Chrome always starts running

I have OS X Mavericks on a Mac Mini. Although exiting all Apps before shutting down the system, or putting it in SLEEP, upon restart CHROME always starts running although I've not tried to start it.  How can I stop CHROME from starting automatically?

Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the Login Items tab. Select the Chrome entry, then click on the Delete [-] button.

  • PB doesn't always start up/won't run on charged battery

I have a 15" aluminum PowerBook that I've slowly been bringing back to life after it had a full mug of coffee dumped into it. I cleaned everything out and it's working again, for the most part. However, there are a couple of unresolved problems. The biggest is the computer doesn't always start up. I've also noticed that it won't run on the battery alone, even though the battery is fully charged. When unplugging the computer, the screen goes dark but the computer is still making noise -- it's running to some extent. Any pointers on how to get things running again properly would be greatly appreciated.

If you're able to charge the battery while it's in the computer, and pushing the button on the back of the battery shows all the LEDs lighting up, that suggests that you have a logic board problem. There are only 4 components to the charging circuit: power adapter, DC-in card, battery, and logic board. If what you described is that you can hook the power adapter up and charge the battery completely in the computer, the only component left is the logic board.
While there aren't any tests I've found to test the charging circuit, have you run the Apple hardware test or either of the TechTool programs to test the system? Insert your original OS X disk that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot holding the option key down, choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. Does that give you any errors?

  • URGENT!pls hlpDAC Full Load always in 'Running' status at a particular task

    Hi Friends,
I started a full load yesterday. There are totally 257 tasks. The load went fine without issues till 248th task. But while executing 249th task(Load into Activity Fact),it is always in 'Running' status and is not getting completed even after executing for 2 hours. I checked in the informatica workflow monitor and found that the workflow is in 'running' state and is not getting completed. When right-clicked the session and selected run properties,I can see that 0 rows are inserted into the target table. So I manually tried to stop the workflow.Even after that the task is always in 'Stopping' status and is not getting stopped. Then I manually aborted the workflow.
Below is the session log file.Could you please check and let me know.
    Regards,
    Vijay

    Hi Friends,
We executed a Full-Load again on Saturday i.e 23rd July 2011.This time we allowed the task 'Load into Activity Fact_CUSTOM' to execute without stopping it manully like we did in the previous data load.It got executed for 3 hours and 45 minutes and then 'Failed' giving the following error ORA-01652(unable to extend temp segment by string in tablespace string). This task got executed successfully in our dev environment.Below is what we found in the sessio .log file and help us resolve this issue. Please revert back as soon as possible as we have this issue in our prod environment.

  • Please I can not get a .jar file to run on XP SP3 start/run/cmd/

I can not get a .jar file to run on XP SP3 start/run/cmd/
Please help if can figure this out. I'm convinced it is a Windows XP SP3 problem from searching on google and seeing other ppl on XP SP3 with same problem (but no working solution for myself). I'll try to be complete-listing all I've done.
I had installed: Java SE Runtime Environment v6u14 for Windows Multi-language
I had checked here it was working properly: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
I'm trying to run this jar file (soht-client-0.6.2.jar):
    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/telnetoverhttp/soht-java-client-0.6.2.zip?download
http://www.ericdaugherty.com/dev/soht/javaclient.html < this is the information for the program.
(yes the file can be executed and should open the program's window
I wanted to post screenshot of it but friend that it's working for isn't here)
_(Please find log of all cmds I did in this post here: http://pastebin.com/f792983df )_
_I have extracted +'all' the files to: C:\062\+_ (I have tried using other directories, same problem)
    ++I then start/open/run/cmd+
    then I: cd C:\062\+
then I try various commands - all+ of these do absolutely nothing- meaning no errors, no reply, no window opens, nothing except enters that directoy again:
    java -jar soht-client-0.6.2.jar
    java -jar -client soht-client-0.6.2.jar
    java -client -jar soht-client-0.6.2.jar
    java -jar soht-client-0.6.2.jar soht.properties
    soht-client-0.6.2.jar
So I try this cmd: java soht-client-0.6.2.jar
    Reply:
    C:\062>java soht-client-0.6.2.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: soht-client-0/6/2/jar

    at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal(Unknown Source)
Could not find the main class: soht-client-0.6.2.jar. Program will exit.
    I try this cmd:
    java -jar soht-client-0.6.2.jar -client
    Reply:
    C:\062>java -jar soht-client-0.6.2.jar -client
Unable to load configuration file: -client - java.io.FileNotFoundException: -cli
ent (The system cannot find the file specified)
    SOHT Java Client
The SOHT Java Client requires a properties file. Either start
the application in the same directory as the soht.properties
file, or specify the file name on the command line:
    java -jar soht-cleint-<version>.jar c:\soht.properties
So then I do these cmds which produce the exact same error/reply just above; Unable to load..:
    j_ava -jar soht-client-0.6.2.jar -client soht.properties_
    java -jar soht-client-0.6.2.jar -client C:\062\soht.properties
So then I copy soht.properties to C root and do:
java -jar soht-client-0.6.2.jar -client C:\soht.properties <same error as above
Then from other information I have read I right click on the .jar file, select open with Always open with:
    _"C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe"_
    Try again.. same problem.
    Then I do cmd:
    _"C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -jar "C:\062\soht-client-0.6.2.jar"_
does nothing, retry the other commands same thing (either nothing or those same replies)
Then I read (http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5384879) someone had the same problem as I and they solved it by uninstalling all Java/reboot/ then install JDK 6 Update 14 with NetBeans 6.5.1 start NetBeans and then it worked for them.
So I unistalled all Java, rebooted and gave the cmd another try (before re-installing), now a new error, of course:
    C:\062>java -jar soht-client-0.6.2.jar
'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
Then I install  Java SE and NetBeans Cobundle (JDK 6u14 and NB 6.5.1) Final Release/ reboot/ open Netbeans/
go to test java page; all is good, run cmds again -and still nothing..
    C:\062>java -version
    java version "1.6.0_14"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode, sharing)
    I reassociate program with: C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.007\bin\javaw.exe_
    same thing.. nothing
Thank you very much for your time :D_
PS. My computer has been newly reformatted so needing another reformat I'm sure is not the solution.

Thank you very much for your replies Taggert_77 & swmtgoet_x :D
Taggert77_: I have never used NetBeans. I only installed it in the bundle as I had read on another post that somehow installing the bundle magically helped another user with the same problem (he didn't know why it worked after that either).
Before XP SP3 I was able to execute .jar file through cmd prompt. Now I am not.
This file is executable, grab it and you will see. Here is a screen shot (program in front is FlashFXP, behind is the cmd prompt and what should happen):http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/53273b4ddf.jpg
swmtgoetx_: I only did the other cmd's to try to make it spit out something, anything lol :D
The proper cmd is simply: java -jar soht-client-0.6.2.jar
I did give your cmd a try, and it produced nothing :( (just like the other correct cmds)
    java -client -jar soht-client-0.6.2.jar soht.properties
    Thank you again...the mystery remains
PS. If you do a search for this you'll find an amazing amount of XP SP3 users with the same problem and no solution posted that I could find except one chap that did the unistall install order that I did above).

  • My Macbook Pro started running really slow

This week my Macbook Pro started running super slow, taking ages to open programs and giving me the color wheel alllll the time. I've never had problems like this before! I'm not running many applications or doing anything unusual but it's just running extra slow. Once or twice it has also totally gone to sleep while I was in the middle of using it, and I had to wake it back up. It has also been getting really hot and the battery life seems worse...! This is all new, I'm using my computer just as I always have but it suddenly has issues.
The only thing it has been doing for a while is sometimes the screen will go blue - this either corrects itself within a few seconds or if I close my Macbook and then reopen it, the screen is back to normal. This is very rare though and I don't know if it's related to the slowness problem.
What can I do to fix this??

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault. The "etrecheck" output is irrelevant.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • My 2010 MacBook Pro started running slow a few days ago and is getting worse. I have run a report with EtreCheck that I can post.  Can someone please help me figure out what's wrong and how to fix it.  Thank you.

Problem started after I unintentionally downloaded some adware 4 days ago. After lots of aggressive ads slowed down my browser I downloaded and ran AdwareMedic which seemed to do the job and browser was back to normal.  Then, possibly a coincidence, everything on the computer started running slower.  I've backed up everything and have run a EtreCheck report.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • HT201250 once time machine starts running, it never stops. what could cause this?

Using WD, My Passport for Mac, 2TB with Time-Machine. Updated software on MacBook, now once time machine starts running an update it does not stop untill  cancel it!

    1. The first time takes very long always, after that it will only do changes very hour and you will not notice it. The drive must be correctly formatted, Guid Partition Table, Mac Os Extended (journaled).
    2. If you installed any of the 'smart' software that came with the disk (specifically with the WD disk), you have to uninstall it completely immediately, because it will cause data loss and speed at the minimum: in macs you do not not need such additional software, just make sure that the disk is correctly formatted. If you had such software installed, and now uninstalled, you better reformat the drive, restart the mac, and then start all over again with TM.

  • [SOLVED] XFCE always starting with the US keyboard

    Hi guys.
Recently I came back to XFCE and I have one problem: it always starts with the keymap set to US. I have to manually change it to PL (which I need) with setxkbmap. Also, when I'm using the panel plugin I cannot choose any keymaps other than the currently selected.
What can I do about it?
Last edited by JeremyTheWicked (2008-10-12 21:49:56)

The way I deal with the multimedia keys is that
    1) figure out what keycodes they generate (run 'xev' and do some presses)
    2) assign the correct name to them via xmodmap
maybe 3) use xbindkeys to let them do what they should do (but this is probably not necessary, DEs like xfce should be able to act just based on having a correct name assigned to the keypresses)
    the xmodmap stuff:
    ~/.xmodmaprc wrote:keycode 144 = XF86AudioPrev
    keycode 153 = XF86AudioNext
    keycode 162 = XF86AudioPlay
    keycode 164 = XF86AudioStop
and then have 'xmodmap ~/.xmodmaprc' executed at X start (again, some DEs do this automatically, some don't)
But! maybe figuring out the correct option for your keyboard might render all of the above steps unnecessary. I don't know a good place to look for the options, except closely inspecting the contents of /usr/share/X11/xkb - there's a lot of stuff, but that's for instance where I found out the possible variants for the us keyboard.

  • Trajectory Generator always starts at 0, never stops

I am trying to implement a simple single axis control based on the example shipped with Softmotion 2.2. Everything is running on a cFP and I am using an absolute wire draw encoder, outputting xx.xxx inch values. My main problem at this point is the trajectory generator. Rather than going to the target position from a current position, it always starts at zero and climbs (until manually stopped). This is after I essentially got rid of the position error limit, otherwise it would just stop immediately if the encoder was not at zero.
    Any suggestions?

I understand the reset issue, but was under the impression that SoftMotion worked with absolute encoders as well (such that the encoder output would not have to be reset to zero for the Traj. Gen. to work). I have tried running with and without a reset on initialization of the Main vi with no affect.
Attached is a copy of the VIs - I tried to copy all of the subVIs that I was modifying, so it's a bit of a mess compared to the original. everything is collected in the Project.

  • Lion - Safari and Address Book always start up when I boot

Even after reinstalling lion 10.7.4, whenever I boot up, Safari and address book always start up. When I uncheck the restore windows feature at shutdown or restart, when I reboot, up they come.
Also, when I open Mail and create a new email, as soon as i enter a partial email address, it crashes. When i look at the latest draft in my Gmail draft box, it's from 2-27-2012 although i have written many emails and drafts since then, as my Snow Leopard laptop will attest.
Here's the report from my latest email crash.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Is there another account you can log into on your MacBook to see if Address Book will launch there? If not, you can create one using System Preferences (under the Apple menu) Users & Groups. Click the lock and authenticate if it is locked, then click the + button and add another account. Log out of your current account and log in to the new one. Your desktop will probably look different, do not be alarmed by this. Try to launch Address Book here.
Let us know what happens, we'll keep helping you.
    Best of luck.

  • My iMac suddenly started running extremely slowly.  Any ideas as to what might be causing it?

My iMac has always run like a champ but it suddenly started running very slowly today.  I haven't done anything different.  I'm not running all kinds of programs.  I've restarted several times and it takes about 20 minutes to start up.  The little color wheel starts spinning every time I start to do anything and each task takes 10-20 minutes to complete.  I can't do much in the way of self-diagnosis as it takes too long to do anything.  I'm writing this from another computer.  Any ideas of things to try before I bring it in for repairs?
    Thanks.

In general you should always have at least  15 - 20% of your hardd rive Free
No, this is an urban legend; you don't need 15-20% free. You should try to maintain around 30GB free, no matter what the size of your drive--and that's just a very rough ballpark; you may need much less or more,  depending on how you use your computer. But you won't notice slowdowns of this order until you get really close to the edge, much lower than 30GB.
There are two possible causes for this. One, your drive is failing and you should be sure you have all your data backed up on an external before it dies completely. To check your drive get the free demo of SMART Utility. (But don't even think about doing this until you have a backup in place. That's much more important.)
    http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php
The other is you may have exhausted all your available RAM and the the system is writing to the hard disk instead because nothing is left. The drive may be "thrashing" trying to accomplish this. This will make things very slow and eventually may just freeze everything up.
Open Activity Monitor in Utilities, go to the System Memory tab. How much free memory is showing? What do you see for Page ins, Page outs and Swap used?

  • HT2529 This morning Voice Over started running on my computer, but when I go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES/INTERNATIONAL ACCESS the Voice Over option is off, so I turned it on and then off, but it's still on.  What else can I do to make it stop?

This morning Voice Over started running on my computer when I turned it on.  I did not turn Voice Over.  Could I have hit a combination of keys on the keyboard that accidentally turned it on?  When I went to System Preferences and chose Internation Access it showed that Voice Over was not even on.  I turned it on and turned it off to reset it, and it is still running.  How is this possible, and how to I get rid of it?
    Trumpeter

I went to System Preferences, Universal Access, and then VoiceOver for the fiftieth time after you said to check VoiceOver Utility to see if I saw anything odd.  On The VoiceOver screen it was actually saying that VoiceOver was on.  All day the VoiceOver option was off, and the computer talked to me everytime I logged in.  I tried turning it on and off and it still talked to me.  Now the VoiceOver option was on, so I turned it off again. Weird! I had tried several combinations of keys again and again as the tech instructed me to do, but we couldn't turn it off, but I have to admit that after my phone went dead I tried everything I could imagine; so maybe in trying to turn the talking off I turned the VoiceOver Option on. Anyway, somewhere along the way it quite talking to me.
Let me ask you a couple of questions.  When I clicked on VoiceOver Utility, after turning VoiceOver off, the screen message says: Speak the following greeting after login:  Welcome to Mac OSX.  VoiceOver is running. I was assuming that it meant VoiceOver was running.  That is what it is saying right now.   It's not talking to me anymore, but the screen says this whether the VoiceOver icon is on or off.  What is this all about.  Is it telling me that Voice Over is still running when I see this, or what?  After all, even when the OFF icon was chosen the computer still spoke to me when I hit each key upon logging in.  After you read the rest of this you will understand why I am asking if it is still running even though it's not talking to me.
There is a box that appears and says "Portable Preferences for (Jane Doe) have been detected on (JaneDoe).  Would you like to use them?    Always Use   /  No  /   Yes      What does that mean?
Last but not least. I was looking around and was clicking on Application, Documents, etc.  When I clicked on Documents, only four things came up even though there are tons of documents on my computer.  All four of them have to do with VoiceOver, and they were labeled as documents.  One of the documents had this in it:
    SCRConfiguration Cursor Tracking KBToVO
    SCRConfiguration Cursor Tracking VOToTXT
    SCRConfiguration Cursor Tracking VOToKB
I'm not a computer genius, so maybe I just don't know what I'm looking at.  Is it normal for something like this to be found under documents?  All of these were dated today, and the problems started today. I haven't gone to bed yet, so even though it's after midnight it's still the same day to me.  Anyway, none of the documents were dated before this problem started.  On top of that, I have tons of documents on my computer, but when I clicked on Documents, those four are the only ones that showed up.  After trying to decipher the programming language on them, I went to click on Applications and hit Documents again, and all the documents came up.  I scanned the list and didn't see them, but there are so many documents on here that I haven't had time to slowly go over them to see if I missed those four documents somehow. Since then I haven't been able to get just those four to appear by themselves again.
Now, is it possible that I still have a hacker and he knows through a key logger everything I am communicating to you and the Apple Store,  Maybe he did made a mistake and accidentally caused this problem, and through logging every key I have typed he has learned about his mistake and fixed it.  He could still be key logging me now without me knowing it; or maybe he removed the keylogger, because he know I'm taking it in to the Apple Store and can tell them now exactly what to look for.
It is either a hacker, or I have a very vivid imagination.  What do you think?

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.

If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Macbook Pro just started running insanely slow

    Hello there,
From my research I can't figure out why my mac all of a sudden started running so slow. I've looked at the CPU, memory, startup and a lot of other suggestions I read here and am at a lost.
I bought a external  back up drive and it was going very slow too, I forgot to keep my machine plugged in overnight and it  turned off so the backup didn't complete.
Do I just restart the external backup turning the Time Machine on?
I did a test on EtreCheck and I only saw one thing that I think could be a problem but I really have no clue here.

    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • My Mac book pro has all the sudden started running slow and freezing up all the time , any ideas why or what to do

    Hello ,
I am not very good with tech things , I have a Mac Book Pro and have had it for almost two years with no problems. Now for the past week or so it has started running extremely slow and freezing up all the time. I am not really sure what is going on but is there any advice on something to do or any idea what could be wrong.

My MacBook Pro is running very slow.
