Choppy playback with QT 10?

Help!  I am using Quicktime 10 to watch some videos.  Video playback is very choppy, audio seems unaffected.  I am on a Macbook Pro, OS 10.6.7.  This problem just began a couple of weeks ago.  I always do all the software updates recommended by Software Update, so did this problem arise from an update?

If you're still using the DivX 5.2.1 component it could be the cause. The authors acknowledge some issues with QuickTime 7. They also offer a "beta" version of newer software.
Another possible solution to choppy playback might be found in the Audio MIDI Setup app (Utilities folder). Set the audio output format to 44100 Hz and try the file again.

  • Choppy playback with mxf files...

Hello.  I have been working with Premiere Pro CS3 for quite sometime until just recently.  Then last week I installed Windows 7, then Premiere Pro CS5.5 along with various updates.  I usually work with DVCProHD (Panasonic), 720p, 60p.  I just started working on a new project and playback is very choppy, whether the footage is rendered or not.  Everything else works fine.  My computer (purchased in 2008) has Dual Intel Xeon 5150 (10.64 Ghz total), 4GB DDR2-667 FBDIMM RAM (4x1GB), and an ATI FireGL V3350 256MB PCIe Video Card.  I am using a dual monitor set up as I used to do with Premiere Pro CS3 and Windows XP (with no problem before I went to CS5.5).   I checked the settings for the Mecury Playback and it seems to show that it is selected but also grayed out (can't be changed to anything else).  Anyone have thoughts on why the choppy playback?  Even Premiere 6.0 never gave me choppy playback  like this.  Thanks in advance.

    > Exactly how much RAM is Premiere Pro CS5.5 able to use at maximum?
All of it. That's one of the reasons that we ported Premiere Pro to be 64-bit.
Are all files of all types giving you choppy playback, or just some? If it's only some files, then tell us as much as you can about those files.

  • I am experiencing choppy playback with converted .flv video file?

I have just reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro and then installed CS4. I have updated the suite and tried converting my first .avi file. I was told in a previous post that I should not use K-lite Codec pack with Pr Pro, so I tried using the Adobe Media Encoder included in the CS4 package. It took the media encoder a better part of an hour to covert Beerfest from an .avi file to a .flv file. I was hoping this would allow for a better quality playback, Unfortunately it did not work. During playback with no edits or cuts of any kind, I still experience huge sync problems with the audio and the video. I heard there is a way to use you GPU to accelerate the speed of Pr. Can someone please help me configure my system if that is possible?
Should I use a third party encoder or codec? IF so which one? Is there a general setup guide or tutorial that I can review so I can make sure all my settings are correct, for playing and editing .avi files?  Once I import an .avi file into a sequence, is there something more I should do before I begin to edit and playback?
If anyone could help me get started I would be very appreciative.
    My System
    AMD Anthlon 64 X2
    6400 3.2 GHZ (OverClocked to 3.42Ghz)
    8GB G-skill SDRAM (3.25GB recognized by XP Pro)c
    Nividia 8800GT Video Card
    OS Windows XP Pro SP3

I was told in a previous post that I should not use K-lite Codec pack with Pr Pro
This was good advice. K-Lite, though one of the more benign CODEC "packs," has still caused many users all sorts of grief.
Along with the answer to Jeff's question, please let us know the complete specs. on your Export. It could be something simple there.
    Good luck,

  • Choppy playback with specific user

    Hi All-
I have an older Macbook Pro 2007, 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo, 6GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, 10.6.8.  I recently purchased a Nikon D800 and when I try to view the HD videos from the camera, it plays back choppy.
However, I created a new "Test" account on my Mac and it plays back perfectly smooth within that account.  Do I need to migrate to that new account or might there be some settings or preferences that I could look to change in my original to solve the choppy playback?
    Thank you very much-

  • Choppy Playback with CS5 and Quadro FX4800

    Hi All,
Can someone please advise, I'm running an i920 Clocked to 3.6 with 12gb of memory and a Quadro FX4800 with Premiere CS5, I've even downloaded the latest 197.85 driver and am experiencing seriously choppy play back with just 2 streams, one with opacity turned down slightly and get crap play back with Cross dissolves or simple dip to blacks , it sort of pauses then plays catch up when trying to play the files - this is seriously frustrating and nothing like the advertised videos.
The files are AVCHD 1080/60p files from my Panasonic TM700, playing a straight file on the timeline is sweet and no problem but add anything else and it plays like crap.I've even tried to reduce playback to 1/2 and 1/4 with no improvement.
The Footage, Scratch and project files are on seperate 500gb single platter fast drives (i've checked) and so know its not my drives / IO.
Does anyone know if its the AVCHD files or Premiere and has anyone else experienced / experiencing this???

I am having the same problem.  Working with Canon 5D 1080p footage @24 fps, using the DSLR preset for 1080/24p, and running up to two layers of footage, some ultra key applied in places.
    System is i7980x, 6GB RAM (1600mhz), Quadro fx4800, running windows 7 64 bit.
Everything was running like butter a week ago (same sequence, settings, effects), but now RT playback is too choppy for practical use.
    Help!  Thanks

  • YouTube Fullscreen Choppy Playback with mid 2011 iMac

    Hello,
I have a BTO 27" iMac with 3.4 GHz i7 and the 6970M 2GB graphics card. Everything else is stock. The problem I'm having is that with every YouTube video at any quality (240p, 360p, 480p, 720p, 1080p) played in fullscreen, the playback is choppy. It's not my internet connection because I've even let the video load completely. Also when I exit fullscreen, it's perfectly smooth. This is very surprising to me. However, with Vimeo and other flash videos at fullscreen the playback is nice and smooth. Has anyone else experienced this? What do you recommend? In the mean time I've been doing the scroll to zoom to fullscreen videos.

Thanks for your reply. What you restated is correct. With any browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox), YouTube within the window plays fine until I click fullscreen. When I exit fullscreen it's back to smooth. I checked the Graphics section and everything looks fine. This is what I see:

I just did a complete shutdown and booted it up again. Still choppy. I'm guessing it's an Adobe Flash thing but if no one else with the same setup as my iMac is having the same problem maybe I should bring it up with Apple.

  • Choppy Playback With iTunes 8.2.1

    Hey everyone,
Ever since iTunes 8.2 (and now in iTunes 8.2.1), I have noticed that when opening other programs, or sometimes when I load new Web pages, my music playback will chop for just a second or two, and then continue playing as usual.
I've done what was suggested on the support pages aimed at troubleshooting sound and playback issues, and those suggestions did not seem to do any good with my issue. Like I said, this started right after updating to version 8.2; prior, no matter how much of a load my system was undergoing, I never seemed to have any sound-related issues.
I've noticed that if I open the Task Manager, and set the priority for iTunes.exe to AboveNormal, that the issue goes away. I'm just curious why this seems to have cropped up after the 8.2 update.
    Thanks for any information!

I had the same issue with a Thinkpad X200s laptop's built-in MM keys plus an old Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro's MM keys, and found this solution in my bookmarks which is working great for me in Vista 64 + iTunes 8.2.1.6 with both sets of keys:
    http://www.everythingitunes.com/os/windows/2008-01-04/mmkeysdll/
It had also worked a year ago on Vista 32 for a Dell M1330. Very easy too -- I just placed the .dll in the Plugins directory and restarted iTunes.

  • Choppy playback with AVCHD Videos

I have a 2013 souped up Macbook Pro.  I just got a new Canon XA20 that shoots in AVCHD.  The playback seems slightly jerky in the AVCHD format on my Macbook Pro.  Does anyone have any suggestions.  This dhould not be a RAM, or SD card issue as those are all top of he line.

I did some more testing today using the FullHD clips (those specified in my original post) with Radeon 6970.
I can speed up the clips to cca 750% without any issues. While playing back this sped up clip the CPU is used at 50-60 %. (disk read is cca 25MB/s)
When I speed the clip up to 850% the playback runs for a few seconds while the CPU is being used cca 60% and then suddenly becomes an unwatchable slideshow while the CPU usage drops to 30-40%. (disk read cca 30MB/s)
When I speed the clip up to my sometimes desired 5000% the playback runs for a few frames and then becomes an unwatchable slideshow while the CPU usage drops to 25-35%. (disk read cca 45MB/s, odd)
    So absolutely no change here.
    Any ideas, Adobe?

  • ITunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) did not fix choppy playback

After reading all the other posts I tried installing the (64 bit for older video cards) and it did not solve my choppy playback with Music or Movies.  I am running windows 8.1, Intel i7-4500U CPU @ 1.8GHz, 8 GB RAM, 64-bit OS, x64 based processor, DELL Inspirion 15.  Never had problems until upgrading to 8.1 from 8.0.

Did you see if changing the Play Audio Using select in Edit > Preferences > Playback to "Direct Sound" resolves the issue?  Otherwise you may want to consider rolling back to 12.0 and waiting until a future release is shown to resolve the playback issues in 12.1.  See Turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps needed to completely remove all installed iTunes components, and for links to the 12.0 installers.

  • Choppy playback in fcp x 10.1

Since I updated to FCP X 10.1 I get choppy playback with almost all my clips. From old HDV to h.264 and even Poxy files play with audio drop outs, and mostly choppy. On the drive the files are hosted I get 240 MegaBytes/s. Editing is very unresponsive. Sometimes I have to wait for 10 or more seconds until the playhead is ready.
Seems to me like a bug, as that wasn't the case in Final Cut Pro X 10.0.9.

What you are experiencing is NOT normal.
I would try deleting preferences, and also checking the drive.
    How big is/are your library(es)?
If you imported everything into a big library that may be causing some trouble.
Also: how much RAM, and what does Activity Monitor report about RAM pressure? (don't worry if it appears that there is no free RAM, unless RAM "pressure" is high and/or there is significant swap space).
If I had to bet I'd say a very big library may be to blame. You may need to give a thought on how best to organize things with the new media management model. The solution depends on your workflow, but the ability to have manageable size libraries that you can open and close as needed, and move from one drive to another, together with the easy handling of managed or external media, open up a number of great possibilities.

  • CHOPPY FLASH VIDEO PLAYBACK WITH ADOBE FLASH VERSION 10-11

I'm  having a problem as described in a previous post re: Choppy flash videos, pictures, etc.. Youtube, megavideo any videos viewed online appear fine at first and then after 10-15 mins, start showing choppy. The audio was not a problem before, but I have noticed that it is being affected as well. I saw some posts on another forum a few days ago that recommended disabling flash player 11 in my chrome browser plugins and enabling verion 10 (which was available, but has since upgraded) and version 10 was working fine until it upgraded to 11 again. Now I have no options to revert to version 10 again.
    My system info is below:
    Sony:
    OS - Windows 7
    64 bit
    Browser Chrome 16.0.912.77
    Browser FireFox   9.0.1
    Browser IE 9
    Browser Safari 5.1.2
    Flash Player 11,1,102,55
McAfee (came with the upgrade of flash player)
This is very frustrating. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing, rebooting the browser, my pc, deleting cache files and cookies...NOTHING IS WORKING. CPU usage is between 20-35% when a video is active in my browser. I think that is normal, but I know that the choppy playback is not and it's only getting worse. Please HELP!
I hope this NEW POST will suffice as per your requirements.

When the video is choppy, how much CPU and RAM usage is occurring?  Do you have a graphics control panel that shows how much video RAM is in use when the video is choppy?
Do you have a list of sites and videos where the video is choppy?
If you don't want the McAffee add-on, remove it.

  • HD video has choppy playback on timeline

    Equipment:
    New MacPro 2 X 2.93 GHz 6-Core intel Xeon
    12GBs Ram
Nvidia Quadro 4000 2048 MB video card
    Software 10.7.2
Video Card:  Kona 3 with 9.0.3 driver & 9.01 premier plugin
Videodrive:  7200 RPM 2 TB internal (not the system drive)  remaining space about 750 GB
    Adobe CS 5.5 software
I just switched from FCP 7 to CS5.5 including a new computer which I perceive is optimized for CS 5.5.  In playback my audio is choppy and dropping out some of the time, then if I stop and start the payback it will be fine, or sometimes there is no audio.  doesn't seem to be any consistencey in what will happen the next time I start playback.  On the timeline is a 1080i ProRes file I finished in FCP 7, then imported the video & audio file to Premier to make a couple of last minute changes.  Program is 50 minutes long.  I have the sequence setup as Kona 1080i compressed.  I imagine I have missed something very basic here, but don't have a clue what it could be.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thx...Jim Watt

    John,
I don't really think it's applicable in this particular situation.  I have just switched to PP for FCP-7.  All my FCP 7 shows are mastered in ProRes and this last one of course was too and it's the one I had to make a small change in.  I didn't see anything in the post you referred me to that suggests that PP cannot/will not play back proRes material.
At the moment I'm screening DVCPROHD 1080i material and I'm having the same problem with choppy playback/freezes and lost audio in the viewer.  I saw a post that came from Walter Biscardi for audio setup and followed that, which did seem to help a little, but the problem still exists.  This is what i did...
Audio...set preferences in Premier to "built in output" and also set audio mapping to same, set audio hardware to "built in output"  with caches at 1024
set computer preferences audio output to Kona card...
So I think this is some sort of setup that I have missed since I get identical problem with ProRes and DVCPROHD.  Any other sugestions will be most appreciated.  I'll give AJA a call tomorrow if I can't find a fix on the forum.
    thx...jw

  • What configuration of the new macbook pro do I need to run FCS 3 without choppy playback.

Yep, just wondering what configuration of the new macbook pro do I need to run FCS 3 without choppy playback or lagging.  I'm thinking about the 7200rpm, 2.2ghz, antiglare, 4gb ram, with 1gb GPU graphics card configuration

Nothing wrong with the computer. Playback is dependent on the media and the drives.

  • Choppy Playback when using the PLAYBACK feature in preferences

I've been running into an issue since the PPro CC 7.1 update in October where Premiere will play footage just fine until you tell it to send a signal out to another monitor. Before hand everyhting played fine in the Program and Playback Monitors. Now whenever switched on it plays back choppy constantly. Doesn't matter the footage format.
To further explain -- I have a 3 monitor setup 2 for editing and a thrid for preview playback. All of this runs via my Retina MacBook Pro and has worked fine since PPro 6.0. Never had any slowdown and its been one of my favorite features in PPro.
So when this update came around I ran into the playback issues mentioned above. So I just keep playback switched off and just leave the third monitor barren... figuring it was a bug (?) I waited and saw a few updates, but nothing that fixed said problem. Though with each update and bug fix I've eagerly gone through the same exercise of trying out this feature once more. Again, nothing has changed... However I found out this evening, that when using my three monitors and suffering through the playback, that I can tell monitor to toggle to full screen and instantly my playback monitor has corrected itself and the two play in perfect sync (quick note the program monitor is choppy when not in full screen mode and trying to playback with the third monitor). I can toggle on and off during this playback and when on its fine, the moment its off, its choppy again. Absolutely bizzare. And to some extent makes my playback monitor somewhat useful agian... albeit in a very tedious fashion.
The point is, I'm at my wits end again here. I've seen plenty of choppy playback post, but nothing quite like this. I've tried to clearing caches, and preferences, even did a unistall/reistall tongiht... and I'm coming up with the same issues in the exact same places. But ultimately I am no closer to finding a proper solution to this particular playback issue. Aside from doing a clean install of the OS and all my software, though I'm not sure its worth it just yet. Even if its my last resort.
Has anyone run across playback as bizzare as this? Did you find a solution? Is there a post I've missed? - Thanks
