Choppy streaming video

Whenever I try to stream online video, such as from youtube, I get extremely choppy video content.  The audio usually works fine, but the video will lag a few seconds each frame and skip quite a bit.  I know that it is not my internet connection, as I have tried streaming the same video's on different computers on the same network (with no problem), as well as tried my macbook on different networks (with the same problem).  I have seen this similar issue in different threads with no clear-cut resolution (and I have tried many of the suggestions from those threads).
My issue started about three weeks ago completely randomly.  Since then, I have tried a few things to fix the issue.  I have tried different browsers (firefox, chrome, safari) as well as made sure my adobe flash was updated.  I have updated from Snow Leopard to Lion (was going to anyways, but hoping to fix this issue gave me the final push).  I have repaired my disk through Utilities and also run cleanups through Onyx.  My computer runs completely fine at all other times, but as soon as I try to stream video, the video becomes choppy and my computer becomes as slow as molasses.  Through activity monitor, I have noticed that while streaming (and shortly after) my computer goes to about 0% CPU Idle, with most of the CPU power going something called kernel task, which will run between 100-150 % CPU when the lagginess occurs.
Are there any suggestions at all?
My specs are:
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Mac OS X 10.7.2

Through activity monitor, I have noticed that while streaming (and shortly after) my computer goes to about 0% CPU Idle, with most of the CPU power going something called kernel task, which will run between 100-150 % CPU when the lagginess occurs.
Do you have Activity Monitor set to show"All Processes" instead of  its default of "My Processes?" If not, that leaves the "usual suspects" well under the radar. The "Show"option is in the toolbar of the AM window--this image is from 10.6--might be slightly different in Lion:
The other items re using AM to find a culprit are:
1) Use the computer normally for a while before checking AM's status. Items that tend to clog teh system may not show right after a restart.
2) Close all user applications so the computer is basically "at idle."
3) Highlight the "%CPU" column to bubble the worst offenders to the top.
I also like to quit any Dashboard widgets before this test to eliminate clutter; widgets that have to "phone home" can skew the results. To save having to restart the computer to turn off active widgets, get the widget "DashQuit":
http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/dashquit_berenguierduncan.html
Handy little rascal to have when troubleshooting. Once installed, the Dashquit widget is simply a button that turns off all open widgets.
If viewing YouTube via Safari, be aware that there are a lot of Safari extensions that might interfere. Try turning off extensions in Safari.
Let us know what you find.

Despite what browser I use, I am getting choppy streaming video - this has never been a problem.
Can not figure it out to save my life right now. I do have the latest software update and flash,
    any help?
    thanks in advance

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Delete All. Close the preference pane.
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Test.
If you use a FireWire audio interface, disconnect it and test again.

  • What causes choppy streaming video?

I have a problem with playing streaming video on my powerbook. The video is choppy but the sound is fine. What exactly causes that? I have a 6 Mbps DSL connection at the house, so I figured it was something internal with the Powerbook. Would this be a graphics card, RAM, or processor issue?? I'm not quite sure. Or is it just a matter of changing a setting?

    Hi BJ,
Not to state the obvious, but video requires significantly more bandwith than audio.
What app are you using to stream? What is its internet connection speed set at? What speed does the stream show it's streaming at?

  • EA6500 AC1750 - choppy streaming video

I have an excellent internet connection - 100Mbps dn and I put a new EA6500 router on it and got all my devices connecting and speedtests showing 40 - 60Mbps on 2.4 band, higher on 5ghz, couple different computers and operating systems throughout my house.
Invariably on all devices I would get choppy video, cnn, youtube, any streaming video would be start, stop, start, stop at random and for between 1 - 20 seconds and start and stop...
I switched over to an Asus RT-AC68U and I don't have this problem anymore.  So, now what do I do with my 45 day old Linksys?  I have been watching the forum and it seems unique, obviously I should have figured this out within 30 days and took it back but I figured surely there'll be a simple firmware update or something.
Anyone else seeing this?  Can't only be me?

Does the choppy connection occur on wired or wireless? Or both? Changing wireless channels might help resolved this. You can also adjust the MTU size. Try checking out these links:

  • Choppy streaming video FMS 3.5

    All,
I'm new to the streaming video world but I do have FMS 3.5 up and running and have encoded some wmv and mp4 videos to flv using adobe encoder CS4.  I followed the tutorials and have created the swf files in flash CS4 and the videos are streaming as expected.
The primary issue I am having is the videos tend to be choppy at times.  They pause, run slowly, audio pops and just overall; glitchy.  Typically at the beginning but some times throughout.  The test files at the FMS admin page stream fine without issue from the same server.  We have tested the site/streams from multiple providers all at cable modem speed or above.
We are running FMS 3.5 developer version and wish to purchase the full version but I really need to fix this issue to prove it's value.
As a bit of background we are running/testing FMS 3.5 from a server with the following specs:
    Redhat EL 4.6-32
SuperMicro X7DBU Intel Xeon QuadCore DualProc Sata [2Proc]
    Intel Xeon-Harpertown 5420-Quadcore [2.5GHz]
    OEM 4GB ECC FB-DIMM DDR2
Mainboard \ Onboard \ SATAII Controller
    (2) Western Digital WD Caviar RE 16 WD2500YS
    Uplink speed 10 (Mbps)
Bandwidth allotment 2000 GB(Virtual Private Rack)
Any input regarding how to test to identify the issue or past experiences with the same issue will be GREATLY APPRECIATED.  If there are any experienced individuals out there that could get us up to speed quickly we could discuss that offline.
    Thanks!
    Keith

    Hi Jay,
    Answers to your questions:
    1. What bitrate (audio+video) are your files encoded at?
FLV output file from original wmv: using On2 VP6, 638x480, framerate 29.97, stereo audio 128kbps, video bitrate encoding VBR, encoding pass one, 1,500kbps, undershoot 90, quality: good.
    2. When you experience this choppy playback, how many clients are consuming video from the server at that time?
1 or 2; we're only testing now and there is almost no load
    3. What is the bufferTime set to in your client side code?
I'm not sure what this is set to; I know we haven't adjusted it.  Where would I find this code?
    4. Is the server in a datcenter, or is it running on a residential or commercial ISP line?
server is in the Seattle Softlayer datacenter
Thanks so much for the help!

  • Choppy streaming video. help

    Hello,
I have a problem watching streaming video. When ever i try to watch a video online it is very choppy and then when i get to the exact half way point of the movie it just stops. It is very weird and i have no idea what to do.
    Thanks for all the help!

Are you watching the movie in a web browser (Safari, Firefox, Mozilla) or in a program (Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, Quicktime)?
    Is your software all up-to-date?
Is your Internet slow in general, or do you only have problems with online videos?

  • Airport express and choppy streaming video

I am running AX with a DHCP router from my service provider. Up until recently I watched streaming video (Adobe Flash Player) with no problems.  Now the video seems to stutter and have to rebuffer often and it seems to happen when Airport  is "Looking for new Networks".  This means the video stutters every 30 seconds or so.  Is there any way to avoid this?  My connection does not actually drop, it's just the streaming video that gets broken up.
So far I have tried to
    manually stick to one channel
reset the airport express to factory settings (which actually helped a bit; stutters from every 10 seconds to every 30 seconds)
    fiddled with interference robustness
    Any suggestions?
    AC

I'm not sure of the exact length restriction, but I have used a 100' cable with my AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to connect to the stereo and it worked just fine.

  • Choppy streaming video from CBS?

    Hello,
    Can someone help me.
I was watching a CBS stream last night and noticed that the picture was not smooth, but seemed to jump scenes.
    I have Verizon DSL.
Is this the fault of the IMAC monitor?
I do not know were to go to test the DSL speed and what speed it should be for smooth video.
Maybe it is a CBS problem.
also is eyetv good over slingbox? I have directv and a dvr and just want to use the imac as a tv also.
    Thanks
    Frank

The problem is most likely with the CBS server being overloaded or under capacity. I have the same problem with them and their news podcasts in iTunes are of very poor quality and available online rather erratically. It looks like Internet video at CBS is still just someone's hobby.

  • My computer will no longer stream videos? The videos are choppy and show static?

Hello! My macbook pro just recently stopped streaming videos from facebook, youtube, hulu, etc... The videos are choppy and show static. The sound play back is fine but the picture is definitely unclear. I was hoping that there was a simple solution to this as I have never had an issue with this computer before.
    Thanks,
    Charlotte

Thanks, Lawrence. I figured that was what I was going to have to do in the end. I have a few games with quite a few hours invested, and I worry that I'll lose the progress I have as they do not save to the cloud. I may have to bite the bullet, and just take the plunge to resolve this. I just want a way to easily transfer my "Home Computer" for my iPhone. My laptop is years old and in need of being replaced, and it's about time to upgrade my phone. These life events piling up are making me consider switching to a friendlier OS. I'm not using this as a threat. I just hope some apple high up will read this, and realize that we need alternatives. Life happens.
Thank you both Paul and Lawrence. I clicked "This helped me" not knowing it would remove the option to choose "This fixed my problem" too. For anyone else reading this thread. Using the guide provided has done both. It has helped me and given me a fix to my current problem. Lawrence has also provided me with the last bit of information I feel is missing from wjosten's guide. That syncing will completely erase all of your data and reinstall it in one fell swoop. It's a great fix. Even if it isn't the exact one I wanted. Thank you again!

  • All streaming video with my Firefox browser is choppy and constantly stutters and stops and starts. This does not happen with Internet Explorer. Help!!

Any streaming video that I view on Firefox stutters, is choppy and very irritating to try and watch. I opened up Internet Explorer and found that I don't have those issues. This occurs on YouTube, Facebook, and all other videos that I attempt to watch.

I've tried both things, but video still stutters.. Have also tried removing profile, and complete reinstall of firefox.
I'm on 24 Mbit cable and the only user atm. IE and Chrome seems to work without stuttering.
I've having this stuttering every ~5th second, like a small "1/4 sec buffering".

  • Choppy/Slow streamed videos on both Firefox and Chrome

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro that was recently turned off for two weeks while I was on vacation. When I turned it back on and tried to watch videos online (youtube, Netflix, streamed videos) the videos are choppy and slow to load. This was never a problem before turning of the computer for the two weeks. I have tried both Google Chrome and Firefox and the problem happens on both. When viewing the Activity Monitor while attempting to watch the videos the CPU usage is fine for the first 20 seconds or so and then Chrome or Firefox take on 80-90-over 100% of the CPU usage, a majority of the usage is from the system (in red) and the videos become untwatchable. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both browsers and have disbaled all the extensions. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Silverlight for Netflix and have uninstalled all unused versions of Adobe Flash player. There are no problems with video when I watch a DVD. Help! I want to watch videos again

having same problem since mac os x 10.6 upgrade, but was never issue prior... have tried everything i can think of, new flash players, reinstalling players, reboots of computer and router... to no avail. since this was never an issue for me prior to upgrading to Mac OS X (10.6.8), i believe its the os software.

  • My macbook has problems streaming video when using an external monitor

I have a MacBook from 2007.  I have a converter so that the MacBook can be connected to an external monitor, and have connected it to my TV.  This works fine, but if I am streaming videos and trying to watch on the TV, the streaming becomes very choppy, almost like the wireless connection is too slow.  If I unplug the computer from the TV, however, the streaming returns to normal.  I previously connected to a TV with an S-video connection and the problem did not seem as prominent.  Now I am connecting to a HD tv using an HDMI connection.
Any suggestions for how to alleviate this?  I haven't updated or upgraded the memory or RAM, possibly that would help?  Would the amount of files I am storing be causing the problem?  I currently have 50 GB available.
    Thanks for any help!
    Conor

Make sure your Mac is set to a resolution and frequency that your monitor supports.
The other possibility is that your graphics card is fried, but that seems unlikely since your computer is new. Before too long, you should make sure your graphics card is OK using the Apple Hardware Test, but I'm not sure how reliable that is because it claims that my partially broken graphics card is OK.

  • Streaming video brickwall.

Ok guys. I have searched high and low for a solid week and
looked through this whole site to find nothing on my issue. I am
currently trying to stream video from a webpage. Here is my setup:
    Server 2003
Flash Media Server 2 (on seperate server by itself)
    Apache 2.2
    PHP
I have added the MIME types to apache and have no firewalls
that are currently blocking any ports. Both servers are on the same
network within my domain. When I look at the page with the video on
it, there is nothing but a white space. Not even the controls that
are on the .swf file show up. I am making a connection to the FMS
because I am getting a connected on the Admin Console and it shows
a stream but shows the stream status idle and no bytes being
transferred. The file structure I have the flv in is
    /applications/videostreaming/myflvs/streams/***.flv with the
main.asc file in the videostreaming folder. I am using Dreamweaver
CS3 to add the stream to the page. Can't decide if it is because of
Dreamweaver or the FMS server not working correctly. I am
    completely stumped.

Got it. I can't stress this enough.....File structure, file
structure, file structure. Underneath the applications folder be
sure to create <any folder name>, then streams folder, then
    _definst_ folder.
My only issue now is that my video to the worldwideweb is
very choppy. I thought that if I have my FMS server on a different
box than my webserver, they could connect internally and still be
able to stream the video through the webserver out onto the www.
Apparently I need an outside ip for my FMS box as well. Am I
    incorrect in this assessment?

  • No streaming video

Can anybody tell me why I can’t watch streaming video on my droid x
With out getting a flag that says: (cannot play: low network streaming, try again)
I sell and install networked video security systems and it is a must that this works for clients. I have the correct app installed and I even try to connect using my home WIFI connection (road runner) and these clients don’t want to stand next to their computers at home to connect using their WIFI
    Please help me

Some websites are not formatted to be streamed to mobile devices. With these sites, the network connections do not have a chance to buffer the video, meaning, if you do get them to stream, it will be choppy at best; however, with 4G coverage, the streaming experience is vastly improved.
    Thanks,

  • Streaming Video Jerky

I'm having an issue where, if I'm watching streaming video on Hulu or Netflix, it gets really choppy when a Time Capsule backup begins. If I stop the backup, it goes back to normal. Has anyone figured out a way to fix this?

Simultaneously streaming video (especially HD video) and performing a data backup over the network consumes a lot of bandwidth. When either or both approach the maximum available, you get the poor streaming performance that you are experiencing. (Note: The backup performance is also affected.)
To attempt to alleviate this, you would have to ensure that your network has the best possible bandwidth to provide for these activities. Gigabit Ethernet connections would be the best with 802.11n wireless next.
Anything less than either of these would unfortunately mean that the simple answer is either to not to perform backups when streaming video or not to stream video while making backups.
