Cinema Display 23" Power Light Out

The monitor works but the power light no longer stays on.
Is this bad?
When I first boot up the light comes on, but after the grey screen the light goes out.
The monitor seems to be fine but this is a strange new ocurrance.
Going to apple store tomorrow to ask a few questions.
Anyone else have this happen?

"That's a little like GO on red and STOP on green, isn't it?"
I think the "logic" goes something like this:
When the display is on, it's obvious that it is on right? You can see the image on the screen right? So you do not need a glowing LED to tell you that it is on. But when it is sleeping, the screen is black. There is no way to tell if the screen is asleep or off because in both instances, it's black. So the LED lights when the display is sleeping so you will know that it is still "on". When you actually turn the display off, the screen is black and the LED is off.
Please do not ask me who is responsible for this "very logical" approach. It just goes to show that even logic can be subjective.

Hi, who can tell me where i can get replacement for my cinema display 65W power adapter?

If the display uses the Apple Display Connector (ADC)

you will need a DVI to ADC adapter.

They are also available on eBay.

  • If plugged into the power supply, should the Cinema Display A1081 standby light come on without being plugged into a mac

I was given an old Cinema Display A1081 a few years ago. I am trying to test it and want to know if plugged into the power supply, should the standby light come on without being plugged into a mac?  I don't want to buy a DVI to mini display adapter if it isn't working.  One thing I did do was plug Monitor power in and then the USB plulg into my PC laptop and my iPhone charger USB plug into the back of the monitor.  I am able to charge my iPhone this way so I know that the power supply is working. But I can't tell if the monitor itself is workign as no ligths are on. (PS:  I am purchasing my first Mac so I am a complete newb but very proficient with PCs) Thanks so much for your help.

Just a final question about Sleep mode - does this have any negative effects on the life or performance of the laptop? I'm so used to Shutting down the laptop each day that I worry about Sleep mode having some sort of drain on the components or something.
There are only two practical differences between Sleep and Shut Down:
    1. Sleep will wake instantly, so you don't have to wait for startup.
    2. Sleep will drain a new, fully charged battery after several days without being woken or plugged in. If you shut down, the battery charge lasts much longer. Obviously, if you only sleep it overnight, you'll still have plenty of battery left in the morning.
Don't sleep it more frequently than necessary, though. Frequently turning the backlight and hard drive off and on can shorten their life. Just do what's reasonable. I usually leave mine awake until I have to transport it in a bag, along with sleeping it overnight. On battery, I'll sleep it more often to preserve battery.

  • Cinema display 30" power plug caught on fire

    Hi everyone,
I have a 30" Apple Cinema display (A1083) purchased in 2008. Recently, it's power cable/wire came slightly unplugged from the 150w power supply while the monitor was on. The wire was still plugged in, but it was at a fairly severe angle. Spontaneously, sparks flew between the power supply and power cable/wire and fire shot out of the power supply melting the plastic around the cable. Needless to say but the monitor went dead at that moment.
I had another power supply laying around so I plugged that in to see if the power cable/wire would still work. The monitor came on for a while but then more sparks and the monitor went dead.
Apple no longer makes this monitor and apple care is expired (of course). Therefore, I figured I would fix this myself. By some miracle I found the entire set of cables on eBay and purchased them.
    My question is:
Should I replace the entire set of cables, which would involve opening up the monitor? Or, should I just replace the power cable/wire at the end which would involve some soldering, etc.
Also, are there any tips, directions, pointers that anyone has for doing any of this? I found one guy online who opened up the case but that is a risky move.http://www.eliteweblabs.com/recent/cinema-display-cable-fix/
I'm upset my beautiful monitor isn't working and really need some help getting it back, if possible. What do you guys think?

  • Self repair apple cinema display 65W power adaptor?

After a power outage, I have discovered that the 65W power adaptor (A1096 661-3760) driving a 20" apple cinema display is no longer working.  A different brick from another display works fine.  I was wondering whether I might be able to service this power adaptor myself?  Are there online guides for dissembling the adaptor and checking if maybe a fuse has blown?
    Thanks for any advice...
    Paul

My guess is not even apple bothers to repair something like a power adapter.  A google search shows it can be replaced (albeit not cheaply).  It's probably dangerous to fiddle with too since you have line voltages to deal with.
You could call a place like Mac-Pro to see what their opinion of repairing it is.  They sell that adapter but also repair mac stuff.

  • Apple cinema display 23" power problem.

Hey everyone I have a apple 23" cinema display 2006 or 1007 I'm not sure, that doesn't want to power up.
Heres the deal.. Apple says that in order to use the 23" cinema display you have to have a 90W or 150W power brick, I have the 90W power brick. I plug in the all the wires (power, usb, DVI, firewire) and then the monitor blinks: short, long, short, which according to apple means that the display isn't getting enough power. I did confirm that the power brick works I tried it on my other 20" cinema display and it works prefect.
    Anyone know whats going on?
    Thanks!

    Is that digital or analog?
Seems 1440x900 may not be a supported resolution.
Here are some examples of the resolutions that the Geforce supports:

  • Do Cinema Displays vary in lightness?

I’m testing a Cinema HD 23" Display here, which I would like to purchase. Hooked it up to my old G4 with Radeon 9000 graphics card. Works fine. What I noticed is that it’s incredibly light, much lighter than other Cinema HD Displays I worked with elsewhere. With the default Cinema HD profile it looked very light, even with lightness dimmed all the way down. After calibrating it got better, but I still have the lightness dimmed down more than half. Is that a common thing? Is it the graphics card, the OS (10.3.9)? Am I paranoid?

    Hm.
Yesterday I looked at a 23" at a local Apple reseller. Brightness was turned all the way up and it ran the default Cinema HD profile (OS 10.5). Looked much darker.
Could the default ColorSync profiles vary from OS 10.3 to OS 10.5?

The employees at the Apple store are completely unhelpful.

do you know if this machine is equipped with and AGP graphics buss or PCI-express? if the machine is form 2005 or later, it is likely PCI-e... before, then AGP.
this is what i found on on-line stores right now... looks like AGP options are becoming more rare.

  • Translucent 23in cinema display's power button is blinking

Anyone know why? Only thing I could find was incorrect display setting but I have been running 1680x1050 since I bought the thing 3 yrs ago and have an ATI RADEON 9600 with 256mb of memory.
I should not be having this problem, correct?
    Ant help would be appreciated!
    Thanks and Happy 4th!

No, you should not be having this problem, in fact, neither should I.
It appears as though the cause is a malfunction in the displays *Backlight Inverter*. Also, (well in my situation anyway), I have noticed that the very bottom of the screen is slightly darker than the rest of the viewing area.
Short of returning the display to Apple (or an authorized Dealer etc) for repair (my warranty has expired a long while back), there is an alternative, especially for those living in the US.
If you take a look at http://www.lcdparts.net/DesktopInverter.aspx you will see the parts needed at the bottom of the page along with the price and respective model number. In my case this page http://www.lcdparts.net/DesktopInverterDetail.aspx?InverterOriginal=T65I014.00MS S sums up my problem precisely, when you read the Description under the graphic of the actual replacement part offered.
The price of $US129.99 seems OK, but with conversion rates/shipping etc, I think I will be better off getting a new screen, as finding this part in Australia is rather difficult, to say the least.
You should also be aware that this is just for the part and you are expected to be able to replace it yourself, or they will do it for a fee.
Go here http://rapidshare.com/files/127505987/A1038backlight_inverterinstallation.pdf for the pdf on how to do it yourself, or join the Members section of their site and get it from there. I hope this helps anyone else in the same situation...

  • Re: 30-inch Cinema Display on Power Mac G5

I made the mistake of not realizing my G5 (duo, 2.5GHz) doesn't have a pci-e
slot....am replacing an AVI Radeon 9800 agp card....to get the better resolution. Ordered the AVI 1900xt which requires the pci express slot.
Ok, so now have it narrowed down to:
Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition RoHS 256 MB AGP
    Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition
Radeon 9600 Pro PC & Mac Edition
All 3 give resolution 2560 X 1600 resolution (not as good as the pci express card)
Anyone know the difference between these cards? Can't see it on ATI's site.
Am doing photo/video editing. Also want to use Final Cut Pro, so which is also best for that (support 2 moniters)

Ok, so now have it narrowed down to:
Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition RoHS 256 MB AGP
    Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition
Radeon 9600 Pro PC & Mac Edition

No, they don't (at least, not on the DVI port).
Anyone know the difference between these cards?
Can't see it on ATI's site.
On difference is the number of 30" displays they will run at full resolution.
The 9600 and X800 will run one, the 9800 will run zero. The 30" display needs dual-link DVI to run at full resolution. The 9800 only has single-link. The 9600 has one dual-link, and one single link DVI. The X800 has one dual link DVD and one ADC port (which can be used as single-link DVI with an adapter).
Another difference is speed. The X800 is a lot faster than the 9600.
Another difference is noise. The 9600 has no fan. The X800 has a small, fast, noisy fan. But don't worry. That fan will soon quit, so you can replace it with a quieter cooling kit.
You may be able to find some other dual-link cards. The AGP cards Apple sold that have dual-link DVI ports are:
ATI Radeon 9650 XT (one single-link, one dual-link DVI)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL (two dual-link DVI)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL (two dual-link DVI)
Apple doesn't sell these as retail items, but might sell them as replacement parts, or you could look for them used. Be sure to get Mac versions.

  • Mac Mini 2012 and I want to use a new 27" Lighting Display and my old 27" Cinema Display as a second Monitor

    Evening all,
I have a Mac Mini that I have been using a 27" Cinema Display on for a couple years - works GREAT, love the Mini and that display. The Cinema Display has Power for a Laptop, USB connector and a Mini Display Port connection on it.
I am a Guitarist / Songwriter and I use Pro Tools a lot. So I thought I would invest in the new Lightning Display for my Mac Mini. I would get the extra ports for Firewire, and USB, as well as now I could "Daisy Chain" my old Cinema Display off the new Lightning Display.
WHAT A PAIN IN THE BUTT THIS HAS TURNED INTO !!!!  I have honestly spent more than 6 hours trying to find adapters or ways to make these monitors BOTH work at the same time with the Mac Mini ( you know, a Dual Monitor Setup . . .)
    HELP !!!
1 - If I could find a HDMI MALE to Mini Display Port FEMALE adapter, I would run it on the HDMI interface - apparently no such adapter exists.
2 - You apparently can NOT daisy chaine the Cinema Display off the Thunderbolt Port on the new Monitor ( silly that that does not work, but it does not )
I am really stuck here - how do I get these monitors to work as "Dual Monitors" on the Mac Mini ???
    Thanks !

The HDMI port won't work for a 27" monitor, it maxes out at 1920*1200...
Supports dual simultaneous displays -- 1920x1200 on an HDMI display or a DVI display using the included HDMI-to-DVI adapter and 2560x1600 on a Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort display or even a VGA display (with adapter). Thunderbolt is backwards-compatible with Mini DisplayPort-equipped displays as well as adapters that are compatible with Mini DisplayPort (DVI, VGA, dual-link DVI and HDMI).

  • Apple 27" cinema display has died I think, after 5 hours!!!

I finally took delivery of my new Mac pro and cinema display today and after 5 hours use the screen has gone blank, and I can't get any life from it! I can't believe this has failed after only 5 hours use! Is there any way I can confirm it is the screen and not the graphics card or Mac. Has any one else had this issue with this display. I well and truely gutted, got to wait for a new one to be sent.

Are you sure it's the monitor that went out? Or has your mac pro "shut down"? "Shut down" in this case can mean a full shut down -- power light out, no fans running, totally off. Or it may be (and I experienced this -- more about that in a moment) power light on, and maybe a single exhaust fan running?
Full power off, nothing running, could be the most serious. I have no ideas about that.
Power light on, a single exhaust fan running is probably a thermal cutoff. It may be your video card is overheating. I experienced this because about 5% of the time the fan motor in my video card would not start (bad bearing or bad lubrication?). Card would overheat, monitor went black when the machine thermal cutoff. But it would always take less than 5 minutes for the card to overheat. Not 5 hours. So I am not sure it's the same problem as you have.
If your machine is still fully on -- all fans running, then maybe it is just a bad monitor. Or as you say it could still be the video card. But I think only applecare would need to diagnose any of these problems.
Note, in my case applecare did not diagnose my problem, I did. And it was only by accident because one time I just happened to be looking at the video card just after booting and noticed the video cooling fan wasn't running.

  • PowerMacG4 won't start without old Cinema Display attached

    PowerMacG4 867dp (Mirror Door)
    NVidia GeForce4mx w/ADC+DVI
20" Cinema Display w/ power switch, on ADC port
Acer 23" G23HL, on DVI port
I replaced my failing ADC with a new display (with much-appreciated help from this board!) Works fine as dominant display (currently not mirrored) but I need Cinema Display attached and powered up to run system. The Power Switch on tower lights, but won't shut down system, or start it without ADC attached. (It won't control system at all, only Power Switch on ADC works) Nothing in Preferences seems to apply. Should I just duct-tape new Display over old ADC and move on???       THANKS!

Thanks for your response BD Aqua. I don't have those diagnostics and frankly still wouldn't have a clue if I did. I was hoping I had overlooked some simple Preferance-type step in the change-over, but beyond maybe changing the old battery next, I'll just put one screen in front of the other- fortunately I've got room.  Thanks again for your reply!
