Chromium/Chrome Google Hangouts extension flashes on systray

From the first time hangouts make it's appearance, as a chromium/chrome extension, i've been noticing the following behaviour (did not ask for this months ago hoping this was a bug, but since no one is complaining, maybe is just me).
I use kde, and the hangouts extension integrates fine, with it's own icon on the systray.
But whenever I interact with the extension, or it's status gets updated (incoming message/readed message), the systray icon flashes, i mean, it dissapears and appears again instead of just updating the image. Not a big deal, but from time to time it will become unusable also, showing the contact list, but not opening any chat window for any contact (though is not frozen, since you can scroll through it).
Anyone experiencing similar issues on kde or other desktops? I run it on windows at work and it works flawlessly.

I tried the extension on gnome-shell, but got the same behaviour, just less noticable since notifications are hidden by default on gnome-shell (you need to "push" the bottom of the screen with the mouse).
This is starting to annoy me, does anyone know any app -kopete, telepathy, pidgin, or any- that works with multiple conversations as hangouts? Telepathy works fine for 1:1 convs, but I can't figure out how to access "hangouts session", where multiple contacts chat at the same time.

No sound with flash through chromium or google-chrome-stable

I set up ALSA with snd_usb_audio, and it works with Firefox and other applications like vlc. However, I can't get any sound from chromium or google-chrome-stable. I installed the pepper flash plugin, enabled it in chrome://plugins, and disabled the regular flash plugin, but this didn't work. Also, I'm using a 64-bit HP laptop.

My flash player keeps crashing in only firefox and not in Chrome google

I have reset firefox and unistalling and reinstalling and checked the updates but nothing works. I will be using chrome google from now as you don't care so much for the community as you say you do.

A known issue with FlashPlayer on some older Macs may well be to blame. If that is the case you need to downgrade to version 12 until Adobe release a fix.

Downloading chrome - how do downloads work on a Mac? I have a Google Hangout in 10 minutes.

I am trying to prepare for a Google Hangout and downloaded Chrome. It downloaded, but now I don't know what to do. I just got my Mac and have not had time to figure this out on my own.
Do I just go to downloads? I tried that the other day with OpenScad and it didn't work.
Can anyone help with the Chrome download? Thanks!

Yes, it'll be in Downloads. There should be a .dmg file which you double-click on to open the image; you should then see the image on your desktop, double-click that to see the installer or the Chrome app itself. If it's the app, just drag it to your Applications folder.
Hangouts should actually work in any browser, as far as I know.

Why is adobe forcing me to download Chrome and the Google Toolbar with Flash? I'd rather not see CNN videos than have to have Chrome and the Google Toolbar on my computer.

You shouldn't download Adobe software from anywhere but the adobe.com domain. If you download it from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ you will get an opt-out for Google Chrome (or McAfee, or whatever is on today's menu):
Better yet, use the offline installers that were posted earlier.
While I use many Google products and services, Google Chrome is not one of them. I especially don't like how it installs, setting itself as the default browser without asking, and when you uninstall it, it will remain the default browser, which of course causes lots of problems.

Any development of a Google Hangouts standalone linux application?

So, I used gtalk a lot with Pidgin (and later Empathy) before its 'death' or 'transition' to Google Hangouts. I can use it as a chrome extension but Windows users have a standalone application, which is a lot better.
Or even a telepathy plugin - even if the plugin isn't FOSS, is such a plugin feasible, so it would work with Empathy and KDE Telepathy, for example?

XMPP made it possible for third-party clients to hook into Google Talk back in the day. But after the merge with Hangouts, XMPP support was dropped. Google has signaled through its actions that it's not interested in opening up Hangouts to third-party integrations, so I doubt we'll ever see something like this--or, if we do, it'll be a clandestine effort at constant risk of being blocked.

E18, google hangouts and virtual desktops

I have a problem after upgrading to e18. When I receive a new message in the google hangouts (chrome extension) the window to change desktops pops up highlighting the desktop with that particular hangout. In e17 it worked all fine. I clicked that desktop, changed to it and the window was gone. In e18, I not only cannot change to the desktop using this window but the window stay forever even if I change manually. Restart helps but this quite annoying. I went through all settings but it did not help. As said, it was all fine in e17

Thunderbolt camera stopped working with Skype and Google Hangouts

Some time ago my built in camera on the thunderbolt stopped working with Skype. If I activate the camera the green light turns on but the screen either remains black or it shows that spinning loading incon forever. The green light stays on indicating the camera is active no matter what I do with skype even if I press the button to deactivate the camera. The green light remains on until you completely kill skype. Rebooting, reinstalling skype, etc. does nothing.
Today I disocvered I have the same thing with Google hangouts. All the way around exactly the same and the green light won't turn off until you kill the web browser. Same thing with FireFox or Safari. Also it no longer works on Viber either.
It's quite infuriating.
I am not sure if this has anything to do with this awful virus like program called "CamTwist" that I installed once and had a very difficult time removing or not.
Reinstalling OS X from scratch is not an option. Too much work, too many programs to reinstall and reconfigure etc.
How can I get my camera back?
The camera works just fine with Photobooth and facetime.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:

The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Google Hangout video doesn't work on OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks")

Since upgrading to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), the video part of Google Hangout no longer works -- the video settings pane in Hangouts tells me that I have no camera. This isn't true; I'm on a laptop with a built-in camera, and the video shows up fine in other apps.
I've tried restarting Firefox, as well as uninstalling and re-installing the Google talk/video plugin. No dice.
This may be a red herring, but an informal poll of my co-workers seems to show that it's only people with 11" MacBook Airs that are affected. I find this rather suspicious, and I'm not sure it's actually a thing, but I suppose it's possible.

I'm seeing this problem as well, but only when I log in with Firefox. There's just a message on the right indicating that it's trying to logon but taking a long time.
If I use Chrome or Safari, hangouts works just fine.
I'm on Mavericks as well and I have the GoogleVoiceAndVideo stuff installed.

I logged in to fb but could not 'work' anything, changed browser to chrome google and everything worked, why is this?

I could login, could read everything on fb but could not 'work' on fb, could not 'like', not post, not access anything.
My tech suggested changing from firefox to chrome google and everything worked.
Only other problem is that windows has taken over the posts of my photos and I can't see the photos now, just little green box in middle of screen unless I click on the box and it opens up the photo. How do I get my photos back now, as well.
Am going back to firefox once more to see if everything is cleared up.
Any suggestions about getting photos 'released' would be good.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Google HangOut doesn't open

Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro with OS X Version 10.7.4
I installed Google HangOut without problems but when I will start it, the loading bar stops at the middle and them shows a message that the page needs to be refreshed. I tried at Chrome, Safari and firefox... all have the same error.
Does any one have the same problem? Any tips to solve it?

I'm having this issue on Mac OS X 10.7.4 too.
For me, the hangout starts to load, and then I get a message saying the Google Talk Plugin has crashed. Then the hangout ends with reason code 3.
I'm 99% certain this started after updating Lion to 10.7.4
FYI, I was able to start hangouts previously. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Google Talk plugin, and have tried in multiple browsers after restarting, etc. No luck so far.

Google+ Hangouts video plugin won't install

I have to use Google+ Hangouts for my job (please don't laugh), and i can't install the plugin. I'm running OSX 10.8.5 and when you attempt to install the Google Voice and Video it says:
Google Voice and Video can't be installed on this disk. Mac OS X v 10.4.8 or later is required.
What's going on with this and why can't I install this plugin?

Is their a way to block ads on Facebook? Chrome has an extension which works well.

I have enable the popup blocker. Google Chrome has an extension that blocks ads on Facebook. Does Firefox have something similar?
I've been using Chrome almost exclusively because of this. Plus Chrome has an extension that eliminates Facebooks new "Ticker".

The ads are finally gone from FB. But the ticker is still there, not a huge deal, I just find it annoying.
Mozilla was my default browser for a long-time, then I tried Google Chrome, and I have to say, it works much better for me. Crashes less, a *lot* less. Maybe Firefox doesn't work well with Windows Vista (which I hate, but must cont. to use)
The Chrome extension for blocking ads and the ticker, was extremely simple.
Just installed and it worked.
I have other problems with Firefox, the font size on the menu, for one. The one thing that keeps me drawn to Firefox is Reminderfox.

Cannot install Google Cast extension (for Chromecast) on Ellipsis 7

Just got an Ellipsis 7 (MV7B_31D41_422Y) last week, and a Chromecast yesterday.
There is no download option for the Google Cast extension on my Ellipsis or iPhone so I can't cast from Chrome on either device (only from a couple apps like Youtube that natively support casting).
I asked the Verizon rep before purchasing the Ellipsis if it and our iPhones supported Chromecast and he said YES. Didn't know I needed to ask about Chrome specifically.
If I'm missing something and this is possible then please tell me how to set it up.

I had already installed the Chromecast app on both, so I can cast Youtube, etc. just fine.
What I can't do is cast from Chrome on either device so that eliminates apps that don't have built-in casting (like xfinity's TV Go) or being able to cast a website from a tab in Chrome.
Not the end of the world, but does make the Ellipsis a bit less useful.
