Chromecast - Does airport express run in isolation mode?

Hi -
I just bought a Chromecast and it's not working.  One of the troubleshooting questions is:
"If you have a dual band router, ensure that it is not in isolation mode. This may require a small change in your Wi-Fi router settings. "
My Airport Express (2013 model) is a dual band router.
http://www.apple.com/airport-express/specs/
The Apple specs at the link above dont tell me any more about isolation mode - at least not in any language I understand.
I would appreciate anyone with experience with Chromecast to pass on some information on this thread.
Thanks in advance.

For the AirPorts, the Guest Network is disabled by default. You would enable it using the AirPort Utility, as follows:
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Edit > Wireless tab > Enable Guest Network
Unless you are planning on supporting guest wireless clients, this should remain disabled. When enabled, the overall available wireless bandwidth must be shared thus potentially impacting performance. A Guest Network does not require a user to know a password. This is similar to Wi-Fi networks provided in coffee shops and is known as a "open" network.

I have two Airport Expresses running at my house. Both are connected to different types of speakers. Neither speaker set has its own equalizer, and both require a different EQ setting to sound just right. Does anyone know of a way to have iTunes automatically change its EQ setting based on which Airport Express it is streaming to?

I'm in the same boat. I have a 6 zone amplifier running with 6 airport expresses to different rooms inside and outside the house. Each has it's own acoustic characteristics. I'd really love to be able to set each airport to equalize based on my SPL frequency sweep I did for each room.
Setting the eq in itunes won't do it as that is global plus I have many more sources for auiod other than itunes that use the AEs directly.

  • Airport Express in 802.11n mode with an Xbox 360

I have an Airport Express (with software 7.5.2) and am having problems connecting my Xbox 360 in 802.11n mode.  I have an Xbox 360 (one year old, not the new 360 S Console) and an Xbox Wireless N Networking Adapter (Model 1398).
I believe my Airport Express is working fine as I've been able to connect my MacBook and iPad 2 when I've run the Airport Express in any combination of modes -- 802.11g 2.4 or 5.0 GHz, 802.11b compatibility, etc.
I've also found that the Xbox will connect when I run the Airport Express in 802.11g mode, but it fails to connect in any n mode.  I've tried several combinations including varying the security -- WPA2 or no security at all.  Since the same Xbox and Apple hardware can connect when running in 802.11g mode, and I've got Apple devices talking to the AE in 802.11n mode, I'm suspecting the Xbox hardware.
I've looked through a few forum posts here, and most of them seemed to be older and referenced a bug in an older version of the AE software.  At least one mentioned that the person had a defective Xbox wireless adapter, which I'm beginning to suspect.
I've even turned on syslog logging on the Airport Express and used my MacBook as the syslog server.  Even though I've turned the Syslog level up to 7 (Debug) on the AE, I don't get any messages about Xbox connection attempts -- just successful connections from my iPad and MacBook.
    Any advice is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Dan

Hi. Thanks for the reply. It turns out that the router was not going into n mode because of the security I set on it. I finally figured this out and the AE did connect in n mode after all.
Well at least it's working now but I feel a little bad for posting when it was my fault!!
    Cheers!

    Hello Hornet12,
Indeed, iTunes 10.2 or later will be required to utilize AirPlay.
    Using AirPlay

    AirPlay requirements and capabilities
To get full AirPlay features, make sure your AirPlay-enabled devices are running the latest software updates. The table below identifies minimum AirPlay requirements and capabilities:

From the Videos, iPod, Photos, Music, and YouTube apps on iOS devices, stream videos, music, and photos to an Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation), or stream music to an AirPort Express or compatible third-party device.
With iOS 4.3 and later, you can also stream video and audio from a website or a third-party app installed on your iOS device if the developer for the app or website has added AirPlay functionality.

  • Cannot obtain DHCP IP address via ethernet for Airport Express running 7.6.4

Printer connected to LAN port on Airport Express running 7.6.4 cannot get IP address via DHCP.  Airport Express is connected to an existing Wi-Fi network.  Downgrading firmware version to 7.6.3 or lower resolves the issue.  100% reproducible.  Tried this with 2 Airport Express devices and both had the same issue. Printer is a Star Micronics TSP 100 (point of sale receipt printer). This printer is used by almost all iPad based POS systems.  It is affecting business operations.

Well I solved my own problem and it was working fine for months until Yosemite came along....
To tether my iPhone USB connection to an Airport Express Base Station (AEBS)- i did the following
    1. Connect iPhone and turn on Personal Hotspot using USB
    2. Going to System Preferences on the Mac click on Network
    3. Set up the Ethernet setting with a static IP - (manual)
    Configure IPv4 Manually -
    IP Address: 192.168.2.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
    Router: 192.168.2.1
Next step is to configure the AEBS
    Start from fresh -
    Create a New Network
    Internet Settings set to :
    Connect Using: Static
    IPv4 Address: 192.168.2.3
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router Address: 192.168.2.1
    DNS Servers: 192.168.2.1
Then under the Network tab the router mode is set to DHCP and NAT
It worked beautifully until recently , after the upgrade to Yosemite it was working for about 1 month and then as of yesterday it stopped working.
I am not a networking guru and I am open to suggestions on a better setup. Has anyone got this setup working too?

Yes on both. FWIW, I currently have a Dell laptop that has no issues connecting to my AirPort network. I also have AirPort Utility for Windows installed on this laptop when I need to administer the base station. In my case the laptop is running Windows 7.

Does Airport Express need to be configured to allow AirPlay to work between an iPhone 4s and an iPad2?
Also, attempting to use Airplay with iOS7 shuts off sound to the speakers while allowing sound thru the ear buds!  The fix was to restart by depressing the lock switch (opposite the sound out port).

Does Airport Express need to be configured to allow AirPlay to work between an iPhone 4s and an iPad2?
You need a minimum of three things for AirPlay:
An iTunes host. This can be a Mac, PC, or iOS device.
    A wired or wireless network.
An AirPlay Speaker. This can be an AirPort Express, Apple TV, or a AirPlay-Ready device.
Is your goal to stream between two iOS devices?

Does airport express need to be connected to Internet to use purely for AirPlay ? Or can I just attach to my stereo and have my Mac connect directly to it in the absence of a wireless network? Tks

you will have to configure the express to create a wireless network but you do not need a connection to the internet.

    Wirelessly
Just select the option to make your AirPort Express join an existing network in the setup process

  • Does airport express stream directly to wireless speakers or does it need to be connected through an audio cable to an amplifier before the speakers

Does airport express stream directly to wireless speakers or does it need to be connected through an audio cable to an amplifier before the speakers?

I got an additional question bout this topic:
is it possible to use both at the same time? in my case cable-connected speakers in the living-room and an Airplay-speaker in the bathroom and/or kitchen?
so I select the Airport Express as Airplay-Output on my iPad and from there it's shared via cable AND wireless? this would solve the problem of being able to only select ONE Airplay-Output on my iPad at the same time...

  • Does Airport Internet Sharing Support WIFI Mode G?

I am trying to connect a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet to the Internet via Internet Sharing. The N810 only supports B and G mode WIFI. I can't get a connection. Does Airport Internet Sharing Support WIFI Mode G? Do I have to configure for this?
    Thanks

I am trying to connect a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet to the Internet via Internet Sharing. The N810 only supports B and G mode WIFI. I can't get a connection. Does Airport Internet Sharing Support WIFI Mode G?
    Yes.
I've used my 802.11b/g/n capable MacBook to share an ethernet connection with my 802.11g ONLY iPod Touch.
Does the N810 see the network?
Does any other WiFi capable device in your home see the Internet Sharing SSID?
Did you give your Internet Sharing a password? Internet Sharing uses WEP for encryption, and the rules for creating the WEP Hex key from a text string password are different for Macs vs everyother WiFi device in the world. 1st try no password. If that works, then move on to using a simple 5 character password for 40/64 bit WEP, or a 13 simple password for 104/128 bit WEP.

Does airport express have auto on/off schedule feature? Or any other ways to turn it on/off automatically.

The Timed Access feature of the AirPort Express will allow you set the specific times that each wireless device will be allowed to connect to the wireless network each day.
However, this feature cannot be used to "turn on", or "turn off" the AirPort Express device.

Is there a Windows version of the Airport Utility (I think that's what it's called)...
Yes. That is only needed to configure the AirPort Express (AX).
...or do I have to go through Windows setup software?
You may have to do that to get Windows to join the wireless network.
