Chromebook question

How do I install the Adobe Reader plug-in on my Chromebook?
It is not already in my plug-ins to enable.
The default Adobe Reader download page on Adobe.com does not include the option of downloading for Chrome OS.
Thanks.

Yes, it is correct.
Google have made Chrome, a browser for these systems: Windows, Mac OS, Android, iOS, and Linux.
And Google have made ChromeOS, a system itself, for ChromeBooks.
The page is about installing Adobe Reader for Chrome (on Windows, as it says at the top), not ChromeOS.
The names are confusingly similar, but it is well to understand the difference.

My HP, purchased in June 2012, died on Saturday.  I was working in recently installed Photoshop, walked away from my computer to answer the phone and when I came back the screen was blank.  When I turned it on, I got a Windows Error Recovery message.  The computer was locked and wouldn't let me move the arrow keys up or down and hitting f8 didn't do anything.
I'm not happy with HP.  Any suggestions?

  • Pegatron IPMTB-TK motherboard version 1.04 and BIOS question?

    Hi,
    I bought a refurbished HP Pavilion Elite m9650f, Win 7 on 04-21-2010
and it too has suffered from the crashes, freezes and multiple BSOD
that many people have been complaining about.  I have the Pegatron
    IPMTB-TK TRUCKEE version 1.04 motherboard.
    HP calls it TRUCKEE-UL8E.
Am I looking to replace it with version 1.04 E01 or version 1.05E?
(With much reading on the web about my m9650f problems,
I finally have it maybe 90% stable after replacing the hard drive,
upgrading to BIOS ver 5.29 and replacing all the RAM.)
I know there is a class action suit including the m9650f pending.
    http://www.hpelitedesktopsettlement.com/
Will I be able to request a repair for my HP computer?
When will HP let people request a repair?
Also, I currently have BIOS ver. 5.29 and notice that there is a ver. 6.10
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-88852-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en
BIOS ver 6.10 improves system support for Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition processors which is what ver 5.29 says it does.
BIOS ver 6.10 also installs HP Vision Diagnostic tool which I don't know anything about.
I don't plan on installing an Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition processor.
Should I upgrade to BIOS ver 6.10 or just leave well enough alone?
    Thank you for your time.

    Hi Dashby,
My motherboard is 1.04E01 and it has been very stable.   I have not heard or seen anyone with 1.05.
You can put PCI cards other than x16 in the PCI-E x16 slot such as x1 or x4 cards.
Typically what happens if another video were to be install in the second PCI-E x16 is the total 16 lanes of bandwidth would be split between the two slots.  You can't run SLI or CrossFire on the truckee motherboard so in my opinion a second video card is a waste.  Just use a BIG video card if needed.
You can use PC Wizard and look under Mainboard PCI Express to gain information about the PCI-E slots and the speed that they are running when a card is installed.
The Asus U3S6 expansion card is an interesting piece of technology. hmmmm   I wonder if the bios would support a SATA 3 boot device?

  • Soon-to-be Macbook Pro convert asks questions

    Hi there!
I have had Windows PCs in the past and i want some change. i want to do things more quicker & simplier. I have been researching for the past week or so a comparison on Apple Macs and the latest crop of Windows 7 laptops and i wanted to ask questions so i can convince myself if a Mac (in particular the Macbook Pro) is the one for me:
    1. Price
The Cheapest Macbook Pro is down for £999. with the same (or less) of the price for a Windows 7 laptop i can have a high-end laptop with a little more specs inside (disregarding wether you "need" the specs or not). Why buy a Mac?
    2. Camera
Does the FacetimeHD Camera allow for 3rd-party chat like Skype, Facebook video chat, Google talk or Yahoo Messenger?
    3. Bluetooth
With Bluetooth on-board will it allow sending or receiving files from a non-Apple device? and/or will it allow 3rd-party peripherals such as webcam, keyboard, mice or speakers to work (i.e. compatibility)?
    4. DLNA
The Macbook Pro doesn't seem to have DLNA on-board. what if i want to "throw" files to my TV via my PS3 will i need another Apple peripheral to do that?
    5. microSD card slot
Is the microSD card slot universal and is compatible with most if not all types?
    6. Keypad
It does say somthing as "multitouch". would that mean pinch-to-zoom photos/videos/websites? swiping as well?
    7. Software & Programmes
I like my Windows 7 laptop as i can download almost any WIndows-compatible softwares & programmes. things such as a browser (Firefox & Chrome), music management (3rd-party alternative to iTunes), anti-virus, etc. Will the Macbook Pro "in general" allow us to do that as well?
    8. Web Apps
Much i am not familiar with these web apps. All i know is they are just like apps on a smartphone. The Google Chromebook was built for the web and has loads of web apps on its Market. does Apple have a similar system? can i download Apple and also Google web apps on the MBPro?
    9. USB ports
The MBPro has USB ports but can i insert any 3rd-party external/portable hard drive in order to view files such as JPEG photos, MP3 files or AVI movies?
Do i need to download a 1st-party or 3rd-party software in order to view/play those said files?
    10. Uploading & Editing photos
Say i have a 32GB microSD card with photos or videos. i want to upload them to Facebook or Flicker or videos onto Youtube. i can do that on the Macbook Pro can i? do i need a 1st-party or 3rd-party software to do that?
I'm also into basic editing of photos like with Picassa.  is there a similar/equivalent product to edit a photo? (like cropping, sharpness, background effects, etc.) and after editing the photo can i easily save it on my Mac and attach as an email?
    11. Hard Drive
I read its an SSD-type. but can i easily partition the hard drive into equal or uneven parts? do i need a 1st-party or 3rd-pary software in order to do that? (the reason being so to organise my files properly and avoid "errors" in them)
    12. Fan Noise
I have a 1-year old HP Windows 7 laptop and after watching a movie for an hour the fan starts to become noisy and heats up after 2 hours. do i need to worry about fan noise or overheating with the MB Pro? does it have a fan or an exhaust?
    13. Warranty & Buying
What is the standard local UK/EU warranty and what does it cover? do i have a choice of an "extended" warranty? or can i just bring in my MB Pro for repairs only on an Apple store or a PC World/Currys store? would it be free if its in an Apple store?
What are the advantages of buying one at an Apple store? more perks/benefits/deals,etc.?
    14. Wallpapers
can i change the wallpaper easily on a MB Pro like in a Windows 7 laptop?
    15. Startup & Shutdown
I have heard both processes are quick and fast but is it just a one-touch/one-button thing? (unlike with Windows 7 you have to go to the symbol then...you know what i mean)
    16. Speakers & 3.5mm jack
Does a MB Pro have dual stereo speakers? do they have any other effects (or say equalizers) i can change or tweal to make it more louder or more surround in sound? can i connect any standard speakers on the standard 3.5mm headphione jack?
    17. Games
Now, lets face it. most games are on the home consoles then second is for the PC. i want to ask first: can i download games on iTunes and be able to play them on my MB Pro? (e.g. an iPad game) and say if i have  a Google account can i (in theory) download games off the Android Market to play on my MB Pro?
    18. Browsers
Safari might be better & faster than IE but i like mine Chrome. can i download ANY 3rd-party browsers (like Chrome or Firefox) on the MC Pro?
    19. Antivirus
    No need? and why?
    20. OS
Does the MB Pro come with the latest OS X and with back-up disc on the box?
    21. Updates
Like any PC or smartphone how often does Apple release updates for its Macbook range? and how do i update mine?
    That is all for now.

well..it is a long list but I will answer as many as I can.

I know for sure it works with Skype, not sure about the others as I do not use them.
    5. microSD card slot
Is the microSD card slot universal and is compatible with most if not all types?
Cards that conform to the SD 1.x, 2.x, and 3.x standards should work. The SD card slot can use cards that are Standard SD (Secure Digital) 4 MB to 2 GB, SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) 4 GB to 32 GB, and SDXC  (Secure Digital Extended Capacity) 4G B to 2 TB. MMC can also be used in this slot. MiniSD, MicroSD, and higher density formats like MiniSDHC and MicroSDHC can also work with the use of "passive" adapters that conform to the width and thickness specifications listed above.

    6. Keypad
It does say somthing as "multitouch". would that mean pinch-to-zoom photos/videos/websites? swiping as well?
    Yes. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3211

There are Mac compatible versions of Firefox and Chrome (I use both).  You don't need anti virus on a mac unless you also have Windows installed on a seperate partition.
    8. Web Apps
Much i am not familiar with these web apps. All i know is they are just like apps on a smartphone. The Google Chromebook was built for the web and has loads of web apps on its Market. does Apple have a similar system? can i download Apple and also Google web apps on the MBPro?
Apple has the App store where you can access free and paid apps.  I have used Google Chrome Apps on the Chrome homepage (anrgy birds).
    10. Uploading & Editing photos
Say i have a 32GB microSD card with photos or videos. i want to upload them to Facebook or Flicker or videos onto Youtube. i can do that on the Macbook Pro can i? do i need a 1st-party or 3rd-party software to do that?

Yes, Macs have a built in photo software that will do this.  It is called iPhoto
    11. Hard Drive
I read its an SSD-type. but can i easily partition the hard drive into equal or uneven parts? do i need a 1st-party or 3rd-pary software in order to do that? (the reason being so to organise my files properly and avoid "errors" in them)
Yes you can partition you hard drive as you like without any additional software
    12. Fan Noise
I have a 1-year old HP Windows 7 laptop and after watching a movie for an hour the fan starts to become noisy and heats up after 2 hours. do i need to worry about fan noise or overheating with the MB Pro? does it have a fan or an exhaust?
MacBooks tend to run hot when doing intense things, such as watching movies or using demanding programs.  The 13" models have 1 fan and the 15" and 17" models have 2 fans.
    14. Wallpapers
can i change the wallpaper easily on a MB Pro like in a Windows 7 laptop?
    Yes.
    15. Startup & Shutdown
I have heard both processes are quick and fast but is it just a one-touch/one-button thing? (unlike with Windows 7 you have to go to the symbol then...you know what i mean)
You can shut down the mac in a similar manner like on a PC or use a keyboard shortcut.
Every new mac comes with a 1 year hardware warranty and 90 days of phone support.  You can purchase an extended warranty which will provide a total of 3 years of hardware warranty and phone support.  It is called AppleCare.  Here is what it covers: http://images.apple.com/legal/warranty/docs/cpuwarranty.pdf
    16. Speakers & 3.5mm jack
Does a MB Pro have dual stereo speakers? do they have any other effects (or say equalizers) i can change or tweal to make it more louder or more surround in sound? can i connect any standard speakers on the standard 3.5mm headphione jack?
In my opinion, the speakers on the 13" MacBook Pro are sub par.  I can't say how they are on the other models.  They only have basic adjustments for the internal speakers.  You should be able to hook up any external speakers that fit in the jack.
You can download games from the App store and play them as long as your mac meets the games requirements.  For gaming, I would suggest a 15" or 17" model as they have 2 graphics cards, the 13" only has 1 graphics card.  Apps for iPads can not be played on mac computers, they are specific for iDevices or Macs. Not sure about the Android question.
    18. Browsers
Safari might be better & faster than IE but i like mine Chrome. can i download ANY 3rd-party browsers (like Chrome or Firefox) on the MC Pro?
I have Safari, Firefox, Opera, and Chrome on my mac.  Internet Explorer stopped support for macs in 2005.
    19. Antivirus
    No need? and why?
    Read this: http://www.reedcorner.net/guides/macvirus/
    20. OS
Does the MB Pro come with the latest OS X and with back-up disc on the box?
No.  It has a built in recovery partition.  Read this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
    21. Updates
Like any PC or smartphone how often does Apple release updates for its Macbook range? and how do i update mine?
Yes, Macs have "software update". Updates are released as Apple determines they are necessary. You can chose to have it look for software updates in certain intervals or you can easily do it manually.

  • My Chromebook will not let me install software via google play; so how do I install to a Chromebook?

The instructions for installing my printer software says I need to do so via Google Play. However this does not work on a Chromebook, which is what I have. Chromebook tech support says I cannot download apps from google play, only google chrome store. However, the printer in question is on the chromebook list of being usable with the chromebook. (pixma MG5520) So. . . the question is. . . . how do I install it. . . .there must be a way.

    Hi booknest2,
The PIXMA MG5520 is set up a little differently when using it with a Chromebook than other Android devices. First, let's set it up on your network:
    1. Go to the Home menu or press the Home button.
    2. Use the arrow keys until Wireless LAN Setup appears and select this option.
    3. If a 'WPS' prompt appears, press STOP.
    4. Select the Standard Setup option.
    5. Follow the remaining prompts on the printer menu to connect the unit.
Once your PIXMA MG5520 is connected to your netowrk, please set it up for Google Cloud Printing. You can do that by following this link:
    Setting up Google Cloud Printing
Once set up, if you are getting a "Printer Offline" error, please disable the ECP settings on your PIXMA MG5520 by following these steps:
    1. Turn your PIXMA MG5520 on.
    2. Select ECO Settings from the HOME screen.
    3. Using the up and down buttons, select an item. Using the left or right button, choose OFF or Disable for all the items in this menu.
Once set, please attempt to use Google Cloud Print.
    Hope this helps!

  • Hpe540f and moving to a bigger case and other minor questions

ok, so the thing is, is that since I've gotten my hpe540f (or VERY similar computer in the same line), I've been slowly improving the computer by adding a better graphics card and a better PSU (550ti and a 600 watt psu if you must know) and the case has started to get a bit cramped and the temperatures in the case are at a semi-alarming rate and I've tried different methods to lower the temperatures (cleaning/dusting and wire arranging), but I eventually deduced that it was the airflow of the case, so this is where my questions come in...
I've never really messed with a pre-built computer before and I just need to know that if you really can move to another case and whatnot easily (sounds like a silly question, but I've never had to move entire components to another case before and previous computers I had were built my dad or the both of us)
I've also had my eye on a certain case which seems to be bigger than my current case and is a bit on the cheap side, but has gotten good reviews and is made for gaming (which I intend to do a lot of or use most in my computer) I just would like to know if this computer case would work with the components I currently have and will last me...if not then by all means if you have any other suggestions on cases I could get, that would be great too
Below I'm going to link the product pages for the case and another page that seems to list most everything about my current computer minus the upgrades I've made over the years (but I listed them above and they aren't too significant that I doubt it would matter)

    Hi,
The issues that you will run into when transfering the existing "guts" of your PC to a new case are:
Motherboard mounting --> many cases should be able to accomodate most of the mounting holes
Rear I/O plate -- you need to remove this and transfer it to the new case as one is not included
USB header connectors -- make sure that the new case can handle the USB motherboard connectors
    Front panel connections
The case for the HPE-540f appears to have slotted air intake vents at the top so the PSU should be mounted fan up so it can draw cool air from the upper side vents.  Double check this as a possiblity on how to reduce heat.  Additional cooling ideas: PCI slot cooling fan and vented PCI slot covers.
My HP e9280t appears to have the same case. I am running a much higher wattge video card, higher wattage power supply, higher wattage processor, more memory dimms and three hard drives.  The point here is that I am not experiencing heat issues.

  • CB35-B3340: Cannot activate the google drive offer on my brand new chromebook.

The only bizarre thing i noticed is that the sticker on the chromebook says 100GB offer, while on the google pages it refers to the 1TB offer. When I click on redeem I get message "redeem failed, contact your supplier".

You should direct questions to those people.

  • Chromebook power adaptor

I'm one of the lucky early adopters who got a suspect power adaptor with an HP11 Ch romebook.
I've been asked to return it, and onscreen the instructions ask me to choose which type it is.
Unfortunately not only is the text on the picture of the power adaptor far too small and dark for my ageing eyes to read, but so is the text on my own power adaptor and the serial number on the bottom of the computer!.  And I don't have a magnifying glass, let alone a microscope!
I think I might have found the right computer serial number (It accepted the number I typed in, but I'm not sure I read it right).
    My questions:
1: Bearing in mind I've at least selected the right country (UK), will it make much difference to me if I chose the wrong one?
2: Is there any way of writing to HP/Google directly about this problem?  I can't see an email address or web form.
3:  (A more general question Why oh why is all information on electronic equipment SO **bleep** SMALL?  Is there a reason for making it illegible to any eyes beyond teenage years and without a magnifying glass?  For reference, I am shortsighted but don't need specs to type on the Chromebook.
    Thanks.

Since you must get the information from the label on the power adapter I suggest asking for assistance from a family member or friend. Otherwise you will have to find or purchase a magnifying glass so you can read the fine print.

  • Chromebook won't print last page (Google Cloud Print)

I have an MF6160dw. When I print from my Chromebook, the printer will print everything but the last page. The printer shows an error.

Hi mlourie. I will be able to assist you. The #822 error usually indicates an issue with the format of an image file. So that I can best assist you, I would like to ask a few questions: 1. Are you printing using the Google Cloud Print function or from the Google Remote Desktop? 2. Is it just one document that you are experiencing the issue with? 3. If it is one document, which format is the document saved in, and is the last page saved in a different format? I look forward to your reply. Should you need immediate assistance, please contact us at 1-800-OK-CANON (1-800-652-2666).

  • Shockwave Flash shuts down my Chromebook

Why does Shockwave Flash shut down my Chromebook?

I play an internet game that uses Shockwave Flash.  I use an Acer C710 Chromebook I got in March 2013.  In the beginning, it was pretty good with few shockwave problems.  I would receive messages saying that shockwave was unresponsive and I could wait it out, which I would, and it would usually start responding again.  I learned how to clean the cache and delete the websites stored on the computer.  That helped.  Shockwave would sometimes crash and I would have to reload the page.  Around 7 December, a new update came out for the Chromebook.  Now, Shockwave does not even tell me that it has become unresponsive, it just shuts down the computer and restarts it. (If I play the same game on a PC, I use Firefox because it is faster and I don't have these problems.  If I use Chrome on the PC, Shockwave will become unresponsive but will not shut down my computer.)  Someone told me about extensions (User agent switchers) for Chrome so that I could run Firefox or another browser on my Chromebook.  If I choose to do that, I can sometimes play longer without problems--with those I sometimes get an "unresponsive" message or sometimes I get a shut down.  I talked to a Chrome Ninja this week and did a Recovery.  If I do not update my Chromebook, I'm back to getting the "unresponsive" messages instead of getting the shut down.  I believe something happened with the 7 December update.  I have asked the Ninja but have not heard back, which is why I asked the question here.  I appreciate any thoughts.

  • Chromebook and Adobe Connect 8?

    Hi Again -
I have a learner who just purchased 'ChromeBook' device and is trying to run connect off it.  He can hear the presentation and view shared apps just fine, but when he tries to talk into his microphone we get nothing.  The Audio Setup Wizard runs flawlessly for him - but once in the meeting room he is without a voice.
I researched some items called 'pepper flash' and other nuances regarding the device, but have not been able to crack the mystery.  Anybody with experience on this device?
    I found this: http://http://www.connectusers.com/forums/cucbb/viewtopic.php?id=5591
and this:   https://groups.google.com/group/chromebook-central/browse_thread/thread/8959cac592778ee0  (the extension they are talking about only organizes the icons, basically makes a shortcut...but for a product that doesn't work on the machine!)

Hi Heyward - thank you sincerely for your reply.
I've e-mailed the user and am waiting on the exact model number/specs of the device.
This person/device in question is not a host - they are a participant in the sessions.  I should have mentioned that. They can log into the meeting fine and the visuals/host audio are coming through, but they are unable to speak during the meeting.  We haven't tried their webcam, but participants aren't using webcams in this implementation.
I'm baffled because when the gentleman runs the audio setup wizard it performs flawlessly.    The articles I posted above made it seem that the camera wouldn't work for whatever reason - and if the camera won't work then the mic not working is not a huge stretch - just need to make sure that I am not missing anything.
I'm going to have to put a tech limitation statement on my requirments document saying 'not compatible with Chromebook devices', hopefully there aren't other devices that this affects.

    Hi,
Copy is no problem, the printer will work similar to a photocopy machine (many people call it as Xerox finction). Not yet available at this time. One option: scan to SD card then move to chromebook.
    Regards.

  • Chromebook

I have just bought the Acer C720 Chromebook and can get a document to wait in the print queue but cannot get my officejet pro 8100 to actually print it. I have tried looking for drivers but they only seem to be available for windows, mac and linux. Do I just need to go out and buy another brand of printer that works?

Hi there, you can't print from a Chromebook using drivers. You will need to use the Google Cloud Print service and for this you'll need to have a Google account. Once you're logged in to your Google account just enter the 8100's ePrint email address in the field at this link https://www.google.com/cloudprint/learn/setup-hp.html
Once you've completed this setup step you can print from the Chromebook to the 8100 by using Ctrl+P from your keyboard.
Hope this information helps but post back if you've any questions. By the way this is not unique to HP printers and all makes of printer must be used via the Cloud Print service when printing from a Chromebook.
    Best.
