Cinema Display 20 inch + 15" MacBook Pro CABLES?

I just ordered a the cinema display mentioned above. What cords will I need to hook it up to my new "15 MBP? I ordered a mini DVI to DVI. Anything else I need? And...silly question...can you hook up an xbox 360 to the cinema display?

The Apple DVI to ADC adapter
<http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=7D CD62DB&nplm=M8661LL%2FB> amplifies the digital video signals to make up for the extra cable length. The Dr. Bott adapter
<http://www.drbott.com/prod/db.lasso?code=0111-DVAD> only add a very short cable, so doesn't need the amplifier. Does Belkin even make a DVI to ADC adapter? They do resell the Apple one. They make an ADC to DVI adapter, but that isn't what you need. You need an adapter with power supply.
Gefen also makes one, with amplifier,
<http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=1203>, but it costs even more than Apple's.

  • Why does my 27 inch LED cinema display freeze my Macbook Pro when connecting?

    Hi,
I've had a 27 inch cinema display for about 2 years now and love it.
However, a good 50-70% of the time whenever I attach my MacBook Pro, currently 15 inch late 2011, rather than waking up the MBP, it just freezes the computer.  The same thing used to happen with my 13 inch MBP.
    Any ideas why that is?
    thanks,
    TT

I finally decided to just take my MBP down to the Apple store and see what would happen if I connected it to one of their new ACDs.  At 1st, the guy at the Genius Bar told me that my MBP only supported 1280x800 as a maximum resolution.  I told him that was for my MBP screen, and not an external monitor.  Finally I convinced him to let me connect my MBP to one of their monitors.  Low and behold, looking at the Display settings pane I saw some addtional resolutions, including 2560x1600!
So, now I have confirmed that my MBP can drive an external monitor to a resolution of 2560x1600, using just the single mini displayport connection.  I just have to figure out what's wrong with my ACD.  Suspecting that my older ACD might not support this higher resolution, I did finally discover that my model only supports a maximum resolution of 1920x1600.
    Sorry for all the confusion...

  • Trouble connecting 23" Cinema Display HD to MacBook Pro

    Hello All!
As stated, I am trying to connect my 23" Cinema HD display (Model A1082) to a MacBook Pro 5,2. I purchased and am using a DVI to miniport adapter, have the USB plugged in. The third connector - the firewire - is different (when did THAT happen?), and so is not plugged in.
When I start up the laptop, both screens intermittently flash, blue. I can also intermittently see the startup/login screen on the laptop.
The cinema did seem to do the three equal, short LED flickers, so I have zapped the PRAM. No go.
I also read somewhere, in trying to figure this out, that the power adapter (mine is the issued 90W) on the moniter might be bad, and to consider replacing, going up to the 150W. The test for failure included sniffing it. It does smell bad, but I have no idea what it is supposed to smell like! (The things we do...!)
I should ALSO mention, that two earlier MacBook Pro Models lost video (Logic board?) while connected to this monior, but this may or may not be related.
So my monitor is unusable at this moment, and I don’t want to fry another logic board!
    Any help would be appreciated.

The third connector - the firewire - is different (when did THAT happen?), and so is not plugged in.
You probably have a FireWire 800 on your MacBook and a FireWire 400 on the display. The conversion can be effected with a converter cable, but for permanent installation ONLY I recommend this adapter:
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fw_adapter.html
Sometimes can be found for as little as US$10.
The reason I say this is for permanent installation ONLY is that this adapter appears to grow legs and walk away if not installed permanently. For occasional use, buy a cable adapter.

  • Using old 20" Cinema Display on new Macbook Pro

    Hi all
I have a new Macbook Pro runing OS X 10.7. I want to connect it to my old 20" Cinema display (aluminium one that I bought with a G5 around 7 years ago). I've got got the Mini Display Port to DVI adaptor, but this doesn't seem to work - it won't detect the display. Any clues?
    Thanks in advance

Does your Displays system preference show an Arrangement tab? If not there there is something wrong with the connections or the display itself.  Nothing further can be done on your computer if the Displays preferences don't detect the presence of the display and that would be indicated by having the Arrangement tab showing both screens.
Check yiour connections, especially the mini-displayport connection.  Make sure it is firmly pushed in.  They can look like they are fully inserted but actually aren't.

  • HT2844 When I plug my LED cinema display into my macbook Pro, the video switches automatically but the audio still plays via the macbook speakers by default. Is there any way to make the audio default to the display audio when plugged in?

    Hi,
Pretty much as the tital says really. I'm fed up of having to manually select my audio output every time I plug my macbook pro into me LED display. Can I make it default the audio to the display when plugged in?

yeah- I think so, AlexGrady.  see if your machine supports hdmi audio out, it should say under "about this mac"
then  buy the correct adapter to your LED display.  I think you also have to enable audio out via HDMI, and the adapter has to support HDMI audio passthrough
sorry, that's all I have for now

oh, and this forum is for Mac Pro's (just sayin')

Is there are a way to use my imac as a display for my macbook pro? I have a thunderbolt cable but it doesnt seem to do anything

    Hello eassic,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like Target Display Mode may be what you are looking for:
Target Display Mode lets you use a Mac as the external display for another “primary” Mac. In some cases, you can also play the sound from your primary Mac on the speakers of the external Mac. For example, a MacBook Pro could use a 27-inch iMac as the display and play its audio on the iMac as well.
OS X Mountain Lion: Use another Mac as a display
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
Use an iMac with Thunderbolt as a display
If you have an iMac with Thunderbolt, any other Mac with Thunderbolt can use it as a display. The iMac will play both the video and audio from the other Mac.
    1. Connect the Thunderbolt cable to the Thunderbolt ports on each computer.
    2. Make sure both Mac computers are turned on and awake.
    3. Press Command (⌘)-F2 on the keyboard of the external display Mac.
    4. If you want the external display Mac to play audio as well as video from the primary Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Sound, and then click Output. Select the external display Mac from the list of devices.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • How do i use my imac 21.5" 2011 as a display for my macbook pro late 2011, through thunderbolt cable ? I have tried and it doesnt seem to work, neither does target disk mode.

How do i use my imac 21.5" 2011 as a display for my macbook pro late 2011, through thunderbolt cable ? I have tried and it doesnt seem to work, neither does target disk mode.
Could it be a borked cable ? I just bought it new from the store today, i have updated both imac and macbook pro to latest thunderbolt firmware and updates. Both 10.7.3.

You are correct, here is what Apple Says:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3775
I was able to find these instructions, however they referr to 2009-2011 27" iMacs. I think it's the same, if it's not then contact Apple directly for instructions. If either of the machines is less than 90 days old or covered by AppleCare then call AppleCare tomorrow for help, they should be able to easily answer this for you. You will find the number in your manual or you can use the AppleCare Contact Info link.
Your iMac should automatically recognize the presence of a digital video signal at the Mini DisplayPort and enter Target Display Mode.
If your iMac does not automatically enter Target Display Mode, press command + F2 to manually enter Target Display Mode.

  • Extending my desktop across 2 (DVI) displays from 15" MacBook Pro Retina

Hi. I bought a new 15" MacBook Pro Retina a few days ago and am trying to connect 2 Dell displays with a view to extending my desktop across them both. At the Apple shop I was told I simply needed to buy 2 Thunderbolt to DVI converters (my 2 displays both have DVI out) and hook them up... Not true. If I try this my desktop only extended across 1 display. The other display isn't even picked up by my MacBook Pro.
So does anyone out there know how I connect 2 DVI displays to my MacBook Pro without buying a Matrox Dual Link? If I bought an HDMI to DVI converter cable and connected one display via the HDMI port, and the other display via the thunderbolt port, would this work?

May not be an upgrade issue ..
You have a fast processor. and 8GB of RAM is more than sufficient.  (The processor cannot be replaced)
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. Less can slow the system down.
If your Mac seems to running slower, try the suggestions here > Mac troubleshooting: What to do when your computer is too slow | Macworld
If you have not done so, especially with school files stored on the hard drive, make sure to back up your important data on a timely basis.  Help here >  Mac Basics: Time Machine
Not a good idea to post the serial number of your Mac on the net. I have asked the moderators to edit that information for you. It has nothing to do with upgrading.

  • Can I hook use an  older iMac as an display for my Macbook Pro?

Can I use an older iMac as an display for my Macbook Pro?  The Macbook Pro has the Mini display port and the iMac has the older (larger) display port.  I am trying to have a document open on the iMac while writing a paper on the Macbook Pro.
    Thank you for your time.

You can use the Mid 2011 iMac as a display for your 2011 MacBook Pro. Both have Thunderbolt, so you won't have any problem > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Buy a Thunderbolt cable and press Command and F2 keys on the iMac to enable Target Display

  • How to use the cinema display while your Macbook is closed

How do I use the cinema display while my Macbook is closed? Whenever I close the laptop the display shuts off as well. I really don't need them both to be on. That defeats the purpose of the external display. when I am home I want to use the laptop like it is the desktop computer.

I am using a MB Pro and a 23" cinema display. Have a wired USB keyboard and a USB wireless mouse connected through the keyboard. When the MBP is closed and when I restart it, the wireless mouse is frozen and the keyboard does not respond. I have to reopen the MBP, use the trackpad mouse, restart again and hope it will work closed. There doesn't seem to be a consistent way to make it work.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • 27" iMac (refurb, June 2011) not working as an external display for my MacBook Pro.

I just got a 27" iMac (refurb, June 2011) and it's not working as an external display for my MacBook Pro (not Thunderbolt).  Any idea why?  Command+F2 does nothing.  I am connecting via Belkin Minidisplay Port-to-Minidisplay Port adapter.
    Any help is appreciated...thanks!

Currently the ThunderBolt iMacs can only be used as an external display by other ThunderBolt Macs.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Thunderbolt/10.6/en/30822.html
Apple is very clear about that.
2009 and 2010 27" iMac with a Mini DisplayPort can be used by other Macs with a MDP-to-MDP cable.

I want to watch a rented movie from iTunes to a television (via an HDMI cable) but it comes this error message:
This film can not be played because a display is connected, which is not authorized for reproduction-protected movies.
I have now written to the TV company, she said that I should disable the screen of my MacBook and try again.
Make sure that the displays are NOT Mirrored.
    It may be complaining about your HDMI adapter;
Note: If you are trying to view HD video on an external display, the display must have a digital connection (DVI, DisplayPort, or HDMI) and also support HDCP.
