Chunking and Tomcat Servlets

HI all, I've got a method which transmits data to a java servlet. I;ve added Java 1.5's chunking capability on the client and it works on 1 machine with no problems. Yet a whole lot of others break...
Client side:
URLConnection con = null;
con = servletAddress.openConnection();
con.setDoInput(true);
con.setDoOutput(true);
con.setUseCaches(false);
if(chunked && supportsChunking()){
( (HttpURLConnection) con).setChunkedStreamingMode(0);
after this, i open a DataInputStream from the connection and send an object...
I get an exception on the reply...
java.io.IOException: Server returned HTTP response code: 501 for URL: http://xxxxxx.xxxxxxxxx.xxxxxxxx
     at sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.getInputStream(HttpURLConnection.java:1133)
There is a bit of stuff on the forums about chunking but my problem seems to be on the server. Its generating a 501 not supported error, yet all versions of tomcat, and all JREs are identical. What could the reason be for 1 machien working and a whole bunch of others breaking?
Dan

HI all, its been a while since I touched this, but just found the cause - posted here in case anyone else has the same troubles.
Most of our servers here are using the Squid proxy. This does not support HTTP1.1 and falls back to HTTP1.0. This means that Tomcat and my client are 100% fine, but going through squid causes java to throw an exception, as HTTP1.1 and especially chunked encoding are not supported

  • Servlets and Tomcat/Apache

    Okay,
    Tomcat 4.1 running with Apache.
    Installed mod_jk, piece of cake.
    JSPs run through Apache like a dream.
    Tomcat examples ( jsp and servlets) run through Apache perfectly ( that is no :8080 business).
    My JSP's run through Apache no problem. Works great.
    My SERVLETS WILL NOT RUN THROUGH APACHE FOR ANYTHING.
    My context looks like this in server.xml:
    <Context path="/nuweb" docBase="/home/shared/nuweb" debug="0"
    reloadable="true" crossContext="true">
    <Logger className="org.apache.catalina.logger.FileLogger"
    prefix="nuweb" suffix=".log"
    timestamp="true"/>
    </Context>
    Note: that I am not under <TOMCAT_HOME>/webapps.
    The reason is that I will, in production not be the Unix admin on the server. I will only have priviledges within my directory. I will not be able to drop war files in the webapps directory. I will not be able
    to start and stop tomcat or apache ( there are 100 diffrent apache contexts on that machine and someday many of them will be going through tomcat for jsp and servlet support).
    My servlets will only run if I put :8080/nuweb/servlet/HelloServlet in the URL. Take off the 8080 and I get Page not found. Not the tomcat 404 page, the Browswer 404 errror.
    Here is my web.xml which lives in the WEB-INF directory of of /home/shared/nuweb
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

    In devlopment I am on a system that is very close to what the production server will look like ( Tomcat 4.1 same version of Apache, same Unix ). In development I can restart all the servers edit server.xml etc. On the production I would have to schedule that stuff. I want to be able to compile classes and drop them in the WEB-INF/classes... directory and have them run. Is that too much to ask?

  • Can't execute windows command in servlet with JDK1.5 and tomcat 5

    Hi all,
    I have a web application which uses a servlet to execute windows commands, such as "mkdir", "mv", and "rmdir". In my servlet, I use java Runtime() class to implement the execution.
    Under jsdk1.4 and tomcat 4, it is fine for the servlet to execute those command. But uncer jdk1.5 and tomcat 5, it gives the following error:

  • Communication problem between NetBeans and Tomcat

    hi!
    i got a quite mysterious problem. here is what happens:
    - i start NetBeans 5.5.1 (the first time)
    - i want to debug my JSF-Project, the Debugger starts
    - After a few seconds the debugger waits for tomcat (it sais: "Waiting for Tomcat...") and tomcat starts
    - Again after a few seconds the tomcat-debugger-output sais "Tomcat startet in 3333 ms".
    okay.
    when i enter http://localhost:8084/ in my browser i get the tomcat homepage, so the server has definitely started! But nothing happens in NetBeans and nothing happens with my project....
    In the lower-right corner i see this blue working-bar that sais "deploying project" but nothing happens. The Project-Debugger-Output still sais "Waiting for Tomcat..." but nothing happens...
    And after something around 3 minutes (i guess it's a timeout) i get the error "Starting of Tomcat failed." But is HAS started, i can login to the Administration-Area in my browser!
    so i guess there is a communication problem between netbeans an tomcat. Netbeans waits for a message from tomcat but tomcat doesn't send it..or netbeans doesn't understand it.
    But the story goes on:
    When i press the debug-button a second time it takes only a few seconds till i get the message: "Tomcat server port 8084 already in use". OF COURSE! Because Tomcat has already startet and can't be stoped by NetBeans.
    i'm trying to solve this problem for 4 days now, so i would be very happy if anyone has an idea where to start/continue the search...
    thanks,
    flo.

  • Why do I need to restart Apache and Tomcat every time a java file is change

    If a java file is changed and complied the changes are not reflected if Tomcat is not restarted.
    The settings in server.xml are as:
    <!-- Tomcat Manager Context -->
    <Context path="/manager" docBase="manager" debug="0" privileged="true"/>
         <Context path="/cf" docBase="cf" debug="0" reloadable="false"/>
    Here "cf" is my Application folder under webapps. The reloadable property when set to "true" for standalone Tomcat on Windows98 reflects the changes for compiled java files without restarting Tomcat. But on Linux 7.1 with Apache 1.3.19 and Tomcat 4.0.3 this is not working.
    Also tried out with Manager Application of tomcat-users.xml with reloadable="false" as well as reloadable="true",
    But when I reload the application using the command
    http://servername:8080/manager/reload?path=/appli.name
    It tells me that the application is reloaded but changes in the java file are still not reflected.
    Also when reloaded through Manager Servlet, Only my load-on-startup servlet is reloaded, but other java classes are not.
    Is it neccessary to execute this reload command from the server itself. I m executing it from a remote m/c. and have mapped the application with a domain name virtually.
    Is it the case with Tomcat on Linux with Apache. Or is something going wrong on my part.
    Can someone Help out plz.
    Regards,
    Rupali

    or you can "touch" your web.xml file.
    touch web.xmlor that command is for *nix systems, not sure what the Windows command is.  But basically, when you edit the web.xml, even if it means updating the last modified time, it will restart only your application and you should see the changes.

  • NetBeans 5.0 and Tomcat 4.1

    Hello,
    I'm using NetBeans 5.0 and I have been using the Bundled Tomcat version 5.5.9 for my servlet container and everything's been great. Now that I'm ready to push my application up to a web host, I found that my host (lunarpages) runs with Tomcat 4.1 which uses version 2.3 of the servlet container. Tomcat 5.5 uses servlet container 2.4.
    So I downloaded Tomcat 4.1 (which has 2.3) and I don't know how to properly tell Netbeans to use it. When I open Server Manager and select 'Add Server', I can't just tell NetBeans to point to my Tomcat 4.1 directory. It wants me to select from a dropdown list of servers and Tomcat 4.1 isn't in the list.
    I tried to fake NetBeans out by selecting the 'Tomcat 5' server and pointing to my Tomcat 4.1 directory but I'm getting the following message when I try to run:
    FAIL - Unknown command /deploy
    C:\workspace\myApp\nbproject\build-impl.xml:425: Deployment error:
    Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to get Tomcat 4.1 running with NetBeans 5.0?
    Thanks,
    Eric

    I found that my host (lunarpages) runs with Tomcat 4.1 which uses version 2.3 of the servlet containerPlease read the post before answering, the reasoning is crystal clear.
    I don't have a concrete answer to this problem, but I do have a suggestion.
    1) You can add your own tomcat server to netbeans. Under the runtime tab you will find servers, if you right click this you can add a server. Use this to manually configure your own server
    2) as for the servlet spec problem, when creating a web project setting the java EE version to 1.3 might solve the problem... I can't tell this for sure because I've never done it.

  • How to compile and run servlets in Eclipse?

    Does somebody known how can I compile and run servlets in Eclipse IDE? I've added and configured Tomcat's plugin. I've created a project with my example servlets source, and I don't know what farther. How do I have compile it without main method? I must add web.xml file from Tomcat's directory into projects in Eclipse and modify it?

    Try googling for "eclipse servlet", surely someone has written instructions.

  • Eclipse and Tomcat questions

    Hi everyone,
    Lastnight I setup Eclipse to work with Tomcat, which works very good, but there are something I don't understand.
    1. My files are put in my workspace in (C:\Documents and Settings\...etc)
    How does Tomcat (which is installed in C:\Tomcat) know that it should get the files from my workspace directory?
    Because in the C:\Tomcat directory I can't find any .XML file that refers to my workspace directory.
    2. How I developed my servlets till now, I had some other free editor, I needed to compile my servlets then restart Tomcat and then test it.
    With Eclipse + Tomcat plugin, all I need to do save the servlet and apparently the source code is compiled automatically. All I need to do is refresh the servlet in my browsers (very handy and easy to develop like this). But my question is, does Eclipse compile the servlet automatically after saving? And why doesn't tomcat have to be restarted?
    Just a few questions to understand it a bit better, I'm really happy with this setup as it makes everything a lot easier.
    Regards,
    Steven.

  • Apache HTTP server and Tomcat integration using mod_jk

    Hi, I'm trying to get Apache version 2 Server running with Tomcat 7 as the Java Servlet container (I'll be using Solr as the webapp next). Followed the instructions in the wiki articles Tomcat and Apache and Tomcat.
    The applications work fine separately. It's only when I modify the httpd.conf files as instructed that I get this error when I restart httpd and tomcat. This problem seems identical to this topic although the user that posted it does't know how he fixed the problem.

  • Tomcat Servlet - TCP Port Already in Use?

    My problem is that tomcat/servlet is not releasing its TCP port after my servlet closes the port. Next time a servlet tries to use the port it gets an error "Port already in use". Using netstat I can see the port is still in use. If I stop tomcat and restart it, the port is released. I have not had this sort of problem writing C programs that use sockets.
    My setup is Fedora Core 6 with JDK1.5_14 and Tomcat 5.5.26. I know it's not the latest, but sockets and streams have been around for a long time.
    Actual implementation uses a trivial javaserver page to instantiate a class to create/accept connection from a client (JApplet). After connection, it starts a thread to receive data. I am using ServerSocket(), InputStreamReader(), and OutputStreamWriter(). On ServerSocket I set ReuseAddress to true.
    I have try/catch on all my I/O and use tomcat context log for error and OK messages. Data transfer is perfect. Detect close by client works. In the context log I see close of streams and ServerSocket occur with no exceptions. Then, I manually close the jsp window. No indication of any problems. If I use different port 2nd time (e.g. 50001) it all works perfect. If I use my default (50000) again, servlet gets an error during bind, "Port already in use".

    Actual implementation uses a trivial javaserver page to instantiate a class to create/accept connection from a client (JApplet). Bleah! Don't use a JSP for that. Use a servlet at worst. At best use a Servlet to start some other socket manager class which you can/have tested outside the Servlet Container environment.
    After connection, it starts a thread to receive data. I am using ServerSocket(), InputStreamReader(), and OutputStreamWriter(). On ServerSocket I set ReuseAddress to true.

In the context log I see close of streams and ServerSocket occur with no exceptions. Then, I manually close the jsp window. Closing the browser window has no affect on the server.

    Please advise or referShow some code. If you just want some generic advice it would be to close the port, as soon as you don't need it anymore. But you know that. Without any further code I think that is about all that can be said.
    P.S. Make the code as small as possible, compilable, but still demonstrating the problem. Also see: [this tutorial as an example...|http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-12-1996/jw-12-sockets.html?page=1]

    Hi Friends,
    I am using Oracle Application Server 10g (10.1.2.0.2) on windows
    I have the Vulnerability: Apache Tomcat servlet/JSP container default files.
    and the fix is Review the files and delete those that are not needed.
    i would like to know the location of the files to review and delete.Please suggest?
    Regards,
    DB

    Apache/Tomcat is not related to OAS, where did you get this info? OAS is based in a Orion Web Server and Apache HTTP Server, not Tomcat.
    For this kind of problems there are the CPU you may want to check in Metalink for them.
    Can you clarify also what default files?
    Greetings.

  • Set of user roles in Tomcat servlets

    I'm using Tomcat's role based authentication scheme for security of my web application and want to build a servlet to show a dynamic options menu based on the authenticated user's roles using my role-option table (with option and role columns). I want to know how to programatically obtain the set of roles of the authenticated user, independent from the type of the security realm used(MemoryRealm, JDBCREalm, JNDIRealm, etc)

    When I was looking at this a year ago I fired off an email to the JAAS guys and the servlet guys. I don't think there's anything that will help you that's in the standards. Perhaps websphere has its own API. I ended up punting and writing my own security layer using Filters and JAAS, with the drawback that my web server security doesn't flow into the EJB tier. Good luck with your project.

    CiscoWorks  Tomcat Servlet Engine service does not start.
    Events in the Windows Event Viewer:
    The CiscoWorks Tomcat Servlet Engine service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s).
    output pdshow and file stderr.log,  hs_err_pid2128.log attached.
    Do  you have an idea how to resolve this?
    Thanks!

    The only things which I see are wrong are the start types for the IPM NG database engine and HUM database engine services.  They must be set to Manual, not Automatic.  However, that would not account for the Tomcat crash.  The crash points to an error in the code which processes regdaemon.xml, but I see no reason why that should be failing.  As I said before, I think it would be best to open a Service Request.  Remote access would be helpful to dig into this problem in more detail.

  • Debugging a remote tomcat servlet

    I have the following setup:
    win2000sp2advanced server with an application (Interwoven TeamSite) running a scaled down version of Tomcat 3. This tomcat is serving a war called webdesk.war. Runtime, the war file is unpacked in this location: c:\iw-home\httpd\webapps\webdesk
    Sun Java Studio 8 on a winxpsp2 laptop
    I setup the following java and UML model in JS8:
    UMLProjectWebDesk
    WebDeskSRC
    My objective is to run a remote debugging session on the servlet and to set a breakpoint in the servlet class which I can see listed, using the projects view, in Libraries> webdesk.jar>com.interwoven.teamsite.filesys>FileTemplatesServlet.class
    I configured debugging on the TS servlet with the following switch on servletd.exe (the tomcat start executable called via a perl script to start as a windows service):
    "-Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,address=8888,suspend=n".
    When I select Run>AttachDebugging, I select JPDA Debugger, SocketAttach, dt_socket, 10.101.2.153 and port 8888 where 10.101.2.153 is the ip address of the server where servletd.exe is running and the servlet resides.
    In the Debugger Console I see "Attaching to 10.101.2.153:8888" and " User program running" so I guess that the debugger is actually attached (I have seen errors before when I did not put any attributes on the server's jvm).
    The problem that I have is more of a lack of understanding in the software. I googled a lot without finding the exact answers before resolving to this forum. I hope I am not asking for something stupid here, but need some guidance.
    It seems that the servlet class FileTemplatesServlet.java has not been downloaded by Java Studio Enterprise 8, so that I cannot put a breakpoint on this class.
    I also tried to put a breakpoint on any other jsp file that is part of my remote application and it seems not to work.
    The question is if someone can establish if I did something terribly wrong in setting up this project? Something simple I oversaw?

    thanks for the reploy! To be more specific:
    I have the source code for all the libraries that the web application uses here: c:\TS_JSE_debugging\webdesk\WEB-INF\lib
    I want to set a breakpoint in the local java source file C:\TS_JSE_debugging\webdesk\WEB-INF\lib\webdesk\com\interwoven\teamsite\filesys\FileTemplatesServlet.java
    In JSE8 I went into the java project properties window and clicked on the Sources tab. I added the Package Folder C:\TS_JSE_debugging\webdesk\WEB-INF\lib to the Source Package Folder. R:\iw-home\httpd\webapps\webdesk\WEB-INF\jspc was already listed there. I understand that JSE8 decompiled all the class files in the jspc folder into .java files and put them in the jspc folder. That makes me believe that my servlet FileTemplatesServlet.class should be debugged when I set a breakpoint now on a line in my local decompiled source in FileTemplatesServlet.java.
    I did that and then I get a message back in the bottom left pane of the JSE8 UI saying: " Source file for com.interwoven.teamsite.filesys.FileTemplatesServlet not found"
    Question is: I thought I just added the source to the project?
    I am now proceeding into the other 2 replies!
    thanks
