Choppy/skipping flash video

I have a late 2011 iMac (21.5") that has worked pretty well since purchase in November, 2011. However recently I started to experience severe lagging and even major skipping when viewing Flash video content on a number of different sites. The behavior exists in both Firefox and Safari, and I've tried a clean install of Flash twice now with no improvement. I also upgraded my router to address intermittent wireless outages that I thought were contributing to the video performance issues. I was previously using an old Airport Express, and purchased a new Airport Extreme. That improved my wireless performance dramatically. Constant signal drops disappeared, and my speedtest.net speed went from all over the map with an average of 5Mbps to a smooth steady 50Mbps almost every time. However the video issues have persisted. Yesterday I downloaded temperature monitor to see if overheating was an issue. Here are my readings after about 40 minutes of running flash content:
I just purchased an APC UPS (something I've been meaning to do anyway) but I'm doubtful power fluctuations are the culprit. I'll try plugging directly into the router of course, to see if somehow flash content is causing some wifi signal variance that speedtest doesn't pick up. But I'm beginning to worry that my GPU is the real issue here. Anyone have a similar issue or any other ideas? I do still have Apple Care so if it's a hardware issue I do believe I can have it replaced at no cost.

Well this is funny. After all my troubleshooting and research, last night my flash video was smooth as butter and crystal clear. What changed? I have a feeling it was related to this:
http://www.businessinsider.com/timewarner-down-2014-8
I think even though Speedtest was showing a constant download speed of 50Mpbs it was masking an ISP issue that was resolved after the national outage. Glad that happened before I dropped $180 on a RAM upgrade.

  • Choppy fullscreen flash video playback

When I enter fullscreen in many flash videos, the videos get choppy.  This is true across different browsers.  It happens on different web sites, but not with the exact same symptoms.  Some web sites' videos will work in fullscreen if I recently opened the browser, while others consistently are choppy in fullscreen.  For example, youtube or hulu will work if I recently opened safari, but mlb.tv will consistently be choppy.
All of my software is up to date.  I've tried repairing my disk permissions.  I've downloaded shockwave for 64 bit.  I've tried downloading the most recent beta of flash, but it didn't work, so I downgraded to the most recent official version.  None of it has worked.
    Please help!

I also found a solution that works for me. I completley uninstalled Flash from my Mac. I couldn't happier with the results. My Macbook Pro Battery life is more than doubled, It is no longer ever too hot place on my lap. My fan/s almost never come on anymore.
I use Safari as my main browser. Most sites detect my lack of Flash and convert video and adds to HTML just fine. Netflix works fine on it since it works off Siverlight. If I do need to visit a sight that requires Flash, (hulu) I just open it in Chrome which has Flash built into it. Visiting Flash sites on Chrome by the way is the only time my Mac gets hot and requires the fans to come on. Best fix I've ever done for my Mac. Litterally everything I do or run my Mac is faster and smoother. I no longer have sticking or spinning balls waits while flash decides if it needs to be working for this for whatever process or app I'm trying to use. Life on my Mac has been grand since Flash got the boot.

  • Choppy Fullscreen flash video

    Hello,
I have a late 2012 21.5 inch base model iMac. And for some time now flash video has been choppy in fullscreen in both Google Chrome and Safari. It wasn't always so, when I bought the iMac last year in December it was working fine.
I tried reinstalling the flash player plugin but with no effect. Sometimes fullscreen video works fine, other times it is not. Sometimes putting chrome in fullscreen mode then making the video fullscreen improves performance, sometimes it does not.
I also have Windows 7 in Boot Camp and fullscreen flash videos (like youtube) work flawlessly all the time.
I checked the forums for different solutions, none work. One idea was to make sure that the dedicated graphics card is actually working and not the integrated one, but the new iMac does not even have an integrated card, just the dedicated one.
I have no overheating problems and as far as I can tell only flash video has a problem.
Anyone know how to fix this?

  • Choppy flash video, images and pictures

hello i have been noticing choppy images, flash videos, site pictures recently. whenever i watch a video on youtube, dailymothion, mega video i can see little bitmaps and some choppiness in the videos even when i look at pictures on sites still the same. I have unistalled and reinstalled adobe flash player, shockwave player to its latest version but still the same problem and it is starting to really drive me mad. I have also reinstalled my graphic and its updated to the latest version as well. I dont know what the problem is and its starting to get really really fustrating i have been having this problem 2 weeks ago and still cannot find a fix for it. f******* hell...!
This is what the images looks like.
I have already tried everything...that i can think of and still no use...
Note: Using Firefox atm, same problem on internet explorer as well.................

I'm also having the same problem as Gaduk. Youtube, megavideo any videos viewed online appear fine at first and then after 10-15 mins, start showing choppy. The audio was not a problem before, but I have noticed that it is being affected as well. I saw some posts on another forum a few days ago that recommended disabling flash player 11 in my chrome browser plugins and enabling verion 10 (which was available, but has since upgraded) and version 10 was working fine until it upgraded to 11 again. Now I have no options to revert to version 10 again.
    My system info is below:
    Sony:
    OS - Windows 7
    Browser Chrome 16.0.912.77
    Browser FireFox   9.0.1
    Browser IE 9
    Browser Safari 5.1.2
    Flash Player 11,1,102,55
McAfee (came with the upgrade of flash player)
This is very frustrating. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing, rebooting the browser, my pc, deleting cache files and cookies...NOTHING IS WORKING. CPU usage is between 20-35% when a video is active in my browser. I think that is normal, but I know that the choppy playback is not and it's only getting worse. Please HELP!

  • Flash video skipping

Hi. I've done some searching and can't figure out how to resolve this. And it's driving me crazy.
For some time now, Flash video playback has been skipping chronically on my MBP. I thought it might be because I needed to do some housecleaning, but I've done that and it's still skipping.
Play any video -- webisodes, Youtube, whatever -- and the picture skips. The audio plays straight through, but the picture will stick and skip.
I'm using OS X 10.5.6, Firefox 3.0.9, updated flash player, etc. My 180GB hard drive has 49GB free. I've got 4GB RAM and it skips even when no other programs are open. I've repaired permissions. Video still skipping.
Any suggestions? What can I do? Please help... online video is unwatchable.

    +do this without the disc?+
    See if this helps:
Boot holding down Apple/S and don't let go until you see scrolling text.
When that stops and you see a root#: prompt enter
    *fsck -fy*
Let it run through all the checks and repairs.
If it fails first time, at any time, or finds and fixes a fault - _run the command again and keep doing so_ (some fixes can take several passes) until it says "Appears to be OK" then enter
    reboot
The other thing to check is your streaming settings:
Open System Preferences/Quicktime and click the Streaming Tab
Set the speed to one lower than your actual connection
    Check Instant On
Move the slider a couple of notches from the left
(I know you're having trouble with Flash content but just try this to humor me ;-))

  • Flash video is choppy!!

I am in a language program in Cairo and purchased a macbook right before heading out here. We have language DVDs to help us with the Arabic and when I try to run it my flash video runs in a choppy fashion.
The disc works beautifully on other (non-intel) macs and on intel machines .
All of the Macbook at the apple center here in Cairo had the same problem.
I'd like to get help from apple via email, but couldn't figure out how.
Looking forward to reading your ideas,
    Kaveh

The version of Flash Player you should have is 9.0.20.0.

I hope this NEW POST will suffice as per your requirements.

When the video is choppy, how much CPU and RAM usage is occurring?  Do you have a graphics control panel that shows how much video RAM is in use when the video is choppy?
Do you have a list of sites and videos where the video is choppy?
If you don't want the McAffee add-on, remove it.

  • Flash Video Jerky / Choppy Fullscreen Chrome

I've been having this problem for a couple of years using Flash video across ALL websites.  When I play a full screen flash video, the video gets choppy or jerky.  The audio continues perfectly.  I'm a pretty tech and computer savvy person, so I have tried a lot of the fixes I could think of.  I ended up finding one SOLUTION to the jerky video that works EVERY SINGLE TIME.  If I right-click the full-screen video, and allow the settings menu to remain on top of the video while it plays, I NEVER have issues with jerky or choppy video.  If I cancel the settings menu, the jerkiness returns immediately and remains throughout the video duration.  To help diagnose this, here's my specs and stuff I have tried.
    Dell 1764 running Win 7 x64 on a Core i5 processor, 4Gig RAM.
all builds of chrome in the last couple of years, w/ and w/out the included flash (i.e. disabling in about:plugins).
24mbps cable connection, with no buffering issues noted
Cleared cookies, history, temp files, ran anti-virus and spyware.
Have always been up-to-date w/ windows updates.
Fullscreen videos that do work flawlessly:
Netflix using the Silverlight plugin.  Youtube HTML5 videos.  Any DVD's or downloaded videos play perfectly in VLC and MPC.
So, in summation:  Flash vidoes in fullscreen are Jerky/choppy using Chrome browser.  When I right-click and allow that menu to remain on top, jerkiness goes away.  Cancel the right-click menu, problems return.

No worries.  I appreciate the feedback, and just want to make sure I'm understanding the data that I'm collecting clearly.
We're aware that there are random short-lived problems that happen during transitions in and out of full-screen and scrubbing.  We have a number of bugs open on the engineering team around it.  In general, these are usually complex timing-related problem with a bunch of interrelated, moving parts (codec, network latency, buffering, stream quality, hardware, browser, etc).  They're really hard to debug.  It continues to be a big area of focus for both the dev and quality engineering teams, and something we're investing a lot of time and energy into improving.
Also, it's worth pointing out that we test a pretty large matrix of graphics cards, and we partner directly with many of the GPU vendors -- but there's a ton of fragmentation and we can't check every single card that's out there in the world.  If we see a bunch of bugs coming in about a particular configuration, we do our best to track the card down and take a look.
If you find instances where you're able to reproduce playback problems consistently, please file a bug.  Include a direct link to the video/videos that you can consistently reproduce the video problems with, and include the output of dxdiag (or the graphics card info from the System Information tool on Mac).  OS and Browser versions are also very useful.
I'm not personally involved in the work around PPAPI for Flash Player, but we have a whole team working on building a great experience for Chrome and Pepper.  Disabling PepperFlash where it's enabled will generally cause Chrome to fall back to the stanadard NPAPI-based Flash Player instead.  Keep an eye out for announcements about preview releases for Flash Player on PPAPI -- I'm sure the team will appreciate your feedback once they become available.

  • Flash video loaded into FLV Player choppy

I just upgraded to Flash 8 tonight, so I'm a little bit of a
newbie as to the new FLV Player that's included (so cool though!!!)
I was supposed to add a Preloader to a client's file tonight
    and got nowhere :(
The Flash video that's being loaded into the FLV Player is
choppy and I can't figure out how to add a preloader. I tried the
AS from the help file, but it didn't work out. I'm assuming this AS
is not for use with the FLV Player?
Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I'm at my wits end with this
and confused as to why I can't preload the movie. The preloader
just blinks for a second, then the movie plays but it's large so it
gets choppy every now and then.
    thanks!

Actually I did try setting the buffer to 10 and it didn't
correct the problem. Tried adding the suggested FLV Preloader but
it doesn't work with this instance (component loading external
movie file) so I ended up having to use a different FLV Player
altogether and it worked fine. Seems like there is something wrong
with the built-in component -i f another FLV Player works perfectly
without any additional programming or tweaking and was developed by
an outside source (other than Adobe.)
    Thanks for your reply though.

  • Skipping Problem when vieweing Flash Videos

    Hi.
I've downloaded and istalled the latest flash plugin, but
videos on sites like youtube and google videos skip every few
    seconds. It's really, really annoying.
I'm running XP on a 1.0 Ghz Athlon (not Athlon 64, just
Athlon). Have about 320 mb ram. Also have this Riva TNT2 32mb video
    card.
I've tried to watch videos on both Firefox 2 and Internet
Explorer 7, but both are the same. When I download flash videos
though, and play them through VLC player or something like that, I
don't get any skips. It's just for online videos.
No, it's not about loading the videos either. Even if I wait
until the video's fully loaded, The skipping's still there. And no,
nothing's running in the background as I play the videos.
I've also tried to uninstall the plugin via the "flash
uninstaller" downloaded from adobe, reboot, reinstall the plugin,
reboot. No Dice. Also tried running a few antispyware programs.
    Still skips.
I've tried turning off the windows firewall, and tried
without any other anti-virus or firewall running, and still get
    skips.
It's as if the video's refreshing every 3-6 seconds...
    Please help
    Edit:
Just tried downloading Opera for the hell of it and trying to
watch videos on it, but still get skips. Also tried firefox's safe
    mode (no plugins).

    Hi 9000,
Have you verified flash is up to date? If it's not up to date, have you considered downloading & the latest flash player?
While your at it, you may want to verify that Adobe ShockWave is up to date. And if it's not, download and install the latest 64-bit shockwave player.
If your still having issues, have you tried using another account on your dad's computer? dose it have the same issue?
if it's only your dad's account that has issues, you may want to try deleting flash cookies by using a program like Flush.app – Flash Cookie Removal Tool For OS X.
    cheers,
    -TT

  • Choppy flash video

i noticed the flash videos from nba.com  are choppy on my 21.5 late 2009 imac 8GB ram. Its not buffering because the video loads in totality and still its choppy. I tried everything... uninstal flash player, unistal browser, try different browser, clear cache, reinstal OS.... . I am using currently SL since lion was kinda slow on my machine. Anyone having the same issue? Any advice?

  • Choppy Flash video/audio in fullscreen. Fix!

I've been banging my head against the wall for 24 hours now and this works for me.
I have an old MacBook Pro, 10.6.8, newest version of Chrome, Safari and Firefox, and a new Focusrite USB audio interface (Scarlett 2i2).
Installed the newest Flash player (11 something) and the Focusrite yesterday and everything went bad. Choppy fullscreen video, no audio in Chrome etc etc. So anyway, now it's all fine:
MAC/FLASH: Choppy video, no audio FIX.
    1. UNINSTALL FLASH PLAYER. It *****. And it gobbles CPU power.
    2. Bin the whole Macromedia folder from ~/Library/Preferences.
    3. USE CHROME FOR FLASH SITES (has built in flash player - close Chrome when not in use to shut its flash player, to save CPU power).
    4. ALSO: Have a USB audio interface? AUDIO MIDI SETUP: 44.1kHz OUTPUT.
That's it. Everything is now smooth in fullscreen in Chrome, and great audio through the Focusrite box.
    *fingers crossed*

Does removing flash have any affect on the other browsers?
Yes - flash videos will not play in other browsers. Chrome has built-in flash so it still works.
However some YouTube videos will (after 2 seconds or so) detect that you don't have flash and default to H264 playback which seems to work fine.
I've now been using Chrome only for flash palyback for a couple of weeks and it works fine if you follow the steps above.
Last point - I often have to set Youtube to something lower than HD playback. Maybe just an internet speed thing.

  • Choppy Flash videos

Flash videos (such as the videos posted on http://www.greenday.com/site/picsnvids.php ) are very choppy.  I tried to reduce the Hardware Acceleration in the Display Settings, but that option is dimmed/unavailable on the TouchSmart.  I'm using Windows7,  Flash Player 10.1, and Verizon DSL.  Any suggestions?

I have had the problem with these browsers as well as with firefox. It seems I have resolved the issue playing with dimix device parameters playing in /etc/asound.conf (or with ~/.asoundrc if you use last one). Look at alsa wiki.
    http://alsa.opensrc.org/Dmix
I avoid and don't use pulseaudio (in fact is isn't installed).

  • When I try to play a flash video (like youtube) i have to click a flash button several times before it works. Why do flash videos not recogonize any clicks without several tries first?

When I try to go to a flash video, the video player never seems to recognize my mouse clicks without several tries.
It's hard to explain but if I'm at a youtube video and i place my cursor over the button that lets you skip around the video, the cursor will alternate being a cursor (like its not recognized) and a hand like its supposed to. It's sort of keeps flickering between the two if I move the mouse around on that little skip button.
I tried uninstalling firefox but it didn't make a difference. I noticed it after updating to the newer firefoxe updates. This does not happen under IE.

  • Flash Video in Safari

I have a G5, and when I play a flash video (like youtube) the video I get it very choppy and sluggish. The audio is smooth, but the images are choppy compared to my PC. Is this standard on macs? Is my computer getting old?

    Hi Devin
The choppy content may be more a function of the OS and Flash versions installed in your machine.
Noticed you are using 10.4.6. Is that correct? Best to be at least at 10.4.10 (.11 upgrades Safari to version 3.0.4). You can upgrade to .11 via Software Update. Upgrade to 10.4.10 is here. Remember to "repair permissions" after the Install using Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
Specific to YouTube, are you using the latest version of Flash? You can check your version here. If you upgrade, make sure you "repair permissions" as per above.
