into PPRO CS4, as you can see in the screenshot they go green and pink. And they don't move. I.e you see one still image and hear only audio.
Now a fix I have found for this is to uninstall my graphics card. But this is no way an option to edit videos, as the resoultion goes from 1920 x 1080 to 1024 x 768.
I should add that I am runnig the following system:
    Dell Vostro 1000 Latpop
    Windows 7 Ultimate 32Bit
    2.00Ghz AMD Sempron Processor
    2GB RAM
ATI Radeon XPress 1150 Graphics card
I have the latest graphics card drivers installed. I am just wondering what the problem is, and a potential fix. Would be great to hear any advice,
    Regards,
    Adam.

OK, here are some other things to think about:
ATI/AMD Catalyst seems to have an issue with one of the latest versions, maybe rollback to an earlier version.
Depending on your OS, check Hardware Acceleration (though this usually affect smoothness of playback) in Control Panel>System>Hardware>Advanced.
    Check your OpenGL settings.
In Catalyst, turn OFF any GPU Acceleration
That's about all that I can think of for now, and those are shots in the dark.
    Good luck,

  • Slow down issue with Premiere CS4 on a Mac pro

I am having a similar slow down issue with Premiere CS4 on a Mac pro, but I don't have bloated prproj file size.
Here is what I am working with:
Mac Pro intel quad core 2.8ghz
    OSX 10.6.7 Snow Leopard
    6Gigs RAM
3TB storage between 4 drives, each drive with about 50% free space
I am editing a 10 minute HD video from avchd files.  The edited video is very heavy in photoshop files with a variety of different fx including green screen.  The system has slowed down to almost a standstill.  Anytime I move the playcurser, or try to do any action, it displays the spinning top "thinking" icon and takes 15 seconds to several minutes to unfreeze.  I am often forced to force quit and I have gotten unexpected quits several times.   The program also freezes on startup frequently.
No other programs are running.  When I export with media encoder, it took about 4 hours to complete.  The last 4 or so photoshop images I added seemed to tip the program over the edge.  It had been slowing down some, but those last few really dropped the processing speed.  Before those additions, export took 30 min to 1hr.
I did delete the render files (did not check if the file size was bloated beforehand, oops) but it has not significantly affected my performance.

Do you need all of those extra pixels in the stills? Are you panning the full 4976?
Two things to consider are that if you using, say a 1920 x 1080 Sequence Frame Size, you can only see that at any time, regardless of how large the images are in pixels. If there are extra pixels, i.e. the Pan is not using all 4976 pxls., I would Scale to just what you need in PS, prior to Import.
If you are doing any Scale in PrPro, its Scaling algorithms are not as efficient, as those in PS. [Note: CS5 and 5.5 are a major improvement on that statement.]
With many large stills (the max for CS4 is 4096 x 4096, if there ARE extra pixels, pushing those around will use up resources, and quickly. As a test, some years back, I was working on a "photo wall," and was using 4000 x 4000 images. The workstation had no issues with slowness, until I got to the 5th large still. By the 8th, the Project was too slow to edit. I had to wait for everything. Luckily, I have AE, and it handles large stills much more efficiently, and much differently, than PrPro. I just moved to an AE Comp, and completed the Project, finishing up n PrPro, after I Exported from AE.
Just something to think about. With Scaling in PrPro, this is one time, where bigger is not necessarily better.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Major Issues with Premiere Pro CC

I am currently having some major issues with Premiere Pro CC running on my macbook pro(specs below).
I am trying to export a 4 minute video using the vimeo 1080p export settings as I usually do, and it takes about 10 hours to export the video. On cs6, a similar project would take 5-10 minutes.
Also, the video that was exported contained a lot of clips that came out choppy and low quality.
I am currently on the phone with tech support, and they cannot seem to figure out what is wrong.
I have seen a few post about CC having issues with amd cards, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated since this job is past due due to these issues.
    2011 MacBook Pro
    i7 2.2
    16GB Ram
    256 SSD + 750GB HD
    AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1GB

You neglected to specify exactly which release of PPro CC you are running. There have been 5 of them.
If you're on CC7.2 or 7.2.1, then you may be hitting the same problem discussed in one of these threads:
    RGB Curves: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5929088?tstart=0#5929088
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5934916?tstart=30#5934916
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5935386?tstart=0#5935386
The first thing to try is switching Renderer to Software Only.

  • Any known issues with Premiere CC and imported HDV clips?

I'm having consistent difficulty with Premiere CC playback of HDV video that originated in FCP 7. This was not an issue in Premiere CS6. The problem is dropout and pixelization which is consistent, pass after pass, and occurs at the same TC location on some clips. It is almost like some clips are corrupted in a consistent manner, while others are not, and don't seem to become corrupted.
For a variety of reasons, I still shoot HDV on a Z1U, and use an old FCP7 workstation to digitize media. I then import these individual video clip files into CS6. These are clips that play correctly in FCP, Premier CS6, and in the Finder, and Quicktime Pro, but not Premiere CC.
I have Dropboxed a sample clip to my service contact at AJA, and she is reporting the same issue with Premiere CC. (The technical support at AJA is the best I've experienced in over 30 years of video production).
The same issue presents itself with HDV clips that were converted to such from .m2v via Clipwrap.
Any other types of media play correctly within Premiere CC. For example, I have a CS6 project that is nothing but After Effect CS6 anims comiled into a program in Premiere CS6; it plays perfectly. So do any media that Premiere CC puts through its own conversion or import "routine," like AVCHD. Even XDCAM clips that went into FCP via XDCAM Transfer play well.
    Any thoughts?

    Tim,
I would assume the clips work fine in FCP7, so you're not totally busted. Maybe try using Compressor or AME, like the other guy said, to export them in another format; I'd recommend Apple ProRes 422. Fallback is to work in FCP7, as the tapes are gone.
When I 1st posted this problem, I left for vacation. I saw briefly that someone suggested a plugin in another reply, but I haven't had a chance to pursue that yet. I'm in northern Michigan (USA) with limited access to email. I'll do some follow up this Monday when I return. Good luck!!

  • [bug?] playback issues with QT browser plugin, any workarounds?

I've noticed a playback issue with media files using the quicktime plugin (currently v7.1.3) with Firefox 1.5.0.x and now Firefox 2.0 on Windows XP (SP2):
    Description:
When I open a media file in a separate tab or window, audio playback cuts out when I switch focus away from the tab or window (i.e. when it runs in the background). When I put the tab/window in the foreground again, playing resumes.
    Reproducible: Always
    Steps to Reproduce:
    1. Open an mp3 file with quicktime plugin in a new tab
    2. Switch focus to some other tab or firefox window
    Expected Results:
Audio playback should continue in the background.
    Actual Results:
Audio playback cuts out and resumes once you click on the tab containing the plugin or if you hover over it with the cursor. The cutting and resuming out doesn't happen right away but after a short delay, suggesting that it might have something to do with thread prioritization.
The file is completely buffered by quicktime, this is not about connection speed or bandwidth issues.
Opening the link to the same file with right-click->Open Link in External Application works well.
Someone else has filed a bug report against Firefox about this issue here:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=339449
I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out not to be an issue with Gecko but with QuickTime.
Can other users confirm this on XP? Is this a known QuickTime bug? Are there fixes or workarounds?
    Windows XP

Yeah I had that thought as well but no joy. It works for the player but it doesn't solve my plugin problem. It really seems to be something about prioritizing, the way the audio cuts in and out - notice how it takes a few fractions of a second before a process loses its CPU cycles when you click away from it? You can observe this with System Monitor on the Mac or Linux or process explorer on XP. That's how the audio is cutting out and back in. I still think it's probably a bug/'feature' either with Gecko, the Firefox browser engine, or with the QT plugin..

  • Bluetooth headphones playback issues with iOS 6

Has anyone been experiencing some playback issues with the latest iOS 6 and Bluetooth headphones?
A few weeks ago, I bought a pair of Sony's MDR-1RBT Bluetooth headphones and ever since I updated my iOS devices (4S & iPad 2), playback of tracks has been lagging for the first few seconds. Whenever I choose a song on my iPhone or iPad's player, I just can't hear its first 3~10 seconds. I've contacted Sony about this issue and they bluntly replied that it's Apple's issue, but when I contacted Apple, they referred me to their Bluetooth connectivity site. In other words, my problem still hasn't been solved.
Could anyone help me solve this frustrating issue?
    Thanks.

  • Zen - AAC: Playback issue with long songs (± 15 min.)

    Hi,
I made some tests with AAC Itunes plus files, and I've experiencing playback issue with long songs (when it's about 5 minutes or longer, like the second movement of Beethoven's third).
During?playback, there is random artifacts added, never at the same place.
I cleaned up my Zen 6 Gb and even formated it, and the problem still occurs. The latest firmware is installed.
Is this issue has already been reported?
    Thanks.

The Zen does in fact support AAC playback, but it's tricky--I've been dealing with this issue for a while, and I think it's finally solved. First of all, when you say "skipping," do you mean that the track skips ahead further into the same track, or does it skip to the next song with an error message like "There was an error with the audio file"? My problem was with the latter. There are a few possible solutions:
. Delete the erroneous track from your Zen, then re-transfer; in my experience, this corrects the problem, although sometimes it takes a couple of tries.
    2. Make sure your AAC file is in iTunes Plus format (you can choose it in the ripping options in iTunes).
    3. If you haven't already done so, upgrade to Windows 7. This means upgrading to WMP2, which recognizes AAC files and can transfer them to your Zen. It also means you can download a version of Creative Centrale (from the Creative Support site) specifically for the Zen, which replaces the Zen Media Explorer and Creative Mediasource, and which seems to handle AAC transfers much better (so far, I haven't noticed any of the playback errors, but you never know!). By the way, WMP2 and Creative Centrale will also transfer album art easily to the Zen.
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Video Playback ISSUE WITH VISTA!!!!  NEEDED HELP BADLY!!!!!!!

I am using a Dell XPS GEN 5 PC with Windows Vista Premium Edition as the current OS installed. I have latested up date for Itunes and QuickTime (7.1.6) Installed. I have recently bought and downloaded 3 of the Original Star Trek Tv Shows from Itunes. When I try and play one of them, they don't work. The Screen comes up, the show starts, then stops. Sometimes the sound keeps on playing, and then stops. Sometimes it just dosent even come on. I'm guessing (as a highly advanced Windows PC User) That this ia a "video/playback issue, related to a Apple/Vista Compatibility problem. I would like help solving this problem.
    -Nick.

Do you have a SATA hard drive? I have the same problem you describe when trying to play videos in iTunes. Do the previews of music videos on the iTunes web site play OK? If they do you probably have the same problem with SATA HD and iTunes incompatibility. Not sure who is going to fix that problem and when. I have found one fix that worked for me. Copy your video(s) to a flash drive and then play them from there. It's a workaround and you shouldn't have to do it but it does allow you to watch the videos.

  • More choppy playback issues

None of the previous discussions have provided a solution, even though I followed all of their advice.
    I have a new project, started on CC2014 V8.2.0
    OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    Macbook Pro I7 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
Working on 1920X1080 sequence, *no* effects, absolutely none
footage and project file  on external thunderbolt 2Gb Western Digital HD
After playing the sequence for a few seconds, it starts to 'hang' and 'stutter' and will not play smoothly.
    I have:
clicked "Maximum Render Quality" in sequence settings
unchecked "Composite in Linear Color" (although it keeps checking itself back on)
cleared all the caches, both within Premier, and using "WhatSize" app
    restarted, rebooted, re-everythinged
Still will not play smoothly.  Any suggestions? Besides going back to FCX that is....

    1. two weeks ago I completed a project with footage from the same camera, on the same computer, with the same drivers, and had no problem, so I have trouble believing it's the Nvidia driver.
    2. I did turn off, then on, then off, then on, etc. the GPU acceleration, no effect
    3. Again, the same project I completed two weeks ago was from the same external HD (You're right, 2Tb, sorry) and again no problem.
    4. I upgraded to Yosemite just a couple of weeks after it came out, long enough ago that I can't remember exactly when, but again have completed many projects since without this problem.
    5. I can play the mp4 files on any other program smoothly, VLC, Quicktime, RealPlayer, etc. so it's not the footage.
I went through the forums and tried every suggestion I  found, and it seems like there were indeed a lot of issues with choppy playback, and a lot of suggestions on how to fix it. None of the steps put forward have helped, and according to at least one of the forums I've read, that person was unable to find a workable solution. Starting from scratch seems pointless, since I just started this project fresh a few days ago.
I really feel like in the latest update from Adobe something else got screwed up and I have no choice but to live with it until they decide to acknowledge it and fix it.

  • Playback Issues with multiple framerates and Blackmagic Decklink 4K Extreme

I recently swapped by AJA Kona Card for a Blackmagic Decklink 4K Extreme in order to get external monitoring in DaVinci Resolve.
I'm working in a 1080p 23.976 project that includes some 29.97 SD and HD footage. When loading this 29.97fps footage into my source footage, I periodically encounter frozen playback (The play triangle in my toolbar becomes a square symbol and remains that way). From there I am unable to playback any footage in any timeline, and requires a full system shutdown to return to normal! The problem is seemingly intermitent, with successful playback happening sometimes.
The 29.97 footage was DVCPRO, I attempted to transcode to Prores to troubleshoot. No dice. I believe it to be an issue related to the Decklink's inability to handle multiple framerates on-the-fly but wanted to submit here, too. I've also experienced intermittent sync delays on my broadcast monitor.
    Decklink Driver 10.0
    Premiere CC 7.2.1
Mac OSX 10.9.2 (same problem pre-mavericks)

    Hi Andy,
You should not have any issues with Blackmagic handling multiple formats on the fly. However, I believe the frozen playback issues your describing is related to the Desktop Video 10 driver. I suggest rolling back to 9.3.3 for the time being. Blackmagic is looking into this issue now.

  • Render and preview issues with Premiere CC 2014 update

Rendering issues: Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014.0.1 Update does not fix" Occasional instance where sequences could never finished rendering"
It's been 3 days 3 technicians and still same issue. Everything has been tried except starting over which is not an option. Worked
    fine in CS6.
    1. Optimization of windows and tweek premiere memory settings,
    2. GPU updates,
    3. Software only render,
4.render section at a time works (but who has time for that),
    5. Tweek virtual memory, - clean cache, clean temp files,
    6. hardware considerations, drives, etc...
    7. Other
Ceremony completed render except for export in older computer. Please fix issue or give money back until you do!
    The rendering of footage of:
    1. render worked (on complex Ceremony 19 min sequence with AVCHD format and HDV) in an old computer. - Core 2 DUO Quad 8 gb ram 2g
    b GPU
    2. Same sequence of Ceremony (19 min sequence with AVCHD format and HDV) did not work in the faster computer. - i7 QUAD core 16 ram
    1 or 2 GB GPU
    3. Reception sequence of HDV footage only did not on both computer.
Please call the exterminator and get rid of all the bugs. I am spending more time
troubleshooting than editing….and that is bad

You really aren't reading what we write.
    Let's break it down:
Suitcase isn't working with the new application versions, because Suitcase has bugs in it's code or just doesn't know about the new application versions.
The only way to fix that is to fix the code for Suitcase.
Suitcase is written by Extensis, so only Extensis can fix the code for Suitcase.
So you are waiting on Extensis to fix their code to work correctly with the new applications.
This is not about the CC 2014 applications, this is about Extensis code not working, and Extensis needing to provide an update to make their code work.
To get a working version of Suitcase (which requires fixing bugs in Suitcase), you need to talk to Extensis.

  • Latest nVidia 310.90 drivers issues with Premiere CS6

    Hey guys,
I'm currently running the GTX590 with 306.97 drivers and any later drivers have proven to not work with Premiere CS6.
I understand Premiere has issues with SLI and can only utilize a single GPU, but if I update  the drivers to anything later than 306.97, my preview window goes blank during playback. Audio is working and After Effects preview works just fine, but Premiere has issues with displaying video during playback.
The main reason I wanted to update  the nVidia drivers is for better gameplay, but seeing that i cannot edit in Premiere because of that, i have reverted back to 306.97.
Does anyone have suggestions with regards to getting the latest drivers to work with Premiere CS6?
    Thanks!

They work fine for me on Win 8.  But I don't have SLI.

  • QTFC Issues with Premiere Pro CS4?

    Hello there.
So recently, I have been having issues with my adobe programs. I have the Master Collection CS4 and when I launch programs like After Effects, it tells me the following.
"QuickTime functions will be disabled because a compatible version of QuickTime could not be found"
and here's my real issue. When I go to launch Premiere Pro CS4, I get the following error.
"Adobe Premiere Pro.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point QTCF_CFUniCharGetUnicodePropertyDataForPlane could not be located in the dynamic library link QTCF.dll"
I click OK and it pops up again, then premiere launches. How do I get rid of this error? I have tried reinstalling Master Collection and Quicktime but that didn't help.
I cannot afford to reformat computer as I'm very busy and need my programs to work.
Thankyou for your time and support.
    -Matthew.

To answer your question. I had the same problem that you had. I was using Quicktime 7. So I downgraded by downloading Quicktime 6.4
    Here's a link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120297
So I installed QT 6.4, and the error message is no longer there. But there is another issue, I try to import or find a file that is a .mov and it says File format not supported. Which is weird because you get that if you don't have quicktime installed. That may be an entirely different problem. But hope this at least helps you answer your question.
