Choppy Playback - Video Card? Settings?

I am experiencing Choppy playback, I am using HD video recorded on a Flip Mino and a iPhone 4.
After getting numerous "dropped frames" warnings, I have transcoded my media to proxy video and still get choppy playback and dropped frame warnings (I have elected to turn off the warnings).
I have a late 2009 MacBook Pro with a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB VRAM. 4GB of RAM.
I am selecting to use Proxy Video in my Preferences.
I use an external G Drive via FireWire.  I realized I am on the low end of video card requirements, but should playback be this bad?
I have to export to a MOV file to actually see playback without the frame drops.
Is this unusual, or am I limited by my video card?

That drive will work best for video editing compressed HD with the eSATA interface.  FW800 would also give you a few HD streams.  But, if you use the USB2 or FW400 interface, you're not going to be much better off than using your single drive.  That's called a "bottleneck."
Here's what you need to find out:
1. Estimate what the data-rate is for the footage you want to use.  There are "data-rate calculators" all over the internet.  Use Google.
2. Mulitply that data rate times the number of layers you want to play simultaneously in real-time.
3. Install a drive AND interface combiniation that exceeds the "Sustained Data Transfer Rate" for the number you came up with in #2.
Then, if you drop frames, it's not because of your drive (array); it's due to puny CPU or some other factor.
Some codecs strain the CPU more than others.  Long-GOP codecs require more decoding to play back than intraframe codecs.  Most DSLR footage is Long-GOP, and some flavors of it take 100% of all eight of the 3GHz cores in my MacPro to play back one stream.  2 or 3 is out of the question, no matter how fast my RAID is.
So, it may be that drive speed isn't your problem... you may have just maxed out your CPU's ability to decode that many streams of video in real-time.
But, if you do the math I just suggested, you can determine whether your drive is the issue.

  • Choppy Export Video - Export Settings, Sequence Settings, Capture Settings

    Hi all,
New to this forum and new to Final Cut Pro. Please forgive me if I ask bonehead questions... Please humor me and help me solve my problem.
    First off... Equipment
    CPU:
    12" Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz
    ~1.25 Gig RAM
    Camera:
    Canon GL2
    Problem:
When exporting video, it comes out choppy... as in three to seven frames per 45 seconds of video. The quality of the images is also poor, with horizontal lines where there is movement of the subject. The audio turns out just fine.
    What I am doing now:
    Capture:
MiniDV through FireWire - DV NTsc 48 khz
The footage looks good while editing... smooth
    Exporting:
I have tried quite a few different settings using the Quicktime Conversion.
Ultimately, I would like to export video for the following uses:
-Full-Size .mov Files burned to DVDs to play in Quicktime (also .avi)
-DVD quality for putting together DVDs that will play on a DVD player
    -Web upload
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help...
    -JBH

Not 'bonehead' but certainly basic stuff...
Full size to put on data DVD:
Two options (one of which is NOT avi): File - Export - QTMovie - Current Settings - Selfcontained. This is the highest resolution you can export of your cut film. However, it will be a HUGE file size and you will only be able to fit a limited number of minutes on a 4.x gig dvd disc. Second option is to File - Export - QTConversion... Choose the highest quality from the dropdown menu and hit export. This will end up smaller... but will indeed have a 'quality' loss due to compression. Do take them OFF the disc when playing on a computer as they will choke during playback from the disc itself.
Export for DVD Player to TV (and DVD Player on Computers):
File - Export - QT Movie - Current Settings - not selfcontained. Take THAT file to COMPRESSOR and use the export presets for your length of movie. I like the 90 minute high quality 2 pass version for anything 90 minutes or less - I stay away from the 60 minute one. Do make sure you export the ac3 audio too. This will give you two files that you need to take to DVDSP to put together and build a DVD with. (else you can take the exported file before compressor and drop it into iDVD if you want). The quality will STILL be compressed, but is what it is for 'dvd quality' on a mac.
    Web Upload:
File - Export - QT Conversion... pulldown to Broadband High. I like that setting as is, but if I'm working with anamorphic material I'll need to hit the OPTIONS button and change the size (480x270).
Looks like this and is 3-5 megs per minute: http://web.mac.com/captmench/Site/ThreeBoysMovies/Entries/2006/7/20_Entry1.html
    Good luck,

  • Video Card Settings In BIOS

i have a race game(F1 2012)and it gets blurry during gameplay. I have an AMD Radeon HD 6850 vid card. In CPU-Z it says Core is 803 mhz, Memory 1000MHz,Memory Size is 1024 GDDR5. My RAM and CPU are overclocked and are high performance ..stuff. The 970 Gaming motherboard, are there settings for vid card in BIOS I need to adjust to make vid card perform differently to help this issue?

There isn't anything in your UEFI (formerly known as "bios") that you can adjust to make a specific game run "less blurry."  That is going to be a pure software issue of some kind relating to your settings in the AMD Catalyst drivers and your settings in the game software itself.  Apparently you don't see this in other games, which simply reinforces the fact that your game settings need to change.  First thing to check on is the resolution the game is running when it opens--if it's opening a low-res screen (640x480, for instance) and you own a 1920x1080 LCD monitor, then you need to go into the game and adjust the resolution in the game's preferences so that the game will open and run @ 1920x1080 every time you run it.  However, note that some older games may lock you into a low resolution and other than enabling anisotropic filtering via the Catalysts there's not a lot you can do with some older games.
Also, I'd advise you to Bing/Google "GPU-Z" for a little proggy to take a look at your GPU in more depth--you don't really want to use a cpu-info program (CPU-Z) to tell you about your GPU, and vice-versa...

  • Problem on HP Pavilion dv7-6c90el with Windows 8 Pro x64 on Video Card

    good evening,
I just finished installing Windows 8 x64 from Win7 Pro, I was able to find all drivers for my notebook, but I have problems with the video card settings.
My laptop is a HP Pavilion dv7-6c90el with two video cards, one run by the processor because it seems to me to be a part, and the other normally installed on the PC.
The cards are read by Windows as:
device 1: Intel HD Graphics 3000
device 2: AMD Radeon HD 6700m Series (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM v1.20)
the problem resides in the fact that the device should be only one support per second, or deactivated, as it will not. The video card AMD should be set to 1, and the intel 2. Only if I go to the "Device Manager" to disable the intel card, Windows works as if it were not present any video card, also installed driver is not correct because the card is an AMD Radeon HD7690M XT, the problem is that even if I uninstall this driver then always comes back. I also tried to download AMD Catalyst in the latest version, but can not find the card. It 's like the Windows is imposed only use the device 1, which, however, I can not disable the BIOS, because there is no voice. I note that under Windows 7 had no problem.
I ask you to help me because I need the performance of the video card for my work.
    This question was solved.

  • Video Card??? And what does the Configuration assistant do besides nothing

I installed the Solaris 8 on my desktop (Asus P3V133). I followed the installation instructions and I can not use the video Card (S3540 Stealth). Thus, I keep going to command line instalation mode. After installation, i get to CDE fine, however, it is in monochrome mode. how can i configure the the video card from CDE (Is it possible). I need help with this. I know how to use UNIX commands, however, never configured a system before.....Thanks
    MJ

    Hi,
What is the exact make and manufacturer of your video card? I am not sure if you have checked the Hardware Compatibility List yet for the supported hardware? If not take a look at the following: http://soldc.sun.com/support/drivers/hcl/8/401/files/c0112.htm#VIDEO-1
To change the settings of your video card your best bet would be to open up a terminal and type "kdmconfig" this will let you change various system settings (video card settings, mouse, keyboard...etc).
    Hope This Helps

    Andrew

  • ITunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) did not fix choppy playback

After reading all the other posts I tried installing the (64 bit for older video cards) and it did not solve my choppy playback with Music or Movies.  I am running windows 8.1, Intel i7-4500U CPU @ 1.8GHz, 8 GB RAM, 64-bit OS, x64 based processor, DELL Inspirion 15.  Never had problems until upgrading to 8.1 from 8.0.

Did you see if changing the Play Audio Using select in Edit > Preferences > Playback to "Direct Sound" resolves the issue?  Otherwise you may want to consider rolling back to 12.0 and waiting until a future release is shown to resolve the playback issues in 12.1.  See Turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps needed to completely remove all installed iTunes components, and for links to the 12.0 installers.

  • HD video has choppy playback on timeline

    Equipment:
    New MacPro 2 X 2.93 GHz 6-Core intel Xeon
    12GBs Ram
Nvidia Quadro 4000 2048 MB video card
    Software 10.7.2
Video Card:  Kona 3 with 9.0.3 driver & 9.01 premier plugin
Videodrive:  7200 RPM 2 TB internal (not the system drive)  remaining space about 750 GB
    Adobe CS 5.5 software
I just switched from FCP 7 to CS5.5 including a new computer which I perceive is optimized for CS 5.5.  In playback my audio is choppy and dropping out some of the time, then if I stop and start the payback it will be fine, or sometimes there is no audio.  doesn't seem to be any consistencey in what will happen the next time I start playback.  On the timeline is a 1080i ProRes file I finished in FCP 7, then imported the video & audio file to Premier to make a couple of last minute changes.  Program is 50 minutes long.  I have the sequence setup as Kona 1080i compressed.  I imagine I have missed something very basic here, but don't have a clue what it could be.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thx...Jim Watt

    John,
I don't really think it's applicable in this particular situation.  I have just switched to PP for FCP-7.  All my FCP 7 shows are mastered in ProRes and this last one of course was too and it's the one I had to make a small change in.  I didn't see anything in the post you referred me to that suggests that PP cannot/will not play back proRes material.
At the moment I'm screening DVCPROHD 1080i material and I'm having the same problem with choppy playback/freezes and lost audio in the viewer.  I saw a post that came from Walter Biscardi for audio setup and followed that, which did seem to help a little, but the problem still exists.  This is what i did...
Audio...set preferences in Premier to "built in output" and also set audio mapping to same, set audio hardware to "built in output"  with caches at 1024
set computer preferences audio output to Kona card...
So I think this is some sort of setup that I have missed since I get identical problem with ProRes and DVCPROHD.  Any other sugestions will be most appreciated.  I'll give AJA a call tomorrow if I can't find a fix on the forum.
    thx...jw

  • I am experiencing choppy playback with converted .flv video file?

I have just reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro and then installed CS4. I have updated the suite and tried converting my first .avi file. I was told in a previous post that I should not use K-lite Codec pack with Pr Pro, so I tried using the Adobe Media Encoder included in the CS4 package. It took the media encoder a better part of an hour to covert Beerfest from an .avi file to a .flv file. I was hoping this would allow for a better quality playback, Unfortunately it did not work. During playback with no edits or cuts of any kind, I still experience huge sync problems with the audio and the video. I heard there is a way to use you GPU to accelerate the speed of Pr. Can someone please help me configure my system if that is possible?
Should I use a third party encoder or codec? IF so which one? Is there a general setup guide or tutorial that I can review so I can make sure all my settings are correct, for playing and editing .avi files?  Once I import an .avi file into a sequence, is there something more I should do before I begin to edit and playback?
If anyone could help me get started I would be very appreciative.
    My System
    AMD Anthlon 64 X2
    6400 3.2 GHZ (OverClocked to 3.42Ghz)
    8GB G-skill SDRAM (3.25GB recognized by XP Pro)c
    Nividia 8800GT Video Card
    OS Windows XP Pro SP3

I was told in a previous post that I should not use K-lite Codec pack with Pr Pro
This was good advice. K-Lite, though one of the more benign CODEC "packs," has still caused many users all sorts of grief.
Along with the answer to Jeff's question, please let us know the complete specs. on your Export. It could be something simple there.

  • CHOPPY FLASH VIDEO PLAYBACK WITH ADOBE FLASH VERSION 10-11

I'm  having a problem as described in a previous post re: Choppy flash videos, pictures, etc.. Youtube, megavideo any videos viewed online appear fine at first and then after 10-15 mins, start showing choppy. The audio was not a problem before, but I have noticed that it is being affected as well. I saw some posts on another forum a few days ago that recommended disabling flash player 11 in my chrome browser plugins and enabling verion 10 (which was available, but has since upgraded) and version 10 was working fine until it upgraded to 11 again. Now I have no options to revert to version 10 again.
    My system info is below:
    Sony:
    OS - Windows 7
    64 bit
    Browser Chrome 16.0.912.77
    Browser FireFox   9.0.1
    Browser IE 9
    Browser Safari 5.1.2
    Flash Player 11,1,102,55
McAfee (came with the upgrade of flash player)
This is very frustrating. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing, rebooting the browser, my pc, deleting cache files and cookies...NOTHING IS WORKING. CPU usage is between 20-35% when a video is active in my browser. I think that is normal, but I know that the choppy playback is not and it's only getting worse. Please HELP!
I hope this NEW POST will suffice as per your requirements.

When the video is choppy, how much CPU and RAM usage is occurring?  Do you have a graphics control panel that shows how much video RAM is in use when the video is choppy?
Do you have a list of sites and videos where the video is choppy?
If you don't want the McAffee add-on, remove it.

  • When will newer EVGA video cards be approved for Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration?

I built my system for video editing, Windows 7 Ultimate, i7 920Mhz, 24Gb RAM, ASUS Rampage III Extreme motherboard and EVGA GeForce GTX 570 video card. I decided to upgrade my video card to EVGA 660Ti with many more CUDA processors and 3GB memory, but when I rendered some video I got this message "The project was last used with Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration, which is not available on this system. Mercury Playback Engine Software only will be used." and it seemed the rendering was slower. Even though the EVGA newer Video cards have more memory and processor power and more CUDA cores and score better on Windows Experience Intex, Adobe does not approve them and say they use Merecury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration. Why? The Quadro cards are much more expensive have less memory, fewer CUDA cores but are rated higher by Adobe for Premiere and rendering, why is that? What gives? Why are the EVGA cards that seem more powerful and less expensive rated lower than the Quadro cards? Will this ever change?

    LOL!

  • I created a slideshow using lightroom3 with music at 1070p, then put it to both a CD and a DVD.  I cannot play either back on my iMac.  It is jumpy and unusable on playback.  Different Video card needed?  Any Help?

I created a slideshow using lightroom3 at 1070p with music.  After transferring the slideshow to a DVD I could not play it back on my iMac without a lot of skipping.  Any ideas? Different Video card??

As I said, I've not used Lightroom (and I tried to find some info on the Adobe website, but they like to make it difficult to find things - the only thing easy to find was the "buy" button LOL).
I get some pretty good quality - and actually reduce my videos from 1080 to 720p because of the enormous file size, rendering time required, and the fact that I simply cannot tell the difference on my 42" HDTV. My workflow is: create a slideshow in Photo to Movie (I've found that superior to anything else I've tried), add that to my iMovie project (in between video clips, etc), add transitions, titles, or whatever. Export at the highest settings (experimented with different settings on a 30 sec clip) to desktop. Fire up iDVD, customize a theme/menu with videos, music, stills and then add my movie(s). Encode there to highest quality, create a Video TS folder (which will include all the files necessary so you can delete the originals if you want) or burn from there. If I do the folder method, I use Roxio Toast to burn it at the slowest speed available.
Using that workflow, my movies rock (if I say so myself  ) and have a great quality. And I've never had a coaster.

  • Photoshop cs5-no video card detected in GPU settings

Running photoshop cs5 on a new iMac 27in with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M video card.  Under performance preferences GPU settings is not detecting the card.  What do i need to fix??

    Same issue here.
Running the same system here with the Geforce GTX 775m. Currently running OS 10.9.5.  Photoshop CC 2014 shows no GPU detected under Preferences and all video card related options are disabled.  I've tried installing nVidia's web driver, but it's not compatible, unfortunately.  The 10.9.5 update hasn't helped either and I haven't found any further driver update from Apple.
Is there a way to force detection or manually specify video card specs?

  • Can't identify video card on Windows 8 and Skyrim is choppy.

I have a late 2013 iMac with the following specs:
    8GB RAM
    3.4 GHZ Intel Quad-Core
Nvidia GeForce GTX 775m (2 GB GDDR5 Memory)
PS: When I look for driver for this model, it doesn't show up in Nvidia's website. Also, it shows the (m) models as Notebook models. I'm so confused.
When I am in Windows I can't find my graphics card. It says something about Basic Display Adapter and I can't find my video card. Can anyone help? My computer should well be fast enough for Skyrim and it's crawling to the point where I can't even get into the game after 15 mintues.
    Thanks.

did you install the boot camp drivers, specifically x5640, after windows was installed and hopefully before you ran the native updater in windows?

  • CPU & Video card Upgrade - Motherboard manual, GPIO switch settings, BIOS update or ?

According to the HP TouchSmart 600-1120 Desktop PC Product Specifications page the motherboard supports the following CPUs:
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:
    Intel Core i7 820QM Quad Core (C)
    Intel Core i7 720QM Quad Core (C)
    Intel Core i7 620M Dual Core (A)
    Intel Core i5 5x0M Dual Core (A)
    Intel Core i5 430M Dual Core (A)
I upgraded mine with the Intel Core i7 720QM Quad Core.  The two Quad Cord i7 processors do not have a GPU Video chip integrated on the CPU fab like the listed Dual Core processors,  and therefore neccesate the need for an external video card.
According to the HP TouchSmart 600-1120 Desktop PC Product Specifications page the motherboard supports One Mobile PCI Express Module (MXM) socket MXM version: 3.0, type A.
HP offered the NVIDIA GeForce GT 230 1GB DDR3 MXM Video Card , part # 513184-001 as an upgrade option on HP Touchsmart 600's, one would assume you could simply purchase this video card, and with either of these "supported" CPUs Intel Core i7 820QM Quad Core or Intel Core i7 720QM Quad Core and you would be in business, but NOOOO, it does not work!
I tried it on mine, using the Intel Core i7 720QM Quad Core and HP NVIDIA GeForce GT 230 1GB DDR3 MXM Video Card.  The display cycles through various colors, but does not actually provide a usable display.  I can tell the system does boot into Windows 7 (you can hear it) , but you cannot see anything.
There's a bank of DIP switches on the motherboard labled GPIO, which I'd assume is Graphics Processor Input Output, and perhaps there's a switch combo to switch from the Intel CPU/GPU to the MXM slot GPU??? i
I'm unable to find anywhere a manual on the Pentragram motherboard, this may tell how to set said GPIO dip switch if that's what needs to happen?
HP HELP!!!  Your site says the HP Touchsmart is upgradable to the above Intel Quad Core i7 and MXM Video card, BUT HOW?????

    Hi,
I suspect the NVIDIA GTX 760 that you are using is expecting a different BIOS level in the motherboard.  Most of the NVIDIA 760s that have experienced compatibility issues pretty much have been with HP motherboards that don't have version 8 or 80 BIOS level.  The HPE h8-1075UK only has a version 7 BIOS level.
MSI has two "N" model NVIDIA GTX  750 and 750 TI graphic cards that have a switch to allow compatibility with legacy and UEFI BIOS PCs.
