Chose wrong display settings, resulting in blue screen. Now what...

I just purchased a new Mac Mini and connected it to my LCD TV with an HDMI cable. Everything was working fine untill I switched the display setting from 1080i to 1080p (or vice versa, I'm not sure) which resulted in a blue screen. Now I can no longer see my desktop, how do I fix this ?
Nevermind. I just found the solution in another topic. Starting the Mac in safe mode solved my issue.

Hi,
I've also had the same problem you've mentioned and had it kind-of resolved.
I had the horizontal grey area on my screen which got worse over time. I had it sent away to Apple to be repaired and it came back pretty much the same as they couldn't find anything diagnostically wrong with it. I then went to the Genius bar and, fortunately, they recognised that there was a grey banding and replaced the LCD panel.
This did get rid of the grey banding, although brought a whole new set of problems.
Don't put up with the genius staff trying to baffle you or make you feel like you are being silly for complaining - the iMac is not a cheap machine and you have the right to make sure it is fit for purpose. A grey/uneven screen is not fit for purpose.
Ask them to replace your LCD panel and glass, but inspect it when you collect it to make sure it is an even brightness and colour. My replacements have been brighter on the left hand side than the rest of the screen or had a blue tint on the left or a yellow tint on the right. If you don't like it, don't accept it - as I have been told repeatedly by Applecare and the genius bar 'all the lcd panels are different you have to find one you like' i.e. put up with!
Eventually the cost of the replacement panels will mount up and they will offer a replacement. It has taken me almost a year to get my replacement. Just keep on at them until it is resolved.
Also, on your first pic there is a rectangular mark - this could be screen persistance and can be easily removed by using a white screensaver for a few hours. I found mine did it when i had the brightness on full (to compensate for the greyness!).
Hope this has helped, good luck!

  • Updating AVI Video Drivers results in blue screen of death

Creating a CD in Premiere 9 resulted in the program closing.  I was told to update video and sound drivers.  First I used the option in Device Manager, then I used DriverUpdate.  The computer now frequently gets the "blue screen of death," with reference to an infinite loop because of ATI2DVAG.  I want to download the drivers myself after deleting the current drivers.  The first field on the ATI site gives me the choice of desktop graphics, notebook graphics, TV tuner graphics, workstation graphics, integrated motherboard, embedded and MAC.  I chose DESKTOP.  I have Windows XP Professional and I also have Linux installed; my video card is ATI Radeon HD 4250.
In the second field I chose Radeon HD Series.  In the third field I chose Radeon HD 4xxx Series PCle.  In the fifth field I chose XP 32.
This brings me to a page which has three tabs: Catalyst Software Suite (with one download), Individual Downloads (five downloads) and Optional Downloads (five downloads).  I think the first is the one I want.  It comes with the warning that Framework 1.1 Service Pack from Microsoft, dated August 30, 2004, must be installed.  I have no reason to believe that my service packs are not up-to-date; I have service pack 3.
The Catalyst Software Suite, with the one download, is 11.6.  I think I now have 11.2 (I found this in the Catalyst Control Center from the icon on the bottom of my screen).  In my Device Manager it says: 8.821.0.0 released January 26, 2011, PCl busl, device5, function 0, internal version 8.821.
It looks as if the program I bought, DriverUpdate, did not install the latest release.  I think my best bet is to delete the current driver and install the Catalyst
Software Suite 11.6.  Is this the right thing to do?

I agree with John that those driver updater programs can cause more problems than they fix. I gave up on them a long time ago.
But if one of them were giving me the blue screen of death, I'd be very concerned! Blue screens, even on Windows computers, have rarely been seen since the days of Windows ME.
Rather, you'd be best to just manually go to Windows Update and ensure you have even the non-critical updates. That fixes about 99% of your computer. Though occasionally I go to the ATI or nVidia sites manually and get the latest drivers for my video card. And of course I go to Apple.com to ensure I have the latest version of Quicktime, which plays an important role in all PC-based computer editing.
Beyond that, I'd run iobit's excellent, free PC tune-up tool Advanced System Care. It's one of the few tune-up programs I do trust -- and it tunes up everything with just a click or two.

And if you're STILL having problems, please give us more information about your system and your project.
What operating system are you running? How fast is your processor and how much free, defragmented space is on your C drive?
What kind of camcorder is your video coming from? When you started your Premiere Elements project, which settings did you select?

    Hi @v95 ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue with your HP 15-r022tx Notebook and issues with the graphics card. I would do a system restore.
Once that has completed I would just go to the Device manager right click on the drivers for the graphics card and update the driver.

  • Mac mini stuck on wrong display settings

My setup is a Mac mini plugged via HDMI into a 32" 720p TV. In display settings, I accidentally selected a resolution lower than 720p, and my TV says 'format not supported.' Normally, I thought the computer would revert back to the original settings unless you press enter. This did not occur. When I plug into a 1080p TV, all is well and the Mac automatically switches resolutions to match the TV. But when I plug back into the 720p, it reverts back to the low resolution, which the tv does not support. Upon startup, the apple appears, but the screen goes blank before reaching the sign-in screen.

Mac mini HDMI is not supported by Philips hdtv.
It may also not be supported by other brands.
I am selling my Philips hdtv because of this.
You can use display port to vga output , but then there is no sound.
The Mac mini worked fine on 3 different Samsungs I tried it on.
I have read there is a workaround for the Philips issue, but my advice would be switch to Samsung.

  • Select- Color Range- Results in Blue Screen (PC)  (driver out of date)

I've been using the CS6 beta about two days.  While experimenting with color range I experienced two consecutive blue screen crashes.  The first time it happened,I was working with the color range selector and was replacing the selected areas with another color using the paint bucket.  About the third time I attempted this, my PC blue screened.  The second time, I opened a photo, went to Select>Color Range and got an immediate blue screen crash.
I then went back to CS5 and I've been playing with the same scenario with no apparent problems.
My PC is a store built computer.  It consists of an MSI 990-FXA GD80 motherboard, an AMD Phenom 1100t CPU, Asus GTX550 Ti graphics card and 8 gig of RAM.  It boots from a 60 gig SSD and my programs reside on a 500 gig hard drive.  The OS is Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.  CS6 is using the hard drive for its scratch disk and Photoshop is using 4339 mb of the 7232 mb of available RAM - I haven't changed that.  I'm running CS6 as administrator because the way it installed, it would only run in that fashion.
One disappointment during the installation was CS6 made no attempt to read my preferences from the CS5 install.  That may be covered in another post, I've not yet looked.
Please keep us informed as new betas are released, because I would like some time to work with this puppy before plunking down big bux for the upgrade.  As it is now, I'm going back to CS5.  I get mighty nervous when my super computer blue screens!

The GPU is often at root of issues like yours. I've had so many problems with Nvidia drivers for their gaming-oriented adapters (like yours) that I finally went with one of their workstation cards. I have a Quadro card with just enough RAM to make Photoshop happy. The workstation drivers are optimized for reliability, the consumer card drivers are optimized for gaming and that often means they're less stable and reliable with Photoshop.

  • Leopard upgrade results in blue screen

Finally going to make the jump from 10.3.9 to 10.5. Unfortunately, after running the Leopard disk all I can get is a blue screen.
Two pertinent points that may have some bearing on this dilemma:
    1. My onboard super drive isn't working so I'm using an external DVD drive.
    2. At the conclusion of attempting to install Leopard (and it said installation failed due to a poor disc), I selected the HD for restart.
I've tried restarting both with the Leopard disc in the external drive, and with the drive unattached. I've also tried holding down the C key.
I have a 320GB replacement drive that was going to be the second step of my upgrade.
Do I have to remove the onboard drive, place it in an external casing, put in my new 320 GB drive and then be able to access the data on the old HD?
Or is there (hopefully) a simpler solution?
    Thanks for any help.
    Merry Christmas.

if you get a blue screen with the mouse pointer, try booting in safe mode and restarting after it boots: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
or try a single user mode and run "fsck" utility:
to start in single user mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
if it boots and goes to a command line, type: fsck -y, and press enter, it'll check file integrity on the drive: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417

  • Firefox keeps freezing, resulting in blue screen errors

Whenever I use Firefox, it runs just fine for about 10 minutes, then it stops responding, and doesn't work for 30 seconds to a minute. Sometimes when it does this, I go into Task Manager to shut down Firefox, and when it shuts down, my computer screen glitches up, then it instantly blue screens.
This problem started happening to me right when I updated from version 3.6 to 5.0 a few months ago, and now it does this on every version of Firefox I try using. Infact, version 3.6 doesn't work at all now, that version freezes the moment the browser opens, and sometimes blue screens as well.
Does anyone know why Firefox continuously freezes and give blue screen errors?
Also, the only extension I have running is Adblock Plus. The browser still freezes when I have Adblock disabled.

Wait so you are saying that if you update the BIOS prior to imaging, then you do not get the error? As part of practice, I always update the BIOS on a new system before imaging.
For removing drivers, you can use DISM after mounting your image.
    DISM /IMAGE:c:\folder\mount /GET-DRIVERS
This will show you a list of drivers. If you have more drivers than the CMD console can show, you may want to send the output to the text file. Information format will show the original INF name, the version and the "new" file name as it exists
in the image. When removing a driver you need to specify this "new" name, for example oem53.inf.
    Dism /Image:C:\test\offline /Remove-Driver /Driver:OEM53.infThen unmount /commit changes.See here for documentation.

blue screen when switching gpu card. 10.8.2 mid-2010mbp. what to do?

Safe Boot by restarting your computer while holding down the "shift" key.  Safe booting disables all nonessential processes, often times allowing you to start up when you would otherwise crash.

I recently did the iOS 7.0.2 update, now I'm unable to purchase apps. "App could not be purchased at this time. Please try again later. ". I have tried a few of the suggestions and nothing has worked. Reset, change auto lock time on main screen, change language setting. Now what???

    This sorted it for me:
Backup your iPhone to iCloud (I believe backing up to iTunes will work too). Now go to "Settings --> General --> Reset --> Erase All Content and Settings" to completely restore your iPhone to factory settings. Assuming you've backed up to iCloud, you'll be asked when setting up your iPhone if you want to restore from an iCloud backup. Choose that option and once your iPhone has restored itself from your backup, this annoying problem will finally be gone! (was for me anyway).
To restore from an iTunes backup, connect your iPhone to your computer, load iTunes. Click the File menu and select Devices > Restore from Back up.

    Hi jinjoe,
I am sorry for the issues you are experiencing with your upgrade. How is this memory installed? Is it just one module or did you purchase two? Did you install it with any exisitng RAM? If you have two modules have you tried installing one module at a time? This would help us determine if the issue is with one defective memory module or both causing the issue.
