Choppy, Sputtering, intermitent gameplay on k9a2, 4870 1gb

I have had some majorly choppy and intermittent gameplay on my k9a2 (bios v1.6) with the 4870 1GB (toxic) and 9950be 125w. I use both catalyst 8.12 and 8.53 (came w/ card) and vista x64. This is a major issue with almost any game and any setting ( high or low, vsync on or off, any filer setting) and it is getting INCREASINGLY WORSE Any Ideas? I could really use the help. I also have some stock (ug!) 800MHz ram with all of this, but I find it hard to believe that is the problem (worked fine in another computer)
My computer runs all games on max (or used to...) at 1440x900 w/ filters but does not run clean! It sputters from a good frame (like say, 40-60 fps (vsync really slows it down!) to a terrible 1 or 2 fps quickly, promoting an "intermittent" lag.
Then, this event occurs every few minutes! (biggest notice- supreme commander and mass effect) The slightest movement produces this annoying "lag" that is usually not benchmarked by fraps but is very noticeable.
Please Help :(

I believe this is a board or video card issue. I have recieved a new (and working) psu (same one replaced from tiger) but have sent back the motherboard and the graphics card (possible that they both shorted).
For those that like 4870/ati/msi please tell me if this is evident at all in any situation (I need polls, number crunching, ect. I might go to nvidia/asus)
Evidence that ati card is the issue:

". With the 512MB Radeon HD 4870 we encountered some lag or pausing when you complete one task and have the next task loading. We also noticed some lag and pausing when moving into new areas, new buildings, new scenes that were loading into view..." "...however, with the 1GB 4870 these pauses didn’t occur at all, there were smoother transitions through the Stalker world as we would walk or run through it. When we entered new areas, new buildings, or new tasks loaded it was seamless, just the way we’d expect it to be, and thus in that way it helps the gameplay experience positively. It should also be noted the GTX 260 was also smoother in this way, because it too has a large memory capacity"

  • ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB for Mac Pro 2.66 Quad Core Xenon

I have the option of picking up an ATI Radeon HD 4870 1 GB graphics card to go with my soon-to-be-new MAc Pro 2.66 Quad core. I see know that Apple can upgrade to ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB, but that card is not available to me at the moment. Will the 1GB do the job without overheating the system? Am new to the Mac Pros. Need it for the Windows gaming portion of the system. Am using the rest for graphics and photography.

If the MAc Pro 2.66 comes with Snow Leopard, why would I have to upgrade my OS?
OK. So, if got the MAc version, it would work A-OK without overheating?
    Thanks for your input!

    Three questions:
    1. Is the radeon hd 4870 1GB card supported inside the new MacPros or is it only the 512mb version?
    2. Does this card support two displays?
    3. If no support for two displays, can I put two cards in one MacPro provided I have the pci slots available?

    1. No, the Apple online store will identify the models that are compatible with your system. They are, without getting too technical, setup specifically for Mac systems. A normal off-the-shelf 4870 512MB or 1GB will not work - it must be "for Mac". There are ways to make PC version cards work, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're very familiar with reflashing cards.

    2. Yes, but if you want to connect (2) DVI type monitors, you'll need to purchase a MiniDisplay Port --> DVI adapter.
    3. N/A - see #2.

  • Can i Have Your Attention Please !

I need all of your suggestions immediately,
I am using AMD Athlon X2 6000+ 3.0 Ghz. So i will be upgrading to AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8Ghz.
Now before i upgrade, Do you think it will perform better than Athlon X2 6000+ in Games ? ( I'm Not gonna Overclock the Phenom II, I'll use it at factory clocked ) & i play games most of the time.
    My Specs are:
    AMD Athlon X2 6000+  @ 3.0Ghz
MSI K9A2 Platinum     Bios Version 1.7
Please People don't just read the topic, reply me. Your suggestion will be very much appreciated. Thank You

every one i really appreciate your suggestions & helps,
    Bas I'm sorry for not giving my complete specs & windows etc so here it is;
    AMD Athlon X2 6000+   @ 3000 mhz
    MSI K9A2 Platinum      Bios v 1.7
    His.Tech Ati Radeon Hd 4850 512mb
    2x2 gb kingston       4-4-4-12  @ 2.1v
    Corsair HX 520watts Psu
22 inch LCD by View sonic.
    Windows Vista ultimate 32bit.
My problem is that the games mostly like crysis etc lags, not just even lags! it lags ALOT.
As i got some advice from a friend that most of the games are good to be played with Nvidia cards, As i did experienced Nvidia 8600gt
Which was a very very good card. After the release of Ati radeon 4800 series, i decided to get 4850.
Honestly i did expected the card to run most of the games @ 1860x1050 resoluton & all the high settings. I'm Not saying i couldn't !
I did in some of the games but a few that were Nvidia based games like crysis etc which they prefer Nvidia than ATI.
When Mirror's Edge came out with Nvidia's physix, i was so sad that ATI doesn't have the support for physix, I really really love Mirror's Edge.
So now i decided to get a Nvidia card, so in my list 1st.....it was EVGA gtx 260 SSC (Super super clocked) which is far way better than ATI Radeon 4870 1gb,
215$ in newegg with mail in rebate, but when i heard of Gtx 275 to be released on 9th april, so i thought to wait & see what it will offer.
Anyways i guess i got my answer, i think i don't need the CPU 720 for better gaming which gives the same result as the P II 720 rite ?

  • 790FX-GD70 Memory Problems

First off let me say MSI has done a stellar job with this board and I personally would like to thank the bios makers, as they consistently put forth effort to release good beta bios.  Now onto my problems.  Here is my system:
    # AMD Phenom II x2 550
    # 790FX-GD70 bios 1.5b3
    # 2x2gb OCZ3P1600LVAM4GK (1600mhz 7-7-7-24 @1.65v)
    # Sapphire Radeon 4870 1gb
    # Samsung Spinpoint 750gb
    # Windows 7 x64
    # Corsair TX850W
No matter what I do I can not get the memory to run at 1600mhz.  I know AMD doesn't officially support it, but maybe MSI should reconsider advertising speeds of ddr3 2133+.  I have tried the following settings:
    cpu-nb voltage: up to 1.45v
    nb-voltage: up to 1.3v
    dram voltage: up to 1.67v
These settings are applied at both stock and overclocked settings, which I know are prime95 stable.  I have tried it with my processor as a dual core and also as a quad core using ACC (which works great btw!)  I have seen people run 1600mhz on the am3 platform so I know it is possible with tweaking.  What kind of settings do I need to mess with?
edit: 1333mhz 6-6-5-20 seems pretty good with NB @ 2600 seems good.  Also there are some things I would like to tell MSI about this bios and maybe help them test new beta directly.  If any MSI engineer is reading this please contact me

Mate get your cpu/nb back to 1.1 or 1.2v, where you have it is way to high.
The problem you have is you're not giving the ram enough voltage. set it between 1.7 and 1.8v. Try 1.72v for starters.

    Vga : HIS Radeon 4850
Psu : Thermaltake Pure Power 420w (i've already check it, n still work fine)
    Thx Before

    Hi
I have similar problem with my X48C and have taken me 6 months to stablelise the dame thing. this is the worst documented and manufactured board i ever come across.
To enable this board to function properly. you need to update the bios to at lease V7.3      I was using the raid features for my 2x1T Samsung HD. Boy it sucks! i have to disable the raid reature and forever forget using it. It bring more pain than joy in using it. i use a back up utility is much better than using the raid feature. it is more efficient and appears to work faster without the raid feature turned on.
    use SATA IDE mode.
Next the motherboard is so under Voltage that it create the random freeze in game mode. Thank to the various forum and i finally figure out why this stupid board freezes. Why? because it is an under voltage board. you must be on OverClock (OC) mode all the time. you need to manually set the CPU Voltage, Ram voltage and MCH voltages. When you are on OC mode you have to disable some of the neat features which are some of the feature of the Motherboard.
You can leave most of the Bios setting to default. Except the {Cell Menu} option. This is the menu for to specify settings on Frequency/voltage and overclocking.( Well i am not trying to OC but I have to set this manually to achieve stability)
Disable the Intel EIST mode. (Enhance intel Speedstep technology)
Disable DOT Control (You can change this after you achieve system stability)
you may want to refer to the menu when you setting up this.
you can set your memory timing. at this stage i will leave it at default until you achieve system stability first.
To set them refer to your memory manufacturer data sheet.
On the voltage side. set CPU voltage to 1.5++V which is less than the Red option
set ram volatge to 1.79V ( i am using Corsiar 1600 2GBx2 which need at lease 1.8V) 1.79 is close
                                                                    enough.
This setting works for Kingston ram KVR1333 series
                                Set FSB Voltage to Auto
                                Set NB Voltage to 1.6++V
                                Set SB Voltage to 1.5++V
                                 leave the rest at AUTO
Disable the Spread Spectum      (if you enable this it will create random freez in your normal operation (but less often.)
    i am using Intel E8500
and Sapphire ATI 4870 1GB DDR5 for my video card.

  • Black Screen Problem after/durning installing MSI Driver CD (ATI 4780 1 GB)

    Hi,
I've recently purchased a your (MSI) Radeon 4870 1GB video card from Newegg. And I've installed it and I have the latest drivers (from windows) for it. But ever time I try and install the MSI CD on my computer the screen goes black (could possibly freeze but I don't know cause the screen is black) when installing it or upon the restart my computer. Do you have a solution for this problem? I've tried pretty much everything I can think of so far. I have SP2 Vista, I've tried to install it with and without anti-virus on also. I know this is the problem because when I go into safe mode and uninstall it my computer works fine again. I also built this computer a couple of weeks ago too FYI. On another note when the MSI CD is not installed the graphic are spectacular and very game that I've tried works at full setting.
    Spec:
    MSI R4870-MD1G Radeon HD 4870 1GB

Well if its working very well for you, then don't install from the CD.

  • Premiere is making corrupted H264 Mp4 files,  why?

I am exporting a series of [nested] sequences as H264 NTSC Mp4s.
If I export one sequence then it works fine and I can play it in Quicktime etc.
If I export this nested sequence of five timelines, then it produces a corrupted file that no program can use.  It complains that the file is unsupported or corrupt.
I have noticed at the end , Premiere is stuck on 99.9% progress for 18 minutes.  So I don't think it's finishing the file off properly.
    Any ideas?

Mr Bansaw, did you sort out your MP4 export problem? I have a single non-nested 10 minute sequence. Using a slightly modified AME HDTV 1080p 25 HQ preset to export to H.264 mp4 as follows:
PAL, 1920x1080, 25fps, progressive, VBR, 1 pass, Target 10Mbps, Max 25Mbps, AAC 160kbps, 48kHz. (I dropped the target bitrate from 35Mbps in the preset thinking that might be the problem, but it didn't make a difference).
The export seems to go fine ie without errors, but playing back the exported mp4 gives the occasional but noticeable stutter using VLC or WMP (ugh).
I will be projecting the video on a large screen so need the best quality.
    I am using PPro 5.0.3 on an Intel i7 920, 12GB RAM, 4 x 1TB 7200 HDD, ATI Radeo 4870 1GB, Windows 7 Ultimate SP1.
    Any suggestions will be welcome.

  • Advanced MB speaker p

I have been using this onboard chip for a while and recently started having problems with it. I am using my home theater surround sound reciever with my computer
While playing Quake 4 I noticed some choppy static during gameplay. In my device manager I found a problem with "Creative sound font synth". I had to uninstall and re install my drivers which fixed the alert in device manager, however, my sound is still choppy with static.
Through the audio controll pannel preferences menu, I ran the possitional speaker tests and discovered that the rear channel sound is comming out of all the speakers at the same time.
The test shows a graphic of a 5. speaker setup with an orbiting indicator as to which speaker should be playing the sound. When the indicator passes over my front left, center and front right speakers I have no sound.
When it passes over my rear speakers, the test sound playes on all speaker at the same time.
Has anyone seen this problem? How can I fix this?

Same here - see this thread http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=Vista&message.id=2795&query.id=67 5932#M2795
Frustrating since I have the Sigmatel drivers working fine (although this is on Vista x64).
I just wish I knew what the installer was validating. Unfortunately Im not an installshield expert, but there should be a way of getting an install log.
Perhaps someone from creative could oblige?

  • DKA790GX post problem

I have read through the forum to try and find an answer to my problem with no luck. I just purchased and received the DKA790GX along with a Phenom 3.0Ghz x4 and 8 Gigs of 1066 RAM (Kingston). I paid for half the ram, the cpu and mainboard to be tested and it came with a sheet with hand written info on it like someone had infact tested it. After installing the board and a new PSU (Silencer 750 Quad) and video card (MSI 4870 1Gb), I powered up. I didn't get any signal to my monitor (Viewsonic LCD). I powered down and tried to reset the cmos thinking it might have picked up something during the testing phase. I don't think the button is working properly because it doesn't appear to depress like the power reset and power button (on the mainboard). Could the button be stuck in the down or active position? If so, is there a way to bypass or disable the cmos button? One time the signal came through and I got to the CMOS, I configured the time (date was correct) and check other settings without making changes and saved and exit. Then it wouldn't pass signal to my monitor again.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks

The bios defaults to 800Mhz on the RAM, but I did try one stick. I tried to make sure the CMOS button was not pushed down. It went to the boot screen, said other than the F1 to setup etc it said; "CMOS setting wrong, Date/Time not set" So I went into the CMOS, set the time and date, made sure the RAM was set to 800Mhz (single stick in DIMM1 still) exit saving changes and when it reboots, no signal to monitor. It's like it continues to reset itself or something...
    Bios 7550 V1.2
Should I update to version 1.6 or is it another problem you think?
Scratch that, I can't get past having to re-input date and time. Can't boot to any device...

  • Best system for FCP 7?

    Hi,
I am in the position to upgrade some of my Mac components. I will be upfront at the outset and confess I have a Core i7 Hackintosh running at 3.8 GHz with a Radeon 4870 1Gb, and 12 GB of RAM. I have a 60GB SSD as a boot and app drive, plus a 1TB media drive. (This all runs perfectly.)
My question is; will FCP 7 benefit from a faster processor, or a better video card, like the Radeon HD 5870? Where would my money be best spent?
    Many thanks. Anil.

I am simply looking for other view points. I do not have a technical issue. Being a Mac user for nearly 20 years, and owning more Apple hardware than most it's not as if Cupertino hasn't received any money from me. FYI, I currently have 3 other "Macs" in my home and all my software is bought and paid for.  And correct me if I am wrong but weren't EULA's considered non binding by the Supreme Court?
    Hmmm..............
    Anil.

  • Rookie OC'er - Help appreciated

Hello, everyone! Let me say how incredibly excited I am to have found this forum - experts with the x58 series are tough to find!  First time poster, be gentle...
As I stated above, I'm a novice OCer in need of some love. I recently built an i7 920 rig, stats below. Last night, I fitted my new build with the Black Knight cooler and started working on a moderate OC.
The OC seems to have gone fine from a stability standpoint, though I'm baffled by the benchmark results. My 3dMark 06 score was a little over 16k before my OC. After the OC, I'm in the 12.5k range. I'm guessing I've set something incorrectly, though I'm not sure what that may be at this point...
On a side note, I'm a bit confused by the BIOS setting for the base clock. In understand that the base clock controls the speed of the processor and other components and that the default setting for a 920 is 133. As I raise the base clock up, my memory also ratchets up - to a point. Once I get to a certain point, the memory goes from a reasonable speed way back down in the 800's. (Adjusted DRAM frequency is what I'm talking about) Is there a default multiplier that's coming into play?
Confused in OC land, any help is appreciated! (As I'm sure you can see, I don't know what I don't know.  If there's something I need to get to help you help me, please let me know!)

The auto ratio will never go above what your modules are programmed for*.  If you wish to continue overclocking your memory, you will manually have to set the ratio.
However, I do not recommend that at all.  What you want to do, is find:
    1)  The maximum CPU clock speed, then
    2)  The maximum DRAM speed.
    3)  Write down the settings for each configuration.
Once you know what both are - calculate the highest performance by getting the highest DRAM frequency** and CPU clock speed possible.
    *  Since you're a n00b, you may not know about CPU-Z (Google is your friend) and that it can read SPD profiles (which are programmed to the JEDEC standard(s)).
**  The Nehalem platform has an integrated memory controller (often abbreviated to IMC).  The idea of the IMC is to maximum bandwidth with ulta-low latency.  So my recommendation (like for Athlon 64 platforms) is to get the lowest timings you can, and not the highest frequency.
    Best of luck!

  • Problem with P45 Platinum during POST

    Good day!
I have MSI P45 Platinum mainboard and from to time to time it freezes during POST with AMI bios POST code - 423C. This happens right after the message that "4096MB OK" and before the detection of SATA/IDE drives.  When this happens, the only way to make the system run is to turn off the power (pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del of Reset would result in the same error)  - after that the POST procedure finishes correctly and I don't experience any problems afterwards (system is rock-solid after POST completion).
So my question is - can anyone explain me what does this post code mean (D-Leds are not much of a help)? Is this a mobo problem or may be there is some kind of incompatibility with my hardware. I should mention also that I've tried all versions of Bios both official and beta without any success.
This problem does not trouble me that much (doesn't happen often), but still I would like to understand what may cause it.
    P.S. My system config - iC2D E8300/MSI P45 Platinum/4x1Gb DDR2-800 Geil Black Dragon (5-5-5-15)/MSI Radeon 4870 1Gb OC edition/HDD 250 Gb WD + 120Gb Seagate/SB Audigy 4/DVD-RW Asus 1814/PSU TT Toughpower 700w (w0105)
Thanx in advance and please excuse my poor English

    Thank you for the reply!

What is your current BIOS Version?
I've recently flashed the latest beta bios version - 1,5 beta 6... but it produces the same error as did the latest official bios v1.4

Does the same problem occur with only one memory module installed?
I don't know actually. But thanks for pointing this out  - I will test the system with one (and then with two) module(s). I've tested the modules with the memtest86+ software (the latest version, which supports P45 chipset) several times and it showed no errors. So the modules are OK and they worked without any problems with my previous mb (Gigabyte P35-DS3).

What do the POST-Status LEDs of the board tell you, when the system freezes at the described stage?
Well, I guess I don't fully understand what does the combination of LEDs tell during the freeze. I'll try to describe the combination -
    LED12 - OFF           LED13 - GREEN
    LED8 - RED             LED7 - OFF
    LED14 - OFF           LED10 - GREEN
    LED15 - RED           LED11 - OFF
In mobo's manual this diagnostic LEDs are grouped in 4 groups and the description of the group that most closely resembles my case is - "Testing base and Extended memory etc." But I'm not sure that I'm identifying the problem correctly, because of the LEDs that are OFF.

Are you experiencing any freeze and/or stability problems appart from the described problem?
No, as I said in my initial post, once it get past this stage everything is running smoothly - OS boots and all software, including the most demanding games or tests, are running OK.

  • MSI P67A-GD65 infinite boot/loop problem

installed everything into my case and go to boot into the UEFI and nothing !
i press the power switch, everything starts fine and the fans spin up and the LED's on the board are fine, waits 5 secs then it shuts itself off and tries the exact same process again. it keeps doing this until i cut the power !
i've checked the 24pin etc, KB & mouse r fine, 2 different sets off RAM in every slot, cleared CMOS (i think).
seems like a very common problem with this board after a bit of googling !!
    also tried

been sitting in the box unused for about 1.5 months. doubt that means anything tho.
put the stock cooler on securely, and still the same problem !
now tho, it wont start for about 3 secs after i press the power button

checked no molex connectors r touching the case metal either
    any suggestions?
