Chracteristic representing the product in POS for DP BOMs

Hi,
We have implemented APO DP and do not use DP BOMs yet.
There are plans to start using it.
When I check the 'relevant for DP bom' field in the POS and replace 9AMATNR by the characteristic we currently use for the product, I cannot save. An error message is generated stating that the characteristic representing the product should have 40 positions and should use conversion routine 'PRODU'.
We are currently working with DP and use less than 40 characters for the product. Changing this has a huge impact. Does someone know how to bypass mentioned restrictions so that we can use our own (existing) characteristic for product (18 characters)?
Thanks for your answer.

PS: I know the concept of DP BOMs

Hi All,
The issue is resolved.
The information comes from the SNP Master data, i.e. from the description of the product maintained in /sapapo/mat1.
The 9AMATNR characteristics is a 40 Char object. If the CVCs are loaded with less than 40 Char, the description of the product will not come along with the product ID.
We had the issue where the CVCs were loaded with less than 40 Char for 9AMATNR and because of that the system was not reading the product description.
