Chromium takes over system volume control

Hi forum,
I'm using GNOME, ALSA (no PulseAudio or ESD), and Chromium on an i686 install.  On my laptop (an Asus F3Jm), Master is a toggle control, and PCM is the slider that controls the system volume.  The volume hotkeys on my laptop work correctly and control the PCM slider.  However, when I open a Flash applet or an HTML5 video in Chromium, the PCM volume jumps to 100% and cannot be controlled by the hotkeys (not even muted); instead, the applet's volume control is the only way I have to control the volume.  This is not an acceptable situation for me as some sites (for example Livestream) don't remember my volume setting and start off at 100% volume every time.
Well, sometimes.  Once in a while it actually does work as expected (application volume controlled independent of system volume, and system volume can still be controlled via hotkeys), which is the part I find particularly confusing.  I haven't figured out what the situations are where it does and doesn't take over the volume control.
(EDIT: It seems that it happens the first time, and only the first time, that I start Chromium after each system boot.  So one "workaround" could be to never shut down or reboot...)
I don't believe the OSS emulation is being used, because I've unloaded and blacklisted the snd_*_oss modules and don't have alsa-oss installed.  It's possible that Chromium is using the hw device instead of the default, but I don't know how to check for this or fix it.  I don't have Firefox installed, but I suppose I could try it if someone thinks a comparison might be useful.
Package versions:
alsa-lib 1.0.22-1
chromium 4.0.249.78-3
flashplugin 10.0.42.34-1
<your requested package here>
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

ALSA doesn't support per application volume control, which would explain the behavior. That behavior, however, is still incorrect, as normally applications respect the volume level and don't overwrite it without user intervention.
A simple solution would be to switch to (at least for me) more advanced OSSv4 or use pulse audio (which I personally dislike).
You should file a bug report for chromium (or check whether you got some settings wrong).

Does the sony minisystem have its own volume control?
If so, it sounds to me like your computer is getting stuck thinking that the minisystem is still connected, which would be the cause of your issues. There is a switch inside the headphone jack that gets flipped when headphones are connected, and that switch might be getting stuck in the "on" position. You may have to take the computer in for service in order to get that straightened out.

  • ITunes disables my Windows sounds and takes away the volume control

I have searched and found no answer to this- others have posted this same question.
I installed itunes and it removed my volume control from the task bar. It disabled my Windows sounds and took away the volume control from the System Tray next to clock. My media buttons no longer affect the volume either. I have to go into control panel to change my system volume.
At first- it only happened when my daughter would plug in her iPod and use iTunes, and then after we'd reboot the computer, the volume control would come back and no longer be disabled. Each time she used iTunes, it would happen again. Then a computer restart would bring it back. Now all of a sudden, nothing brings it back. I have to go about 4-5 screens deep into Control Panel to adjust the volume there. This is ridiculous and an absolutely unacceptable side effect of iTunes.
Does someone have an answer or do we need to delete iTunes and never again buy a crappy apple product?

    Figured it out!
Go to Control Panel -> Sound
In the “Playback” tab, click on your Speakers to highlight it, then click Properties. In the “Advanced” tab, under “Exclusive Mode”, uncheck the box that says “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device”. I restarted my computer after that, but I am not sure if you need to.
Then you can go to your taskbar and right-click and choose “Properties”. In the “Notification Area” tab, under System icons, “Volume” is no longer grayed out and you can now check the box to make it show up down near your clock again.

  • 10.4.7 Runs Slow, Spinning Beach Ball, "kass" takes over system

To the helpful frequenters of this forum:
Since installing Tiger and updating to 10.4.7 recently, I have experienced some major system slow downs on my computer. I am running a Titanium Powerbook G4 with 512MB RAM and 12GB free (from a 60GB hard drive).
My problems seem to center on Mail 2 app, which runs very slowly when accessing the IMAP server (a problem I never experienced with Mail 1 in the days of Panther). However, it extends to other applications: when launching iTunes and Safari, I often get a spinning beach ball and a 10-20 second hang that I never had before. Sometimes closing programs can take a long time. Force quit often does not respond, but for some reason pressing my laptop power key (as if to turn off the computer) helps to get things jump-started.
In my Activity Monitor, there is a Process called "kass" that is eating up anywhere from 20-30% of my processor. I think that this is connected to some sort of Key Access software that might have been installed on my computer for my college access, but I am not sure. Here are the details from Activity Monitor:

What I don't understand is why this is flaring up now, since the Key Access has always been there (on OS 10.1, 10.2, and 10.3 as I upgraded sequentially). Perhaps there is some sort of bad interaction with the 10.4.7 upgrade? I'm not really sure, but I was wondering how I would go about eliminating this hang up. It might be the source of so much slowing down on my computer!
    Thank you very much,
    Matthew

    Thanks for your help, everyone.
I seem to have solved the problem. The "kass" function was linked to KeyAccess, an app made by Sassafrass. This app was installed on my computer by my University so that I could use certain programs (such as Adobe Photoshop) while on the school network by obtaining a key through the school Internet connection. For some reason this process started to take over my computer once I upgraded to 10.4.7, so I just removed the application from my computer all together. Now the hang-ups in other programs, as well as the IMAP email seem to be back to their old speediness.
    Strange how these things work.

  • Can a host take over or remote control into a participants PC?

When a participant attends a abobe connect meeting, can the host remote controls or take over the participants PC?

In the middle of the Share pod is a button for "Share My Screen". Have them select that button and then share their desktop. They may need to install the add-in, but that should only take a couple seconds. Then they will need to click the button again.

  • System Volume Control Doesn't Work

I have two output devices connected to my Mac Mini. I have a set of speakers connected to the jack on the back of the Mac, and a Logitech USB headset connected to a USB port.
When I use the Logitech headset as the audio output device, the volume buttons on my apple wireless keyboard and my apple remote work as the should do, changing the system volume as they are pressed. However, when I change the output device to the built-in output jack, the output volume doesn't change as the volume keys/buttons are pressed. When I press the volume keys/buttons, the little volume icon shows up on the screen and the white dots increase/decrease as you would expect, but the output volume doesn't actually change. You can change the volume using the mouse and the slider, but that defeats the object of having a remote control or dedicated volume buttons. If I switch the output back to the USB headset, everything works normal again. So its only when the built-in output is selected that the volume can't be controlled using the keys/buttons.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Rob

If you have not yet restored to factory defaults I would try that. Maybe there is some corruption which is now in your backup.

  • Firefox will not open on startup and takes over system resorces. Uninstalled. When attempting to reinstall, installer will not run from website, and can not save file to HD. No error message, it just never appears.

After a system reboot, Firefox would not open. I opened the task manager, and saw that Firefox was using alot of memory, and was using 50% of the CPU. I ended the process, and restarted. The situation just repeated several time.
I uninstalled Firefox using uninstall programs from the control panel.
I then tried to run the Firefox installer from the website, it would open the download window, then the "run the install" window. After clicking "Run", the window just closes. So I attempted to just download the install file, and clicked "Save". I tried to save the file to several different locations. A download window would open, and run, but the file would not be there.
I was running 3.6.12, the current version. And that is was I tried to install. After that failed, I also tried to install the beta 4, with the same results.
No error messages have opened, and I have run scans for malware/spyware, and didn't see anything that jumped out as a problem. I am running Win Explorer right now. And it is running fine, but I much prefer my Firefox.

  • Volume Control I

My soundblaster Volume control icon on my task bar has disapeard. How do I get it back. Note am not talking about windows volume cotrol icon
    Thank You
    Johnny:angry:

Seems as if we have the same issue here.
Ever since installing Sound Blaster 6 Plug & Play in this INtralink PC (Pent-III W-98SE) my system volume control has simply vanished - from taskbar, start menu, settings - can't find it anywhere!
Installed every driver I could download; still no sound other that crackles when booting up, and no settings window to be found.
There was an IRQ conflict, but resolved that - to no avail.
When I try to open a sound file from RealPlayer or WMP i get the "Other device may be using" line - but can't find said device, even if it is competing for resources.
Tried the above solutions, but the reccomended settings just were not there to select.
Suppose I could do a clean re-install of W98, but there goes all my data, and don't really want to do that.
Is it time to buy a new sound card and start over?
Don't really want to dump much more $ into this old box - Domestic Management would rather just replace it. Would like to keep it as a backup tho.
    Open to suggestion!

  • MenuBar volume control does not work

itunes volume control DOES control the volume of my external speakers which are attached to a ProSonus FireBox.
Website links with controls of audio DO control the volume of my external speakers which are attached to a ProSonus FireBox
However, the main Mac MenuBar sound control slide bar does not control the sound itunes or these websites AND the MenuBar sound control slide bar does not control either my internal or external speakers.
Sound Control panel Input Panel is set at the PreSonus FireBox (0260) device with mic setttings at mid level and the master output volume set about 1.5 units up with "show volume in menu bar" box checked and Mute box clear of checkmarks.
The Sound Control Panel Output panel is set at Presonus FireBox (0260) with the master output volume set at 1.5 units with "show show volume in menu bar" box checked and Mute box clear of checkmarks. Controlling the slider from the Sound Control Panel DOES control the slider in the Mac MenuBar but not the sound.
The fact that sound is coming out of the firebox indicates sound from itunes and web site sound links IS being redirected from the internal speakers to the firebox and then the firebox is redirecting the sound to the external speakers.
However, the volume control at the mac is not sending out a lower
signal to the firebox or the firebox is not responding to the lower signal or something else has control over the volume control.
There are two clues. The volume control of itunes DOES work and the manual control of the Firebox is working.
Another interesting observation is that the "Sound Effects" panel of the Sound Control Panel does appear to work correctly; the alerts are supposed to work through the internal speakers (as the drop down list box is selected that way) and the Master volume does limit the alert volume. But I find it interresting that the Master volume is coupled to the internal speakers when the Master Volume should be coupled to the firebox (and then through to the external speaakers).

    Hi stoye-
You cannot control the volume of the digital signal. The presonus converts the digital signal to analog and the volume control is done there.

    Can you help

    Sosure
What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 10 running on?
What video card/graphics card does your computer use? NVIDIA GeForce? If so, please read the Announcement about the Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA GeForce issue which is found at the top of this web site. Does that apply to you? The explanation for the situation and the fix (roll back of the driver version) are all included in that Announcement.
We need to rule in or out this factor at the onset before we get to other questions
    a. non NIVIDIA video card/graphics card driver
    b. project preset and properties of source media

  • Firefox takes over windows hotkeys (Fn + Volume Up)

Firefox takes over windows hotkeys (Fn + Volume Up). I am used to adjusting global volume control (windows mixer) from my keyboard, but firefox takes over Fn + ... hotkeys so they don't work in firefox windows. How to disable this feature in firefox?
    Thanks

This is still a problem and a very annoying one!! With the newer versions of adobe flash (currently here 11.5.502.135) I cannot change volume with Fn+F keys after pressing anywhere on my firefox window. First I have to unfocus my firefox window and only then I can change volume. This problem doesn't occur in flash player 10.3 for example.

  • System tray volume control

    Hey all -
I'm looking for a volume control system tray applet that is controlled by a slider rather than mouse wheel. This is mostly because I want to use this on my laptop, which I normally control via touch pad rather than a 'full' mouse. This takes both volwheel (which is a great app, just not suited for me here...) and gvtray (also a great app, but hideously ugly and ill suited for this.)
    Any help?

i dont know what version of gvtray you were using, but this one has a slider.  i've hardcoded the icons, but you can easily change that.  default is my gnome volume icons.

let me know if you need anything, i know longer use this script so it may take me a while to figure out what's wrong.  also i didnt write it, just edited for my needs.
edit: i've just looked at it again. it only uses one icon, so there is effectively no status indicator.  i think it was gbatt that i made use multiple icons.  sorry.

I would like to designate a single device to control the Apple TV, but anytime another device enters and logs on it takes over the display and whatever is on that screne appears.  Is there a way to set the Apple TV so this does not happen?

Glen beck is a conservative news commentator , he now has a tv Chanel broadcasted only by the Internet, is is GBTV I get it on ROKU. I cannot get that or FOX NEWS or CNET on my new apple TV.
